Abstract The focus of this bachelor thesis is a short story by Stephen King called „The End of the Whole Mess― and its translation into Czech language. The practical part of the thesis consists of my own translation of the short story. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on Stephen King and his life and work and on the analysis of my translation in accordance with linguistic theories by Jiří Levý and Dagmar Knittlová, and its comparison to the official translation by Ivan Němeček from 2004.

1. Introduction – A translator’s work Lately I have been often wondering how many people think about the translator’s work when they read a book which was not originally written in their mother language. How many people think about the various difficulties the translator had to overcome in order to finish the translation. About the compromises and concessions they had to make, about the numerous untraslatable idioms and puns they had to deal with, about the distictions and differences between English and Czech syntax. How many people do that? Not that many, I would venture. I think that the reason, why people try not to think about translator too much, is because it reminds them that they are not reading an original text. They are not reading the actual words their favourite writer put on paper. What they do, in fact, is they read the work of a middleman. If I may exxaggerate a bit, the translator is in many ways a shadowy figure in the background that most people do not think about. His or her name may be printed in a small text in the back of the book, but the majority of the readers will never read it. And yet, without their hard work, there would not even be a book in the first place. Obviously there are exceptions. Martin Hilský, who is probably the most famous translator in the Czech Republik; Jan Kantůrek and his fantastic translation of Terry Prattchett’s Discworld series. The recently deceased Pavel Medek, who, in his translation of the Harry Potter series, came up with many great neologisms, and whose brilliance only really shows, when we compare his masterpiece to the – rather dull – Slovak translation. But those are just the exceptions. The majority of Czech translators remain in anonymity, and I do not see that changing in recent future. The job of a translator is in many ways a demanding one. I have been translating various English movies and TV series for quite a few years, and I feel confident in that statement. It is often extremely frustrating, knowing that no matter how good a translation is, it will always be just a shadow of the original. Sometimes the shadow imitates the original shape very close and precisely, but it still is a shadow, no matter

how sharp its edges are. And yet, as I found time and time again, even the proces of creating this proverbial shadow can be very rewarding and fulfilling. And that is what keeps me comming back to translating. The struggle between frustration and and satisfaction is always there. I just have to hope the satisfaction will prevail.

1.2. About the short story The focus of this text is a translation of a short story called The End of the Whole Mess, which was written by Stephen King and first published as a part of a short story collection Nightmares and Dreamscapes in 1993.1 I chose Stephen King because I have been an avid reader of his work for a long time, and I think that he writes at a level which is rather easy to translate (as opposed to, for example, Cormac McCarthy, who is my favourite author, but whose prose is full of archaisms and extremely complex syntactic and linguistic structures, and as such it is, at the moment, to difficult for me to translate). The first matter of business which needed to be decided was the text, that I would be translating.(and there is plenty to choose from, as Stephen King is one of the most prolific, if not THE most prolific author of our times). Early on, I decided, that I want to translate a complete text, rather than a fraction of the book. Since most of Stephen King’s books range somewhere around 500 or more pages, it was clear to me, that I have to select one of his short stories. To this day Stephen King has published ten short story collections (with eleventh comming up later this year), which combined contain close to one hundred stories.2 That is a lot of ground to cover. I was trying to pick a story that would not be overly long, and that would be interesting not only from a storytelling point of view, but also from the linguistic one. I believe that The End of the Whole Mess meets all of the aforementioned requirements. The story is set in a not too distant future, and paints a picture of Earth, which is ravaged by wars and diseases, with nuclear conflict looming dangerously on the

horizon. In this setting, Stephen King tells a spectacular and epic tale, which would in his own words deserve "thousands of pages and a whole shelf of volumes" (King, „Nightmares and Dreamscapes― p. 67). There are two main characters in the story – the Fornoy brothers: Howard (nicknamed Bow-Wow) and Bobby- and the crux of the tale lies in their fight for preserving the world and making it a peaceful, nonviolent place, with the aid of an invention called "The Calmative". Their plan, however, backfires rather spectacularly, when they, after spreading the Calmative across the globe, discover that the invention has a serious and unplanned side effect – it causes a mental degeneration of all who find themselves in a direct contact with it. The reader discovers all of this in a form of Howard’s first person narration. The story itself is interesting, but hardly a groundbreaking material. What sets it apart from dozens of other similar tales is a twist, which I personally consider to be very clever: at the beginning of the story, Bobby is already dead, and Howard injects himself with the Calmative before he starts to write the account of events, which have lead to this situation. Throughout the story, the reader witnesses, how the Calmative gradually starts to affect Howard and limit his mental abilities; in the final pages, he is no longer capable of writing comprehensibly, and his narration slowly turns into incoherrent rambling. This subversive twist is the main reason why I chose The End of the Whole Mess – I liked the idea of a narrative which is gradually becomming more and more grammatically and syntactically flawed, until what is left is nothing but nonsensical babbling, and I thought that from the translator’s point of view, it was more challenging and interesting than most of King´s short stories. Even though this sort of twist seems tailor-made for a book, and for a book only, the story was actually adapted into a movie and, as expected it is all around inferior version of the tale which is nowhere near as powerful as the original short story. The theoretical part of my thesis will be mainly concerned with the analysis of my translation of The End of the Whole Mess. I drew mainly from Teorie překladu by Jiří Levý and Překlad a překládání by Dagmar Knittlová. Both of these books are written in Czech language, and as such I am forced to quote them in Czech.

