Last time in this regular feature we enthusiastically let you all know that the Happy Buccaneer had begun a new lease of life with a facelift and increase of crane capacity to 2x 700 mt. Unfortunately, by accident we put an old photo of the ship on the MIM’s cover, which we, of course, shouldn’t have allowed to happen. So, once again we bring this ship into the spotlight, but this time with the right picture.

All stars shine. The Milky Way covers the sky like a belt of soft light. Meteors enter the earth’s atmosphere, some more colourful than others, each with its own past, its own story.
Andere werelden ontdekken. Naast me staat meteoroloog Jacob Kuiper.
Before I turn in I’m on deck staring into the endless sky, thinking of home. There it’s to do with the heavens. Only in a very low polder perhaps, far away in a meadow, or somewhere in the heath land, stars can I see the stars. See what they’re saying. Discover other worlds. Faraway places, further away than my destination with this ship. A colleague comes to stand beside me. We are sailing from Huelva to Cartagena. The Mediterranean is calm. There almost is no wind. Our ship makes a very nicely lit bow wave. ‘Stars in the sea’, I hear somebody saying. Suddenly I’m back in De Bilt, behind my computer, working on the Dutch Aquamarine phenomena for the The Marine Observers’ Log on Wikipedia. Beside me I notice meteorologist Jacob Kuiper. ‘Bioluminescense’, he says, ‘when you go under water with a diving mask, it seems like you’re floating in a universe filled with stars’. He holds a dvd in his hand which I put in the player. Leonid pictures. Again there were many. When I go to thank Jacob he has already disappeared.

Have you ever witnessed unusual meteorological conditions at sea, or observed a remarkable astronomical phenomenon during your watch? Or perhaps your ship has been visited by a school of dolphins, a pod of whales, or by some strange looking seabird? Maybe you have been surprised by a meteor or UFO racing across the night sky, or found your ship surrounded by a bioluminescent ocean?
Whenever something curious or unusual is observed at sea there is a natural inclination to want to share the experience with your colleagues on board. However, such observations may have wider scientific interest and could be of great value to researchers and experts ashore.
For many years, voluntary marine observers have been encouraged by National Meteorological Services to supplement their standard weather reports with details of any interesting or significant phenomena observed at sea. Traditionally, these observations were recorded in dedicated sections of the Ships Meteorological Logbook. Having been collected by visiting Port Meteorological Officers, these observations were often reproduced in marine publications and journals. The most interesting observations were also sent to consulting experts for their professional comments, which could then be fed back to the observer. Was it really a basking shark, a black footed albatross, St Elmo’s Fire, crepuscular rays, a lunar rainbow, abnormal refraction etc. that was observed on that day in that particular location? In recent years, the use of hardcopy logbooks has been largely phased out by many National Meteorological Services and have been gradually replaced by the use of electronic logbooks, such as TurboWin* and SEAS. While the primary function of these electronic logbooks continues to be to record the weather observations, they nevertheless include modules to allow observers to record a variety of additional observations. In particular, TurboWin logbook software, which is now in use on the majority of European Voluntary Observing Ships, includes a dedicated section to permit additional phenomena reports to be logged and transmitted back to the National Meteorological Service that recruited the ship to undertake weather observations. Because such additional observations are now recorded in electronic format it is a comparatively easy process to transfer them to a website so that they can be accessible to everyone—observers, experts

and laymen alike—who have access to the internet. To this end a dedicated new website has recently been established. Although the new website is primarily intended to provide a repository for any interesting or significant observations that have been reported by voluntary observers in electronic logbooks, reports are welcome from all legitimate sources. The site has therefore been given the title “The Marine Observers’ Log” and is available to everyone at the following URL:
http://esurfmar.meteo.fr/wikilog Because the Marine Observers’ Log has been developed for the web using the well established MediaWiki software, it is already becoming known by the abbreviated name “Wikilog.” An important feature of the website is the fact that it is not static. Anyone with a recognised interest in marine observing can make a request to open an account (details on the website) and add observations directly if they so wish. Each page on the site also contains a discussion tab for consulting experts, scientists, researchers, experts and other interested observers to add comments or feedback on the observations. Links from observations can also be made to related information drawn from the popular Wikipedia encyclopedia. Observations are archived in the Marine Observers’ Log by category and date. Although the website was only set up a few months, ago nearly 400 observations have already been logged. It should be noted, however, that all material included on the website is subject to copyright provisions, which must closely be observed. It is hoped that marine observers reading the Mariners Weather Log will appreciate the value of the new website and will contribute any interesting observations they experience while at sea. Acknowledgment—Particular thanks must be given to Pierre Blouch, E-SURFMAR Programme Manager, for all his help in setting up the new Wikilog website. * Full details of the TurboWin programme are available at http://www.knmi.nl/turbowin, where copies of the program and associated utilities can be downloaded free of charge. * Under a cooperative agreement between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), software has been created to assist Volunteer Observing Ships (VOS) in submitting marine weather reports and participating in the Automated Mutual-assistance VEssel Rescue system (AMVER). Met name in Spanje profiteerde men

