Ontwikkeling van een intelligente autonome watermeter De huidige generatie watermeters vereist een manuele controle van de meterstand, wat een omslachtige en dure operatie is. Dankzij microwaterturbines en 3G-technologie, is het mogelijk om een autonome watermeter te ontwikkelen die dit automatisch doet. In deze masterproef vertrek je van een bestaande waterturbine en meet je de karakteristiek om deze te gebruiken als gecombineerde generator en debietmeter, met bijzondere aandacht voor de fouten op de meting. Daarna ontwikkel je een data-acquisitiesysteem dat het verbruik doorstuurt naar de watermaatschappij via een 3G-module. Het werk omvat ● ● ● ● ●

Draadloze energieoverdracht via inductieve resonantie Energie overbrengen naar roterende mechanische onderdelen zoals winturbinewieken of mixers is nog steeds een lastig probleem door de slijtagegevoeligheid van sleepringen. Inductie via resonantie kan hiervoor een oplossing bieden, en er bestaan reeds verschillende implementaties (Qi, Witricity). In deze masterproef bestudeer je de state of the art in inductieve energieoverdracht en bouw je zelf een prototype waarmee 500 mW draadloos kan overgedragen worden.

Ontwikkeling van een smart watch met ambient heat harvesting Ontwikkelingen in wearable electronics bieden opportuniteiten voor health monitoring en andere medische applicaties. Het voornaamste probleem met deze technologie is dat de levensduur van de levensduur van de batterij zodanig kort is dat de technologie nauwelijks nuttig kan ingezet worden. In deze masterproef zal je een conceptueel ontwerp van een smart watch die gevoed wordt met omgevingsenergie, implementeren en verder optimaliseren. Performantieanalyse van thin film fotovoltaïsche cellen Door het grote aantal verschillende types fotovoltaïsche cellen (PV) op de markt, wordt het erg moeilijk om het meest geschikte celtype te kiezen voor een bepaalde applicatie. Met name bij thin film cellen (CdTe, CIGS, perovskite, …) zijn de karakteristieken nauwelijks bekend. In deze masterproef onderzoek je de performantie van verschillende commerciële types thin film PV cellen onder variërende lichtomstandigheden, en stelt hiervoor bijpassende modellen op voor toepassing in energy harvesting applicaties. Upgrade stuurelektronica Hartford CNC freesmachine De Hartford freesmachine in het Mechatronicalabo is in staat om in staal te frezen, maar wordt niet gebruikt omdat de stuurelektronica verouderd is. We willen de verouderde elektronica vervangen door USBCNC. Reverse engineering van de bestaande stuurlogica, ontwikkelen van een interface voor de bestaande servo drives en design van een interface tussen USBCNC en de rotationele toolchanger staan centraal in deze Masterproef. EIS interface voor corrosiemonitoring Om preventief onderhoud te kunnen plannen van ondergrondse pijpleidingen, moet de corrosie gemeten worden. Dit gebeurt via elektrochemische impedantiespectroscopie (EIS). In deze masterproef ontwikkel je in samenwerking met de SURF vakgroep een analoge front-end voor het uitvoeren van EIS-tests op ondergrondse buizen. Hiervoor maak je gebruik van analoge signaalverwerking en data-acquisitie.

