FESTA!
H
6
uváděny jak v liturgickém, tak světském kontextu. Naše pouť od chrámu ke dvoru pokračuje a končí programem zaměřeným na hudební vtip i důvtip a nazvaným Música de Palacio. Španělská Capella de Ministrers představí soubor programových skladeb z 2. poloviny 16. století, takzvaných ensalad Matea Flechy staršího a Bartoloméa Cárcerese. Program belgického tria Laterna Magica s názvem Hausmusik nám dá nahlédnout bohatost hudební nabídky slavnostního soirée konaného v typickém středoevropském salonu, zahrnující skladby W. A. Mozarta, E. Krähmera, A. Diabelliho a G. Rossiniho. Majestátní zakončení festivalu nabízí program určený pro velkolepé dvorské prostředí, konkrétně Versailles Ludvíka XIV. V provedení mezinárodního týmu sestávajícího ze členů tří souborů – Collegium Marianum, Arena Musicale a Les Lunaisiens – zazní Entrée du Roy, tedy Král přichází! FESTA!
I
n Western cultures, when thinking about a feast, we always have some celebration in mind, and traditionally eating, drinking, not-working, commemorating are part of it, but even though feasts may take various forms and styles, they invariably include music, and often also dance. A feast without any music is not festive in our cultural understanding. However, while music is an essential condition for a feast or celebration, not all music is festive. In that sense, it is not always the music in se that is festive, but the occasion or situation in which it is used. A music festival is by definition a celebration, so the question may rise about a music festival, the particular theme of which is “Festa.” It seems redundant, and yet, it is not inevitably so, particularly if we think of the many meanings that related terms as feast, fest, festival, etc., may have in various contexts. The Prague summer early music festival is a musical celebration that focuses on repertoires not traditionally heard in the standard concert halls or opera houses, and is thus already an exceptional event by itself. Through its various events, the festival seeks to address a variety of such festive musical contexts that sometimes have transformed otherwise functional music into celebratory compositions, or that use inherently festive compositions. A first type of feast is represented by a number of liturgical festivities: with its performance of a Marian Mass and Vesper by late 15th-century Burgundian composer Pierre de la Rue, the Belgian ensemble Capilla Flamenca presents just such a Festa Liturgica dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Similarly, the opening concert of the festival, titled On the Wings of the Lion – referring to the lion, symbol of the city of Venice, who spreads its wings across Europe – offers a feast of compositions that could all be inserted as the Proper of a Mass or Vesper service. Religious festivities of the great ancient cultures of Latin America combined music, dance, theatre, and spectacle, and that combination was partly preserved in the music of the Spaniards who settled in these colonies. The music contained in the late 18th-century Peruvian Codex Trujillo, as proposed by the ensemble Música Temprana in its programme Barroco Latinoamericano, offers a feast that is in essence religious, but that Europeans would more typically experience as secular or even folk-like. Such a partial transition into the non-sacred festive realm is also the object of the recital by Doron David Sherwin (cornett) and Barbara Maria Willi (organ), Dulce novumque melos, which offers a variety of 16th- and 17thcentury Italian motets and instrumental pieces that could have been played in both liturgical and courtly contexts. As we continue and complete our expedition from the church to the court, the Capella de Ministrers takes the theme of the Festa to focus on musical wit and humor in a programme (Música de Palacio) of 16th-century ensaladas by Philipp II’s court composers Mateo Flecha the Elder and Bartolomé Cárceres.
8
After the French Revolution, courtly music was banned in many European former courts, and the private bourgeois salon of the Biedermeier period (1815–1848) partly picked up the function of entertaining people with music. In its programme titled Hausmusik the Belgian group Laterna Magica presents a festive soirée in a hypothetical Central-European salon that proposes music from Mozart to E. Krähmer, A. Diabelli and G. Rossini. To conclude the festival in a grand manner, celebratory music in the spectacular courtly environment, this time of Louis XIV’s Versailles, is what the international collaboration between Collegium Marianum, Arena Musicale, and Les Lunaisiens proposes with its Entrée du Roy. This programme represents the epitome of what was experienced as festive and courtly as a conscious vehicle for political propaganda developed by the king and his collaborators. The 2011 edition of Prague’s Summer Festivities of Early Music concludes with an extremely important type of musical Festa, the feast pour raison d’état, or the celebration for purely political purposes through the arts, thus closing a quite complete panorama of the various uses and functions of music in celebratory contexts. Finally, it should also be mentioned that for each of the concerts specific venues have been chosen to optimize the festive aspects of the compositions in spaces and environments perfectly well adapted to the type of music performed, a fundamental aspect that most festivals generally ignore. S
Významnou roli pro šíření Willaertova hudebního vlivu sehrál jistě rozmach tisku not, zahájený v roce 1501 Ottavianem Petruccim. Začátkem 17. století se sakristijní rada u sv. Marka rozhodla povolat do čela benátské cappelly, vykazující opět známky stagnace, dalšího „cizince“, jímž byl tentokrát Claudio Monteverdi pocházející z Cremony.

Ve 20. letech 17. století zaváděl cinkista a houslista Dario Castello “afektivní” výrazové elementy stylu seconda pratica do instrumentálních skladeb, jež nazýval sonate concertate in stil moderno. Bertaliho skladby jsou výsledkem spojení ranější italské tradice v podobě ozvuků Castelly, G. B. Fontany a Marca Uccelliniho s vlivy hudby střední a východní Evropy. T
he arrival of the Flemish composer Adrian Willaert in Venice and his election as Maestro di Cappella of the San Marco basilica in 1527 meant the culmination of the growth of the Venetian musical establishment of the previous years. It was also part of a conscious cultural policy of the Venetian government that aimed at improving the status of the city through public patronage of the arts, in true Renaissance court fashion. In the person of Willaert, the Venetian government finally had a director of music of international renown. In addition to his importance as a composer

