1. Introduction

Being a fan of Stephen King’s work, I have always wanted to translate one of his books. I chose Lisey's Story not because it was my favourite book but for a great challenge it represents to a translator.

In my bachelor thesis, I decided to deal with unconventional language used in the book a great deal. Stephen King is said to be a master of words and he revels in using dialects; he even creates his own words, deforms language and expresses himself as multifariously as possible.

Unconventional language is used in fiction quite often nowadays as every author wants to be original. Such a language creates a special atmosphere and also has an aesthetic function in the text. However, the translation of unconventional language is very difficult.

„Jazykové prostředky dvou jazyků nejsou „ekvivalentní“, a proto nelze převádět mechanicky. Nekryjí se přesně významy a jejich estetické hodnoty. Proto je překlad tím obtížnější, čím větší je úloha jazyka v umělecké výstavbě textu.“ (Levý 1998: 67)

My thesis consists of two parts, practical and theoretical. The practical part consists of the translation of chosen chapters of the book Lisey’s story. The theoretical part deals with unconventional language, namely, intentional errors, foreign language, dialect, corruption of language (baby talk and family language) and puns. I also compared my translation with a Czech translation by Linda Bartošková and German translation by Wulf Bergner.

2. About Stephen King

Stephen King is a world-famous author of horror, fantasy and science fiction. He has written more than 40 novels and almost twice as many short stories. He is also an author of quite a number of novellas, novelettes, screenplays and textbooks. Many of his books were adapted for movies and he has won numerous awards for his works. Stephen Erwin King was born in Portland, Maine on 21st September in 1947. He studied at the University of Maine at Orono where he wrote for the school newspaper and took an active part in student politics. He graduated in 1970, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and with a qualification to teach on a high school level.

‘The Glass Floor’ which appeared in Startling Mystery Stories in 1967, was his first published short story. He sold many of such stories to men’s magazine and quite a few of these were later published as the ‘Night Shift’ collection.

His first published book was Carrie. It was an enormous success later made into a movie that as popular as the book. Ironically, it was saved by his wife Tabitha from being thrown away. After this, Salem’s Lot (1975), The Shining (1977) and The Stand (1978) followed.1

He has also written 7 novels under the pen name Richard Bachmann – Rage (1977), The Long Walk (1979), Roadwork (1981), The Running Man (1982), Thinner (1984), The Regulators (1996) and Blaze (2007). His fans and horror fiction experts recognized them as his work because of the style and some references he made to his own person.

For his books, he is both criticized and praised. He takes pleasure in playing with various dialects some of which are his own, untraditional forms of language and neologisms. Not everyone, of course, considers this particular style interesting. Some of his works are connected through places, characters and hints of events in his other books.2

4. Theoretical part

4.1 Foreign language in the text “Cizí jazyky pomáhají navodit atmosféru cizokrajného prostředí, zdůraznit národní, sociální osobitost postav; mají významnou funkci charakterizační, mohou zvýšit dojem autentičnosti textu či se stát zdrojem zápletky, slovní hříčky. Lze jimi vyjádřit autorovu zálibu v hledání netradičních forem pojmenování, jeho duchaplnost, vtip.” (Hrdlička 2003: 106)

It is not easy to deal with translation of foreign language. As Levý suggests: „Nahradí-li se cizí jazyk prostě normální češtinou, ztratí svou charakterizační hodnotu.“ (1998: 126) Knittlová suggests that it is essential for the translator to know what the function of the foreign language in the text is. If greetings, addressing, thanks etc. are used in foreign language, they preserve the original form as they indicate the nationality of the character and most of the time are comprehensible. The same solution also applies to words or expressions, the meaning of which can be guessed at, understood or figured out from the context. (2000: 114)

All the foreign language elements I came across in the book consist of short expressions. I believe that it is not necessary to translate the foreign language in these cases as I presume it was usually used to enrich the text with the exception of the German language that has a characteristic function here. Lisey and her husband lived in Germany and the use of German expressions relates to the period of time they spent there.

For German readers, the text does not have the foreign language elements in parts where German language is used. The translator only pointed out once that words in the original text were German.

4.2 Intentional orthographic and grammatical errors Orthographic and grammatical errors can have characteristic, humorous or satirical functions in the text. When translating, it is necessary to translate them into the target language appropriately.

