If so, we would like to invite you, or anyone you know who may be interested, to be a speaker at a TEDx event in Eindhoven, in the former Constant Rebecque barracks. That’s right, our school will be hosting a TEDx event, and we would like you to be part of it.

Speakers are given the rare opportunity to engage with a live audience and have their voices projected across the world. Now we extend this opportunity to you. Once either yourself or someone you know who is interested has given this a good amount of thought, please contact us at
[email protected] in order to explain the idea you wish to spread as well as your preferred contact method. On the basis of this we will come back to you and if the idea and passion behind it is sufficient, and invite you to a meeting to discuss it in further detail. Primary International Dear Parents, It is hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived and 11 months have passed so quickly! The end of the year always brings a tremendous sense of achievement, especially with so much accomplished: from the school camps and book week at the beginning of the year to the recent sponsored events, school trips and sports day.
A note from... Joan Roach, Head of Primary International
[email protected]
Our pupils have been involved in a remarkable number of activities many of which will be spotlighted in the school year book. Each family will receive a copy of the yearbook so you can share, relive and remember these activities. Our pupils have shown ability to both work together and to enjoy special events. You are able to see their characters developing in a way that both parents and teachers can be proud of. Of course, we should not forget the tremendous amount of learning, which has taken place during the year both in planned lessons and informal events. The Primary division staff have worked extremely hard to provide stimulating and inspiring lessons to promote active and independent learning. This year we have experienced enormous growth in the Primary division of the ISE. We end the year with 30 classes with four groups in our increasingly popular dual language Foundation group. For the first time in the International department we will start the school year with four group 2 classes and some classes will have waiting lists. I would like to thank various members of our school community who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to enable our pupils to have such an enjoyable and successful year: Thank You to the parents’ committee for all of the events that they have organised: the monthly coffee mornings, the Halloween party, the funfair being a few examples of the events that have been an outstanding success. Thank you to the class parents for supporting the class teachers and enlisting the help of volunteers for class trips and activities when required. Thank you to the lunch club for supervising our pupils at lunchtime in all weathers to ensure that the children have a safe and enjoyable lunch break. Thank you to the many volunteers who have given up their time to help in the library in a variety of ways. We have a number of committed parents who help to check books in and out during the children’s library sessions on a weekly basis. Organising the timetable for these volunteers is a big task so thanks to Vicky McKenzie for doing this. Thank You to those volunteers who also help with covering and cataloguing the books in the library for the library as well as for take home and guided readers. Finally I would like to thank the teachers, teaching assistants, support staff and the leadership team for all of their hard work in making the 2014/15 school year a success. The end of our school year brings the expected joy at finishing another year but there is also an element of sadness as we say goodbye to various members of our school community. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the children who will be leaving the ISE and their families all the best as they move on. I hope the children look back at their time at the ISE as both a time of learning and enjoyment and that they settle easily into their new environments. I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. It is always good and necessary to take time to rest and recharge our batteries in anticipation of a new school year. See you in August! Thank you, Joan Roach
Dank u, Daphne Dansen
Primary Parents’ Committee ‘Pyjama Day’ raises €374 towards the Logan Fund! Dear Parents, The end of the school year is passing by in a flurry of sports days, leaving lunches and end of year parties. Here is the last round-up of news from the PC to tie up a few loose ends before the holidays begin.
Pyjama Day!
Come to school in your pjs day on Friday 12th June was a lot of fun, with over 370 kids taking part. We raised €374 for the School’s Logan Fund, and this money will be used to help sponsor children at the school for extraordinary extra-curricular activities (for example, attendance at a sports championship). Any parent with children at the school is eligible to apply, and if you’d like more details, please see Kath in the School Office. The Logan Fund also sponsors the school’s end of year prizes, which will be awarded this week at special assemblies.
Ice Cream Prize won by 6 PK
We promised an Ice Cream prize to the class that sold the most Raffle Tickets for the Fun Fair and the lucky winners were Class 6 PK. Many thanks to all the parents of that class for their generous ticket-buying! A couple of weeks ago, the PC descended on the classroom bringing everything to make a super-duper bowl of ice cream sundaes and we can report that most of the children came back for a second helping!