of sacred music (Masses, Vesper psalms, motets), Willaert also participated in establishing the madrigal, the villanella, and the instrumental ricercare, which were emulated in Venice and abroad. He and his colleagues were obviously greatly helped by the flourishing business of music printing, which was launched by Ottaviano Petrucci in 1501. Although the Venetian Cappella suffered a few problems again towards the beginning of the 17th century – which the vestry board solved by hiring Claudio Monteverdi, another “foreigner,” though now from Cremona – several organists, but also cornett and sackbut players, violinists and bassoon players, began to distinguish themselves also as composers whose published works quickly spread all over Europe. Venice became one of the most important centers of musical innovation: it is in the San Marco chapel that we find the most elaborate organ ricercari (predecessors of the fugue), motets in concertato style, and instrumental traditional polyphonic canzoni and “modern-style” sonatas. In fact, the whole principle of “concertato” – a practice that combines voices and independent instrumental parts, that opposes small groups of voices and instruments to larger ensembles, and that basically thrives upon the notion of contrast in all musical parameters (tempo, meter, texture, performing forces, etc.) – evolved out of the cori spezzati or dialoguing polychoral pieces that Willaert introduced into Italy from Flanders. In establishing such musical ideas, Willaert and his followers can really be considered to be the composers who set the foundations of Baroque music. The concertato principle is undoubtedly one of the most significant characteristics of Baroque musical style. In tonight’s concert, Musica Fiata not only presents some of the most brilliant examples of this concertato style by Venetian early Baroque composers, but also by musicians who, often trained in San Marco, “spread their wings” and went to work at some of the most Italophile of European courts, in particular Vienna and Dresden, but also in smaller places, such as
15
Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Weißenfels, Breslau, Zeitz and others. Since the winged lion is the symbol of Saint Mark’s, patron saint of Venice, the title of today’s performance fits well the feast of compositions that belong to the Proper of Mass and Vesper services. In addition, the chosen venue for the concert is ideal in that the Ball-Game Hall of the Prague Castle was built as a collaborative effort between the Viennese royal architect Bonifaz Wohlmuth and Ulrico Aostalli from Ticino. Giovanni Gabrieli, organist in San Marco who died just before Monteverdi was elected maestro, was one of the composers who, on the one hand developed the new stile concertato, and on the other published some truly important instrumental music with his canzoni for all the instruments used in the Venetian cappella: cornetts and sackbuts, but also violins, bassoons, and basso continuo usually played by organ and theorbo. Whereas Claudio Monteverdi took the musical qualities of the San Marco chapel to the levels we know with his masses, motets, and psalms, he could not have done so without some great collaborators among composers, singers, and instrumentalists: Alessandro Grandi was one of the star singers in the chapel (before he went to Bergamo in 1617) and contributed to inserting the new vocal styles of the seconda pratica into church music. Similarly, Dario Castello, a cornett and violin player in San Marco introduced the “affective” elements of the vocal seconda pratica style into instrumental music, calling them Sonate concertate in stil moderno in the 1620s. Born in 1605 in Verona, Antonio Bertali joined the Viennese court in 1623 or 1624. In Vienna, and beyond, he was soon to gain a reputation as an excellent violinist. After the death of Giovanni Valentini in 1649 Bertali was appointed Kapellmeister of the court. In his new function he devoted his energy above all to opera. However, it was to his various collections of instrumental music that Bertali owed his immediate posthumous reputation. The great majority of Bertali’s instrumental works is entitled Sonata, and offer the musician and the listener alike an inexhaustible variety of forms, instrumental combinations, compositional techniques, and emotional moods. Whereas the compositions for large ensemble were performed above all at religious services or ceremonies, the works of a smaller scale functioned as music for the court. Being first and foremost a composer of music for the theater, Bertali’s music is endowed with theatrical qualities noticeable in the immense diversity of emotions, or more exactly Affekte, in each of the many contrasting sections of his sonatas. Bertali’s compositions link the earlier Italian traditions of Dario Castello, Fontana, and Uccellini with the composers of Central and Eastern Europe: his sonatas already foreshadow those of his successor Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, the first Austrian composer to have become court Kapellmeister in Vienna after a long series of Italians. Originally from Macerata or perhaps Rome, Schmelzer’s contemporary Marco Gioseppe Peranda became Hofkapellmeister in Dresden, where
16
his music was considered far more important than that of Heinrich Schütz. The latter had been the teacher in Dresden of David Pohle, who built his career in Weißenfels and Zeitz in Saxony. In short, through all these composers’ music listeners will be able to hear the enormous importance that the new Venetian compositional techniques and styles had in two of the most significant centers of early and mid-17th-century music across the Alps: Austria and Saxony. ejznámějším skladatelem španělské renesance je bezpochyby Mateo Flecha starší / el Viejo, ?1481–?1553). První z ensalad Matea Flechy byly poprvé uvedeny v sídle jeho zaměstnavatele a mecenáše vévody z Kalábrie a už tehdy vzbudily pozornost svým novátorstvím.

a Lucifera.

he most famous composer of the Spanish Renaissance is undoubtedly Mateo Flecha the elder (el Viejo, 1481–?1553). His popularity today was sparked by the rediscovery of his distinctive compositions with curious names like La Justa (The Joust), La Bomba (The Pump) or La Viuda (The Widow), which fall into the genre of what are known as ensaladas. The ensalada was probably best defined by Juan Díaz Rengifo in his treatise Arte poética española (The Spanish Art of Poetry), published in Salamanca in 1592, i.e. just at the period when this genre started to decline – although it remained popular in some circles of Spanish society. Rengifo describes ensalada as “a form of text composed of stanzas of four lines of verse, in which all kinds of metre are used with no rule or reason except the will of the author – and not only in Spanish, but in other languages –, this also being responsible for the diversity of musical treatment.” In other words, the ensalada is a “collage” which composes poetic and musical elements of very different origins into a coherent whole. When Flecha’s ensaladas were performed again almost 400 years after his death, their plasticity struck listeners as very modern, rather like the then new works of Pablo Picasso or George Braque. The genre, which was considered part of the current of Hispanic realism and a counterweight to the sacred Latin compositions of Spain’s leading Renaissance composers, immediately found an enthusiastic audience. Mateo Flecha’s first ensaladas were presented at the court of his employer and patron the Duke of Calabria, and their “modernity” attracted attention even then, in the 16th century, but for quite different reasons than at the time of their rediscovery in the 20th century. On the one hand the ensaladas were several times longer than Christmas carols, to which they were close in terms of content, and on the other they used recitative (in the form of a kind of conspiratorial winking at the audience), which until then had been more the privilege of theatrical forms. Finally, however much they recalled pastoral performances with a Christmas theme, they diverged from them strikingly by replacing the spoken dialogues with choral sections. In 1557 Flecha, of whose musical beginnings we know little, succeeded in attracting the favour of the cultural circle around the Duke of Calabria in Valencia. It was in Valencia, in the atmosphere of Hispanic-German euphoria following the Battle of Pavia in February 1525 when the French King Francis I was captured by the troops of Charles V, that Flecha composed his first successful ensalada El Jubilate (The Rejoicing). This was by no means his first venture in the field of ensaladas and not even the success of El Jubilante made his name overnight. Nonetheless, it was when Flecha was working on the next of his ensaladas, La Guerra (The War) with a strong patriotic message, which apart from the influence of the French composer Clément Janequin shows clear signs of Flecha’s distinctive musical style, that the grand Don Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, Duque de
24
Infantado, whose court in Guadalajara was celebrated for setting the tone of luxury and elegance among the Spanish nobility, expressed an interest in engaging his services. In the ensalada La Guerra Flecha for the first time exploits the dramatic contrast between allegories of Good and Evil, personified in the figures of Christ and Lucifer. According to the symbolism of the time these further represented the Spanish King Charles V and the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who had been forced to lift the siege of Vienna in February 1530, just before Charles V was crowned the emperor in Bologna. The plot of La Guerra prefigures another of Flecha’s ensaladas, La Justa (The Joust), which was his most famous work in his own day, partly because it was the only one to be published abroad (Lyon, 1544) during the composer’s lifetime. La Justa, which like La Guerra shows signs of the influence of Janequin’s piece La Guerre, retains the opposed figures of Lucifer and Christ, but its verses are much shorter, interlarded with dialogues and a series of changing melodies accompanied by exclamatory calls and a shower of short, onomatopoeic motifs, thirteen in all. (This number is exceeded only by La Viuda / The Widow.) Among the motifs we are struck by the refrain „Qué tocan alarma, Juana! / Hola, que tocan alarma“ (Hey, let them sound the alarm, Juana! / Hey, let them sound the alarm), based on a famous melody from a period romance telling of the siege of Vienna by the forces of Suleiman the Magnificent in the autumn of 1529, which was ended after forty-two days when the imperial army counter-attacked. Two years later war with Suleiman broke out again: the sultan gathered a strong army and advanced into Austria. While the imperial army defeated the Turks in the Mediterranean, on the 23rd of September 1532, Charles V advanced to Vienna and forced the enemy to retreat. Its connection with these international military events has led historians to date the first performance of the ensalada to Christmas 1532 or 1533. In the years 1539 to 1541 Flecha was once again in Valencia, seeking to obtain the favour of the Duke of Calabria and above all his second wife, the highly educated Mencía de Mendoza, who was to acquire for her library a special collection of the master’s ensaladas including the very last, called La Viuda (The Widow). Full of autobiographical references, this piece tells of a man who has known success and is now once again seeking a place consistent with his status, a man who has decided to return to Valencia, but to church circles rather than the court, which is dominated by the

