IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R Preface Hello Korfballworld, Less than eleven months before the start of the IKF WKC 2015 in Belgium. Time to send you an update. After the IKC EKC 2014 in Portugal the European participants are also known and the list of 16 countries is now complete. In this issue we go over the list with you. Did you know that there exists a korfball world cup ? You can read all about it in the next article. The organization comity is very busy and we are able to present you the different venues. Promotional campaigns have started and finally there is some breaking news from the Olympic front. As one can see more than enough to make the wait for the start a little more pleasant. Voorwoord Welkom Korfbalwereld, Er resten ons nog minder dan elf maanden voor het IKF WKC 2015 in België van start gaat. Hoog tijd dus om jullie een update te sturen. Na het IKF EKC 2014 in Portugal zijn nu ook de Europese deelnemers bekend en is de lijst van 16 landen compleet. In dit nummer overlopen we deze even met u. Wist u dat er ook een korfbal wereldbeker bestaat? U kan er alles over lezen in ons volgende artikel. De organisatie is al volop bezig en we kunnen u in deze nieuwsbrief ook al de plaatsen voorstellen waar alles te gebeuren staat. Ook de promotiecampagnes zijn al volop bezig. Tenslotte is e rook nog wat nieuws van het Olympisch front. U ziet het, meer dan genoeg om het wachten tot de start van het IKF WKC 2015 wat aangenamer te maken. Peter D’hollander KBKB

IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R THE WORLD KORFBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, THE QUEST FOR A CUP The World Korfball Championship will be held in Belgium in 2015. That’s why it may be a good idea to have a look at the history of the World Championship. Korfball is a sport based on the Swedish “Ringboll” and it was introduced in the Netherlands in 1902 by Nico Broekhuysen, a teacher from Amsterdam. Does this mean korfball has yielded a rich harvest of (Dutch) world champions? A world championship is one of the most important moments in any other sport. Look at football. Companies even introduce extra breaks, so that nobody has to miss one minute of the strife for the famous challenge cup, which used to be called “Coupe Jules Rimet”. Now it is simply known as “FIFA World Cup Trophy”. Every enthusiastic football fan can easily call this cup to mind. For the World Korfball Championship, though, the economy won’t be closed down for one second… WHEN DOES A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TAKE PLACE? When you ask an ordinary korfball player about the World Korfball Championship, he will probably tell you this championship takes place every four years and that the Netherlands have won practically all competitions. Correct answer! But when you ask the same ordinary korfball player which edition of the tournament will take place in 2015, he will pucker up his brows… The first world championship took place in 1978 in, oh yes, the Netherlands. In the meantime, we will celebrate the tenth edition in 2015. Indeed, a double lustre! The attentive mathematician will have realized that normally, the tenth edition should have taken place in 2014… And that’s right! After the world championship in 1984, the 4 year cycle suddenly became 3 years, and the next world championship was organised in 1987. And this second world championship was held in 1984, six years after the first edition…and that’s why it will be 2015 when we celebrate in Antwerp! Back to our ordinary korfball player. We ask him what countries traditionally participate in the world championship. The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and Chinese Taipei may, with a small hesitation, roll out of his mouth. But how did it all really happen? THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD KORFBALL CHAMPIONSHIP! I was surprised to see that, the first time the championship took place (in 1978), 8 countries participated. Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany and the United Kingdom along with Luxemburg, the United States and Spain. But the last team was even a bigger surprise: Papua New Guinea! These Papua Uitgave 2. IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R New Guineans won twice against Luxemburg and finished the competition at the 7th place. The Netherlands became world champion after a bloodcurdling final, which even needed extra time to determine the winning team. The Netherlands – Belgium: 14-13. You’ll never guess where the second world championship took place in 1984. Indeed, in Belgium! During this tournament, games were even played on the other side of the language boundary, in Louvain-La-Neuve. Again, 8 teams participated in the tournament, but this time there were two new teams: France and even Australia! The final was played by the teams of the Netherlands and Belgium and again came to a victory for our northern neighbours: 11-9. In 1987, we crossed the northern border again to participate in a new world championship with as many as two series of six teams. Again, some new names amongst these twelve competitors: Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Portugal and Aruba. In one game, the Netherlands managed to score as many as 28 goals (28-11 against France). The UK won 9-5 against Chinese Taipei for the third place (4-4 after the regular play time). The final was, once again, played by the Netherlands and Belgium. The Netherlands succeeded themselves as world champions after a 9-7 victory. We don’t know if the baskets were smaller or the balls bigger in that time, but high scores were never achieved during finals! 1991 is the year every Belgian korfball enthusiast remembers. Belgium became world champion after a blood-curdling game, entirely broadcast by the “BRT”. The score was 11-10 in the legendary “Arena” in Deurne, Antwerp. You would almost forget that also Aruba and Armenia participated in the competition. Would Belgium prolong its world title in India in 1995? For the first time, the world korfball championship was not organised in the “Low Countries”. Czech Republic, Slovakia and South-Africa had to travel all the way to India for their first participation in the world championship! Belgium had a record-score against the host country: 42-10, but had to taste defeat against “those damned Dutchmen” in the final: 13-21. The last world championship of the 20th century took place in Adelaide, Australia. Japan, one of the new participants, didn’t have to travel that far. However, Poland and Catalonia had to spend a lot of hours on the plane for their first participation. Belgium, again, crushed India with a super-score of 4714, but had to recover from a serious defeat in the final: 23-11. The Netherlands became world champion for the fifth time in 1999. Of the 16 countries that participated for the title in the Netherlands in 2003, only Hungary was a “new participant”. Nevertheless, they ended their first participation in the 9th place! IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R was played by Belgium and the Netherlands (for a change), once again confirmed the supremacy of the ‘Oranje-korfball’: 22-9. The 8th edition took place in the Czech Republic. Again, 16 countries battled for the title of “best korfball-country in the world”. Russia and China entered the field. China was the tail ender of this competition, Russia ended at a fine sixth place. You could have presumed that the Netherlands defeated Belgium in the finale: 23-10. China had the opportunity to organise the world championship in 2011. A tournament with a lot of goals. At the end of the competition, the Netherlands had scored 247 and received 106 goals. The Belgium team had also received 106 goals and scored 242 times… At the 29th of October, Belgium lambasted newcomer Hong Kong with 56-6. A score that would last in statistics for years…so we thought! The Netherlands managed to beat that score the same day against India: 60-11. And that during only 60 minutes of playing time. The Chinese people