The first part of this text will be focused on Stephen King. The aim of this part is to familiarise the reader with the author, and to shortly describe King’s life and his writing career. In the second part of my analysis, I will focus on the most notable lexical, syntactical grammatical differences between my own translation and the official translation by Ivan Němeček. In the Czech Republic, the short story collection Nightmares and Dreamscapes was divided into two volumes and each volume was translated by a different translator; the first, titled Dolanův Cadillac was published in the beginning of 2004 (this is the volume which contains The End of the Whole Mess and which was translated by Ivan Němeček) and the second, titled Pátá čtvrtina came out six months later in the translation by David Petrů. In the third part of the thesis I will focus on the analysis of the translation. I will try to describe and justify some of my translating choices.

2. Stephen King 2.1. Introduction of the author Stephen Edwin King is one of the most famous and prolific American authors of our time. His bibliography consists of close to sixty books and short story collections with two more waiting to be published later this year. He also wrote numerous film scripts (often adaptations of his own books) and plays in a rock band called Rock Bottom Remainders (several of whose members are also writers). The rate with which King writes is staggering (he is known for writing more than 2 000 words per day), especially when compared to some of his colleagues, such as Thomas Harris or George R.R.Martin who are both known to struggle with deadlines and take a years-long breaks between each book. Stephen King, on the other hand seems to be getting even more productive as he ages. Since 2011 he has published at least one book a year (and in 2013, 2014 and 2015 he upped the ante by writing two books per year), and so far he shows no signs of slowing down3.

2.2. Early Life He was born in Portland, Maine on September 21, 1947. When he was a toddler, his parents separated – his father left under the pretense of "going to buy a pack of cigarettes"4 and never came back. King’s family (his older brother David and his mother Ruth) spent the years after this unfortunate event moving from Wisconsin to Indiana to Connecticut, until finally they returned to Maine for good when Stephen King was eleven years old.5 To this day Maine remains the most frequent setting of his books, and he has situated some of his fictional towns here (most notably Derry, the setting of It, Dreamcatcher, 11/22/63 and many others, and Castle Rock, the setting of The Dead Zone, Needful Things, Doctor Sleep and Revival). Stephen King was very young, when he first begun to write, His first literary eforts were four short stories, for which, as he recalls in his memoir, his mother paid him a quarter per story (and that is how he earned his first dollar by writing). 3

(O psaní p. 22; translated by Iva Pekárková) The passion for writing has never left him, and during his years at Durham Elementary School he has written many more stories, mostly for fun or for his brother’s magazine Dave’s Rag. In 1965 he sold a story called I Was a Teenage Grave Robber to a fanzine called Comics Review. In 1971, King was hired as a teacher at Hampden Academy in Maine.6

2.3. Writing career His big breakthrough came in 1973, when he sold his first novel Carrie to the Doubleday publishing house. Carrie was published in 1974 and it was a huge success. During the rest of the decade, King has written four more bestsellers – ‘Salem’s Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), The Stand (1978) and The Dead Zone (1979) – and became a household name.7 In the 1980’s, King battled with a severe drug and alcohol addiction which had a grave effect and his social and family life, but, curiously, his rate of writing remained the same, if not faster (he wrote The Running Man (1982) in seven days (O psaní p. 121; translated by Iva Pekárková) and he has almost no recollection of writing Cujo (1982)). (O psaní p. 78; translated by Iva Pekárková) However, this dark chapter in King’s life had a happy ending, when he (after his friends and family staged an intervention for him) quit drugs and alcohol altogether and has remained sober ever since.8 During the 1970’s, King has invented for himself a literary pseudonym – Richard Bachman. Under this name he secretly published several of his early books, which he thought were to dark and disturbing for his usual audience. There was also another reason for writing under Bachman’s name. As the English Wikipedia states. "At the beginning of Stephen King's career, the general view among publishers was that an author was limited to one book per year, since publishing more would be unacceptable to the public. King therefore wanted to write under another name, in order to increase his publication without over-saturating the market for the King 6