Italianised musical taste of the Duke of Calabria, and incompatible with the Elizabethan Gothic style embraced by Flecha and characteristic of the Spanish Renaissance. One of the allegorical figures in La Viuda is Music, representing Flecha himself. The piece also contains hidden references to the enlightenment of Mencía de Mendoza and a “charge” (querella criminal) against the councillors of the Chapter of Valencia, who paid the composer an insultingly low fee, as well as generally “against the common people” (contra el vulgo) who, as the verse say, prefer “strumming on the guitar / to that which is superbly refined” (al tintín de guitarrilla / que a lo que es por maravilla / delicado), by which is meant the art of the composer himself. Flecha gets his own back in this difficult situation in masterly ironic fashion, with a comical grimace and the use of a nonsensical folk saying: „Tap, tap, tap, / tap with the foot on the cap / of auntie Juana Matroca“ (Toca, toca, toca / con el pie se toca la toca / la Juana Matroca), as a shrugging off of all his feelings of bitterness. The work of Mateo Flecha the elder is known today mainly because of the printed edition of Las Ensaladas (Prague, 1581), prompted by Mateo’s nephew and namesake Mateo Flecha the younger (el Joven), imperial chaplain and from 1579 abbot in Tihany in Hungary. In addition to his uncle’s eight ensaladas he included others by other composers, including La Trulla (The Riot) by Bartolomé Cárceres. Cárceres who was a canon at the Chapter of Gandía and from 1540 for ten years a member of the Duke of Calabria’s orchestra, honoured Flecha’s example, although the style of his ensaladas is more transparent. Compared to Flecha’s refined treatment, which used the “story” only through hints and suggestions and always remained ambiguous in its interpretation, in Cárceres’s ensaladas the separate sections are just lined up straightforwardly one after the other. In his ensaladas there is almost always an introduction in the form of a dialogue dominated by imitated counterpoint. The twelve parts of the piece La Trulla are so independent of each other that leaving any of them out would in no way upset the overall impression of the work. By contrast, Flecha was outstanding in his ability to construct a series of sung parts of the piece in such an integrated way that leaving out one would render the whole piece incomprehensible. Ensaladas remained popular into the 17th century, but the genre gradually merged with carols, so returning to its roots. Particularly obscure is the historical development of the very specific branch of carols usually performed by black people and known as „negrillas.“ This is in fact a kind of “sub-genre” that evolved above all in Latin America; its probable starting points were La Negrina (The Blacky) by Mateo Flecha the elder and an ensalada of the same title by Bartolomé Cárceres. istorikové umění zabývající se hudbou autorů 15. století, kteří pocházeli z území dnešního Beneluxu, severní Francie (Artois), Lorraine, horního Alsaska, Franche-Comté a Burgundska a kteří působili u dvorů v Lille, Bruggách, Arras a Bruselu nebo při kostelech a katedrálách ve výše zmiňované oblasti, hovoří často o skladatelích „franko-vlámské“ či „nizozemské“ školy.

Anežky České, je ideálním místem pro autentický akustický zážitek skýtající možnost slyšet tuto překrásnou a komplikovanou hudbu tak, jak kdysi zněla ve velkých mariánských kaplích románských a gotických katedrál v Tournai, Bruggách nebo Gentu. hen music historians refer to the music of 15th-century composers who originated in the region including modern-day Benelux, Northern France (Artois), Lorraine, Haute-Alsace, FrancheComté and Burgundy, and who worked at the courts of Lille, Brugge, Arras, and Brussels, and/or in the various churches and cathedrals of the same region, they often talk about “Franco-Flemish” or “Netherlandish” composers. These terms are problematic because they are vague, and at the same too broad and too narrow. On the other hand, if we talk about them as “Burgundian” composers, we are historically more accurate, but it implies from the readers that they know that – even though present-day Burgundy and Franche-Comté were part of 15th-century Burgundy – the court and the government were actually located at different moments in one of the abovementioned cities in today’s Northern France or Belgium. With this preamble in mind, I still believe that “Burgundian Composers” is a better term than “Franco-Flemish School.” Philip the Bold was the first Duke of Burgundy to organize a musical chapel in 1384, and when he died 20 years later, the chapel (of 28 singers) had grown to become even larger than that of the king of France and of the pope in Avignon. It was under Duke Philip the Good that the Burgundian chapel achieved its greatest fame: by the middle of the century it was known to be one of the “largest and best maintained chapels that could be found anywhere.” Singers of the chapel all served as priests, composers, performers, teachers, and scribes, participating in the daily Mass and canonical hours. Although the regular services were normally sung in chant, for special celebrations and important liturgical feasts, polyphonic sections of the Ordinary and Proper were interpolated in the monophonic chanting. In 1477, when Duke Charles the Bold was killed in the battle of Nancy, his only daughter Marie of Burgundy and her Habsburg husband Maximilian I

