Brussels Lobby news
POST EUROPE 53
200 Days left before Horizon 2020 launch ants Week 2013 on H2020
ope has created new engines to boost economic growth and to create jobs. This has resulted in new Research Framework Programme Horizon2020. It will cover all research and innovation fung and will start on the first of January 2014. To be fully prepared, all the ins-and-outs will be preted during the third edition of Grants Week Groningen. Separate sessions are tailored for researrs(both junior and senior), support staff, directors of research and educational programmes, mbers of boards, deans. Click here for this year’s (preliminary!!) programme
On several occasions, Govert Buijs, EU Liaison Officer RUG and UMCG, encounters stakeholders on European Research and Innovation policy. In his new column Brussels’ Lobby News, Govert Buijs communicates the latest alerts on EC’s Research and Innovation policy from the Brussels’ corridors. This month: H2020 and IMI news.
Brussels’ Lobby News No final decision on the multiannual financial framework (MFF) yet Negotiations on the multiannual financial framework (MFF) in the EU are still ongoing. A final budget decision on Horizon 2020 has still not been made. However, it looks like the budget will be settled at somewhere around 70 billion euro’s. This is more than was available for FP7 its predecessor - but because the programme is built up of yearly increasing tranches, the first years of Horizon 2020 will see less available funding than the last year of FP7. For more information on H2020, please contact Govert Buijs
First Workprogrammes H2020 being drafted Behind the scenes, the first work programmes are already being written, and the first drafts will be expected by the end of June. Following this, the first calls can be expected towards the end of 2013. For more information on H2020, please contact Govert Buijs
Start of the H2020 Advisory Groups postponed Several of our top researchers have applied for a spot in the Horizon 2020 advisory groups, tasked with advising the EC on calls for project proposals. Due to the multitude of applications that the Commission received (tens of thousands for about 250 positions) the selection process has severely been delayed. The Commission now aims to contact applicants by the end of June. For more information on H2020, please contact Govert Buijs Note: if you submit to an Advisory Group, please inform Geert Jan Arends, Research & Valorisation,

Innovative Medicine Initiative Stakeholder Forum During the IMI Stakeholder Forum (May 13 th) some light was shed on the successor to IMI ﴾Innovative Medicines Initiative﴿. The EC plans to invest 1.5 billion euro’s in ‘IMI2’ ﴾working title﴿, which will be matched in kind by industry. Some salient points: in IMI2 virtually all of the money will be earmarked for knowledge institutes and SMEs, as opposed to IMI, where a lot of money went to big industry. The EC admitted that it went for the safe ideas too much in IMI. In IMI2, there will be more room for crazy ideas, or ‘disruptive innovation’, as the Commission calls it. Finally, interdisciplinary research is called for and will be eligible for funding. For example, socio-economic sciences should be involved more. For more information on IMI, please contact Govert Buijs

Value Creation RUG and AHOLD exchange Leadership expertise In August 2011, Ahold and the RUG Faculty of Economics and Business department of HRM&OB- started cooperating in research. In this specific project, leadership effectiveness and leadership development within Ahold are scientifically explored, under supervision of professor Janka Stoker and associate professor Frank Walter. PhD Student of the University of Groningen and Ahold Employee Bart Voorn, is dedicated to the project and reflects on the benefits and challenges of constructing such cooperation. Read his article on page 3 UEF: Gooische Groningers will become a Named Fund The Alumni Chapter Gooische Groningers has realized its purpose: funding the excellent research of Ellen Nollen, pictured, on the Biology of Ageing with 250,000 Euro. Now it’s time for a change. In due time the Alumni Chapter Gooische Groningers will become a Named Fund. Gooische Groningers continue to support Ellen Nollen’s research, but new innovative initiatives on the Biology of Ageing will be funded as well. Website Ubbo Emmius Fund
IBM on College Tour in Groningen This week, the board of the University of Groningen welcomed the International Business Machines Corporation, IBM, on a working visit in Groningen. The programme provided lectures and discussions on the RUG Target project and the LifeLines project. IBM has a tradition of research collaboration with academia in universities around the world. In 2012, ASTRON, Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, and IBM decided to collaborate to Explore Origins of the Universe in a 32.9 million Euro project, to be located in Dwingeloo, Drenthe. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/university/ More information on the IBM Tour: Annemieke Galema, Research & Valorisation,

Professor Erik Heeres (Chemical Technology, RUG) develops a process to obtain aromatic hydrocarbons from biomass, BioBTX, in a consortium with Groningen based companies KNN and Syncom. Aromatics are nowadays produced from mineral oil. Because the chemical sector is shifting towards natural gas as a feedstock new routes are needed. More and more chemicals are becoming biobased. Often these are complicated molecules especially for niche markets. Up till now the production of light aromatics from biomass has received little attention. Light aromatics are a combination of benzene, toluene and xylene, BTX for short. They are important base chemicals in the chemical industry. The production of BTX from biomass, such as organic waste streams from the agrofood sector, contributes to the realization of the biobased economy. The production of BTX from organic waste streams allows for the production of green chemicals with a high added value. This offers economic opportunities for the chemical as well as the agro-industry. The production of BioBTX reduces the consumption of mineral oil, the CO2 emission and the dependency upon oil imports. At the moment mineral oil based BTX is cheaper than the green BioBTX. In part this is due to the absence of government measures to stimulate biobased platform chemicals. The bio-energy sector is heavily subsidised thereby increasing the price of biomass as the starting material for BioBTX. On the other hand, the success of BioBTX could be boosted by the current shift of fossil feedstock in the chemical industry. More and more natural gas is used now. This does not contain the aromatics that are produced in the cracking process of mineral oil. Therefore the price of BTX is expected to increase, which in turn causes the break-even of BioBTX to be achieved earlier. http://www.petrochem.nl/aardgas-kan-bio-aromaten-in-zadel-helpen.118700.lynkx Comments? Milestone! On July 3, 2013 the first scientific symposium will be organized on the Lifelines project. The symposium provides the first scientific results from LifeLines and results and achievements of other nationnal and international biobank studies. LifeLines is one of the most valuable, multidimensional cohort studies and biobanks in the world. It is the largest population based study in The Netherlands, with 165.000 individuals which will be followed-up for 30 years. http://www.wenckebachinstituut.nl/winkel/allover.htm?http://wencke4.housing.rug.nl:80/cursuswinkel/public/cursus.aspx?CPID=5973&doelgroep=1~hoofd
