Self Directed Learners
As you are aware, the teaching faculty at Sekolah Global Jaya consistently works towards students reaching their maximum academic potential whilst also developing the soft skills of our students so they are prepared for the challenges of the 21st Century. For many years now, our school has used a set of guiding statements which we call our Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) to encourage this development. The ESLRs are used by the teaching faculty to enhance learning in the classroom, from Kindergarten to Year 12. One of the Expected Schoolwide Learning Results is listed here. Self-directed learners who: § show independence in learning § actively enjoy learning and whose love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives § develop a natural curiosity and become active participants in the learning community § assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development § give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience § are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs. Fostering a lifelong love of learning among our students has always been one of our aims but we also encourage our teachers in this regard as well. Recently, it was very pleasing to see that our learning community has continued to expand. For many years now we have run parent workshops on a variety of topics including matters of curriculum, sex education, reading programmes etc. A group of parents was concerned that they needed more, specifically in the area of Information Technology. So the Computer Skills for Mums workshops were begun. I was pleasantly surprised to see our computer laboratory full of new learners who were eagerly listening to Pak Agus during their first computer skills lesson. I commend the parents who have taken the step to increase their knowledge base and I encourage other parents to take any opportunities to learn more when they are offered at our campus. If there are particular areas of training or development in which you feel the school can support you, then please speak with a PTA representative and the school will make every endeavour to facilitate your learning experience. In Mathematics, students learned about numbers, including hundreds. They demonstrated great enthusiasm when exploring this concept by playing a game with a friend. The first child rolled 3 dice; each die represented either the hundreds, tens or ones; then the other child had to show that number using multibase on the place value board. They were working together very well and took turns to roll the dice.
Year 1 explored different kinds of religious celebrations and how to respect each other through a performance during assembly.
Students were confidently being tourists and tour guides during role-play. They experienced how to ask for information about a certain place and explained how to get to that place using a map.
In English, Year 1C learned how to follow a procedure to make lemonade.

Since our first week back at school, Year 1 students have been learning about our 4th Unit of Inquiry under the theme: Where we are in Place and Time. The Central Idea for this unit is Exploring and recording our world helps us to understand our place in the local community and beyond. With the title Are we there yet? Weve been learning about maps; what a map is and how to read a map; landmarks, routes and also how to draw a map of our classroom from a birds-eye view. We are still looking forward to the many exciting things we are going to explore and learn during this unit.
Primary
Year During our previous Unit of Inquiry about Hygiene, we gained lots of new information that was very useful for our daily lives.
We demonstrated how to be good listeners when Pak Hendy (GA Staff) and Pak Amidin (ISS Company) explained how they help keep our school clean and hygienic.
Based on the class discussion about some important hygienic practices, we practised how to be effective communicators by conducting a survey in school about the hygienic practices of other people. Now we know that people have different ways to keep themselves clean and healthy.
After learning about hygienic practices, we shared our knowledge confidently with the other year level students during our Hygiene Consultation Room Operating Hours. We gave demonstrations and quizzes with hand made bookmarks as the prizes. In pairs, we made Hygiene Posters creatively to inform everyone in school how important it is to keep ourselves clean and healthy. We also made the Hygienic Dustbin by decorating buckets with some vocabulary about Hygiene.
Currently, we are exploring our new UOI about Media.
We have already been doing some interesting activities during this unit. For example, we shared our holiday our holiday stories through different kinds of media and asked our friends to try and guess what we wanted to say.
As one of our frontloading activities, we went to Bintaro Plaza on a fieldtrip. There we saw many different kinds of media and experienced how people use them to convey different messages. It was very exciting!

Under the unit title: Aye
Aye Captain!, our Year 3 students will be learning about explorers around the world.
Central Idea: *Humans are driven by various needs and curiosity to explore unfamiliar regions which has an effect on people. Lines of Inquiry * People have explored and travelled throughout history (Connection & Causation). * The cultural effects of exploration on people to this present day (Causation & Change)
During our front loading activities, students in Year 3 watched animated films on Marco Polo and Columbus. The Students were curious to find out when they had explored the world. Students were inquirers when they made, sorted and arranged information about explorers into their bookmark page (www.delicious.com/year3sgj). The students used the bookmark page enthusiastically to find the web pages showing the router Zheng He and Ibn Battuta took.
In English, students are listening to the exciting adventures of Magellans voyage around the world 500 years ago.