kept all musical institutions of the court, and talented composers such as Alexander Agricola and Pierre de la Rue remained in service even under Marie’s son and successor Philip the Handsome. It was only when his son Charles V became Emperor that the musical traditions of the dukes of Burgundy merged with those of the Spanish Habsburgs. Pierre de la Rue, born in Tournai around 1452, was undoubtedly one of the most important composers of his time along with Josquin Desprez. Although little is known about his early career, it is almost certain that he was trained in the cathedral of Tournai, and that by 1492 he had joined the Habsburg-Burgundian chapel, where he spent the remainder of his professional life. Even though he travelled a few times to Spain with the court, and ended up working for Henry VII in England for a while, he mainly stayed at court and collaborated with such musicians as Agricola, Weerbeke, de Orto, Champion and Divitis. He gradually assumed the almost official status as court composer and probably influenced the compilation of the many musical manuscripts emanating from the court scriptorium, possibly even sometimes acting as scribe. He was rewarded by several valuable prebends (a portion of the revenues of a cathedral or collegiate church as a stipend) in Namur, Kortrijk – where he retired and died in 1518 – Dendermonde, and Gent. He was one of the most prolific mass composers of his generation, and his masses circulated in various important manuscripts. In contrast to his contemporaries, la Rue drew relatively little on secular models for his masses, but more often turned to chant models, a number of which remain unidentified. He typically wrote for equal voices and constantly varied his texture within individual movements. Like Josquin, he was fond of paired voices, and used them frequently to provide contrast and lighten the texture. La Rue made use of both homophonic sections and non-imitative polyphony, but imitative writing is by far the most common texture, with melodic entries occurring at times on unusual intervals. He was particularly admired for his contrapuntal mastery. His significance for now thus rests on the quantity, type and quality of his compositions as well as a number of historic firsts. Taken as a whole, his output presents a liturgical completeness of a kind unequalled among his contemporaries: a set of masses for the most important Marian feasts, another
35
series of miscellaneous Marian masses, masses for the dead, the blessed sacrament, the holy cross, Christmas, Easter, and daily use, a complete Magnificat cycle and settings of three of the four most important Marian antiphons, including an astonishing series of six versions of Salve Regina. The Missa Ave Maria, or rather “de Annuntiatione Maria” for four and five voices performed tonight by the Capilla Flamenca is one of the eleven Marian masses of a total of 32 complete extant mass settings. This shows how much Marian devotion occupied an important place around 1500 at the Burgundian court. The fact that Pierre de la Rue dedicated one third of all his masses to the Virgin attests to the significance of the devotion to her. The Missa de Annuntiatione Maria is based on the chant antiphon with which the angel Gabriel greeted Mary as he announced the coming of Christ on 25 March. By using various compositional techniques in his polyphonic setting of this Marian antiphon, Pierre de la Rue arrives at an intimate and serene yet lively, moving, and varied five-part whole. The mass setting presented today is completed by Marian hymns and by a shortened Marian Vesper service. As usual in this year’s festival, the venue chosen for this performance – the gothic Saint Saviour Church in the monastery of Saint Agnes – is an ideal space and acoustical environment to fully experience the sound the music would have produced in the large Marian chapels of Romanesque or Gothic cathedrals such as those of Tournai, Brugge, or Gent. Capilla Flamenca Vokálně-instrumenální soubor Capilla Flamenca si svůj název vypůjčil od sboru dvorské kapely císaře Karla V. Když císař v roce 1517 opouštěl Nizozemí, vzal s sebou i své nejlepší hudebníky, aby ho jako „živoucí polyfonie“ doprovázeli na cestě do Španělska. z 15. a 16. století. Vokální jádro souboru (kontratenor, tenor, baryton, bas) doplňují v závislosti na charakteru konkrétního programu také tzv. alta capella (konsort dechových nástrojů), bassa capella (strunné nástroje), varhany nebo další hlasy. Průzračný zvukový profil, který interpretaci polyfonie v podání souboru Capilla Flamenca charakterizuje, vychází z dokonalé, tvořivé souhry vokálních i nástrojových složek. Capilla Flamenca The vocal and instrumental consort Capilla Flamenca takes its name from the choir of the court chapel of Emperor Charles V. When Charles left the Low Countries in 1517, he took his best musicians with him in order to accompany him as “living polyphony” to Spain. Today’s Capilla Flamenca recruits its specialized musicians mainly from Flanders so as to bring to life again the unique timbre of this brilliant music in its full authenticity. According to the needs of the particular programme or genre, today’s vocal core of the ensemble (counter tenor, tenor, baritone, bass) is enlarged with an alta capella (wind instruments), a bassa capella (string instruments), organ or with complementary singers. The transparent polyphonic sound-image of Capilla Flamenca originates from a creative interaction between the musicians. This process demands an acute awareness of the historical, poetical and technical aspects of polyphonic music. Dirk Snellings, in cooperation with some prominent musicologists, has created a number of unique and multi-dimensional programmes. Capilla Flamenca has been honoured with some of the most prestigious international awards for the artistic, musicological and historical thoroughness of its performance. Numerous CD recordings have received major awards, including several Prix Chocs (Le Monde de la Musique), Diapason d’Ors, Répertoire10 and the Klara Music Prize 2004.

edlouho poté, co Španělé násilně obsadili Střední a Jižní Ameriku, rozdělila říšská koruna nově získané území na základě teoretického modelu vytvořeného jak katolickou církví, tak několika administrativními vládami vedenými místokráli. Koncem 16. století už byla oblast španělské Ameriky, tedy celého kontinentu kromě Brazílie, rozdělena na pět arcibiskupství a dvacet sedm biskupství. O několik století později byl církevní systém územního dělení kolonií nahrazen pěti místokrálovstvími, z nichž dvě mají vztah k dnešnímu koncertu – místokrálovství Peru, zahrnující audiencie Limy, Cuzca a Chile, a místokrálovství La Plata s audienciemi Caracasu (Bolívie a Paraguay) a Buenos Aires (Argentina a Uruguay). Už v prvních misijních školách zaujímala hudební výchova, zahrnující výuku evropského zpěvu, hru na nástroj a dokonce studium kompozice, velmi důležitou roli.

