The Museum is where things happen . .
November March 2012 2010 .
The Museum is where so many events that benefit our Hungarian-American community happen and the list of programs just continues to grow. In September we helped Cleveland’s Hungarian community welcome Dr. Pál Schmitt, Hungary’s president, on his whirlwind visit to our city. His itinerary included visits to the Mindszenty Plaza, the Hungarian Cultural Garden, St. Elizabeth Church and a gala luncheon. The Museum itself hosted a very special event, the swearing-in ceremony of new Hungarian citizens. They came from Buffalo, Chicago and other neighboring communities to claim their Hungarian citizenship under a new law promulgated by Hungary, and the Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Society was pleased to have our Museum as the site of this very emotional celebration. In October, John T. Sabol, author of the book Cleveland’sBuckeye Neighborhood, visited the Museum and gave a talk on how he went about researching the material, and shared the stories behind many of the photographs contained in the book. You can purchase this gem at the Museum Gift Shop. The Annual Vintner Dinner on October 15, 2011, was held at the Shaker Heights Country Club. We celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. George Kozmon, Board member and “LisztLook-Alike” emceed the evening
that saw Ms. Vera Holczer, pianist, perform pieces by Liszt and Chopin on a piano pulled into the center of the room, amid dimmed lights, echoing 19th century evenings in the salons of culture-loving patrons. Mr. László Bőjtös, Honorary Consul of The Republic of Hungary, was our Vintner Dinner Honoree. Our Guest of Honor was Dr. György Szapáry, Hungary’s ambassador to the United States. The evening was capped off by wonderful wines, laughter, pleasant company and dancing to music by Harmonia. SAVE THE DATE FOR THE 2012 VINTNER DINNER! SEE YOU ON SATURDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 13TH!!!!! President Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Society
Visitors from Thailand, Dominican Republic, Pueblo, Colorado and groups such as the Friendship Force have left wonderful messages, and we want to share with our supporters some of these messages below….. “We love this museum as my husband was Hungarian and the culture and art of Hungary here have helped me better appreciate Hungary…we plan to visit Budapest and Vág where our family is from. Thank you!” Cynthia Farkas “Precious mementos and artifacts of a culture that needs to be preserved. Well done!” Suzanne Hobby, Burbury, Australia “Thank you for your attention and time spent with us. My Mom and Grandma came to a family in Cleveland in 1906.” Joyce and Ron Lund
Igyekszünk továbbra is a magyar kultúra szolgálatában tevékenykedni. Sikeres programjaink, kiállitásaink, könyvtárunk és ajándék boltunk e célt segitik megközelitenünk. Kimagasló megtiszteltetés ért bennünket az elmúlt év végén Karácsony idején. Eddig mindent felülmúló mennyiségü egyéni anyagi támogatásban részesültünk két helyről. Az egyik támogatónk, The Sam J. Frankino Foundation, Lorraine Dodero által és Szeretvai György közbenjárásával; a másik ugyanolyan bőkezű támogatás a Dömötörffy Katinka-Goldman Sachs Charitable Fund ajándéka volt. Szivből jövő köszönettel adózom a Társulatunk nevében ezért a bőkezű adakozásárt.