Certain rules should be obeyed for translation of such mistakes: (Hrdlička 2003:102)

1. the certain mistake must serve the same purpose in the translated text; 2. similar frequency of mistakes must be preserved in the translated text; 3. the same kind of mistake should be preserved in the translated work; if it is not possible, it should be replaced by a similar incorrect linguistic phenomenon.

I had to deal with two kinds of intentional errors. The first concerns typing errors, which present no difficulty for the translator since it is not complicated to switch two letters in a word. The second is represented by grammatical mistakes. Hrdlička gives examples especially of intentional orthographic and grammatical mistakes in the written form. However, all the grammatical mistakes in my text occurred in the spoken form.

Both Bartošková and Bergner ignored the grammatical mistakes in the original text. They just phrased the sentences in a different way. I do not consider this a good solution as the errors have a certain function in the text. They are there to show the character’s lack of education and since not a single mistake is suggested and nothing unusual used, the character is, in my opinion, deprived of an important characteristic feature. I was unable to find a solution that would fully correspond to the original phenomenon but I did not want to leave it out either. As Knittlová says: „Nevyjádřitelnost je nutno kompenzovat, protože v překladu by se žádná hodnota neměla ztratit, pouze jedna forma se přelévá v druhou.” (2000: 106) That is why I used nonstandard language and let the character unsuccessfully correct his nonstandard language into standard language.

There cannot be two negatives in one sentence in German or in English so the translator could preserve the same mistake. The same solution, however, cannot be used in Czech. Bartošková did not indicate any error again. She only added words that could logically follow. I resorted to making a little change in the text and used the mistake in a different part of the utterance. I preserved the same type of mistake although, in this case, the character corrects it.

4.3 Translation of dialect A dialect is a variety of a language that is characteristic of a particular group of the language's speakers. It is distinguished by its vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.3

In fiction, dialects are used to make the character prominent, he can represent people with lower education or emphasize a negative character.

Furthermore, Kufnerová says that if the dialect is unimportant in the text, the standard language should be used to translate it. (1994: 69) However, in most cases authors use the dialect for a reason; therefore, the dialect usually has a significant function in the text. In order to keep the author's intention, the translator must find an appropriate solution to transfer the dialect into the target language. There are many ways how to proceed when translating dialects.

My inclination would be to use a method suggested by Zlata Kufnerová:

„Řešení problému nářečních prvků v soudobém uměleckém překladu se stále více blíží útvaru, jehož základem v rovině zvukové a tvarové je obecná čeština v různé míře a v různých rovinách ozvláštněná regionálními dialektismy, jež z hlediska lokalizace a charakterizace nepůsobí nijak rušivě“. (1994: 70)

Dialects of various parts of the country differ and, therefore, it should be apparent in translations as well. To clarify this for readers, it would make sense then to differentiate ways of expressing the dialects.

To distinguish between the dialects, I used typical features of non-standard language combined with some elements of Czech and Moravian dialects. Typical features of non-standard Czech4 I used are: -

phonic changes of ‘ý’ into ‘ej’ (e.g. ‘jedinej’ instead of ‘jediný’, ‘netejká’ instead of ‘netýká’)

phonic changes of ‘é’ into ‘ý’ (e.g. ‘tý’ instead of ‘té’)

omission of a syllabic ‘l’ (e.g. ‘řek’ instead of ‘řekl’)

The first dialect the reader comes across is quite extraordinary since Mr. Dashmiel speaks in a way the reader can barely understand. The words in the dialect were unclear to me until Lisey interpreted them. She called his dialect Dasmiel-ese (‘Dashmielština’) and I thought that the graphic side should remain similar to the target language. Therefore, when readers encounter it for the first time, they should not comprehend it either.

When translating Mr. Dooley’s expressions, I used a non-standard language in combination with elements of Moravian dialect (e.g. sme, nevim, etc.) and so did Bartošková. Bergner left the original ‘Missus’ in the text, although it is not a German addressing. He could, in my opinion, try to find a German equivalent. The two negatives in a sentence in the second example could have been easily preserved in German translation but he did not do so. Having such a possibility, he should have made a use of it. It is Dooley’s typical mistake and, if possible, it should be preserved in the translation.

4.3.3 Dialect of Maine

The last dialect I want to deal with is a Maine dialect. The state of Maine is a frequent location of King's stories and his characters use this dialect very often.