Marc Vanscheeuwijck

hortly after the brutal conquest of Central and then South America by the Spaniards, the imperial crown organized the newly acquired lands according to a theocratic model ruled by both the Catholic Church and several administrative governments headed by viceroys. By the end of the 16th century the territory of Spanish America (that is, excluding Brazil) was already subdivided in 5 archbishoprics and 27 bishoprics, whereas a couple of centuries later the colonies had been organized in superimposition with the religious system in 5 vice-kingdoms, 2 of which are relevant for tonight’s performance: the vice-kingdom of Peru, including the “audiencias” of Lima, Cuzco and Chile, and the vice-kingdom of La Plata with the audiencias of Charcas (Bolivia and Paraguay) and of Buenos Aires (Argentina and Uruguay). Beginning in the 1520s, Franciscan, Dominican, and Augustinian missionaries from Spain and Flanders organized the massive catechization and education of the Indios. Later, in the 1570s the Jesuits took over the educational aspects, whereas the Benedictines,
42
Capuchins, and Carmelites limited themselves to the evangelization of the native populations. Several of these missionaries promptly understood the importance of music and dance in the worshipping practices of the Indios, and were quick to use them in their conversion endeavors. In the earliest schools the teaching of European singing, instrumental performance and even composition was a priority. In addition to performing music by the “standard” Spanish sacred music composers (Guerrero, Moráles, Victoria, Lobo, etc.), composers made some fascinating “adaptations” to include some native elements, which produced a riveting mixed style long before the idea of mixing French and Italian styles became fashionable in France around 1700 in “Les goûts réünis.” Typical for the missions’ repertoire was indeed the coexistence and superimposition of 16th- century style polyphony in “stile antico” with native dance songs played on a mixture of local (mostly wind and percussion) and European instruments (viols, violins, lutes, vihuelas, harps, organs, etc.). In addition, the Spanish (and later also locally-born) composers working in South America included some tonal (bitonality) and rhythmic elements (syncopated rhythms, 2 against 3, etc.) from these native songs, and sometimes even translated Christian texts into Quechua, the language of the Indios. In short, that symbiosis created a style and some musical forms, particularly dances that even made their way back to Europe and were incorporated in the standard Baroque suite. In tonight’s concert Música Temprana performs a variety of pieces, primarily taken from the Codex Trujillo del Perú, a set of nine manuscripts preserved in the Library of the Royal Palace in Madrid. The nine volumes – commissioned in the 1780s by Peruvian archbishop and ethnologist Baltasar Jaime Martínez Compañon y Bujanda (1737–1797) to show the “Historia”

of his archbishopric to King Charles III of Spain – contain a series of maps, plans and drawings relating to the diocese of Trujillo, its provinces and some of its cities, along with portraits of local figures (Volume I). Volume II includes scenes of local life of the different ethnic groups in the Trujillo area, and there are also 18 aquarelles with the scores of the 20 pieces of music included in the codex. The other volumes are dedicated to the plant (III–V) and animal kingdoms (VI–VIII) and to the indigenous past of Peru (IX). The codex was compiled at an interesting moment in colonial Peru: between the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 and the beginning of the many independence wars (1808) in the South-American continent, when Peru and its cities of Lima and Cuzco had become a highly influential musical centre. The twenty compositions not only strongly resemble today’s folk music of the region, but the accompanying aquarelles allow us to reconstruct the original performing forces fairly precisely: instruments used include harps, guitars, pan flutes, violins, and a number of percussion instruments. Most pieces are anonymous and are bailes, tonadas or cachuas. Tonada in Spain was a term used to refer to a variety of short secular (love) or sacred songs for solo voice in strophic form, sometimes performed with a second voice in parallel thirds. Originally a cachua was a South-American courtship circle-dance of the Bolivian and Peruvian Aymara Indians in which furand feather-clad dancers imitated movements of animals. Here again, the Codex provides information about costumes and instruments (through the aquarelles), although we know nothing about how the cachua was actually danced. Finally, the baile is a genre of music-dramatic spectacle performed at religious festivals that combined Christian and pre-Christian imagery. In addition to the pieces taken from the Codex Trujillo, Música Temprana also brings a few Bolivian pieces found in Jesuit missions. The way the Jesuits went about the catechization of the natives was different from most other religious orders, in that they made it a point to study the native language (here Chiquitano) and often even held the liturgical services in the local idiom. In the marvellous Baroque environment of the Troja Chateau, today’s performance is bound to offer a program as festive for the ears as the space is for the eyes. Marc Vanscheeuwijck

Většina programů souboru vychází z výsledků badatelské práce uměleckého vedoucího, který v hudebních archivech katedrál a jezuitských misií v Jižní Americe nalézá nepřeberné množství pozapomenutých hudebních pokladů. Rozmanitý repertoár ansámblu vychází z kulturní pestrosti a bohatství Latinské Ameriky a vykazuje řadu kreolských, indiánských a afrických prvků prolínajících se s všudypřítomným evropským vlivem. Música Temprana spolupracuje s řadou významných sólistů a instrumentalistů, z nichž jmenujme například Christophera Kaleho (tenor), Bárbaru Kusa (soprán), Xenii Meijer (mezzosoprán), Richarda Pradu (tenor), Gabriela Aguileru Valdebenita (kytara, zpěv, perkuse), Woutera Verschurena (dulcian), Joannu Huszcza, Antoinette Lohmann a Mónicu Waisman (housle) nebo Sarah Walder (viola da gamba).

Música Temprana Founded in 2001 by the Argentine-Dutch musician Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel, Música Temprana aims to highlight the Latin-American baroque music repertoire. Most of Música Temprana’s repertoire derives from the archives, cathedrals and Jesuit missions of Latin America, into whose depths its director constantly delves for elusive, forgotten compositions. Woven throughout the many-faceted fabric of Música Temprana’s music and instrumental line-up is the rich cultural diversity of Latin America in which threads of Creole, Indian and African music are combined with allusions to the omnipresent European influences. With a classical schooling received mostly in the foremost Dutch universities and institutions, fed by roots in the musical tradition of Latin America, the musicians of Música Temprana revel in the fusion of the distinct facets of Baroque and folklore, so special to its repertoire. Also unique is Música Temprana’s instrumentarium: alongside the harp, violin, guitar and their baroque peers of southern Europe, a variety of Latin-American instruments are used. Música Temprana has worked with a wide variety of prominent musicians and soloists, including Christopher Kale (tenor), Bárbara Kusa (soprano), Xenia Meijer (mezzo-soprano), Marisú Pavón (soprano), Richard Prado (tenor), Gabriel Aguilera Valdebenito (guitar, vocals, percussion), Wouter Verschuren (dulcian), Joanna Huszcza (violin), Antoinette Lohmann (violin), Mónica Waisman (violin) and Sarah Walder (viola da gamba).

