ABSTRACT
Thesis is one of the requirements that must be fullifilled by students at the end of their study. In the Faculty of Letter, the students are required to write their thesis in English. There are difficulties faced by students in the process of writing English thesis. Therefore, difference of perception appears among the students regarding thesis writing. Students have their own difficulties in writing English thesis. The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ perception towards problems in writing English thesis. The data was collected by the questionnaires distributed to 75 respondents of the English department students in universities in Semarang who were writing English thesis and analyzed by SPSS – 16.0. The questionnaires were adopted from Tajino and Lee’s (2008) written in their article entitled “Understanding Students’ Perceptions of Difficulty with Academic Writing for Teacher Development: A Case Study of the University of Tokyo Writing Program.”. The result of this study shows that there are six different sources of difficulties the respondents perceived in writing English thesis. Additionally, the six difficult parts dominate the process of writing English thesis. Therefore, it affects more in the process of finishing their thesis.

ABSTRAK Thesis merupakan persyaratan yang harus di selesaikan oleh para mahasiswa di akhir pendidikan mereka. Di fakultas sastra Inggris, para mahasiswa diwajibkan untuk menulis thesis mereka dalam bahasa Inggris. Ada kesulitan-kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh para mahasiswa dalam proses menulis thesis bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, perbedaan persepsi muncul diantara mahasiswa mengenai menulis thesis. Para mahasiswa mempunyai kesulitankesulitan mereka sendiri dalam proses menulis thesis bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari thesis ini adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa-mahasiswa terhadap masalah-masalah dalam menulis thesis bahasa Inggris. Data yang dikumpulkan dari kuisioner – kuisioner yang di sebarkan kepada 75 responden dari mahasiswa-mahasiswa bahasa Inggris di universitasuniversitas semarang yang sedang menulis thesis bahasa Inggris. Kuisioner – kuisioner yang di adopsi dari Tajino dan Lee (2008) yang ditulis di artikel mereka dengan judul “Understanding Students’ Perceptions of Difficulty with Academic Writing for Teacher Development: A Case Study of the University of Tokyo Writing Program.” Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada enam perbedaan sumber-sumber tentang kesulitankesulitan dalam menulis thesis bahasa Inggris yang responden-responden terima. Dan enam bagian-bagian kesulitan yang mendominasi dalam menulis thesis bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, itu akan mempengaruhi lebih dalam proses menyelesaikan thesis mereka.