Energieopslag voor embedded systems met energy harvesting Met de introductie van secundaire solid state cellen verdwijnt de voornaamste beperking van batterijtechnologie voor autonome ingebedde systemen met lange levensduur. De capaciteit van de huidige generatie solid state cellen ligt rond de 2 mAh, wat een factor 100 minder is dan gangbare Li-Ion of NiMH cellen. In deze masterproef onderzoek je de praktische relevantie van deze cellen, en vergelijk je met alternatieve technologiën zoals EDLC’s. Vermogensanalyse voor RTOS op ultra low power microcontrollers De huidige generatie embedded systems vergt van één ultra low power microcontroller verschillende taken: sensing, data processing en asynchrone communicatie via één of meerdere interfaces. Hiervoor is een RTOS-implementatie vereist is erg dicht bij het power path management staat en optimaal kan gebruik maken van de pieken in een onregelmatig energy harvesting regime. Wideband ambient RF energy harvesting in Brussel Een weerkerend probleem bij RF energy harvesting is dat de meeste antennes een goede karakteristiek vertonen voor een zeer smalle frequentieband, en het daardoor moeilijk is om het volledige RF spectrum efficient te benutten voor de voeding van ultra low power embedded systems via RF energy harvesting. In deze masterproef doe je een experimenteel onderzoek van antennes en antenne arrays met als doel het potentieel voor RF energy harvesting op diverse locaties in Brussel in kaart te brengen. Environmental monitoring met een autonoom mobiel meetstation In stedelijke omgevingen wordt de woonkwaliteit direct beïnvloed door een klein aantal factoren zoals luchtkwaliteit, geluidshinder enzovoort. Het manueel installeren van meetstations om deze factoren te bepalen is omslachtig en duur. Dit kan opgelost worden met mobiele stations die gebruik maken van satellietnavigatie en autonoom opereren tussen verschillende vooraf vastgelegde coördinaten. In deze masterproef is het de bedoeling om een prototype van dergelijk station te ontwerpen en te implementeren op basis van een drone. Implementatie van een ingebed Indoor Lokalisatie platform Vandaag is het GPS onmisbaar in de huidige samenleving. Echter kan het GPS niet of nauwelijks gebruikt worden in indoor omgevingen. Hierop worden alternatieven aangeboden die gebaseerd zijn op afstandsbepaling via ultrasone signalen in combinatie met radiosignalen. Afstandsmetingen in het labo hebben reeds aangetoond dat een nauwkeurigheid van 1 cm mogelijk is, tot op een afstand van meer dan 8 m zonder obstakels. Om over een gebruiksklaar (draadloos) systeem te beschikken, moeten nog een aantal stappen ondernomen worden zoals: draadloze synchronisatie, trilateratie en de interfacing met de huidige FPGA implementatie. Geautomatische benchmarking omgeving voor MEMS microfoon MEMS microfoons kennen diverse toepassingen, waaronder (indoor) lokalisatie van (ultrasone) geluidsbronnen. De meeste MEMS microfoons worden bestemd voor een bepaalde toepassing, waardoor enkel de daarvoor bedoelde karakteristieken in de datasheet worden opgenomen. Hierdoor is het achterhalen of een microfoon ook voor andere toepassingen gebruikt kan worden een complexe aangelegenheid. In deze masterproef bouw je een geautomatiseerde opstelling waarmee een uitgebreide responsanalyse van de MEMS microfoon gemaakt kan worden. Modular MEMS Microphones arrays for sound-source localization Sound source localization is an interesting research topic for environmental monitoring. This thesis proposes the use of a modular MEMS microphones array to detect the direction of arrival of sound sources. This modular implementation must be also scalable in order to combine the response of multiple modules. The modular and scalable characteristic of such array is one of the major research aspects. The processing component of this modular array must be implemented on an FPGA. Sound Map generation on an Embedded system Nowadays most of our environments are monitored by wireless sensors. An example is the noise pollution monitoring in urban environments. Sound maps are graphical catalogs of noise, local ambient sound, or anything else which is audible. The target of this proposal is to generate a real-time sound map of the surrounding environment using an embedded platform (FPGA). Implementation of video watermarking on an FPGA Real-time watermarking applications need more computational power that can be found on multi-cores CPUs. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are hardware accelerators that provide a programmable and massively parallel architecture. This technology offers high performance on image processing applications, becoming a competitive alternative for real-time watermarking. Smart Vision on Zedboard with Low-Cost Cameras or Kinect Xilinx’s Vivado HLS provides support for many OpenCV functions. Those functions, together with low-cost and low-resolution cameras, allow fast smart vision implementations on FPGAs. This thesis proposes the exploration of smart vision applications to exploit the available platforms (Zedboard) and tools (Vivado HLS). The main targets are stereo cameras or Kinect. Tasks ● Study and propose a framework of OpenCV libraries for HLS and Zynq. ● Evaluate and improve different smart vision techniques for the current platform. ● Develop or adapt the most promising smart vision algorithms while processing on real-time. Motion detection on Zedboard with Low-Cost Cameras Motion detection is an interesting application for early alarms. Despite already exist several embedded applications for ARM processors or even Zynq, the main purpose of this thesis is its acceleration by using OpenCV and to generate an alert through LAN. This application would combined the ARM processor and the FPGA available on the Zynq processor. Tasks ● Study and improvement of the current motion detection using OpenCV libraries. ● Develop and implement the LAN communication for the current platform. ● Extend the motion detection features by recognizing objects. Performance comparison of AES implementation using Vivado HLS The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is the official U.S. specification for the encryption of electronic data. This flexible and fast algorithm allows a robust encryption. Many implementations have used FPGAs as hardware accelerators, exploiting the FPGA’s specific resources (DSPs). On the other hand, new high-level synthesis tools such as Xilinx’s Vivado HLS provides a fast design implementation thanks to a high-level algorithm description. However, those implementations do not need to be as area and performance efficient as the handmade ones. Semi-assisted Design Space Exploration for SoC FPGAs Xilinx’s Vivado HLS is a high-level synthesis tool based on Eclipse environment which generates HDL code for Xilinx’s FPGAs from C/C++ code. One of the main advantages of this tool is the fast design space exploration thanks to its compiler directives. Furthermore, the tool supports TCL, which provides an interesting opportunity to automate process. The proposed thesis implement an semi-assisted design exploration for Eclipse/Vivado HLS tool, allowing to search for the most promise designs and to test them in the board. Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration of a Multi-FPGA platform The dynamic partial reconfiguration is an unique feature of FPGAs. This capability allows to reconfigure a region of the FPGA without stop the processing. Some of the benefits such are power and area savings. A high-performance platform based on FPGAs is available at the Rapptorlab for those compute intensive applications. The main target of this thesis is to implement a fast start-up by partially reconfigure the PCIe controller and those common logic. Mobile e-Voting An e-voting system allows the voter to express his vote by electronic means. Serious security measurements should be defined in order to make the system reliable. Unfortunately, cryptographic operations require high computational needs. Consequently, an efficient security protocol needs to be defined for e-voting systems on mobile phone applications. The main target of this thesis is to build a secure mobile system enabling e-Voting.