Vyobrazení cinku ze Syntagma Musicum II De Organographia od Michaela Praetoria 1619 / Depiction of cornett from Syntagma Musicum II De Organographia by Michael Praetorius, 1619
Slavný francouzský myslitel a hudební teoretik Marin Mersenne

Marc Vanscheeuwijck

hroughout this year’s festival, which focuses on the idea of festa or music-making in festive contexts, it has been made clear that it is not necessarily always the compositions themselves that are festive, but rather the specific occasion for which they were written or performed. In other words, it is most often the context that determines the degree of festa of a composition, and that context can be private, political, sacred, secular, or somewhere in between the secular and the sacred. Sometimes secular songs can become part of sacred compositions, and conversely, originally sacred pieces can be integrated with secular elements. Such a partial transition from the sacred into the non-sacred festive realm is precisely the object of tonight’s recital, which offers a variety of 16th- and 17th-century Italian motets and instrumental pieces that could have been played in both liturgical and courtly contexts. Obviously, organ pieces by Gabrieli and Storace clearly have sacred functions – although often such compositions were performed on harpsichord, or even harp in a more courtly environment – but written-down improvisations such as variations on Ciacconas or Passamezzi were indeed secular dances that could be inserted in the liturgy. The same happens with famous motets, madrigals, or chansons by Palestrina, Gabrieli or Lasso, that went through a second incarnation in virtuoso ornamented (“diminished”) versions for a flexible solo instrument such as the cornett or the violin, in which the keyboard instrument basically presents the almost original setting of the polyphonic piece. That sort of ambivalence between the sacred and
52
the secular seems odd to us today, but was quite “normal” in the Baroque period, and maybe even more so in Latin America than in Europe. Festive qualities in this type of music – independently from the context in which they were performed – are the virtuoso ornamental elaborations of original compositions that often already had some celebratory function. Since the cornett was primarily an instrument used along with sackbuts in church music ensembles from the late Middle Ages through the Baroque period, it had a long career as a member of polyphonic music ensembles, and as such it was used in both purely instrumental pieces (sonatas, canzonas, ricercars) and in vocal music doubling the voices. Indeed, the instrument was often described as being very close to the human voice, particularly that of a boy soprano. The great French music theorist Mersenne thought that it was “like a ray of sunshine piercing the shadows, when heard with the choir voices in the cathedrals or chapels” (1636). However, the treble cornett also had a long life – and more so than other wind instruments – as a virtuoso solo instrument. Since it acquired that function towards the middle of the 16th century, the cornett players mainly distinguished themselves in the spectacular diminutions (or divisions, that is elaborate ornamentations as extravagant as those produced on the violin or bass viol, or by the voice) they improvised on well-known sacred or secular pieces. This type of ornamented versions of motets (Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina), madrigals (Palestrina), and chansons (Orlando di Lasso’s Susanne un jour) will be heard tonight both in ornamented versions written down at the time (Rognoni’s diminutions of Palestrina’s madrigal Io son ferito), or with improvised diminutions by Doron David Sherwin, as true professional performers would have done in the 16th and 17th century. Another type of pieces that cornettists cultivated were the various genres in which a treble instrument was featured over an accompanying basso continuo part, as it is the case in the Capriccio of Milanese composer Giovanni Paolo Cima, or in the Sonata Sesta by Venetian musician Giovanni Battista Fontana. In some situations polyphonic canzonas for four to eight instruments could also be performed either by one or by two keyboard instruments, or by one or a few solo instruments, while the other parts were played by the organist. In short, there was a fairly large amount of freedom in how such compositions were actually performed: this is certainly the case in such pieces as the Canzon 16 by Ottavio Bargnani from Brescia, La Brillantina by Gioseffo Guami from Lucca, La Gratiosa by Claudio Merulo from Correggio (active in Parma), and the Canzona seconda of Venetian organist Giovanni Gabrieli. Tonight’s panorama of pieces that showcases the various roles of the cornett is further varied by alternations with polyphonic pieces for keyboard solo by Jakob Hassler – born in Nurnberg and active in Augsburg, but who had studied in Venice – and dance variations by the Venetian organist Giovanni Picchi, and by the probably northern Italian composer (though
53
active in Sicily) Bernardo Storace. Finally, we will also be treated with some early 16th-century pieces by Jan z Lublina, or Joannis de Lublin, a Polish composer who worked as an organist at the convent in Kraśnik, near Lublin. His organ tablature from 1537–48 – an anthology of organ transcriptions of sacred and secular pieces by such Renaissance musicians as Brumel, Girolamo Cavazzoni, Costanzo and Sebastiano Festa, Finck, Lupus Hellinck, Jacotin, Janequin, Josquin, Sandrin, Senfl, Sermisy, Verdelot, and others – was the largest such collection ever compiled with its 350 compositions. The gothic Saint Francis church of the Saint Agnes Convent is again an ideal space to enjoy both the beautiful vocal sound qualities of the cornett mixed with those of the organ, and a repertoire that would have resonated in the medieval and Renaissance churches of Northern Italy. vým hráčem na cink, ale zejména vysoce uznávaným specialistou na improvizační techniky od středověku po různé formy jazzu. Jeho hluboce expresivní interpretační styl vycházející z respektování a důvěrné znalosti virtuózních interpretačních stylů minulosti, se stal působivým a nezaměnitelným prvkem koncertních i nahrávacích projektů souborů nové generace, z nichž jmenujme například Arpeggiatu, Capriccio Stravagante, Oltremontano, Odhecaton, Concerto Italiano, La Venexianu nebo La Reverdie.
Doron David Sherwin Described as “one of the world’s best instrumentalists,” Doron David Sherwin has performed throughout the world on the cornett since leaving his native California in 1984. A pupil of Bruce Dickey at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, he has regularly performed and recorded alongside Dickey for over 25 years in numerous internationally acclaimed European ensembles such as Hespérion XXI, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, the Taverner Players, the Hilliard Ensemble, Cantus Cölln – and particularly as a member of Concerto Palatino, universally recognized as one of the principal ensembles for early brass music and indeed for 17th-century music in general. Highly sought after as a specialist in the improvisational traditions of music from the Middle Ages to jazz, his uniquely expressive performing style, inspired by a profound respect and intimate knowledge of the performing traditions of past generations of virtuosi, has become a lively and unmistakable element of the concerts and recordings of a new generation of ensembles such as Arpeggiata, Capriccio Stravagante, Oltremontano, Odhecaton, Concerto Italiano, La Venexiana and La Reverdie.

P
he subtitle of this concert, “Music of a Biedermeier Salon” refers much more to a culture than to a specific musical style. The term itself was borrowed from the name of a fictional school teacher, imagined in the early 1850s by Ludwig Eichrodt as a satirical caricature of a bourgeois philistine, and was used to denote the bourgeois culture of German-speaking Europe – particularly southern Germany and Austria between 1815 and 1848 (a heated period of revolutions) – that was trying to ignore all the political turmoil of the time. It was later adopted to refer to the comfortable domestic architecture and the decorative arts and painting of these years, and to a way of life founded in peaceful domestic harmony. The Biedermeier culture of domesticity, associated with a politically dormant bourgeoisie, presents an image of social stability, characterized by a political conservatism whose aims were summed up as “the repression of liberalism and the preservation of the status quo.” Finally, the term was only adopted in literary history in the 1930s to designate the short period of post-Romanticism, which saw the beginnings of realism but also adhered to the heritage of German Classicism. In music of that culture there were sharply conflicting styles as well, which explains why the term is better used as a description of the musical culture of the time than as a designation of a specific style or school. Throughout the Biedermeier period Vienna was the most significant musical center: the growth of the urban middle class also stimulated the development of private music making in small circles. One of the best examples is the Schubertiaden of the 1820s. Maybe even more important was the growing impact of the salon culture in those years; the exiled Moravian novelist Charles Sealsfield (pseudonym for Karl Anton Postl) described music making of the Viennese bourgeoisie in his fairly hostile account of Metternich’s Austria (Austria As It Is; London, 1828) as follows: “Wherever you go, the sound of musical instruments will reach your ears. Whatever family of the middle class you enter, the pianoforte is the first object which strikes your eyes; you are hardly seated, and a flagon filled