Logan Fund Awards – on planning for next year…
The Logan fund awards will be given to 8 children on July 10th at a special assembly. The award is given for outstanding effort and attitude displayed in the school year.
Volunteers Thank you
The current parents committee hosted a thank you for all the volunteer parents who helped to make every event a success. It has been yet another wonderful year of making our children's lives happier by adding to the 'gezelligheid' in the school with our energy and efforts. We still have a few places to fill on the team next year as other members step down and we will be recruiting again in the new school year, so please consider giving up some of your time to be part of a great team dedicated to making our school a friendlier community. We’re always pleased to hear from you and if you have any questions or comments, please drop us an email:
[email protected], ask for us at the Office, or come and say ‘hi’ on the playground. With best wishes, The Parents’ Committee Aditi Chatterji, Patricia Dias, Cristina de Kok, Basak Gulsoy, Nicola Stoyiannos Hurley, Gabriela Molinari de Pina, Elia Molina, Sudha Vallabhaneni, Nicki Walters
Fun Fair proceeds
We’ve asked the teaching staff to nominate purchases from the money we made at this year’s Fun Fair. The idea is that the money goes towards providing ‘extras’ for the school and children that are not otherwise covered by the school budget. We have been able to help the Library purchase a set of sofas for the classes to sit on when they come for their library time. We also hope to help pay for a couple of activities for the children related to the arts and culture. Details to follow in the next school year. The money from last year's and previous year's fundraisers was used to pay the school for the new playground equipment for the front playground.
PC Farewells…Nicki Walters
At the end of this year we are saying a sad farewell to several members of the PC team. Nicki Walters is returning home to the USA after three full years on the PC. Nicki has been an anchor for the PC with her never ending energy, wisdom and warmth. She has been involved in every aspect of the Parents committee, a true leader and will be missed. Also leaving us this year are Nicola Stoyiannos - Hurley who is off to Greece. She has been a strong and ever smiling asset for the team. Zurine Alacreu also stepped down this year, she was a fundamental part of the art work and decorations committee and will be missed.
The Parents’ Committee is a volunteer group of school parents representing both the International and Dutch Departments. Our main job is to organise social events for the children and parents, and we also raise money for the school’s charitable Logan Fund. Additionally, we’re here to help if you have any questions about living in Eindhoven, or the school, and if we can’t answer them, we’ll do our best to put you in touch with someone who can. You can contact us on:

Waterpret/Water Play Primary school students cooled off with some afternoon water play!
Lost and Found Do You Know WHERE Found items are ? Lost and Found … piles of items under the stairs in the canteen which have been found around campus! Please ask your children to claim anything they are missing before the close of school on Tuesday 14 July. All items not claimed to be donated to charity. EVERYTHING!
Urgently Needed
For the new school year; Two volunteer parents who will be responsible for the “Lost and Found” items. We would like to have 2 parents who will be willing to come in each Friday afternoon (either together or on alternate weeks) from 15.00, to sort out the lost and found items. This means emptying out the lunch boxes and making sure that all the items found are folded and stored in the correct place. At the end of each term a letter will go out from school telling parents that if items are not collected, they will be disposed of. The parents will then bag up the unclaimed items ready for collection. If you would like more information, or are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Joan Roach, Head of International Dept.

Choir On July 2nd the choir recorded their first CD. A sound engineer came in for the afternoon and the choir made a CD with 10 of the songs they have been learning over the year. Tracks include 'The Lonely Goatherd', 'It's the Hardknock Life' , and 'The Best Day Ever'. After the recording the choir performed all the songs to their parents. The concert was very successful and the choir sang beautifully.