After the successful observations of the Leonids in 2001 and 2002 there was another chance to see this famous meteor shower last year. On 19th November 2006 around 05.00 UTC the Earth would pass through a narrow dust-tube, filled with tiny particles of the mother-comet Tempel-Tuttle, originating this time from the comet passage in 1933. Information from former passes confirmed that computer model computations were very accurate when comparing the expected and the observed meteor activity. Because the diameter of these Leonid dustbands is quite small, the Earth is able to pass through them in a few hours. So, if you want to observe the core passage of such a Leonid swarm, you have to be in the right place at the right time. In practice this means that there are just a few parts of the world which are ‘the right place at the right time’, and this time Europe, Africa and much of South America and the Atlantic ocean would be the favoured areas. Mostly “Atlantic” sites The aim of the ‘marine’ observing campaign was to obtain meteor-count reports from as many remote places as possible. Most observations of meteors and such like come from land, so the oceans are still the large “white” spots in the international observing program. Therefore information from marine based observers is important to form a complete picture of outburst activity. In 2001 around 40 vessels delivered a rich volume of observations with very detailed reports. The 2002 observing camping resulted in 27 ship-observations. The astronomers computing the expected 2006 Leonids, had forecast a significantly lower rate of meteors and that their physical

[email protected], waarvoor alvast mijn dank. ]
appearance would be less bright than in previous years. In 2006 nine vessels contributed to the observation cam-
paign. Seven observed the meteors on November 19th, two or three vessels reported meteors on other days. From those who were in mostly clear sky conditions on the 19th, counts of 10 to 50 meteors in a few hours were received. In this period some adjacent meteor swarms are also active, so a percentage of the observed meteors are members of those other swarms. We now can conclude that computer computations were again in line with the observed amounts. At the peak of the meteor activity (04.30 – 05.00 UTC) most experienced observers in Spain counted two Leonids/minute. Outside of that time the meteor activity was significantly lower. Future prospects During the coming years, Leonid activity is expected to be quite low compared to what we have seen during the ‘outburst’ years. Still the Leonid-dust particles are distributed in some strange and sometimes completely unexpected ways (such as in 1998), so it’s not absolutely certain that no outbursts will occur during coming Novembers. Large observing campaigns will not be started but perhaps some small reminders with data concerning expected peak moments will be sent out by the PMO or published in future MIMeditions, thus giving interested observers the best chance to catch the meteor showers again. And one final remark; if you are at sea (or in port) and eyewitness an exceptional meteor shower (fireball or short outburst of many meteors) please report it to the astronomers. Short outbursts of even quite faint meteors are also always worth reporting. These reports can be sent by Turbo Win, but you can also report your observations directly to me by email at
[email protected] . Thanks in advance. Many thanks Again I would like to express my thanks to all participants for their valuable data. In the coming months this data will be reviewed by astronomers and some results will be published in scientific magazines and online. ]

If every year a prize for the phenomena of the year was awarded, there’s no doubt that in 2006 ‘climate change’ would have won it. And in 2007 we could give it the award in advance because it will remain a focus of media attention. Climate change certainly is a first order phenomena because of the greenhouse effect. It concerns us all. According to the latest repport from the ‘Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’ (IPCC) mankind has had an unmistakable influence on our climate which will affect us for centuries, even if we take regulations to restrict our influence.
So our climate has loudly rung an alarm bell and gone to red alert. As red as the ‘red tide’ observed by the Nedlloyd Europa. Action is needed to put it back to green: via the ‘abnormal big orange lightning flash’ observed by the Maersk Miami back to the ‘green flash’ by the Jo Cedar. Bioluminescence The red tide seen by the Nedlloyd Europa belongs to a species of algae with the scientific name Noctiluca scintillans. Literally it means ‘flashing night light’ or ‘night spark’ in the corridors. It can be observed on a warm summer night on the beach when white-crested waves are illuminating. According to insiders the phenomena will be observed at its best when you go into the water with a diving mask: ‘Certainly you float in a universe filled with stars.’ Waterspouts in the Street of Malaga on November 14th 2006. Photo by Officer B. van der Meijden from the Fairpartner.