“What a treasure! The exhibits, goods for sale and friendly, informative staff made our visit so memorable.” Jim and Georgina Pander, Illinois “We are both so glad we noticed your sign in the window! I will tell everyone about this treasure.” Tibor Eszéki and Kathryn Fabrizió Eszéki “Gratulálunk a Magyar múzeumhoz! Szívből gratulálok a gyönyörű Magyar múzeumhoz!” A Buffaloi CTP-s diákok nevében 2011.9.17
Dear Friends and Supporters! On behalf of the Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Society I am happy and honored to extend this greeting to our readers. First, I want to express my thanks and gratitude for your continued generous support. In the last few months we had the privilege of participating in some memorable events. Our Vintner Dinner theme remembered the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt’s birth, which we celebrated together with Hungary’s ambassador, György Szapáry, and Honorary Consul General, László Bőjtös. Prior to this, we were honored that the Museum was the selected venue where the new citizens of Hungary took their citizenship oath in the presence of dr. Pál Schmitt, Hungary’s president. We also took an active part in organizing the luncheon in honor of the president and in organizing a Liszt concert. In addition to these events and programs, we again had a successful, informative and educational lecture series and exhibits. Through these programs, our library and Gift Shop, we strive to maintain our core purpose of preserving our Hungarian heritage and to pass it on to future generations. 2
Horváth Család, Chicagóból 2011.9.17 “I enjoyed this museum! Thank you!” Hiroko Nakamura, San Diego, CA. Just before Christmas, some of our friends and supporters honored us with unprecedented amounts of generous donations. One substantial donation came from The Sam J. Frankino Foundation through the generosity of Lorraine Dodero and the recommendation of George Szeretvai. The second, equally substantial donation, was from Katinka Domotorffy and the Goldman Sachs Charitable Fund. On behalf of the CHHS, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for their generosity. We are asking all our friends and supporters to take part in the life of the Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Society, so that together we can continue to preserve our culture for future generations. We could not exist without you
A Magyar Állam Elnöke meglátogatta a clevelandi magyarságot. Vasárnap délelőtt megnézte a Magyar Kultúrkertet az East Blvd.-on, miután a Szent Erzsébet magyar katolikus templomban vett részt a szentmisén. Ezek után a belvárosban tiszteletére tartott díszebéden vett részt, ahol három kimagasló magyar személyiségnek tűzött föl kitüntetést a Magyar Állam nevében. November found the Heritage Society co-sponsoring a beautiful piano recital honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt. Along with the Hungarian attended our American Coalition, we welcomed Gergely Bogányi to Cleveland. On the evening of November 6 at the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Mixon Hall, this world class pianist gifted us with an awe-inspiring performance of some of the most virtuoso pieces written by Chopin and Liszt. We sat mesmerized as Bogányi approached the piano, swept his hands gently over the piano keys in touching demonstraton of his affection for this wonderful instrument, and then proceeded to take us with him to a world of such beautiful music, that many remembered this evening for weeks thereafter.
attended our Holiday program on December 12. The program’s theme of Famous Hungarians allowed us to introduce names such as József Dobos, Ernő Rubik, Ferenc Puskás and Krisztina Egerszegi, and many more, into the vocabulary of our young guests. They learned about these people, and played games that represented the accomplishments of these famous Hungarians. In addition to many hands-on activities, the childern were able to experience age-old Christmas traditions through the presence of some guest
performers: Hungarian Boy Scout Troop 14 performed a Nativity Play which we call Betlehemes, and Hungarian Girl Scout Troop 34 brought to life the custom of kántálás, or what we know here in America as caroling. Small hands and hearts took home many mementos of the day.
What could be more facsinating to the lay person than a presentation about a Hungarian mathematician, physicist and
As the snow blew over much of Northeast Ohio this past February 11th, we hosted Dr. Lilla Szabó, curator with the Hungarian National Gallery. In her Hungarian language talk, she presented her research on the lives and creative work of Hungarian artists after World War I in the newly formed Czechoslovakia. Suddenly finding themselves an ethnic minority, Hungarian artists living in the “Felvidék” found it increasingly difficult to exhibit their work. Their story is one of how challenging circumstances often lead artists to look for and find alternative means to share their creative output.
aerospace engineer? On November 12th, Dr. John Gyékényesi, a structures and materials engineer at NASA, presented a well researched talk on Theodore Von Kármán. The audience was able to gain some insight into the magnitude of this man’s accomplishments. Through visual images of his life and work, Dr. Gyékényesi explained the significance of von Kármán’s work in astronautics and aerodynamics. If you’re facsinated by space exploration, then you owe a debt of gratutide to this man who dared to think in terms of helicopters as far back as World War I when he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army. Children represent the future of a community, and we had a taste of the future when a wonderful group of young people
Since the last time our Review was delivered by the postal carrier to your home, many events enriched our collective Hungarian-American lives. We hope you will join us for future acitvities and programs at the Museum…..live it, don’t just
