Inhoud: 1. In memoriam Janny Vorstenbosch 2. Debat en jaarvergadering LNVF 3. Gendered Cultures 4. Seminar Series on Contemporary Cultural Theory 5. Why gender? Seminar 2009 6. Women and Politics in Asia 7. Feminist Philosophy Made Simple 8. Help Lover 9. Tentoonstelling „De Ideale Vrouw‟ 10. Volgende nieuwsbrief 1. Westers feminisme in mondiaal perspectief Plaats: Universiteit van Amsterdam, Oudemanhuispoort, Kloveniersburgwal 82, zaal A 008, Amsterdam

Sprekers: prof. dr. Sarah Bracke (K.U. Leuven), dr.

Gendered Cultures Gendered Cultures at the Crossroads of Imagination, Knowledge and Politics http://www.7thfeministconference.org/ The 7th European Feminist Research Conference "Gendered Cultures" focuses on Europe and European perspectives, combining the Humanities with (inter)disciplinary research from other scientific traditions. It actively seeks cutting-edge scholarship by working with papers organized around intersecting themes. Cutting-edge comes to mean "inclusive" rather than "new" research on gender, women, and feminism at the crossroads of different practices of imagination, knowledge and politics. Both young and established researchers are invited to present papers that accept this challenge for the future. European Women's Studies Associations are explicitly invited to have their annual meetings at the 7th European Feminist Research Conference. Contact the organization for more information at
[email protected]. The conference is a triennial event organized by the Gender Studies Programme (Utrecht University), AOIFE and ATHENA. Previous European Feminist Research Conferences were held at the universities of: Aalborg (1991), Graz (1994), Coimbra (1997), Bologna (2000), Lund (2003) and Lódz (2006). The 7th European Feminist Research Conference focuses on a wide but well-defined range of themes: A. Imagination: Art & Politics B. Feminism in Post-Secular Europe

Seminar Series on Contemporary Cultural Theory The Centre for the Humanities in co-operation with the Gender Graduate Programme and Media and Culture Studies hosts a second round of the seminar on Cultural Theory. The seminar is a close-reading seminar, which focuses on texts that are valuable to the humanities as a whole and is open to scholars, students and people working outside of academia. Theme two: Immanent Spaces, Immanent Times Our new theme searches for ways in which time and space are not given materialities, as in Newtonian physics, but are actualized and realized through events. From architectonics to science, from philosophy to theories on social complexity, we traverse all parts of academia in order to question these two Aristotelian concepts that have proven themselves so fundamental for thought. University of Jyväskylä 9th-10th of October 2009 The two-day international conference entitled "Why Gender?" aims to bring together both Finnish and international scholars from a number of different disciplines to participate in intellectual discussion regarding future directions gender theory could take. The conference is conceived as a starting point for future networking on this topic. The continued importance of gender as a social category in the late modern world prompts us to ask the oft-forgotten question: why? As researchers in the humanities whose studies are firmly grounded in empirical data, we are primarily concerned with how gender is theorized within our disciplines, as well as how gender researchers can both draw upon and contribute to theories in areas outside the humanities, for example social studies. The conference organizers would like to see more theoretical work on gender, this most elusive of social divisions, which combines the insights made within women's studies, men's studies, feminist studies, queer studies, and the anthropological study of gender. The organizer of the conference is the project “Strategic Practices: Hidden Histories of Gender in Finland 1880–2005”, funded by the Academy of Finland‟s research programme Power in Finland. We are a multidisciplinary team of seven researchers (ethnologists, historians and folklorists) from University of Jyväskylä and University of
4
Helsinki. The project director is Prof. Laura Stark from the Department of History and Ethnology, University of Jyväskylä. In our view, current theories of gender which assume women‟s universal inequality and male dominance in social life take as their point of departure that which actually needs to be investigated, including hierarchies and use of power within women‟s groups and within men‟s groups. Even after several decades of valuable work uncovering the socially-constructed nature of gender, we are still not questioning deeply enough our basic assumptions regarding the inevitability of gender. The conference will consist of lectures by keynote speakers and thematic sessions. The keynote speakers are: Dr Wendy Cealey Harrison, University of Greenwich, UK, author of e.g. “Beyond Sex and Gender” (2002) Prof. Jeff Hearn, Svenska handelshögskolan, author of e.g. “Men in the Public Eye. The Construction and Deconstruction of Public Men and Public Patriarchies” (1992) and “The Violences of Men. How Men Talk About and How Agencies Respond to Men's Violence to Women” (1998) Dr. Sally Hines, University of Leeds, UK, author of e.g. “TransForming Gender: Transgender Practices of Identity, Intimacy and Care” (2006) The accepted sessions will be announced in December 2008. The call for papers will be announced in January 2009. If you have any questions, please contact Pasi Saarimäki (