The crew of the Dutch Aquamarine, on its way from Huelva to Cartagena, stayed on board and enjoyed the real universe: ‘nice bow wave lit by illuminating algae. Condition: flat sea, a nice star-spangled sky, almost no wind, so it’s a beautiful Mediterranean December night.’ The Iver Expert was on the Rio Magdalena near Barranquilla, Colombia when it observed bioluminescence: ‘The Rio Magdalena creates a huge outflow of discoloured and disturbed water in the vicinity of the Colombian coast. We just passed the limit of the discoloured water. Going from dark blue to lightish cyan, but we are 38 nm off shore! A lot of debris, organic and non organic is seen here. Current changes along with the river outflow, water depth remains around the 50m mark.’ Meteors For a moment a star-spangled sky under water, for a moment a star-spangled sky above water. Apollogracht: ‘Very bright, was visible about 1 second, at elevation about 40 degrees, azimuth 320. At the end fall to several pieces.’ Atlasgracht: ‘Very bright ‘falling star’. Here is a selection of other observations Apollogracht: ‘Very bright, was visible about 1 second, at elevation about 40 degrees, azimuth 320. At the end fall to several pieces.’ Atlasgracht: ‘Very bright ‘falling star’. Visible for almost two and a half seconds. Smoke visible in tail.’ Maersk Miami: ‘Several falling stars from 20.00 UTC till 00.00 UTC. Cannot tell if meteorite or some burned satellite part.’ Sand Smaller that what you’d expect from the size of their trail, the size of meteors is mostly as big as a grain of sand when they enter the earth atmosphere. Another kind of sand falling from the sky was experienced by the Lijnbaans-

mosfeer binnendringen. De Suomigracht ‘saw several rainbows, also near the vessel.’ During watch saw quite a large circle around the moon, around fills in the observation category: halo, but this is actually a ‘manolo.’’
gracht: ‘Dusty sky, leaves light film on dust on deck, looks like haze.’ Rainbow The Traveller observed a double rainbow: ‘Approaching Sibutu-passage (Indonesia) observing rainbow. While making the OBS at the synoptic hour a double rainbow observed to port. When it started only the right part was visible. The interior rainbow half visible (90 degrees), the exterior one less than a quarter (about 30 degrees). A little later the right part was disappearing and the left part was shown. The exterior one was at a minimum. Both parts getting near to the ship (a few 100 metres) touching the water. Light showers from cumulus clouds. At station very slight drizzle.’ The Suomigracht ‘saw several rainbows, also near the vessel.’ Halo A halo was seen by the Happy Buccaneer but they describe this phenomena differently: ’During watch saw quite a large circle around the moon, around fills in the observation category: halo, but this is actually a ‘manolo.’’ Eclipse The March 29 solar eclipse was observed by the Pacific in the Cape Verde Islands neighbourhood. There the sun was about half darkened. The central path of the total eclipse was more southerly. From Northeast-Brasil over the Atlantic to Nortwest-Africa, over Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Libya, the Northwest of Egypt and on to Crete and Cyprus, over Turkey to Georgia and Kazakhstan. Refraction Refraction was observed by the Prinsenborg: ‘During passage of the English Channel, the fog cleared up and revealed a beautifully clear example of refraction where we could see a inverted copy of the vessels on the English coast touching the original. The phenomena was visible for more then one hour and with several vessels.’