with wine, another with water, and Pressburg biscuit placed before you, when the host will tell Caroline to play a tune to the gentleman.” It was in this culture that Lieder, Moments Musicaux, Bagatelles and other small-scale piano pieces such as dances and etudes became popular, sometimes in a sentimental, sometimes in a more ironic style. The conservative Biedermeier composers often saw themselves as followers of Mozart and of the Classic style, whereas the more Romantic souls considered themselves to be the heirs of Beethoven. Tonight’s performance by Laterna Magica of excerpts from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni thus makes perfect sense in this context, particularly in the beautiful mid-18thcentury Theresian Hall of the Břevnov Monastery. This concert also offers an introduction to a rather unknown instrument, the csakan, which is a duct flute (working like a train conductor’s whistle!) in the shape of a walking stick – and later, in the 1820s, in the shape of an oboe – popular around Vienna from 1807 until the 1840s. Related to the shepherds’ flutes of Hungary, Slovakia and Croatia, some csakan could even serve as a weapon. The earliest reported appearance of the csakan was during a concert in Budapest on 18 February 1807 where the performer, Anton Heberle played on this instrument of his own invention. The oboe-shaped csakan, made in three parts existed in both a “simple” form, with one key, and in a more “complex” form, with seven. The Viennese court oboist Ernst Krähmer (1795–1837) seems to have been the most virtuoso professional player on this instrument – as can be attested by the three compositions for one or two csakan and pianoforte heard today – appearing frequently in concerts in Vienna from the 1820s on. However, at the time the csakan was primarily an amateur’s instrument, usually acquired by players who wanted just a simple and inexpensive instrument. The complete literature for csakan spans from 1807 to c.1845, and consists of almost 400 published compositions, mostly for csakan solo, csakan duet or csakan with guitar or piano. All these pieces for csakan and pianoforte will be interpolated with free fantasies, improvisations following the precepts published by the Viennese piano pedagogue and virtuoso Carl Czerny in his Systematische Anleitung zum Fantasieren auf dem Pianoforte, opus 200 (Vienna, 1829). Vedle bohaté koncertní činnosti působí členové souboru pedagogicky při svých původních univerzitách, účastní se konferencí a vedou mistrovské kurzy s tématikou barokní i soudobé hudby.
Laterna Magica The founding members of Laterna Magica are graduates of conservatories in Brussels, Paris and the Hague. Focussing mostly on the trio sonata repertoire of the baroque period, the ensemble has nevertheless been working also to rehabilitate the historical tradition of arrangements and transcriptions, allowing them substantial space in their concert programmes. The first recording of Laterna Magica, “Exercitium” for the Solal label is dedicated to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Laterna Magica regularly appears at some of the foremost venues and festivals not only in Europe, but also in various countries of Asia (Hanoi, Vietnam and New Dehli, India) and South America (Encuentro musical bolivianoeuropeo in La Paz and Misiones de Chiquitos in Santa-Cruz, Bolívia, festival Esteban Salas 2007 in Habana, Kuba). Alongside their international concert career, the members of Laterna Magica maintain pedagogical activities in their former universities, as participants of conferences and teachers of master classes on baroque as well as contemporary music.

K
Organizace hudebních složek spočívala v dělení do tří různých institucí – „Chambre du Roy“ / „Králova komnata“, „Grande Écurie“ / „Velká konírna“ a „Chapelle Royale“ / „Královská kaple“. Hudebníci patřící k „Chambre“ zajišťovali komponování a interpretaci světské hudby u dvora. Patřilo sem přibližně osm sólových zpěváků, cembalista, dva loutnisté, theorbista, čtyři flétnisté, tři gambisté a čtyři houslisté.

