19
Challenge the future
22
Finance • • • • •
Delft University of Techology
Challenge the future
23
Marketing • • • • • • • •

IED: Project Research and Design • To integrate all you have learned in different modules in your project • To explore methods for research and design during your project • To share your research and design • To create a project plan
Project plan • Mission of the project (the higher goal: not too concrete, nor too abstract) • Scope (what will you and what will you not do) • Portrait of the organization you will work for and their questions, needs and desires • Summary of deskresearch: social economic context, current situation before you start your project, previous projects that addressed your question, best and worst practices, all other research relevant for your project • Analyses of the problem (what is the problem and how will your solution contribute to the mission of the project) • Project structure (what will you, how will you do it, when and with which milestones and deliverables) • Project organisation (stakeholders, project team (internal and external), collaboration and division of tasks between team members) • Intended presentation and continuation of the project after you leave • Management of risk, alternative scenario’s, what if … • Assessment of safety and security of project and country in which you will work
Also include in your project plan: • A BMC, as is taught in Sustainable Enrepreneurship • Business and Finance (disHnct between internal and external, between your own finance and of the organizaHon you work for) • Development context: how does your work contribute to development • How will culture, and differences in cultures, influence your project and results (List of 11)
Gingerresearch plaSorm: • Coming 4th of September, bring your computer • Editorial design of communicaHon in and around your project, project plan and presentaHon • Gingerresearch facilitates the sharing of research. • Gingerresearch shows individual contribuHons in group processes • Publishing in professional way of research and design.
Ginger: hVp:// tudelX.gingerresearch.net • Whatever you do for the group is also made publicly available. • It gives an opportunity to learn from each other • All the blogs can be put on it and traceable: you can see how other groups are doing.
Ginger: hVp:// tudelX.gingerresearch.net • Also the work on the project plan and final report is done in ginger. • The ginger contribuHons can be labeled as belonging to e.g. the final report, PDF made out of it to deliver to the supervisor. Mind you!: • You have to think of how and what you publish! • Self reflecHon, sensiHve judgments or observaHons should not be published in ginger or only very tacHcally and indirect. • But they should be part of the final report! • In the end you have to deliver the complete report with the material from Ginger and elsewhere. • The same counts for the project plan • Lecture on ginger next week Friday! See schedule.

The drama of development • Development projects and start ups often fail, examples in the minor, e.g. water projects in Cameroon • Successful projects or businesses do not always contribute to economic development, sometimes they are even counterproductive, e.g. an Oxfam Novib financed water pumps project in Bangladesh brought poor people in debt, ruining their lives. Or Shell in Nigeria, bringing devastation and unrest to the coastal areas • Success and failure often determined by the context which is enabling or impeding Delft University of Techology

39
Points and questions of departure • Entrepreneurship is not necessarily successful • Entrepreneurship does not automatically lead to economic development So: • Under which conditions • is entrepreneurship successful? • leads entrepreneurship to socio-economic development? • Focused on poor countries!

What is development?
• Self-sustained process of economic growth and social change, ultimately based on human rights and the possibilities of nature, organization and technology • Sustainable in terms of ecological possibilities and social equity effects, beside economic opportunities • Transition from a stagnating economy and society to a growing welfare state • Industrialization processes all over the world following the Industrial Revolution in 18th century England Delft University of Techology
Challenge the future
42
42
Development debate among economists • Jeffrey Sachs: overcome “poverty trap” through “big push” with foreign aid • Dambisa Moyo: “dead aid”, stop “donorcracies”, initiate endogenous growth with help of investments from and trade-agreements with China
• Paul Collier: institutional reforms, exploiting resources without “resource curse” • William Easterly: small steps, bottom-up, entrepreneurship • David Landes: work hard, belief in progress, free market & favourable institutions (contracts, patents etc.) Delft University of Techology
Challenge the future
43
43
Development and culture 1. Universalism vs. particularism (What is more important, rules or relationships?) 2. Individualism vs. collectivism (communitarianism) (Do we function in a group or as individuals?) 3. Neutral vs. emotional (Do we display our emotions?) 4. Specific vs. diffuse (How separate we keep our private and working lives) 5. Achievement vs. ascription (Do we have to prove ourselves to receive status or is it given to us?) 6. Sequential vs. synchronic (Do we do things one at a time or several things at once?) 7. Internal vs. external control (Do we control our environment or are we controlled by it?) Delft University of Techology

Eindverslag vereisten Content: • Report of the project, facts, results, all relevant information. • The line of events of the internship, problems encountered, solutions found. • Self-reflection evaluating one’s own performance From the subjects of the minor curriculum issues to be attended to: • Entrepreneurship: what is the business model? • Business and finance: what is the business case (“verdienmodel”)? • Sustainability, development, culture: reflection on the contribution of the project to development, as well as a reflection on cultural differences and their relation towards civil society and governance. Here there are three questions to answer: • What does your project contribute to development? • Have you dealt communicatively and tactically (but also effectively) with the cultural differences? • What is the contribution of the project to an effective business culture consisting of a justifiable mix of traditional and new values?