didn’t believe their eyes! The final of this world championship was played by, as you guessed, the Diamonds and the Tulips. A nice final with a lot of goals: 26-32. When you list all these championships, you notice that the “globalization” of the Korfball sport has been going on for quite some time. Who would have guessed that there were korfball players in Papua New Guinea in 1978? Europe has always been the main supplier of korfball teams and India and Oceania have also known korfball for a long time. Just like Northern Amerika. We only miss an African and a South- American participant. And also Antarctica hasn’t discovered korfball yet. Did you keep scores? 8 titles for the Netherlands. The title of 1991, with a Belgian organisation, was kept in the hands of the host country. And where are we playing in 2015? Right! THE TROPHY As I mentioned in the introduction, a lot of football enthusiasts can describe the World Cup Trophy. Can the korfball enthusiast do the same? The first question to be asked: “Is there a World Korfball Championship Trophy?” Let’s look around on the Internet: no information on the website of the Dutch or Belgian korfball federation. The new website of the IKF doesn’t supply any information, not even a photo of the most recent world champion. Google didn’t respond as I had wished to my search terms “world championship”, “korfball”, “trophy”, “cup”… The same goes for my search in Dutch. Next step: talk to some “korfball authorities”. The first answer: “No, there is no cup. The participants only get medals.” The following week the response had changed: there has to be “a trophy”, we have seen a picture of Vif Verbeeck with one from 1991! Then I googled something I can’t remember anymore and found a picture of Mady Tims in the outfit of the Tulips holding a trophy. Would there be a trophy after all? And would this be a challenge cup or just one that was purchased by the organisation? Exciting… On LinkedIn, you can find a group called “Linked Korfball”. Maybe I can post my question there? The day after, I received an answer from Ben Crum. The Ben Crum. “There is a challenge cup. You can find it at the office of the KNKV in Zeist”. I tried to contact the KNKV. And yes, it worked! Another day later, I received an email from an employee of the Dutch korfball federation: there is a challenge cup with the name “Nico Broekhuysen World Cup”. Oh yes, the same Nico that had introduced the sport of korfball in 1902. I even received a picture of it in my mailbox. On that same day, Kees Rodenburg (yes, the Kees Rodenburg!) responded to my linked-in question: “The Nico Broekhuysen challenge cup can be found at the headquarters of the Dutch korfball federation. In October, the trophy will (hopefully temporarily) be moved to Antwerp. This gold-coloured cup was offered to the IKF by the Belgian korfball federation KBKB in 1991, and has then spent four years with our Southern neighbours!” And yes! If we inspect the “Nico Broekhuysen World Cup” at close range, we can read that it was offered by the Royal Belgian Korfball Association in April 1991. IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R HET WERELDKAMPIOENSCHAP KORFBAL, DE STRIJD OM EEN CUP . Met het Wereldkampioenschap Korfbal voor de Belgische deur vond ik het wel eens interessant om in de Wereldkampioenschapsgeschiedenis van het korfbal te duiken. Een sport die, gebaseerd op het Zweedse Ringboll, in 1902 door een Amsterdammer met de naam Broeckhuysen in het leven werd geroepen, moet toch een rijke oogst aan wereldkampioenen opgeleverd hebben? Een wereldkampioenschap is één van de belangrijkste momenten voor eender welke sport. Kijk maar naar het voetbal. Voor een wereldkampioenschap voetbal worden zelfs rustpauzes in bedrijven ingelast zodat niemand ook maar één minuut van de strijd om de beroemde wisselbeker hoeft te missen. Ooit had die beker de naam Coupe Jules Rimet, maar de beker heet nu gewoon de FIFA Wereldbeker. Iedere voetballiefhebber kan het beeld van deze beker met één knip voor de ogen