Ján Macko je sochař, který systematicky zpracovává téma figury a těla. Prošel klasickým školením na Akademii výtvarných umění v Praze u prof. Karla Nepraše. Z tohoto podhoubí pochází i černý humor, který neoddělitelně provází jeho práce. Skrytý humor, který vzniká přímo v každodenní realitě. Macko nevnímá tělo jako klasický archetyp nedotknutelné krásy, ale rozkrývá skrytá zákoutí lidské tělesnosti. Velmi neúprosně nastavil zrcadlo nám samým v cyklu „Kůže“ , který vznikl z šoku nad ztrátou veškeré humanity během holokaustu, (je paradox, že za toto dílo byl navržen na vyloučení ze školy za údajný cynismus). Cyklus „Věci“ se opět zbýva lidským tělem. Tělem, které je transformováno v předmět denní potřeby, v situacích zdánlivě neočekávatelných. Torzo mužského trupu, nikoli obligátního krásného svalovce, ale naditého břichu plného potravy coby nákupní „Taška“, „Koryto“ (tradiční předmět používaný při porážce prasete), nebo unavený mužský ležící akt coby forma na velikonoční pečivo- „Beránek“. V podstatě se jedná o nemilosdné autoportréty, mnohovrstevnaté ohledávání všednosti, častokrát končící úlekem nad sebou samým. Autor nevystavuje často, přestože jeho díla působí prostě a neokázale, jejich vznik a technologie bývá složitý proces, který vyžaduje dlouhý čas. Vždy jsou ale jeho prezentace místem nečekaných konfrontací a kontraverzí např.výstava Nesting v BWA Wroclaw s Benem Pettesonem ze skupiny Fluxus (USA) . Několik prací Jána Macka nedávno zakoupila Národní galerie v Praze, jeho sochy jsou součástí soukromých sbírek v Německu, Česku, s Slovensku a Polsku. Je spoluzakladelem uměleckých skupin A12 a Nowa skomnosc.
Ján Macko put his art works on show since 1991. He is a sculptor from wine-growing region of Southern Slovakia, from a municipality where descendants of Czech brothers - Hussites live; they settled down here in the 15th century and established a strong tradition of Protestant belief. Since his childhood, he lived in constant contact with family vineyard and his grandfather's joinery workshop where he learned basic skills in working with wood. He studied a secondary school in the field of metal working, so he started at AVU (Academy of Fine Arts) as a technically well-skilled student. Under guidance of prof. Karel Nepraš, one of the most distinctive Czech sculptors of the second half of the 20th century, he went through classical several year long study of the human figure, but he learned to experiment with new materials as well. Some of his art works are a part of the collection of the National Gallery in Prague, his sculptures are in private collections in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. He is a co-founder of art groups A12 and Nowa skromnosc. Black humour inseparably following his works is also grounded in Nepraš's school. Hidden humour arises directly in everyday reality. Macko does not perceive a body as a classical archetype of untouchable beauty; he reveals concealed niches of human corporeity. He mercilessly held the mirror up to us ourselves in the cycle “Kůže (Skin)” that originated in a shock at the loss of all humanity during the holocaust (it is a paradox that it was suggested to exclude him from school for alleged cynicism in relation to this art work). The cycle “Věci (Things)” deals with human body again. A body that is transformed into articles of daily use, in seemingly unexpectable situations. A torso of male trunk, not of a customary handsome beefcake, but of a paunch filled with food, as a shopping “Taška (Bag)”; or a “Koryto (Trough)”, traditional object used for a pig slaughter or for kneading of bread dough in the countryside of Southern Slovakia. Wooden outhouse “Pan Hajzl (Mr. Hajzl)” as an abstracted male nude; or a tired lying man as a cake pan for Easter pastry - “Beránek (Lamb)”. In essence, all these are merciless self-portraits, multilayered inspection of everydayness, which often ends up in dismay at oneself. The author does not put his work on show often, even though his art works look simply and are not spectacular, their formation and technology is usually a complex process that demands a long time. His presentations are always a place of unexpected confrontations and contraversies, e.g. the exhibition Nesting in BWA Wroclaw with Ben Petteson from the group Fluxus (U.S.).
