Syafei, M.Pd (2) Rusiana, S.Pd, M.Pd Key words: Engliah dictionary, types of dictionary Dictionary is an indispensable tool for learning a foreign language. Different types of dictionarieshelp language learners find the meanings of unknown words, guide them to form accurate sentences, and provide them with tips on word usage in the appropriate context and sometimes also help to pronounce the word and also correct spelling of a word. The objectives of this research are: 1) To find out the types of dictionaries usedby the fourt semester Students of English Education Department, 2) To know the purposes of using dictionaryby the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University and 3) To know the names of dictionaries used by the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University. The kind of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The writer uses the result of questionnaire as the data that taken from the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University. The result of this research showed that:1)35% of the students use online dictionary and 11% of the students use multilingual dictionary, 2) 70% of the students use the dictionary to find the meaning of words, 50% of the students use the dictionary to check the spelling of words, 58% of students use the dictionary to translate from Indonesian into English or English into Indonesian and 11% of the students use the dictionary to see some examples of certain words and to find out the meaning of prefixes and suffixes, 3) 90% of the students have Oxford English Dictionary and 68% of the students use Google Translate. The writer suggests the English students to use monolingual dictionaries more often in learning process and they should know and understand how to use dictionary well and effectively. For the readers, this research can be used as reference for another research which is related to dictionary.

Syafei, M.Pd (2) Rusiana, S.Pd, M.Pd Kata kunci: kamus bahasa inggris, jenis-jenis kamus Kamus adalah sebuah alat yang sangat diperlukan untuk belajar bahasa asing. Berbagai jenis kamus membantu pelajar bahasa menemukan makna dari kata yang tidak diketahui, membimbing mereka untuk membentuk kalimat yang tepat, and menyediakan mereka dengan petunjuk kata yang digunakan dalam konteks yang tepat dan kadang-kadang juga membantu untuk melafalkan kata dan juga membenarkan ejaan kata. Tujuan dari penelitian yaitu: 1) Untuk menemukan jenis kamus yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, 2) untuk mengetahui tujuan menggunakan kamus oleh mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Muria Kudus, dan 3) Untuk mengetahui nama-nama kamus yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Jenis dari penelitian ini yaitu penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis menggunakan hasil dari kuesioner sebagai data yang diambil dari mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muria Kudus yang sebagai sumber data. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: 1) 35% dari mahasiswa menggunakan kamus online dan 11% dari mahasiswa menggunakan kamus berbagai bahasa, 2) 70% dari mahasiswa menggunakan kamus untuk menemukan makna kata, 50% dari mahasiswa menggunakan kamus untuk mengecek ejaan kata, 58% dari mahasiswa menggunakan kamus untuk menterjemahkan dari Bahasa Indonesia ke Bahasa Inggris atau dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia dan 11% dari mahasiswa menggunakan kamus untuk melihat contoh penggunaan kata yang tepat dan untuk menentukan makna awalan dan akhiran, 3) 90% dari mahasiswa mempunyai kamus Inggris Oxfor dan 68% dari mahasiswa menggunakan Goggle Translate. Penulis menyarankan bagi mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa inggris untuk menggunakan kamus satu bahasa lebih sering dalam proses belajar dan mereka seharusnya tahu dan paham bagaimana menggunakan kamus yang baik dan efektif. Untuk pembaca, penelitian ini bisa digunakan sebagai referensi untuk penelitian lainnya yang terkait dengan kamus.