MAYDAY ! MAYDAY! PLANET PROBLEM!
.. that was our Unit Title for our Exhibition Unit of Inquiry, December 1011, 2008. The Central Idea was The Earth is not yours and it is not mine, its ours; we have the responsibility to preserve our finite and infinite resources.
Lines of inquiry : - The characteristics of finite and infinite resources. - The connections between humans and finite/infinite resources. - Our responsibilities for the use of finite and infinite resources. When these photos were taken, Year 6 students were very busy
. busy preparing their projects for the Exhibition. They had to complete two tasks, one individual project and one group project. This was a big job but exciting and challenging. During this Unit of Inquiry, students were able to use all the skills and knowledge that they had acquired during their time in Primary School and the IB Primary Years Programme. Students had to make their own assessment criteria sheets based on their own student questions. They also had to select the PYP attitudes, learner profiles, transdiciplinary skills and ESLR that they would use during the process leading up to and including, the Exhibition. The pictures show how students were involved in the Exhibition process.

We chose to concentrate on a local issue and then wrote the Central Idea. 2. Student Journals: students kept a journal reflecting the whole process of the Exhibition. They wrote about their individual and group topics and had to create questions for their assessment criteria sheet, hopefully leading to real action in the local environment. 3-4. Students collected information and data from various sources such as the Internet, interviews, newspapers, books, movies etc. Some students interviewed a person from WWF Indonesia. 5-6. Mentoring in progress: Ibu Primi and Almer together with Pak Dan and Valjein are having a mentoring session. Mentors were invited from across the whole school. We appreciated the support from Secondary teachers. 7. A busy classroom: each student is busy preparing their projects for the Exhibition. 8-9. Being an effective communicator: students were able to explain their own topic to visitors, such as parents and students from other schools. 10. Group performance: Arda and Dita present their findings to visitors. 11. Ronny is seen here putting ideas into action by creating an environmentally sustainable idea, biopore, in the school yard.

This term the Year 6 students began their Unit of Inquiry (UOI) entitled Youre Hired!. Obviously this was a fun connection to the TV Show The Apprentice where Donald Trump says Youre Fired. The UOI is all about work and education and how they are closely connected. Students spent a day in the work place where parents volunteered to supervise them in an office, a factory, a business etc. Students gained a great deal from knowing how hard it is in the real world (and how hard their parents work!).
6
Following this activity, students worked with Ibu Jessica and Ibu Pat to prepare a Business Plan to set up their own business. They used their entrepreneurial skills to think of all that is necessary to establish a business, including finding backers. The students planned the whole process, from thinking of a product or a service, right through to offering that product or service to the SGJ community and producing a balance sheet at the end of it all.

Culture Activities
Addressing the AOI Community & Service through involvement in the Chinese New Year Celebration, students of Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 took part in organizing, planning and performing in the Chinese New Year Celebration. This took place on Thursday, 29 January 2009 in the gymnasium. While doing all this, they had to focus on the concept of community, regarding themselves as individuals within communities. They also had to reflect on their attitudes and responsibilities and their involvement in their community through the event. Students discovered how communities are different, how they are similar and what makes a community. They examined the interdependence between communities and individuals and how each responds to the others needs. As part of their study of Mandarin, they undertook reflection upon different social patterns and ways of life, showing initiative. Students reflected on the possible roles they can assume as individuals within a community. Students identified their own strengths and weaknesses and began to understand that these affect ones ability to make a positive impact on their community. They explored types of involvement and their effects on communities at various levels. Showing willingness to respond to the needs of others and coming up with solutions, prompted Davin and Arwin (Year 10A) to make a presentation about customs and culture surrounding Chinese New Year in front of the entire school community. Year 7: Jovi, Nabila, Axel, Raihan Dzaky, Zaky, Patricia, Michelle (Decoration) Year 8: Rama, Bianca, Igor, Frisca, Andri, Abby, Emily, Erin, Ica, Dinda, Bernardo, Brina, Bebby, Fadhli, Nadira, Safira, Joey, Kalista, Nadhila, Stephanie, Nadif (Singing) Year 8: Vidi, Indi (MC) Year 9: Naya, Nadia, Chaca, Bela, Sheryl, Nadine (Dancing) Year 10: Adhe, Anissa, Erwin I, Arwin, Alyssa, Manda, Abi, Ega (Decoration) All in all, it was a very successful event, especially for those who took part. It opened an entirely new dimension to those students, namely the dimension of Community and Service as an Area of Interaction. Ibu Veve