halen. Voor de strijd om het Wereldkampioenschap Korfbal zal de economie geen seconde stilliggen… WANNEER VINDT EEN WERELDKAMPIOENSCHAP PLAATS? Als je een doordeweekse korfballer naar het Wereldkampioenschap Korfbal vraagt, zal hij je wel weten te vertellen dat dit tornooi om de 4 jaar plaatsvindt en dat Nederland de grote schrokop is. Flink geantwoord! Maar vraag je diezelfde doordeweekse korfballer om juist te vertellen de hoeveelste editie in 2015 georganiseerd zal worden, zullen de wenkbrauwen in beweging schieten en zullen de voorhoofdsrimpels uitdrukkelijker zichtbaar worden. Het eerste wereldkampioenschap werd in 1978 georganiseerd in, jawel, Nederland. Ondertussen zullen we in 2015 de tiende editie vieren. Inderdaad een dubbel lustrum! De aandachtige wiskundig onderlegde lezer zal ondertussen al geopperd hebben dat wanneer je iets in 1978 voor de eerste maal organiseert en je dit met de regelmaat van 4 jaren doet, je uiteindelijk met een tiende editie in het jaar 2014 uitkomt… En dat klopt! Na het wereldkampioenschap in 1984 werd een 4 jarencyclus plots voor één keertje 3 jaar en werd het volgende wereldkampioenschap in 1987 georganiseerd. En in den beginne werd het tweede wereldkampioenschap in 1984 gestreden. Zes jaar na de eerste editie. En zo vieren we dus in 2015 in Antwerpen! Terug naar onze doordeweekse korfballer. We vragen hem welke landen zoal traditioneel aan dat wereldkampioenschap deelnemen. Nederland, België, Duitsland, Tsjechië, Verenigd Koninkrijk en Chinese Taipei zullen, mits een kleine aarzeling uit de mond rollen. Maar hoe is het nu allemaal écht verlopen? Uitgave 2. Jaargang 2. Groot was de verbazing om te zien dat bij de eerste organisatie (1978 dus) waarbij 8 landenteams aantraden, we naast België, Nederland, WestDuitsland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk ook de landen Luxemburg, Verenigde Staten en Spanje aantreffen.. En… grote verrassing, zelfs een team uit Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea stond ook op het korfbalveld! Deze Papoea-NieuwGuineeërs overwonnen tweemaal Luxemburg en eindigden zo op de 7de plek. Wereldkampioen werd Nederland na een bloedstollende finale waarbij er verlengingen aan te pas kwamen. Nederland-België : 14-13. Je mag 3 maal raden waar het tweede wereldkampioenschap in 1984 plaatsvond. Inderdaad in België. Er werd tijdens dit tornooi zelfs over de taalgrens, in Louvain-La-Neuve, gespeeld. Weer 8 landenteams streden voor de oppergaai maar nu met nieuwelingen Frankrijk en onze tegenvoeters; de Australiërs! De finale werd gespeeld door de teams van Nederland en België en draaide uit op een overwinning van onze noorderburen : 11-9. In 1987 gingen we weer onze noordelijke grens over voor een nieuw wereldkampioenschap met maar liefst twee reeksen van 6 teams. Onder deze 12 teams weer enkele nieuwe namen : Chinese Taipei, Indonesië, Portugal, en Aruba. Nederland wist zowaar in één wedstrijd 28 keer te scoren. (28-11 tegen Frankrijk) De strijd om de vierde plaats eindigde op 4-4. Na de verlengingen stond het 9-5 voor het Verenigd Koninkrijk en werd Chinese Taipei dus vierde. De finale werd gespeeld tussen de teams van Nederland en België. Nederland volgde zichzelf op als wereldkampioen. Hier eindigde de wedstrijd op 9-7. Waren de korven toen kleiner of de ballen groter? Echt grote scores werden in die finalewedstrijden niet gehaald! 1991 is hét jaar dat in iedere Belgische korfballiefhebbers geheugen gegrift staat. België werd na een super spannende wedstrijd, integraal uitgezonden op “den BRT”, wereldkampioen! 