FO O T PRIN TS Onthe SA N D One night a man had a dream He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord Across the sky flashed scenes from his life For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him and the other to the Lord When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of foot prints He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest time in his life This really bothered him, and he questioned the Lord about it Lord, you said that one I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way But I have noticed that doing the most trouble sometimes in my life there is only one set of footprints I don’t understand why when I needed
you most would leave me” The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you During your times of tried and suffering when you see only one set of footprints in the sand, It was then that I carried you”
ABSTRACT English is a foreign language in Indonesia because it is not used in daily communication. This reality, sometimes, makes it difficult for English learners to improve their language mastery because they have negative attitude toward English learning. The purpose of this study is to find out the attitude of Non-English students toward English learning. This study will show the importance of attitude in learning English. Therefore, the result of the study will show how the attitude of Non – English department students toward English learning generally. The discussion is also supported with some facts due to the tendency of having positive or negative attitudes among the students in relation with their sexs and departments. The data were taken from seven Non-English Department students of Soegijapranata Catholic University. There were 80 respondents. To collect the data from the respondents, the writer used the questionnaires. In this study, the writer used a closed-ended questionnaire with four options arranged based on the Likert Scale method. The analysis method used in this study is the quantitative method using simple descriptive statistic analysis and ANOVA test by SPSS program. The result of the study showed that the attitude of Non – English department students toward English learning generally tends to be positive. It means that NonEnglish Department students have positive attitude in learning English. The result of the study is also proven that there is no attitude difference between male and female Non – English department toward English learning. It is also proven that there is no attitude difference among Non English of seven departments.
ABSTRAK Bahasa Inggris merupakan bahasa asing di Indonesia karena tidak dipergunakan dalam komunikasi sehari-hari. Kenyataan inilah yang kadang kala membuat seseorang mengalami kesulitan mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa karena memiliki sikap yang negatif terhadap pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat sikap para mahasiswa jurusan non bahasa Inggris dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini akan mengungkapkan sejauh mana sikap mahasiswa jurusan non - bahasa Inggris terhadap belajar bahasa Inggris secara umum. Penelitian ini juga didukung oleh beberapa fakta untuk menunjukkan kecenderungan untuk memiliki sikap positif atau negatif berdasarkan jenis kelamin dan jurusan. Data diambil dari para mahasiswa tujuh jurusan non bahasa Inggris dari Universitas Katolik Soegijapranata. Responden berjumlah 80 orang. Untuk mengumpulkan data dari para responden penulis menggunakan kuesioner. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan kuesioner tertutup dengan empat plilihan berdasarkan pada metode skala Likert. Metoda analisa yang digunakan adalah metoda kuantitatif dengan analisis statistik deskriptif sederhana dan tes ANOVA menggunakan program SPSS. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sikap dari para mahasiswa Non bahasa Inggris terhadap bahasa Inggris secara umum cendrung positif. Itu berarti bahwa mahasiswa jurusan non bahasa Inggris mempunyai sikap positif dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Hasil dari penelitian juga membuktikan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan sikap antara mahasiswa non bahasa Inggris baik laki – laki maupun perempuan dalam bahasa Inggris. Hasilnya juga membuktikan juga bahwa tidak ada perbedaan sikap diantara tujuh jurusan non – bahasa Inggris dalam bahasa Inggris.