"brand"." He convinced his publisher, Signet Books, to print these novels under a pseudonym.―9 The lid was eventually blown off this secret at the beginning of the 1980’s, and in updated preface (called „The Importance of Being Bachman―) to the Bachman books, King writes that Bachman has died „of cancer of the pseudonym―.10 He did, however, publish two more books under Bachman’s name – The Regulators (1996) and Blaze (2007) and has not excluded the possibility of publishing more Bachman books in the future. In 1999 King experienced a brush with death, not unlike one from his books. He was going for his usual daily walk, when he was struck by a van and was severely injured. The accident left King with a collapsed right lung, multiple fractures of his right leg, scalp laceration and a broken hip. King had to undergo five operations in ten days and months of physical therapy. 11The accident has clearly had a profound effect on him, and the traces of it (as well as the ensuing therapy) can be found in almost every book he has published since, with the accident being most prominently featured in The Dark Tower (2004) – the climax of King’s epic fantasy western series, which was decades in making; in the final two volumes, King himself appears as a character, and the second act of the final book concludes with a very faithful recreation of King’s accident. This is not the only time when King drew inspiration from his own life. As mentioned, most of his books are set in Maine, but the similarities to King’s life does not stop there. Many of King’s (anti)heroes are writers (Jack Torrance from The Shining, William Denbrough from It, Paul Sheldon from Misery and Mike Noonan from Bag of Bones are just a selected few) and many of them are alcoholics or recovering alcoholics (Jack Torrance from The Shining, Danny Torrance from Doctor Sleep). In response to the discovery that Richard Bachman is in fact Stephen King, King has written The Dark Half (1989), a book about a writer whose pseudonym comes to life. As far as The End of the Whole Mess is concerned, King himself admits in the afterword of Nightmares and Dreamscapes, that his brother, Dave King, served as a model for Robert Fornoy’s genious brother. (King, p. 800) 9

2.4 Literary awards Stephen King has received many awards for his literary achievements. According to the English Wikipedia the most notable ones are "Bram Stoker Awards, World Fantasy Awards, and British Fantasy Society Awards. His novella The Way Station(1980) was a Nebula Award novelette nominee. In 2003, the National Book Foundation awarded him the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. His short story "The Man in the Black Suit" (1994) received the O. Henry Award. He has also received awards for his contribution to literature for his entire oeuvre, such as the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (2004), the Canadian Booksellers Association Lifetime Achievement Award (2007), and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America (2007)."12

4. The comparison of my translation and Ivan Němeček´s translation After finishing my own translation of The End of the Whole Mess, I decided to compare it with the official translation by Ivan Němeček. It was a very strange experience, to read a different translation of the text with which I have become so familiar with in the last few months. This part of the text will focus on the most notable differences between these two translations. Firstly, I will always quote the original sentence or a paragraph in English, as written by Stephen King in Nightmares and Dreamscapes. After that, a comparison of both translations will follow (with Mr. Němeček’s translation from Dolanův cadilac being the first, and my translation being the second one).

4.1 CPA She became a successful CPA in DC, met my dad, married him, and took in her shingle when she became pregnant with yours truly. (King, p. 68) Stala se úspěšnou autorizovanou soudní znalkyní v D. C., seznámila se s otcem, vdala se za něj a po otěhotnění firmu zabalila. (King, p. 61; translated by Ivan Němeček) „Stala se úspěšnou veřejnou účetní ve Washingtonu, potkala tátu, provdala se za něj, a kdyţ otěhotněla, tak s prací skončila.― (Ondřej Kazda) With this example, it can be argued that my translation of "CPA" as "veřejná účetní" is probably the correct one, as the abbreviation "CPA" stands for "certified public accountant"13 It also makes more sense than "soudní znalkyně", when we take into account that just a few paragraphs later, Stephen King writes: "By '84 she was doing taxes for some of my dad's associates — she called this her 'little hobby.' By the time Bobby was born in 1987, she was handling taxes, investment portfolios, and estateplanning for a dozen powerful men."(King, p.67-68), which seems like a job more suitable for a former accountant than a judicial expert. A possible explanation for Mr. Němeček’s translation can be found in the online translator at Seznam.cz, which 13

translates "certified accountant" as "autorizovaný auditor/účetní znalec"14, however these are both terms used only in British English, and since Stephen King (and more importantly Howard Fornoy) is an American, it can be safely assumed, that my translation is probably the correct one.

4.2. On the verge of destroying human intellect And so it was, at least until the day Bobby showed up unexpectedly (in the best madscientist tradition) with his two glass boxes, a bees' nest in one and a wasps' nest in the other, Bobby wearing a Mumford Phys Ed tee-shirt inside-out, on the verge of destroying human intellect and just as happy as a clam at high tide. His translation seems to indicate that Robert Fornoy’s own intelect was on the verge of destruction, but if the reader reads further, it becomes obvious, that that is not the case. What we deal with here, is an example of Stephen King’s trademark ominous foreshadowing of events that are yet to come. Mr. King is obviously referring here to Bobby’s invention called "The Calmative", which will be responsible for the destruction of human intelect.