Ghana Sponsorloop
On June 1st we organised a sponsor event for the Humanity Foundation in Ghana . The groups 3 and 4 did an obstacle course and answered questions about Ghana. The groups 5 -8 played a game followed by a scavenger hunt. On June 4th we handed the amount of 4.329,29 euros to Mr. Osei, the founder of the school for underprivileged children in Ghana. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to make this event successful. Sincerely, Edith van Weezel and Karin Courbis
DFL Groups 1 & 2 In groups 1 and 2 we’ve been working on a new theme during our Dutch lessons: food! We’ve been discussing fruits, vegetables, meat, candy, drinks, etc. We’ve read different books about eating and also sang songs about food. To make the subject more lively we took a lot of different fruits and vegetables into the classroom. The children had the opportunity to see, smell, feel and taste!

Einde Valentine Guillorit groep 5TB

We spelen heel vaak voetbal.
ANGLIA Exam Results As stated in an earlier newsletter, the children in group 7 and some from group 8 Dutch Department have completed their Anglia examinations in April 2015. The exams were sent to Chichester, England to be marked and the results have just come in. All the children passed the tests with flying colours!! They all have passed the tests with either a merit or distinction. To receive a merit they had to have more than 65% of the test correct and for a distinction more than 79%. A great result!! The certificates will come in later and will be presented at the end of the school year. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE CHILDREN WHO TOOK PART. The results can be seen on the Anglia site: www.anglianetwork.eu Then go to exams, results, April 2015, page 167 for the ISE results. Mrs. T. letter from the head of ise secondary... Dear Parents Once again the end of another school year is upon us. Looking back on this school year, my first thought is that it has run a lot smoother than the previous year. I believe this year we have settled into our new surroundings. Things are of course not perfect, they probably will never be, but we have come far in developing a good working relationship with the consortium. Much effort has been put into working together and understanding each other’s needs. I would like to thank all the members of the consortium staff for their support throughout this school year and for their efforts to move towards being one team.
ISE Secondary
This year, as always has seen many, many different events, activities and trips that have taken place to expose our students to different experiences. As I type, many of our students are scattered across the country on various camps. As well as all the many excursions we have offered our students have had the chance to join MUN, Maths Completions across Europe, ski trips, trips to Spain, student conferences and our sport teams have competed in many matches as far afield as Geneva and Nice. Next school year we are already planning lots more activities. To kick off the school year we will be holding a family picnic on Sunday, 6 September. This event will be open for all our families from primary and secondary. There will be lots of things going on to keep people of all ages entertained, so please put the date in your diary. The secondary school has also made the brave decision to take on the challenge of holding a Tedx event in February. This is no small feat and you can read about how you may be able to support us on Campus page (pg2) of this newsletter. A mention has to be given here to Xavier Weiss, a current DP1 student, who is the brain behind getting this event off the ground. Unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to several members of our staff. As you are aware, Mr and Ms Gatley will be retiring to the Welsh countryside. Mr Nogues after many years of service at the ISE will be returning to Spain. It is always difficult to say goodbye to colleagues who you have worked with for so many years. I have had great pleasure in working with each of these three teachers and I know I am not the only one who will miss them greatly. Although, Ms Overbeek, Ms Cooijmans, Ms Vermeulen, and Ms Dieberts have been at the ISE for a relatively short time, each of them have made their mark on the school. I would like to thank each of them for their input to the development of the school and wish them all the best on their next endeavour.
