Deelnemers verzorgen twee praktijkgerichte productpresentaties in PowerPoint.

Vanaf 2005 is in Europa handel in emissierechten (broeikasgassen) mogelijk.

J.H. Baggen E-mail:

Oral presentation
In job advertisements for engineers applicants are always required to possess excellent communication skills. This implies among other things that they should be able to present their designs and research results fluently, for example during meetings with clients or with managers in their own company. A persuasive presentation does not only require thorough preparation of content, but also good style. It takes quite a bit of skill to create a coherent presentation, to come across understandable for any particular audience and to stay in control of the situation. For this purpose the course ‘Oral Presentation’ offers students the possibility to gain experience in giving presentations under professional guidance in a small group.

wm0201TU Technical Writing This course is geared to engineers who need to write technical reports and to scientists who need to write scientific articles. Modern engineers are required to possess excellent communication skills. Not only do they need to know their business, they need to know how to communicate this business to other experts, decision makers and implementers. They need to be able to write accessible technical reports and proposals. The goal of scientific research is publication. Scientists are rarely measured by their knowledge of science; instead they are measured, and become known (or remain unknown) by their publications. Scientific articles need to be well structured to allow for efficient reading. They should also be written in a professional style, convincing, effective and without language errors.

wm0512TU Case study techno-commercial variant Introducing new technology in organizations requires a structural approach to change. This requires a design of balanced changes in the seven organizational aspects: strategy, processes, organizational structure, technology, people, culture, and communication, and their interaction with the external environment. There is a strong emphasis on the role of intellectual property in these processes. Students (individually or in a team of two) will research a subset of these aspects, apply them to a business case, and present the results in an essay. Contact person: dr. wm0516TU Turning Technology into Business This course aims to equip students with a strong conceptual foundation to actively understand the dynamic process of technological. Students will learn how business strategies are best formulated and how (through entrepreneurship) technology can create value. The course consists of six lectures, introducing the theoretical background of a technological, market and business analyses. A unique aspect of this course is that a selection of existing technologies (as developed and patented by the TU Delft) are used as case subjects. The patent project is the focal point of the curriculum. Each group of 4-5 students will be assigned an original patent, and is expected to hand in chapters in the course of curriculum. The patent project should provide a coherent and structured answer to the central question: which strategy is most likely to generate business from this patent? In addition to equipping participants with a thorough knowledge of the course subject, the section Technology, Strategy & Entrepreneurship (TSE) hopes that this course will be the starting point for a variety of university spin-offs in which the students will participate.

International Business Management deals with a number of problems, which an engineering entrepreneur meets when deciding to invest abroad: export and investment barriers, different intellectual property rights regimes, cultural differences, and so on.
wm0522TU Individual Research Assignment
The module International Business Management is part of a package of modules that together qualifies the student for a certificate “Economics and Management”.
The individual research assignment is fully embedded in the research projects of the section Technology, Strategy and Entrepreneurship. Students get a well-defined assignment that is part of the bigger picture which these research projects try to uncover. The emphasis lies on collecting new data and drawing tentative conclusions. Unlike many other courses, this individual research assignment is not merely a finger exercise, but a real contribution to active research.

This class deals with important Law aspects for engineers, mainly of global and European environmental problems. Main topic is the way Law deals with problems like global warming (‘greenhouse effect’), air pollution (ambient air), water pollution etc.. What might be the influence of Law: preventing or decreasing those problems? In this class for international students, there will be 2 lectures on these topics and there will be 2 or 3 assignments.
wm0623TU International Business Management
International students who choose for this class, are kindly requested to contact the lecturer (Mrs. Loes Schutte-Postma) before November 9th.
International business management deals with problems a business meets when exporting and investing abroad. In the 1950s and 1960s most of the firms involved in international markets were big multinational enterprises. In the last two decades of the twentieth century an increasing number of small and medium sized enterprises, so called mini-nationals got involved in international business activities. The growth of e-commerce has also opened up

spm9153 Case studies in Decision Support The course is a survey of the technologies used to support policy decision-making in the public and private sector. The successful implementation of decision support systems requires a combination of analytical models, organizational framework adapted for learning, and effective information technology infrastructure. All three elements - information technology, knowledge-based organizations, and analytical modeling - are therefore considered in the course. A range of decision support applications is considered through out the course. Specific objectives include: • Understanding concepts of the organization as a knowledge-based enterprise; • Recognition of the challenges involved in implementing analytical models within a frame work of institutional decision-making; • Understanding the role and purpose of a variety of data management technologies, including OLAP, relational databases, data warehouses, enterprise software, messaging buses, dynamic business modeling. spm9321 Design of geographic systems for business applications
spm9424 Through-life Engineering and Management of transport and logistics systems
Design of GIS for Business Applications is a fast developing application area that is becoming an integral part of many business organizations. Today many business organizations are introducing a new profile into their business: GIO (Geographic Information Officer), as Internet, mobile services and anywhere anytime information access become an important issue to the business. The main goal of the course is to familiarize students with the important developments in Geographic Information Systems in business applications, their design and application issues within organizational needs and e-business.
This course builds on the content and knowledge of the fundamentals of transport courses, logistics courses and design methodology courses and systems engineering courses. This module will give the students during four lectures in-depth insight in the theoretical background of through-life engineering and management and related topics like: systems & collaborative engineering, life cycle management, logistics engineering and analysis, all in respect to durable transport and logistics systems. During the last four lectures (concentrated in 2-3 days at the end), based on the background of the individual students, cross-functional groups will be formed to fulfil the role of design-teams in a producer-client systems engineering environment. The groups will work together during a sequence of design-phases to make a feasible, functional and affordable conceptual design of a complex transport or logistics system from a life-cycle perspective. Finally the group as a whole will present their work for a committee. We are planning to form the design-teams in respect to a realistic design project together with the industry. Example projects are: a new container terminal, a new airport terminal, a transferium, an innovative urban transport system or a fleet or special purpose ships. The project will be announced during or before the first lecture.

spm9540 Electricity and gas: market design and policy issues
TBM TLO
European gas and electricity markets are in the midst of being liberalized. Due to the specific physical characteristics of electricity and gas, and to the fact that the networks remain natural monopolies, these markets require careful design. This class reviews the design options with respect to issues such as which services can be provided competitively, network access and the role of the system operator. In addition, several current policy issues will be discussed such as security of supply, the CO2 emissions market, integration of European energy markets and privatisation.