4.3. American Flyer I went out to the garage where there was this weird plywood contraption sitting on his American Flyer red wagon. (King, p. 72) Šel jsem s ním do garáţe, kde na jeho červeném kočárku spočíval podivný překliţkový vynález. (King, p. 64, translated by Ivan Němeček) „Šel jsem s ním do garáţe, kde byl jeho červený vozík American Flyer, na kterém byla přidělaná podivná konstrukce z překliţky.― (Ondřej Kazda) This may seem like nitpicking, but American Flyer is a brand which makes wagons, not baby carriages.15 On the other hand, Mr. Němeček’s translation of this whole sentence is much better from the syntactical point of view, and sounds more "Czech" than my own, rather clumsy translation.

4.4. Whooping He went freewheeling down the hill, whooping like a cowboy just off a traildrive and headed into town for a few cold beers.(King, p. 73) Rozjel se z kopce a poskakoval jako kovboj, který přihnal krávy a teď jede do města na pár studených piv. (King, p. 64-65; translated by Ivan Němeček) „Rozjel se dolů z kopce a výskal přitom jako kovboj vracející se z nahánění dobytka a mířící do města na pár vychlazených piv.― (Ondřej Kazda) In this instance, there is a mistakenly translated word "whooping" in Ivan Němeček’s text. Interestingly enough, when later on Mr. King writes: "He went gliding over Grant Park on a steepening upward plane, whooping cheerily. " (King, p. 73), Mr. Němeček correctly translates it as: "Vznášel se nad Grantovým parkem a vesele halekal. ". (King, p. 65; translated by Ivan Němeček)

4.5. The Philippines incident The year we tried to blockade the Philippines after the Cedeño administration accepted a 'small group' of Red Chinese advisors (fifteen thousand or so, according to our spy satellites), and only backed down when it became clear that (a) the Chinese weren't kidding about emptying the holes if we didn't pull back, and (b) the American people weren't all that crazy about committing mass suicide over the Philippine Islands. (King, p. 67; translated by Ivan Němeček) „V roce, kdy jsme se pokusili uzavřít blokádu Filipín, poté co Cedeňova administrativa přijala „malou skupinu― poradců z komunistické Číny (zhruba patnáct tisíc, podle našich špionáţních satelitů), a ustoupili jsme teprve tehdy, kdyţ se ukázalo, ţe a) Číňané by neváhali s odpálením raket, pokud se nestáhneme a b) Američané se nijak nehrnuli do spáchání masové sebevraţdy jen kvůli filipínským ostrovům.― (Ondřej Kazda) From a syntactical point of view this is a rather difficult sentence, and I am still not entirely sure, which translation is correct – mine or Mr. Němeček’s. His point of view is understandable – from the sentence it is not entirely clear, who is the party, which "backed down". In Mr. Němeček’s translation, it seems to be the Cedeño administration, however, upon reading the entire sentence, that does not make a whole lot of sense. My translation (which may very well be incorrect) paints the situation in a different light. The way I understood it, it was the Americans, who had to back down, since as Stephen King writes, the Chinese were not afraid to use (probably nuclear) weapons, and the Americans did not want to risk a conflict on a

global scale over the Philippine Islands. Whichever translation is correct, at the very least there seems to be a mistake in Mr. Němeček’s translation of "the American people weren't all that crazy about committing mass suicide over the Philippine Islands." He translates it as "Američané nejsou tak šílení, aby na Filipínách páchali hromadné sebevraţdy.". Once again, the key here is in the proper understanding of the context. True, there was a danger of a global conflict over Phillipines, but as Stephen King writes it, this conflict would probably not take place on the Philippine Island themselves, but rather on a Chinese and American soil. That war would probably be nuclear, and as such would result in millions of deaths on both American and Chinese side. The mass suicide Stephen King is referring to here, is not a literal suicide, but rather a metonymy.

4.6. Someone better 'Why are they so mean?' I asked. 'I'm supposed to answer that?' 'Someone better,' he said. 'Pretty soon, too, the way things are going.' (King, p. 76) „Proč jsou tak zlí?― zeptal jsem se. „A na to ti mám odpovědět?― „Přijde někdo lepší,“ rozumoval. „A to velice brzy, podle toho, jak se to vyvíjí.― (King, p. 67; translated by Ivan Němeček) „Proč jsou na sebe lidi zlí?― opáčil jsem. „Na to mám jako odpovědět?― „Někdo by to udělat měl,“ řekl Bobby. „A co nejdřív, vzhledem k tomu, jak se věci mají.― (Ondřej Kazda) In this instance, Mr. Němeček has probably misunderstood, what Bobby meant to say, an as such, his translation makes no sense at all. He makes it seem like Bobby believes, that some better person is comming, because of the dire situation around the world. That is a wrong iterpretation of King’s text. What Bobby is actually saying is that someone had better answer his question before it is to late, and the world becomes engulfed in a nuclear conflict.