Bartošková translated ‘ayuh’ into ‘jo’. She used the word ‘jo’ in all cases even though a different expression would have been more appropriate. The effect is not the same to Czech readers as ‘ayuh’ is to Americans. The Czech word ‘jo’ is commonly used while ‘ayuh’ is a Yankee dialect not common to all Americans. An expression used by Scott meaning perfectly huge also represents a dialect of Maine. The most difficult thing was to find a meaning of this expression. As far as I am concerned, once the meaning is clear, it does not present a problem. The translator chooses a form which he likes and which best corresponds to the meaning.

I translated it as ‘totálka obrácký’ using non-standard language in order to capture the exceptional look of the expression. Bergner translated it as ‘schaurig rihiesig’. ‘Schaurig’ means ‘terribly’ and ‘rihiesig’ was created from the word ‘riesig’ which means ‘huge’. The syllable was probably added to the word to emphasize the hugeness.

Bartošková’s translation ‘ha-rozně supr’ does not have the same meaning as the original one. I do not understand either her reason for dividing the word and or what it stands for.

In this chapter, I deal with a corruption of language such as baby talk and family language. One has to play with words a little bit to get the true meaning and achieve the appropriate graphical side of the language as much as possible. Such corruption of language makes reading more interesting, enjoyable as well as original since one does not find its use in every other book.

4.4.1 Baby talk

When baby talk is used, phonic deformation occurs. According to Kufnerová, phonic deformation can appear in two forms – metathesis8 (e.g. kolomotiva instead of lokomotiva) and substitution of voiced and unvoiced sounds (e.g. žekl instead of řekl). 4.4.2 Family language

Family language is characterized by a lexical corruption, in which case neologisms are created. The unique and somewhat special language, used only by a certain group of people, presents a difficulty to the translator as he must figure out what the expressions mean and decide how to handle them.

In the book, there is a paragraph in which the reader finds out that Lisey and Scott came up with their own intimate language – words or expressions they made up or modified a bit. The most frequently used expressions are mentioned in the paragraph below and the reader encounters them quite often throughout the whole book. I will analyze the translation of the expressions individually.

4.4.2.1 SOWISA

SOWISA is a neologism called acronym standing for ‘Strap On Whenever It Seems Appropriate’, which means ‘get your act together’ or ‘try to do something even if it is hard’9. I substituted the acronym for my own ‘SOVIVOS’, which stands for ‘Seber Odvahu Vždy I V Obtížných Situacích’.

There is another expression connected with SOWISA. Actually, SOWISA is the longer version of ‘strap it on’. The expression ‘strap it on’ means ‘gather your courage’ and I translated it as ‘seber se’ so that it still has some bearing to the acronym SOWISA.

Bartošková used an acronym ‘SESIKO’, which is an abbreviation for ‘SEdlat SI KOně’ and ‘strap it on’ as ‘sedlej koně’. It is a catchy abbreviation that, as far as I am concerned, has little in common with the original phrase.

Bergner used an acronym 'SUWAS' standing for ‘Schnall's Um, Wenn's Angebracht Scheint‘, which literally means ‘do something when it seems appopriate’; and 'strap it on' is translated as ‘es umschnallen’ meaning ‘do something’.

4.4.2.2 Smuck and smucking

Other neologisms occurring in the book are ‘smuck’ and ‘smucking’ substituting ‘fuck’ and ‘fucking’. It was necessary to find a word that would have the same form and meaning as ‘fuck’ does in the source language. I changed the word ‘mrdat’ into ‘majdat’ by which I achieved the same effect as the author. The word ‘majdat’ represents an expression for having sex and ‘vymajdanej’ a swear word so they have the same form and meaning as in the target language.

Bartošková used ‘zasejřenej’ instead of ‘smucking’ and ‘sejřit’ instead of smuck. By this, she managed to find a solution corresponding to the original text.

Bergner came up with the word ‘verschmickt’ to substitute ‘smucking’ and ‘schmicken’ to substitute ‘smuck’. These words are neologisms originating in the word ‘ficken’ that has the same meaning as the word ‘fuck’. Nevertheless, both these expressions are used very rarely in his translation. Usual German swearwords like ‘gottverdammt, verdammt and verflixt’ are used instead of ‘smucking’, which, to me, does not make sense. King used it quite often to show that Lisey and Scott had their own interior language. Bergner came up with his own neologism replacing the expression ‘smuck’. The better solution would be to use it everywhere else where the author did.