Online testen en benchmarken van je GPU GPU-technologie wordt gedreven door de game- en graphicsmarkt. Meer transistoren worden gebruikt voor rekenen dan op een CPU. Dit geeft de GPU zijn enorme rekenkracht. Deze kan gebruikt worden voor rekenintensieve opdrachten die buiten de typische graphics vallen. Een goed inzicht in de GPU-architectuur is echter nodig. De karakteristieken kunnen we empirisch vaststellen a.d.h.v. benchmarkprogramma’s. Via WebCL kan dit in een website geintegreerd worden. Taken ● Designen van de benchmarks zodat alle GPUkarakteristieken worden behandeld. Implementation of a ECG measurement platform of educational purposes The Electro-cardiogram (ECG) is a commonly used diagnostic tool to assess the electrical and muscular functions of the heart. Your task is to develop a modular ‘3 or more’-lead ECG measurement system for educational purposes. The ECG platform should give the students the possibility to investigate the impact of different electronic related aspects (input impedance, CMRR, analog /digital filter design, etc.) as well as bio-related noise sources on the output of the ECG system. Uitbreiding EDISON intelligente verlichting met draadloze sensoren Het EDISON intelligente verlichtingssysteem is onder meer toegepast in het VUB studentenrestaurant en IR decanaat. In deze thesis wordt het EDISON project uitgebreid om naast bedrade sensoren ook gebruik te maken van draadloze sensoren die zich in een draadloos sensor netwerk situeren.

Ontwikkelen van een smalbandig open-source power-line systeem Smalbandige power-line systemen worden steeds interessanter voor intelligente meters en Internet of Things. Bestaande oplossingen zijn gesloten en beperkt in mogelijkheden. Een open-source variant, gebaseerd op bestaande 802.15.4 code kan zorgen voor meer functionaliteit waardoor het mogelijk is om het systeem uitvoerig te testen, en interactie met andere systemen te vereenvoudigen. Energiemetingen voor Zolertia Z1 draadloze sensoren Het optimaal meten en beheren van energieverbruik is een van de grootste uitdagingen die opgelost moeten worden om “The Internet of Things” algemeen bruikbaar te maken. Toch bestaat er geen aangeraden methode om dit verbruik te meten. Dit is nochtans zeer belangrijk om verder zinvol onderzoek mogelijk te maken.