4.7. The whole mess, my back teeth are floating 'Nope,' Bobby said. 'War. Barroom brawls. Drive-by shootings. The whole mess. Where's your bathroom, Howie? My back teeth are floating.' For me, there are two problems with this section of Mr. Němeček’s translation. The first one is really just a minor gripe; it is connected to the title of the short story – The End of the Whole Mess(In Ivan Němeček’s translation it is called Konec celé patálie; I translated it as Konec všech problémů). This setence marks the first time, when the titular "whole mess" is mentioned, and yet Mr. Němeček vaguely translates it as "tyhlety věci", which feels like a missed opportunity. The second (and more serious) problem is connected with the wrong translation of the idiomatic expression "my back teeth are floating". It does not mean, as Mr. Němeček suggests, that Bobby is sick to his stomach, but rather that he has a strong need to urinate.16

4.8. Art forgery 'Writin anything good, Bow-Wow?' he asked casually, and I felt the hair stiffen on the back of my neck. When was the last time he'd called me Bow-Wow? When he was four? Six? Shit, man, I don't know. He was working carefully on his left hand with the tweezers. I saw him extract a tiny something that looked like a nostril hair and place it in my ashtray. 'Piece on art forgery for Vanity Fair,' I said. 'Bobby, what in hell are you up to this time?' (King, p. 81)

Fornoy himself is not forging anything; the art forgery is simply the focus of his text. This same mistake is repeated two pages later: "In that period, he read my piece on art forgery… although it was already twenty pages long." (King, p. 83)

"Get pissed" here means "get angry", but once again, Mr. Němeček inexplicably decided to approach the whole situation literally and in his translation we deal with a farmer who urinated on a pig, before giving it some sort of salt water injection. In reality, even after the flimsiest of research, it becomes clear that "rock-salt" is actually a type of shotgun ammunition. According to English Wikipedia: "Rock salt shells are hand loaded with coarse rock salt crystals, replacing the standard lead or steel shot. Rock salt shells could be seen as the forerunners of modern less-lethal rounds. In the United States, rock salt shells

were and are sometimes still used by rural civilians to defend their property. The brittle salt was unlikely to cause serious injury at long ranges, but would cause painful stinging injuries and served as a warning."17

4.10 The police officers in La Plata 'Put those two guys in a Pennsylvania town similar to La Plata in every way but the geographical,' Bobby said, 'and they would have been out on their asses fifteen years ago. But in La Plata, they're gonna go on until they die…which they'll probably do in their sleep.' (King, p. 87) „Kdybys přesadil ty dva chlápky do kteréhokoliv pensylvánského městečka podobného La Platě ve všem kromě geografické polohy,― řekl Bobby, „je už patnáct let po nich. In this part of the short story Robert Fornoy speculates that in any other town, the incompetent sheriff and his deputy would have been fired by now. Fired, not dead. With this information it becomes clear, that by "go on" Fornoy means "continue working" rather than "continue living".

4.11. Conclusion These are the most dramatic differences I encountered when comparing my and Mr. Němeček’s translation. There were many other little differences (mainly in the last few pages, since they required much more liberal approach to translating), but they were not mistakes per se, so I decided not to include them. To conclude this part, I would like to emphasize, that I am in no way implying that my translation is perfect. Far from it, in fact. There are many instances and occasions where Mr. Němeček’s translation sounds much better and much more „Czech― than mine. I also prefer his translation of the title of the short story – Konec celé patálie sound much more intriguing to me than Konec všech problémů. However, it was surprising to find this many translating mistakes in a book as high-profile as this one.

5.The analysis of my own translation 5.1. Proper names, geographical names Vlastní jméno moţno přeloţit, pokud má hodnotu jen významovou. […] Kdyţ se význam ztratí úplně, pak je moţný jen přepis, tj. zachování jména v cizím znění. (Levý, p. 116) Exotismus, tj. vlastně převzetí slova z výchozího jazyka buď beze změny nebo přizpůsobeně cílové výslovnosti či pravopisu. (Knittlová, p. 28) Jestliţe ekvivalent v Cj neexistuje, je třeba řešit případy tzv. nulové ekvivalence či bezekvivalentní lexiky. (Knittlová, p. 84) K převzetí dochází především u jmen a zeměpisných názvů. (Knittlová, p. 85) There are several instances in the short story, where a translation of a proper or geographical name was required to ensure a complete understanding from the side of the reader. In this section I will go through them one by one. 5.1.1. The White Mountains, Valley Forge Now there's just the White Mountains, looking like dark triangles of crepe paper cut out by a child, and the pointless stars.(King, p. 68)

„Teď uţ tam jsou jen Bílé hory, připomínající temné trojúhelníky, které vystřihlo nějaké dítě z krepového papíru, a bezúčelné hvězdy.― I decided to translate the name of the mountains, because I do not think that I have ever encountered an instance where the name of the mountains would be left untranslated. If I wanted to keep the name of the mountains in English, I would be left with three options – either "Teď uţ tam jsou jen White Mountains" or "Teď uţ tam jsou jen Bílé Mountains" or even "Teď uţ tam jsou jen White hory". Of these three obviously only the first option is even remotely possible, however the sentence does not sound natural to me, and for that reason I decided to translate the name. Furthermore there is a sentence later on in the text, which would sound even more unnatural, if it the name of the mountains was left untranslated: 81