In these examples Bergner did not use the expressions he came up with to substitute ‘smuck’ and ‘smucking’. In the first example, he translated ‘smuck it’ as ‘cut it out’ and, in the second example, the word ‘smucking’ is translated as ‘gottverdammt’, which means ‘fucking’.

4.4.2.3 Bool

This word is a neologism, too, and it has appeared in King’s books several times. In this book, it has two completely different meanings. Firstly, it is a game played by Scott and his brother Paul the purpose of which is to follow bools leading you to a treasure. Secondly, it means a surprise and usually not a nice one.

As there is no similar Czech word I decided to apply a method called transcription and changed the English word ‘bool’ into ‘bůl’. There are so many puns connected with this word that it would not be possible to preserve it in its original form.

Bartošková created her own neologism ‘darda’. I had not heard the word before but I found that this word already has a meaning. It means ‘a strong punch’ or ‘a type of card game’10. Thus, for people who know and use this word, it is not a neologism and it gained two other meanings in this book.

Bergner retained the original word ‘bool’. German and English vocabulary is similar, many German words are borrowed from English and that is why he could afford not to translate it. In case of puns, it would not represent a problem.

4.4.2.4 Babyluv

Babyluv is an intimate addressing made up by Stephen King. I do not think it should be translated into a typical addressing like ‘miláčku, lásko, zlato’ etc.; King would use a regular form like ‘love, honey’ etc. Choosing an affectionate addressing like this is a matter of taste and does not represent the biggest problem in translating a family language.

Puns are used very often in literary texts and are claimed to be untranslatable. There is, however, always a solution to things deemed impossible and the translator should try hard and preserve the wordplay in the text.

There are different ways of translating wordplays although such translations are never easy tasks. The following possibilities could be considered in transferring wordplays into a target language11: 11

1. The wordplay and the text referring to the wordplay can be left out. Basically, it depends on the context and also on the purpose of the wordplay. If the wordplay is very important to the text, the omission could have an undesirable effect. In some situations, even if the wordplay is not crucial to the text, it omission could interfere with the atmosphere and the readers could be deprived of something funny or of other elements that are necessary in some genres.

2. The wordplay can be translated directly; however, this is unlikely to happen. Languages differ from each other and one does not often come across a wordplay that could be literally translated into another language with the same outcome.

3. An explanation can be added to the text or footnotes can be used to explain the meaning of a given wordplay. However, a frequent addition of footnotes is not recommended as it can disturb the reader. Adding an explanation would most likely spoil the intended effect as well.

4. The translator can create his own wordplay that would capture the purpose of the original one.

In my opinion, the best way of dealing with wordplays is creating new ones to replace the original ones although this is not always easy and sometimes even impossible.

4.5.1 Plug

The word ‘plug’ has many different meanings but only two of them are of importance in this text – the first meaning is ‘chewing tobacco’ and the second meaning is ‘keep trying’. As we do not have a word that would bear both meanings, the translator has to come up with another way of solving this. It cannot be preserved since it would not be understood by the readers. The translator must substitute it for something that would correspond to the original meaning.

As you can see in the example above, both Bartošková and I came up with different wordplays to substitute the existing one so that the nickname makes sense and has the similar meaning. As for Bergner, not only did he keep the nickname in its original form but he also translated the rest of the text literally. There is no such a word as ‘Plug’ in German language, it is an English word so the wordplay in Bergner’s translation is not clear to German readers.

4.5.2 Lisey’s father’s rhyme

‘One flew north, one flew south, one couldn’t shut her everlasting mouth.’ This was Lisey’s father’s rhyme referring to Amanda.

I translated the rhyme as ‘Jeden ufrnk na sever, druhej na jih a ten její zobák stejně neztich’. The meaning and form of my wordplay are almost identical to the original one.

Bartošková translated it as ‘Jeden čehý, druhý hot, třetí není nikdy nic vhod’. In my opinion, Bartošková’s rhyme may be nice but it does not fully correspond to the original meaning. The original rhyme refers to Lisey’s sister Amanda, who was left by her husband and child. Bartošková’s rhyme does not show this relation clearly.