října 1722, Nicolas Henri Tardieu (1674–1749), mědiryt / Les Douze Grands Hautbois at the coronation of Louis XV in Reims on 25 October 1722, Nicolas Henri Tardieu (1674–1749), copperplate
Bohatě zdobený Španělský sál Pražského hradu pocházející ze 17. století je navíc svou velkolepostí příhodným místem konání koncertu, který je přehlídkou fanfár, ouvertur a entrée od těch nejslavnějších autorů v Ludvíkových službách. hile Jean-Baptiste Lully, André Danican Philidor, and MichelRichard de Lalande were among the champions of solemn and ceremonial music in their tragédies lyriques, comédies-ballets, and symphonies for the king’s suppers, Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Jean-Baptiste Stuck introduced some Italian elements in the uniquely French music idiom which Lully had created as part of the King’s and Colbert’s propaganda machine of the French nation. After Lully’s death in 1687, the Parisian underground culture of Italian-style music was able to re-emerge through Charpentier, who had studied in Rome, and through the composers who introduced the Italian cantata at the court of Philippe d’Orléans around 1700; Stuck was one of them. Like Marin Marais – the king’s chamber star viola da gamba virtuoso – Stuck also composed operas, but Marin Marais’s three tragédies lyriques belong to the best the first years of the 18th century have produced. An instrumentalist and composer, whose musical activities revolved around the court in Versailles, André Danican Philidor l’aîné is probably mostly remembered for his work as the king’s music librarian, in which capacity he presided over an large effort to collect and preserve music not only from Louis XIV’s reign, but as far back as that of Henri IV a century earlier. It is largely thanks to him that today we can still hear the music presented in this program! Another protagonist in today’s performance, though not a musician but a comic actor and playwright of comedies, is Jean-Baptiste Pocquelin, better known as Molière. He is indeed the famous author of a number of comedies, including Le malade imaginaire, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Les Amants magnifiques, L’amour médecin, and through his association with Lully from 1663 on he greatly contributed to the various court spectacles, of
70
which excerpts will be heard tonight. As Molière stressed in his preface to Les fâcheux (1661), his artistic aim in his comédies-ballets was to achieve a more integrated spectacle, one in which vocal music and dance complemented the principal intrigue presented in the spoken dialogue. Lully and Molière’s partnership lasted for about 7 years, during which they produced some of the greatest masterpieces of the genre. In the course of this period, the music gradually increased in prominence in their comedies. The subject of their last collaboration, Le bourgeois gentilhomme (1670), a rich bourgeois trying to become a cultivated gentleman, provided ample scope for Lully (in scenes where the protagonist seeks to be a patron or student of the arts with very comic results) – so much so that the critic of the Gazette de Paris found the intrigue of the comédie almost irrelevant compared to the music! After breaking his partnership with Lully, Molière began to collaborate with Marc-Antoine Charpentier, whose Le malade imaginaire (1673) was revised three times to avoid legal problems with Lully, but it nonetheless still achieved great success. Music at Louis XIV’s court was, like everything else in Versailles, highly organized and structured: the various ensembles each had their specific functions, instrumentalists, singers, and directors, who all operated under supervision of Lully, the Surintendant de la Musique de la Chambre du Roy. The musical organization was articulated in three major institutions: the Chambre du Roy, the Grande Écurie, and the Chapelle Royale. Musicians of the Chambre were responsible for the composition and performance of secular music at court, and consisted of about eight solo singers, a harpsichordist, two lutenists, one theorbo player, four flutists, three viol players and four violinists. Although financed as part of the Chambre, the 24 Violons du Roi were an autonomous group; they played for royal ballets, for coronations and marriages, and for the king’s dinner on festive days. Finally, the Petits Violons (or Petite Bande) – the most indispensable musicians to the king – came under the jurisdiction of the Cabinet rather than the Chambre, and was eventually suppressed after the death of Louis XIV (in 1715), while the 24 Violons continued to exist until 1761. The second ensemble, the Grande Écurie was divided into five subcategories consisting of about 40 instrumentalists: (1) 12 trumpets players, (2) 8 fifes and drums, (3) 12 among violins, oboes, sackbuts and cornetts, (4) six additional oboes and musettes, and (5) six players of crumhorns and a tromba marina. Their duties consisted of providing music for the many ceremonies in honor of foreign dignitaries, for parades and outdoor fêtes, and they also accompanied the king to parliament, on the battlefield and during the hunt. Whereas the twelve Grands Hautbois du Roy (ten oboes and two bassoons) had only three annual official duties, they mostly joined the 24 Violons or the Petits Violons in court entertainments. Finally, the last group, the Chapelle Royale, an ensemble of solo singers, a choir, and instruments was responsible for the
71
performance of sacred music (primarily grands and petits motets) in the royal chapel at Versailles. Going back to the title of today’s concert, Entrée is one of those terms that was used in many different ways in 17th-century French music, depending on its context: in the ballet de cour it referred to a group of dances linked by a specific subject, such as “entrée des Cyclopes” or “entrée des Indiens.” Entrées divided the acts of a ballet into several scenes, whereas the récits separated the ballet into acts. However, in the opéra-ballet and in the tragédie lyrique an entrée marked the beginning of the divertissement of dances and songs found in most acts, or it could even refer to the entrance of a single character. In tonight’s festive closing concert of the festival, the term is applied in all its above-mentioned meanings. This joint performance of Les Lunaisiens, Arena Musicale, Collegium Marianum and vocal soloists Jean-François Novelli and Arnaud Marzorati, thus perfectly emulating the various music groups in 17th-century Versailles – with the exception of the chapelle royale – will bring a celebratory anthology of secular pieces, articulated in four entrées as they would have been heard at court during Louis XIV’s reign. Moreover, the richly decorated 17th-century Spanish Hall at the Prague Castle is an ideal and spectacular venue for this feast of fanfares, overtures, and entrées from some of the most celebrated composers in Louis’s employ. Jean-François Novelli A holder of an MA title in musicology, Jean-François Novelli, originally a recorder player, studied singing at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. The top prize in the Sinfonia competition under the patronage of Gustav Leonhardt and the ADAMI prize for young artists at the Midem competition in Cannes triggered off his international career which has included collaboration with some of the best ensembles of baroque music in Europe, such as Il Seminario Musicale, Talents Lyriques, Concert Spirituel, Les Arts Florissants, and Hespèrion XXI, and appearances at some of the greatest festivals of early music around the world. The operatic career of Jean- François Novelli has been just as dynamic, bringing him to a number of prominent stages in France and abroad in a repertoire ranging from the Baroque through Classicism to contemporary music. A number of audio and video recordings document his achievements. He dedicates himself also to chamber music and has appeared in recitals with lute or string quartet. In 2004 Jean-François Novelli together with Arnaud Marzorati established the ensemble Lunaisiens.

Arnaud Marzorati Arnaud Marzorati took up singing at the Centre of Baroque Music in Versailles under the guidance of James Bowman, Noël Lee, Martin Isepp and Sena Jurinac and continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, graduating with Premier Prix de Chant. His repertoire encompasses music from the Baroque to the most recent compositions. The rich, varied career of Arnaud Marzorati has included numerous operatic roles, such as Figaro in The Barber of Seville, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Sganarelle in Gounod’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself, or as Arbas in Cadmus et Hermione in the Comic Opera in Paris. He has made recordings with numerous baroque ensembles, in 2008 Alpha Production issued a CD featuring songs by Pierre-Jean de Béranger. Together with Jean-François Novelli he founded the ensemble Lunaisiens whose first CD was dedicated to cantatas by Jean-Baptiste Stuck (2007, Alpha Production).

Vantaan Barokki, Mozartfest, Mitte Europa atd.). V roce 2008 soubor zahájil úspěšnou spolupráci s hudebním vydavatelstvím Supraphon, v rámci jehož řady Hudba Prahy 18. století vydal již tři nahrávky, mj. Brentner, J. J. I. Koncerty a árie a Rorate coeli / Advent a Vánoce v barokní Praze.
Collegium Marianum Since it was founded in 1997, the Prague ensemble Collegium Marianum has focused on revitalising the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. One of the few professional companies specialising in this field in the Czech Republic, it not only gives concerts of works in particular by composers who were born or active in central Europe. Several modern day world premieres are presented each year. The ensemble has collaborated with renowned European directors, choreographers, conductors and soloists such as: Andrew Parrott, Simon Standage, Chiara Banchini, Benjamin Lazar, Jean-Denis Monory or Peter Kooij. Since 1999 the ensemble has been under the artistic leadership of flautist Jana Semerádová, whose active research together with her study of baroque gesture, declamation and dance, has enabled her to gradually broaden the profile of the

Collegium Marianum ensemble and present operas and intermezzos in the authentic surroundings of Czech baroque theatres. Collegium Marianum has received critical acclaim both at home and abroad. It regularly performs at music festivals and in prestigious concert halls both in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe, for example Vantaan Barokki, Mozartfest, Mitte Europa. The orchestra’s recordings include three CDs for the Supraphon series, such as Music From Eighteenth-Century Prague: “Brentner, J. J. I. Concertos & Arias” and “Rorate coeli / Music for Advent and Christmas in Baroque Prague.” In January 2010 the Czech Music Council – the Czech section of the International Council of Music by UNESCO – awarded Collegium Marianum honour for quality and propagation of Czech music.

Arena Musicale Arena Musicale is a chamber ensemble of historical wind instruments focussed on the performance of 17th- and 18th-century music. The unique sound of the ensemble, resulting from the absence of string instruments, is based on combinations of recorders and various double-reed instruments such as oboes and bassoons. The ensemble is modelled on tradition of French royal music.