…he combed the White Mountain foothills around our summer place in North Conway, building a history of the Indians who had lived there from arrowheads, flints, even the charcoal patterns of long-dead campfires in the mesolithic caves in the mid-New Hampshire regions. (King, p. 75) I also followed the same rule, when I traslated Valley Forge as "údolí Forge" (after checking that there really is such a place, and that it actually is a valley).18 I also wrote well early, with no effort at all. I sold my first magazine piece when I was twenty — it was on how the Continental Army wintered at Valley Forge. (King, p. 69) „Od mala mi také šlo psaní. Svůj první článek jsem prodal, kdyţ mi bylo dvacet – o tom, jak Kontinentální armáda přezimovala v údolí Forge.―

5.1.2. Carrigan’s Hill, DC, Grant Park He wanted me to push him down Carrigan's Hill, which was the steepest grade in DC's Grant Park — there was a cement path down the middle of it for old folks.(King, p. 72) „Chtěl, abych ho strčil z Carriganova vrchu, coţ byl nejstrmější kopec ve Washingtonském Grant Parku – jeho středem vedla betonová cesta pro důchodce.― In this sentence there are, in fact three geographical names. The first is Carrigan’s Hill, which I decided to translate, because this type of geographical names is very common even in the Czech Republic (Sládkův kopec, Karlův most etc.). There was also another reason why I decided to translate the name – the fact that Carrigan’s Hill is actually a hill is very important for the story. Ultimately I settled on the translation "Carriganův vrch" because I did not want to use the word "kopec" twice in the sentence. The second geographical name in the sentence is DC, which stands for Washington DC. Here I decided to switch the shorthand DC (used by Stephen King) for the (in 18

the Czech Republic much more known) Washington, so as to avoid any confusion on the reader’s part. The final translation I want to focus on is Grant Park. I decided to leave it as an original an untranslated name, because the word "park" has the same meaning in both Czech and English, and also because the names of parks are often untranslated in Czech (Hyde Park, Central Park)

5.1.3. Bow-Wow 'Writin anything good, Bow-Wow?' he asked casually, and I felt the hair stiffen on the back of my neck. (King, p. 81) „Co teď vůbec píšeš, Hafíku?― zeptal se mě nenuceně, a já náhle cítil, jak se mi na zátylku jeţí vlasy.― This was a translation that I struggled with for quite some time. Bow-Wow is Howard Fornoy’s nickname and for a long time I did not understand what exactly does it mean. I believe that the nickname is a wordplay of sorts – the first syllable of Howard’s name – "How" – sounds the same as "Bow". The way I see it, this is what Robert Fornoy used to call his big brother, when he was to young to pronounce his name correctly. That much I understand. But I had no idea how to translate it to Czech and not make it sound completely nonsensical. To make matters even more complicated, I also did not know if "Bow-Wow" actually means something or if it is supposed to be just a childish blabbering. Finally I found out that Bow-Wow can mean (amongst other things) either "the bark of a dog" or even "a dog".19 Then it was just a matter of deciding, how exactly should I translate it. For some time I thought about translating it as "Pejsek" (which is actually Mr. Němeček’s translation) but ultimately I decided that the more literal translation is, at least in this case, the better one, because "Hafík" is phonetically much closer to "Howard".

5.1.4. Moho "The aquifer under that area of Texas is deep but amazingly large; it's like this incredible Lake Victoria driven into the porous sediment which overlays the Moho." (King, p. 88) „Akvifer pod touhle oblastí Texasu je hluboký, ale neuvěřitelně rozlehlý; jako kdybys přenesl Viktoriino jezero do porézní půdy, která překrývá Mohorovičićovu vrstvu.― The translation of Lake Victoria as "Viktoriino jezero" probably does not need any explanation; it is simply a commonly used Czech translation. What I would like to focus here is "the Moho". Since I am no geology expert, I was not sure what it is, and had to find the meaning on the internet. On the Czech Wikipedia I discovered that while the abbreviation "MOHO" (all capitals in Czech) is possible, the full name "Mohorovičićova vrstva" is more common.20 I also decided to translate it in full because the word "vrstva" offers at least some basic notion of what it might be. If I translated it as „Akvifer pod touhle oblastí Texasu je hluboký, ale neuvěřitelně rozlehlý; jako kdybys přenesl Viktoriino jezero do porézní půdy, která překrývá MOHO―, it would be much more confusing. 5.1.5. Duke Rogers "But Duke Rogers says it's really the biggest time-bomb on earth…and it's wired to go off by October of next year." (King, p. 89) „Ale Vévoda Rogers tvrdí, ţe ve skutečnosti je to ta největší časovaná bomba na zemi…a ţe má vybuchnout nejpozději do příštího října.― Mr. Němeček does not translate the word "Duke" which would suggest that the person in question is actually named "Duke". However, later in the text Stephen King writes: "Duke Rogers was actually John Paul Rogers, the geology professor.". That, at least to me, clearly indicates that "Duke" is actually just a nickname and it is not that uncommon. John Wayne, one of the most famous American actors, was nicknamed Duke. Howard Perkins, another character in one of King’s more recent

novels is also nicknamed Duke. It is the latter example that I found more important, because in that book (Under the Dome) the nickname was translated into Czech and I decided to do it the same way in my translation.