Bergner translated the word play as ‘Eine flog nach Norden, eine nach Süden übers Land, eine konnt’ nicht halten ihren Lästerrand’. It literally means: ‘One flew north, one flew south through the land, one could not manage not to cross the line’ The meaning corresponds to the original rhyme and the relation to Amanda was also preserved.

4.5.3 Puns with bool

All the puns connected with ‘bool’ are represented by slips of a tongue. I do not find a slip of a tongue difficult to make; however, this was one the reasons I changed the word ‘bool’ into ‘bůl’. It would not be possible to make these slips of a tongue with the original word.

Bartošková used synonyms of the word ‘darda’ instead of slips of a tongue and the last word used is even the word ‘darda’ as she probably did not think of another synonym for it. Bergner preserved words in the original text although two of the words do not have any meanings in German.

4.5.4 Clutterbuck

This subhead deals with a pun connected with the name Clutterbuck. The name consists of two appellatives. As Kufnerová says, word play connected with such names presents an unusual problem. Such names are usually used in a text to evoke a comic effect. (1994: 121) Lisey uses words that rhyme with Deputy Clutterbuck’s name. In my opinion, this is an example of word play that is not possible to translate. This character has appeared in King’s books before and if his name was translated, the readers would not recognize the character. The interconnection between King’s books would be lost.

None of us translated either the name or the wordplay. Bartošková and I left out the comment on Polaroid cameras referring to the word Shutterbug. Without this comment, it could indicate that Lisey could not remember his name, which could look humorously, too. Bergner translated the paragraph literally. The readers do not know the meaning of the word Shutterbug as well as they cannot understand the comment about Polaroid cameras. Therefore, the translation is unclear to them.

5. Conclusion

In my bachelor thesis, I dealt with the unconventional language in a book Lisey’s Story by Stephen King. In the practical part, I translated selected parts of the book. In the theoretical part, I analyzed translation of intentional mistakes, foreign language, dialect, corruption of language (baby talk and family language) and puns. I also compared my translation with Czech and German translation.

In books, I enjoy all the unconventional forms as, to me, they make the story more interesting and readable. However, translating them was sometimes really difficult. The easiest part was the straight translation of foreign language; the expressions are preserved in the original forms to capture the intended atmosphere. I also did not have any difficulty in translating baby talk and family language. Once it is understood what the expression stands for, it is easy to translate it. However, I found the remaining chapters quite demanding. I have not come across a theory dealing with intentional errors in a spoken form so, except from Hrdlička’s rules, I had to rely only on my imagination. I could not be certain that my translation of intentional errors was correct. However, omitting these was out of question; it would not have been a good solution. Dealing with dialects represented another difficulty since it was for the first time I came across more than one dialect in a text. However, once I made up my mind on a method on tackling them, they were fairly easy to deal with. Translating puns was probably the most difficult but, at the same time, the most enjoyable task for me. I like playing with language and I do not like leaving things out in translation. However, I thought the omission was necessary in case of the pun connected with the name Shutterbug. I have not found a solution that would correspond to the original intention, so I had to leave it out.

Generally, I found writing this thesis enjoyable but also challenging. I dealt with things I have not encountered in a translation before. It was not possible to always rely on rules so I had to be creative and no book can teach you how to do that. Comparing my translation with work of other translators made me realize what was done well and what could have been done better.

The whole thing was a very valuable experience to me and I feel more confident in translating now. 62

6. Résumé

My thesis deals with the unconventional language in a book Lisey’s Story by a worldfamous author Stephen King. It consists of two parts, theoretical and practical. In the practical part, selected parts of the book are translated. In the theoretical part, I dealt with translation of intentional orthographic and grammatical mistakes, foreign language, dialect, corruption of language (baby talk and family language) and puns. I also analyzed my translation and compared it with Czech and German translation.

Moje bakalářská práce se zabývá netradičním použitím jazyka v knize Lisey’s Story od světově známého autora Stephena Kinga. Skládá se ze dvou částí, teoretické a praktické. V praktické části jsem přeložila vybrané části z knihy. V teoretické části jsem se zabývala překladem záměrných pravopisných a gramatických chyb, cizího jazyka, dialektu, deformací jazyka (dětskou mluvou a skrytého manželského jazyka) a slovních hříček. Svůj překlad jsem rozebrala a srovnala s českým a německým překladem.