I cannot end this month’s column without of course mentioning our IB Diploma results. This year’s exam results were above all expectations. You can see an overview of these amazing results on the last page. Of course all our students deserve a huge pat on the back for a job extremely well done, but I would also like to say how proud I am of our Diploma teachers. Without their blood, sweat and tears perhaps the results would not have been quite as good as they are! Finally, I would like to end by thanking each of you for playing your part in making our school better. For those of you leaving the ISE, I wish you all a fond farewell and all the best for the future. Wherever this summer holiday may take you, I wish each of you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer. From The English Dept. Our younger secondary school students have just completed various end-of-year activities, all of which involved working collaboratively in groups. The MP1 students have been reading a play about homeless people, and they created a radio programme in which the problems of poverty and homelessness were discussed. The task involved role play, and the expression of different points of view, including controversial ones. In their groups, the students wrote their own scripts, and learned about effective oral presentation. In MP2 English Language and Literature, the students have been learning about newspapers: layout, the grammar of headlines, and the conventions of news journalism. Their final activity of creating the front page of their own newspaper was very successful. MP3 students have been learning about the power of persuasion, using language and images, and the importance of being able to present themselves and their products in a convincing way. Their task was to create an advertising campaign for a real product, called brainGymmer, which has been developed by a company called DezzelMedia. The director of Dezzel-Media, Louis Kinsbergen, came to school to judge which group had the best campaign, and the winners were Shaad Ahmad, Ecem Ozdemir, Sanjana Setty and Mark
Roche-Gil: congratulations to them. We are very grateful to Louis Kinsbergen for taking time out of his busy schedule to help us with this project. He gave us some very helpful feedback, and was very complimentary about our students’ performances. Thanks are also due to Greta Timmers, who organized everything. I am often asked by parents, at this time of year, how they can help their students with English language skills, and the answer to this question is always the same: do, please, encourage your students to read over the summer holidays. For many students no encouragement is needed. By and large, our students love to read. However, for those students who have yet to discover the joy of reading, or who still are on the brink, please access the library website, www.isesecondarylibrary.com, for suggestions. This year the library is able to loan books out for the summer. Below is a list of recommendations from MP1b, each of whom gave a talk on a book they had read and enjoyed recently. On behalf of the English department, I would like to wish everyone a very happy summer! Joy Bowker Subject Leader for English (ISE secondary section), July 2015

MP5 Personal Project: short story about an exchange student, ‘RISING LOTUS’ by Olivia Roach
Chapter Two The day after Jessie’s last day of school meant it was finally summer holiday. But it meant something more to her as well. After living on this earth for eighteen years, she was then finally nineteen. Yes, the day after school ended was Jessie’s birthday. Usually her birthday wasn’t that important to Jessie and she never really celebrated. There wasn’t much time to either – there always happened to be something she should be doing. She could be getting started on her holiday assignments, visiting her family or finding a summer job. Since Jessie was going on an exchange this year, she had a couple of free days to herself which wasn’t usual. And this time Jessie decided to actually celebrate. She let herself sleep in for a little bit longer than usual. When she woke up, Li was already getting dressed in the dormitory. “Good morning!” Li said, a grin spread across her face. Her eyes twinkled as she beamed at her friend. “Happy birthday!” “Thanks, Li,” Jessie mumbled, still a little bit sleepy. “I hope you didn’t plan anything like last year.” The year previous to this one, Li had managed to organize a professional singer to come to the university and serenade the birthday girl in the cafeteria. Jessie had been surprised out of her mind and also as red as a tomato from embarrassment. She couldn’t imagine having to go through something similar again. “Of course not,” Li smiled, which made Jessie doubt she was telling the truth. Regardless, there was nothing Jessie could do if Li had planned something, so she swung down from her bed and started to get ready as well. The fan blew the hot air around the room and offered little relief to the two students. Jessie could feel herself sweating as she started on the long journey down the stairs. On the way to the cafeteria she checked her phone, and there on WeChat were the customary birthday messages from a few friends she wasn’t too close to. Jessie thanked them all individually before putting her phone away. Jessie entered the cafeteria and let her eyes survey the scene quickly. Now that she was on time, there were a lot of students crowding the small area. Two workers handed out trays to those who passed the entrance and then the student could join the long queue. Heaps of food were spread along a few tables for students to select their food from. There were vegetables, fried potatoes, bao zi, soy bean milk, milk with extra calcium, bread, and bean paste bread as well. Jessie generously helped herself