5.2. Measures Právě vědomí národní specifičnosti odlišuje problematiku při překládání měr a vah od překládání měny. Nezvyklé měrné systémy např. ruský a anglický, často nahrazujeme naší metrickou soustavou. (Levý, p. 124) Substituce analogií skutečnosti a zkušeností z oblasti Cj. Tento způsob je nejčastější. Nejběţnější je v oblasti měrných jednotek, které se v únosných mezích přepočítávají tak, aby nenarušily ráz uměleckého textu a přitom dostatečně informovaly našeho adresáta. (Knittlová, p. 82) In accordance to what both Mr. Levý and Mrs. Knittlová write, I decided to change miles, feets, inches, gallons and other measures to their Czech equivalents, because I do not think that the majority of Czech readers are well-acquainted with the American measure system. To make sure I do not make a mathematical mistake, I used a specialised website to help me with the transferring. Obviously I did not use the precise equivalents, because the results were not even numbers, and I though that would look odd in the translation, so I had to round them up or down a bit.

5.2.1. Examples All of a sudden Bobby was ten feet in the air, then twenty, then fifty. (King, p. 73) „Najednou byl Bobby tři metry ve vzduchu, pak šest, a pak patnáct.― He went air-sliding five feet over it, then four… and then he was skiing his sneakers along the surface of the water, sending back twin white wakes. (King, p. 74) „Snesl se půldruhého metru nad hladinu, pak metr…a pak uţ teniskami čeřil vodní hladinu, nechávaje za sebou dvě bílé brázdy.―

He came back five months later with the first real tan of his life; he was also an inch taller, fifteen pounds lighter, and much quieter. (King, p. 76) „Vrátil se o pět měsíců později. Poprvé v ţivotě byl opálený. Vytáhl se o nějaké tři centimetry a zhubnul sedm kilo. Také byl zamlklejší.― "It came from an artesian well in La Plata, a little town forty miles east of Waco, and before I turned it into this concentrated form, there were five gallons of it." (King, p. 78) „Pochází to z artézské studny v La Platě. To je malé městečko asi šedesát kilometrů od Waca. Neţ jsem vyrobil tenhle koncentrát, bylo toho skoro dvacet litrů.― "We've got damn near six thousand gallons now, in these big steel tanks. By the end of the year, we'll have fourteen thousand. By next June we'll have thirty thousand." (King, p. 88) „Teď uţ toho máme přes dvacet tisíc litrů. Na konci roku to bude víc neţ padesát tisíc. Do příštího července budeme mít sto deset tisíc litrů.―

5.3. Currency Převádět cizí měnu není moţné, protoţe měna je charakteristická vţdy pro určitou zemi a koruny by nám lokalizovaly překlad do našeho prostředí. (Levý, p. 124) In accordance to what Jiří Levý writes, I decided not to change the US dollars into Czech crowns. It would be overly complicated to transfer the sums of money from one currency to another (in addition to the fact that, in order to be precise, I would have to find the correct exchange rate from 1986, when the story was written). I also think that it would be distracting for the reader, to read a story set firmly in the USA and at the same time have the characters use Czech currency.

I also wrote well early, with no effort at all. I sold my first magazine piece when I was twenty — it was on how the Continental Army wintered at Valley Forge. I sold it to an airline magazine for four hundred fifty dollars. (King, p. 69) „Od mala mi také šlo psaní. Svůj první článek jsem prodal, kdyţ mi bylo dvacet – o tom, jak Kontinentální armáda přezimovala v Údolí Forge. Prodal jsem ho za čtyři sta padesát dolarů do jednoho z těch časopisů, co dostanete v letadle.― My dad, who was less than happy about all this, ended up paying a seventy-fivedollar FCC fine and taking it out of Bobby's allowance for the next year. (King, p. 75) „Táta z toho velkou radost neměl. Musel zaplatit Úřadu pro komunikace pokutu sedmdesát pět dolarů, kterou po následující rok strhával Bobbymu z kapesného.―

5.4. School grades I am not entirely sure, whether school grades mark as units of measurement, but I decided to change the American letter scale (A, B, C, D, E, F) to our numeral scale, because while the letter scale is used at some (but not all) universities, it is not used at Czech primary and secondary school and as such, its use in the translation could be confusing for the reader. I maintained A's and B's through my school career (the idea that either I or my brother might go to a private school was never even discussed so far as I know). (King, p. 69) „Po celou svou školní docházku jsem si udrţoval jedničky a dvojky (o tom, ţe bychom já nebo můj bratr šli studovat na soukromou školu se, pokud vím, vůbec neuvaţovalo).―