etween 1st and 6th of December 2008, our year level went on an excursion to Kuningan, a city in West Java, on the outskirts of Cirebon. The purpose of our visit was (mainly) to witness for ourselves life outside of the hustle and bustle of the capital. The highlights of our trip, however, were not only meeting with royalty in the form of the current prince of Kuningan but also getting down and dirty in the paddy fields (attempting to ease the farmers daily duty of planting rice), creating lane posts for an entire street, providing a free health-care stand and capturing (with our bare hands) freshwater fish and selling them. It was also an opportunity to get acquainted with the local community. In Kuningan, they showed us a perfect example of a civil society where no matter what you believe in or what your faith is, you are still a part of the community and deserve as much respect as of any other person in the community. The tour guide, who happened to be our ex-Humanities teacher, the lovely Pak Adam, explained to us how he himself is a Catholic and how his uncle is a devout Muslim and how they exchange words of each others holy books as a sign of respect and unconditional love. It truly signifies how simple it actually is to live in harmony and yet some of us just seem to complicate it for ourselves back home. Living harmoniously, they are able to help each other to improve the standards of their town. If we were able to ignore the differences each and every one of us possess back in Jakarta, just imagine how much of an impact and difference that would make in our daily lives as city people. This being our final trip as a year level, I must say it was a great way to end our final days as free-spirited seniors. And if youre currently a tenth-grader, I highly recommend that you join the trip, it is totally worth it. Our thanks go to Pak Darwin (our friendly and competent leader and organizer), Pak Didi, Ibu Dewi, Ibu Sam, Pak Tri, Ibu Ari, Pak Edi and Pak Andrew for their support and guidance. Jamal (Year 11IPS)

Reruntuhan bekas Istana Surosowan yang diratakan d e n ga n t a n a h o l e h B e l a n d a memberikan pemahaman bahwa Kerajaan Banten adalah kerajaan yang
Tercerminlah multikutural di Banten yang berdasarkan etnis ataupun a ga m a . M e re ka d a pat h i d u p berdampingan dengan damai. Nisa (Year 11 IPS)

Aku penjelajah, ujar Coraline. Tentu saja, anak manis, sahut Miss Forcible sambil tersenyum. Nah, jangan sampai tersesat. (Coraline, Neil Gaiman. Bab 2/ hal.26)

MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE A delegation of six students from Sekolah Global Jaya and their teacher, Arthur Busch, attended the 4th annual Model United Nations conference, held at the Marriott Hotel in Doha, Qatar from January 28 to February 1, 2009. Sekolah Global Jaya was the first Indonesian school to be invited to attend this event. The students met 350 student delegates from 36 countries and explored issues such as international piracy and the crisis in Zimbabwe. Students researched the issues before attending the conference and utilized numerous skills, including formulating ideas, negotiating, networking and thinking on their feet. Students successfully comprehended sophistated concepts and ideas in English and used their proficient language skills in their work as UN delegates. Much of the work of presenting position papers and working on resolutions was done in committees such as the World Health Organization and the Security Council.
The conference was run by the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. It was officially opened by the U. S. Ambassador to Qatar. The final event of the conference was a luncheon attended by a number of diplomats, including H. E. Ambassador H. M. Rozy Munir of the Republic of Indonesia. Our students were able to engage in meaningful dialogue with students from all over the world in trying to seek solutions to global problems. As Irman said, I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to represent my country and make friends with students from other countries. Jonathan expressed the view that It was great to take on the role of a diplomat from another country and see issues from another perspective. Alyssa welcomed the chance to gain confidence in my public speaking. December, I can say that it was one of the most worthwhile things I have done since coming to Jakarta. Along with Ibu Sam (and because of Pak Phils untimely illness), I helped take on the role of co-MC for the evening. Two things struck me about the concert. One was the array of talent that was on display that evening. Pak Rays opening rendition and his wonderful delivery of Music of the Night towards the end, were both moving and exciting. The house spirit from the beginning to the end was intense and students should be proud of the enthusiasm they showed. The events ended with the presentation of trophies to captains from the winning houses for cheering competition and overall points. A BIG thank you to the PE Faculty for all their hard work. Thanks also to the Primary and Secondary teachers, Admin staff and Management, who all helped to make the two days successful and contributed enormously to the spirit.