Women and Politics in Asia International Conference Women and Politics in Asia: A Springboard for Democracy? 30.9.-02.10.2009, University of Hildesheim, Germany Call for Papers The conference series “Women and Politics in Asia” started 2003 in Sweden, at Halmstad University, and was continued 2004 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and 2005 in Islamabad, Pakistan. In 2009, the fourth international conference of its kind will be convened by the Institute of Social Science at the University of Hildesheim, Germany. Building upon “Women and Politics in Asia 2005: Discovering the Gender Face of Politics”, Women and Politics in Asia: A Springboard for Democracy? aims to reflect upon the links between

democracy and the feminisation of the halls of political power
gender and (power) politics
gender relations and gender ideologies and their impact on specific socio-political systems, modes of interaction / participation and citizenship discourses
gendered forms of political participation and agency
within Greater Asia in an integrated comparative perspective. This region of the world is interesting for students of democracy for a number of reasons: Many Asian countries have acceded to different forms of democratic government in the past few years while other countries belong to the group of fragile states, struggling with instable or autocratic governments, heterogeneous gender and identity politics and/or with internally contested democratisation/liberalisation and state-building projects resulting in distinctive gendered outcomes. The vast majority boast extremely diverse populations, which generates enormous challenges for the establishment of balanced political representation and participation; many countries have adopted affirmative action measures to increase the representation of women and ethnic groups in their parliaments; many countries have elected women to the highest positions of executive and legislative power; finally, many countries are confronted with national and international initiatives for gender mainstreaming, women machineries and progressive gender policy regimes as part of a good governance concept of ODA donor countries or lobbying from (trans)national women‟s movements and non-governmental organizations throughout the region. This conference is soliciting papers for the following four themes (and parallel sessions):
Political Actors and Institutions
Public Policy
Political Theory and Citizenship Discourses
Feminist Movements

Feminist Philosophy Made Simple Proposals for papers or workshops are invited for a one-day SWIP UKconference, in association with the International Association of Women in Philosophy (IAPh), to be held in London on 13 February 2009 at a venue to be announced. Feminist Philosophy Made Simple Feminism claims women are oppressed, and aims to free them. Like any liberation movement, feminism is dogged by propaganda. But anti-feminist propaganda has been astonishingly effective. Despite endemic and persistent serious harms to women including abuse of girl-children, rape, domestic violence, economic, legal and political disadvantage, and despite centuries of work by feminists, most men and women today will say 'I'm not a feminist', or 'feminism goes too far'.
7
The aim of this conference is to affirm the unity and simplicity of feminism in the face of the propaganda. The unity is captured well in Simone de Beauvoir's phrase 'absolute feminism', which points to necessity as well as unity. The liberation of women is necessary, not something a just society can do without. At the conference we will explore how the apparent complexity and diversity of feminism may be no more than a superficial effect of oppression. Feminists face sceptical, even hostile, standards of evidence and argument. They are expected not only prove there are problems, and suggest solutions. They are also expected to prove feminist solutions are possible, will work - and are not just covert attacks on men. In epistemic conditions like this, it is no wonder feminists modify their claims, distance themselves from each other, and make distinctions so fine they tend to paranoia. Pace the propaganda, feminism is simple. It needs just a couple of concepts to hold it together. At its core, it needs the idea that there are women, who are being harmed and need help. But it seems the propaganda has found a way to undermine even this most fundamental feminist idea. The concept 'gender' used to be a feminist tool for exposing the wrongs of sex roles. But it can also become a patriarchal Trojan horse, smuggling into the heart of feminism tools for the dismantling of the core concept, 'woman'. Proposals are invited for philosophical ways to re-affirm women, without affirming oppressive sex roles. Please send abstracts of up to 400 words by 9th January 2008 by email to

9