5.5. Explanatory words Ideálem je dosáhnout srozumitelnosti významové a přitom zároveň navodit představu cizího prostředí. (Levý, p. 119) Dochází k přidávání informací, k pouţívání explicativního řešení tam, kde by sdělení bylo našim čtenářům nesrozumitelné, a naopak k vypouštění informací, které by náš čtenář povaţoval za redundantní. Někdy nezbytná vnitřní vysvětlivka mívá formu vysvětlujícího opisu, který by však měl být co nejstručnější, aby nedošlo k nadměrnému rozšiřování textu a zatěţování nominálními prvky, které jsou většinou nositeli přídatných informací. (Knittlová, p. 81)

Zejména v případech našemu čtenáři neznámých názvů, přidávají překladatelé obecný klasifikátor, který název zařadí do příslušné pojmové oblasti. (Knittlová, p. 82)

5.5.1. Drew, Phi Beta Kappa Mom graduated magna cum laude from Drew. Got a Phi Beta Kappa key she sometimes wore on this funky fedora she had. (King, p. 68) „Máma graduovala magna cum laude na Drewské univerzitě. Měla odznak ze studentského spolku Pí Beta Kappa, který občas nosila na svém excentrickém klobouku.― Even though the readers could probably guess from the context, that Drew is an university, I decided to add the word "univerzita" to really drive this point home. I also felt the need to explain that Phi Beta Kappa is a student honor society, because otherwise that information might be lost on the reader.21

5.5.2. Zenith, WBOB One old black-and-white Zenith, twelve feet of hi-fi flex, a coathanger mounted on the roofpeak of our house, and presto! For about two hours four blocks of Georgetown could receive only WBOB. (King, p. 75) „Jedna stará černobílá televize značky Zenith, čtyři metry kabelu, ramínko na oblečení připevněné na střechu našeho domu a tradá! Příští dvě hodiny mohli obyvatelé čtyř bloků v Georgetownu naladit pouze stanici WBOB.― Both of the marked changes in this part of the traslation were once again made to ensure the text is easy to understand for everybody.

5.5.3. Charlie Brown and the football He was Lucy holding the football and promising me this time for sure, and I was Charlie Brown, rushing down the field to kick it. (King, p. 79) „Byl jako Lucy, drţící fotbalový míč, a slibující mi, ţe tentokrát uţ určitě neuhne, a já byl Charlie Brown, a běţel jsem k ní, připravený kopnout.― This sentence requires the reader to have the sort of cultural background most readers in the Czech republic simply do not have. Charlie Brown and Lucy van Pelt are characters in Charles M. Schultz’s comic strip called Peanuts and the animated TV specials and movies based on it.22 According to the english Wikipedia: "Lucy frequently pulls the football away from Charlie Brown right as he is about to kick it. The first occasion on which she did this was November 16, 1952 (Violet unintentionally did the same thing a year before because she was afraid Charlie Brown would accidentally kick her), but unlike subsequent stunts, Lucy first pulled the ball away because she did not want Charlie Brown to get it dirty (he took a second try in the same strip, only to trip over it at the end). became an annual tradition, and Schulz did one every year for the rest of the strip's run."23 Stephen King writes his stories with the American readers in mind, and therefore he does not need to clarify, what exactly is Lucy promising to Charlie Brown (because the Peanuts comic strip was extremely popular and ran for 50 years in the USA24). However, the Czech reader probably is not familiar with the series and for that reason I decided to make Lucy’s intentions clearer by adding the word "neuhne".

5.4. Substitution of an analogy His only deputy was his nephew. Bobby told me the nephew looked quite a lot like Junior Samples on the old Hee-Haw show. (King, p. 86-87) „Jeho jediný podřízený byl jeho synovec, který, jak mi Bobby tvrdil, vypadal přesně jako Junior Samples z té staré televizní estrády.― I do not think anyone in Czech republic would be familiar with a rather obscure American TV show which ran mainly in the 1970s25, so I decided to replace the name Hee-Haw with a more general translation „televizní estráda―.

6. Summary While it took me much longer than I originally thought, I immensely enjoyed translating The End of the Whole Mess. Although I have had some experience with translating many TV shows or movies before, translating an actual book (or a part of a book, to be precise) has made me think about the English languge in a whole another way. To sum up my bachelor thesis: its first part is focused on the actual translation (where I drew from the linguistic theories by Dagmar Knittlová and Jiří Levý), and the second part is an analysis of various linguistic problems and curiosities that I have encountered while translating. This was an enormously fulfilling experience for me, and I would like to conclude this text by once again thanking Mgr. Martin Němec for his helpful tips and guidance.