Refraction Refraction werd waargenomen door de Prinsenborg: ‘During passage of the English Channel, the fog cleared up and revealed a beautifully clear example of refraction where we could see a inverted copy of the vessels on the English coast touching the original. The phenomena was visible for more then one hour and with several vessels.’ After departure, sailing in and just outside tokyo bay, ‘arctic’sea smoke restricted the visibility below 1 nm. Due to the wind , a northerly wind , force 5 beaufort. It was a ‘spooky’ sight.’ Ook de Coral Millepora kwam in de mist terecht: ‘When entering the Gulf of Finland, over a long distance, a fogbank was noticed. The bank was about 10 nm long, but only about a mile wide after passing it with a 90 degree angle. All the time the sun could be seen. Weather: mostly blue sky, CM 7/8, cloud cover 2/8. Sea state : ripple before entering fog bank. Wind: variable 1 beaufort. Sea state: smooth after passing the fog. Wind: 145 force 2/3 beaufort.’ This spout stayed stationary in this position for about 20 minutes. The spout was clearly visible, white colour and reached the surface. After 20 minutes it dissolved but at 21:15 another spout was noticed from the same cloud as before, this time it was on 7-8 miles distance. Again clearly visible and again reaching the surface.’

Sea smoke Sea smoke stole the view from the Coral Rubrum: ‘After departure, sailing in and just outside Tokyo Bay, ‘arctic’sea smoke restricted the visibility below 1 nm. Caused by the wind, a northerly wind , force 5 beaufort. It was a ‘spooky’ sight.’ The Coral Millepora also got into the fog: ‘When entering the Gulf of Finland, over a long distance, a fogbank was noticed. The bank was about 10 nm long, but only about a mile wide after passing it with a 90 degree angle. All the time the sun could be seen. Weather: mostly blue sky, CM 7/8, cloud cover 2/8. Sea state : ripple before entering fog bank. Wind : variable 1 beaufort. Sea state: smooth after passing the fog. Wind: 145 force 2/3 beaufort.’ Master Vorstius Kruijff from the Coral Carbonic took a picture from a fogbank in distance in the bay Porsgrunn/Rafnes, Norway. There’s a colour image on the back cover of this MIM. Waterspouts We received some beautiful waterspout observations from the Fairpartner and the Smitwijs Singapore: ‘Notice at 20.15 a waterspout on 1 mile distance. This spout stayed stationary in this position for about 20 minutes. The spout was clearly visible, white colour and reached the surface. After 20 minutes it dissolved but at 21:15 another spout was noticed from the same cloud as before, this time it was on 7-8 miles distance. Again clearly visible and again reaching the surface.’ The Fairpartner was sailing in the Street of Malaga when it observed a series of waterspouts. Officer van der Meijden took some pictures. There are some colour images on the back cover of this MIM. Depression Officer Honkoop on the Maersk Klaipeda (was Maersk Kingston) has sent us a barograph trace recording a deep depression near Unimak Island in the Aleutian, Alaska. The lowest pressure, measured on December 8th, was 954 hPa. According to the weather map the ship was in the centre of the depression. At that time the wind was southeast, 7 Beaufort gusting gale force 20 m/s (8 Beaufort). Marine animals Of course many whales and dolphins were observed. There

Winter 2006/2007

From: Stratos LES Services Re: Advisory fm Australian BOM to ships lodging their weather observations via Perth LES. SAC 41 is no longer available via LES 22. Please use SAC 1241 via LES 12 in the POR and IOR. ]

Code 41 Perth LES 222 and 322 In February we were informed that Perth has closed its Inmarsat-c station. The meteorological institutes therefore had to find a solution for the OBS traffic to Australia. Code 41 for station (3)12 was already in use by the Netherlands so for Australia we had to launch an alternative Special Access Code 1241 for OBS’s. Code 41 for LES 212 (Por) was not in use by the Netherlands, so we gave it to Australia. The consequences are: when you use Special Access Code 41 in IOR (station 312) instead of code 1241, your OBS will be sent to Burum in the Netherlands. Since the weather in IOR will be of more importance to Australia than the Netherlands it’s better to use code 1241. Note: If you try to send your OBS to Perth you will receive the following message: From: Stratos LES Services Re: Advisory fm Australian BOM to ships lodging their weather observations via Perth LES. SAC 41 is no longer available via LES 22. Please use SAC 1241 via LES 12 in the POR and IOR. Alternatively please use SAC 41 via LES 12 in the POR Royal honours and rewards 2008 It has been awhile since the Royal honours and rewards in 2006. In the meantime we started making preparations for this event in 2008. We still appreciate your dedication to the meteorology, or, as the KNMI director stated during the previous rewardings: ‘The observations that you make are not only profitable for the shipping industry in general, but also help to fullfill the mission statement of the KNMI’. We hope to welcome you here again next year. ]