to what she wanted, grabbed some chopsticks and headed over to a table in the far back. It only took a while for Li to join her, and then someone else did too. A worker came over with both hands behind her back, as if she was angry and ready to tell Jessie off about something. “Oh great,” she whispered to Li as the worker came closer. “I wonder what I’ve done wrong this time…” “Who knows?” Li said, her face as unreadable as a mask. Jessie shot her a questioning look and then kept her eyes focused on the woman approaching. But when she reached the table, instead of a telling off she pulled a cake out from behind her back and laughed. “Happy birthday!” she grinned. In mere seconds the majority of the cafeteria’s guests were crowded around her table, all trying to get a look at the astounding cake as they sung to her, Li leading them all. Before she knew it she blew out the candles and started cutting the cake, giving pieces to students she didn’t know and had probably only come here for the cake. Jessie didn’t mind too much. Even though her ears were glowing pink and she was sure she looked horrible, it was already more than most people had ever done for anyone’s birthday. It really wasn’t usual to celebrate birthdays in China. “Thank you, Li,” Jessie whispered once they had escaped the crowded scene of the cafeteria. She hugged her friend. “Today has truly been the best day ever.” “Only deserved,” Li said graciously. She checked her watch. “I better catch the bus home though; my parents are anxious to see me. I will be round to pick you up from the airport in the morning with time to spare, okay?” “Okay!” Jessie said as she waved her friend away. Still smiling, Jessie started her walk off campus and towards the small town place that was a few blocks away. She wanted to treat herself to a new book as a gift. As Jessie walked along the familiar streets, she couldn’t help but look closer at the people who made up the country she called home. There were the toddlers who wandered around in split pants, denim with neatly cut holes in them that bared their unmentionable to the world. It was conveniently made to make it easier to take the children to the bathroom to re-
lieve themselves. Some of them wore the squeaky shoes that made noise with every step the child took. Those shoes drove Jessie insane and she hurried past those families. But there were also the men who rolled their shirts up under their armpits to help relieve them from the sun. Once, Jessie had tried to ask her mother why they simply didn’t take their shirt off, rather than roll up the sleeves. “Taking off your shirt in public is inappropriate, Jessie,” her mother had answered. But she couldn’t really see a difference. The men already exposed their entire chest, so there wouldn’t be much else to see. However, there were many things Jessie didn’t understand in life and she had learnt to let them be and accept them. She never questioned why they couldn’t use facebook, why so many movies were banned or why it was so hard for people to enter China. She could remember the exact words her professor told them when brave students asked about them. “Some things are just the way they are. Don’t ask questions and let them be.” But that was always Jessie’s problem. She could never simply let things go. She always wanted to know how and why, but sometimes asking questions to the wrong people had gotten her in trouble. She had learned to keep her mouth shut and judge whether a person was approachable or not. With all these thoughts swirling around her head, Jessie almost walked past the book shop. She doubled back her steps a little and went inside. As always, there was a large portrait of Chairman Mao on the wall, out of respect. Jessie inclined her head a little in its general direction under the watchful eye of the store owner. The man nodded in approval before coming out from behind the desk and asking how he cou“Can I have a Harry Potter book, please? The fifth one.” “English or Chinese version?” “English,” Jessie answered, already secure in her decision. The Harry Potter series was immensely famous in China, and she had started to work her way through them slowly in English last year. They were big books that were occasionally hard because of the language, but she wanted to read them in English in case any elements of the book were lost in translation. After getting her book she treated herself to some street made noodles from a nearby stall. Watching how they beat the dough and folded it in on itself constantly made her mouth water Cont….

their biggest fears was for Jessie to become ill Jessie knew they went through this ritual every day because they loved her, but it was extremely annoying. “Have you dropped that silly notion about changing majors?” her mother asked when Jessie had finished her list. “No, not quite. It sounds like you’ve had a good birthday.” Jessie didn’t feel much like talking to her parents after that arguement, and soon made her excuses and hung up. She found it incredibly unfair that her parents wouldn’t let her pursue her own dream and career, even though she understood their motives for doing so. Yes, they were trying to keep her best interests at heart, but they couldn’t really see what she needed in her life right now. They were too far away, in another province entirely. Jessie quickly realised that she didn’t feel in the mood to celebrate anymore. She wrapped up her noodles and ate as she walked back to the dormitory, where she started on her summer homework.