11-10 wezen de bordjes in de Deurnese Arena. Je zou haast vergeten dat ook Aruba en Armenië de weg naar ons landje vonden. Kon België in 1995 zijn wereldtitel in India prolongeren? Voor de eerste keer werd een wereldkampioenschap niet in de Lage Landen georganiseerd. Tsjechië, Slowakije en Zuid-Afrika kregen voor hun eerste deelname meteen stevig wat kilometers onder de neus geschoven! België haalde een stevige monsterscore boven tegen het thuisland : 42-10 maar moest in de finale weer het onderspit delven tegen die verdomste Ollanders. Was het beste kruit verschoten? IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R Het laatste wereldkampioenschap van de 20ste eeuw werd in Adelaïde, Australië georganiseerd. Japan, één van de nieuwelingen moest niet zo ver reizen, maar Polen en Catalonië mochten voor hun eerste deelname toch ook ettelijke uren in een vliegtuig vertoeven. België verpletterde Indië weer een keertje met 47-15 maar liep in de finale weer een stevige nederlaag op : 23-11. Nederland werd in 1999 voor de 5de keer wereldkampioen. Van de 16 landen die in 2003 in Nederland om de titel speelden was enkel Hongarije een nieuweling. Bij hun eerste optreden eindigden zij op de 9de plek! West-Duitsland was ondertussen omgevormd tot Duitsland, maar dat kon je moeilijk een nieuweling noemen. De uitslag in de finale, die voor de verandering eens tussen Nederland en België gespeeld werd, bevestigde de hegemonie van het Oranjekorfbal : 22-9 De 8ste editie vond in Tsjechië plaats. Weer 16 landen streden in 2007 om de titel van “beste korfballand van de hele wereld”. Rusland en China komen ten tonele. China ging met de rode lantaarn naar huis, Rusland eindigde onmiddellijk in de linkerkolom met een 6de plek. Dat Nederland België versloeg had u al wel vermoed. Weer 13 korven verschil : 23-10. China mocht onder het licht van de rode lantaarn in 2011 het wereldkampioenschap organiseren. Een tornooi met heel wat korven. Nederland had op het einde 247 gescoord en 106 korven geïncasseerd. De Belgische acht liet er evenveel tegenscoren en scoorde zelf 242 keer... Op 29 oktober slaagde België er in om nieuwkomer Hong Kong een 56-6 reuzepandoering te geven. Een score die wel enkele jaren de statistieken zou aanvoeren…. Maar dat was buiten de ploeg in het oranje gerekend die dezelfde dag nog India versloeg met 60-11. En dat tijdens 60 minuten speeltijd. De Chinezen trokken hun ogen open! De finale van dit wereldkampioenschap werd gespeeld door, u raadt het al, de Diamonds en de Tulips. Een mooie, doelpuntenrijke wedstrijd werd afgefloten op een 26-32 eindstand. Als je het zo op een rijtje zet, valt het wel op dat er van de “mondialisering” van de korfbalsport toch al heel lang sprake is. Wie had vermoed dat Papoua-Nieuw-Guinea al in 1978 korfballers had rondhuppelen? Europa leverde het gros van de ploegen en India en Oceanië kenden ook al korfballers. Net zoals Noord Amerika. Enkel een Afrikaanse en een ZuidAmerikaanse deelnemer ontbreken nog bij de deelnemers. En ook op Antarctica wordt nog niet gekorfbald. Heb je de tel bijgehouden? 8 titels voor Nederland. Die van 1991, een Belgische organisatie, bleef in handen van het thuisland! En waar spelen we in 2015? Juist, ja!



DE BEKER. Zoals ik in de inleiding aanhaalde, kan menig voetballiefhebber de wereldkampioenschapsbeker voetbal beschrijven. Zou de korfballiefhebber dit ook kunnen voor de korfbalbeker? Eerste vraag die je je dan stelt :”Bestaat er überhaupt wel een beker?” Even rondkijken op het internet op de websites van de Belgische Korfbalbond en de Nederlandse Korfbalbond leverde niets op. Op de vernieuwde website van de IKF vind je ook geen antwoord, zelfs geen foto van een wereldkampioen. Ook google reageerde niet zoals gewenst op de zoektermen “wereldkampioenschap”, “korfbal”, “beker”, “trofee”… Ook niet in ’t Engels… Dan maar wat korfbalkenners langs de korfballijnen aangesproken. De eerlijkheid gebiedt me te zeggen dat ik niet bij de jongste supporters ten rade ging… “Neen er is geen beker, enkel medailles worden aan de wereldkampioen gegeven”, was het eerste antwoord. Eén competitiewedstrijd verder kreeg ik dan toch het bericht dat er wel “een beker” moest bestaan, want…. op een foto van 1991 steekt Vif Verbeeck glunderend een beker in de lucht! Via een zoekterm die ik me niet meer herinner, vind ik dan een foto van Mady Tims die in een outfit van het Nederlandse team een beker in de lucht houdt. Zou er dan toch een beker bestaan? En zou dit dan een wisselbeker zijn of gewoon eentje die door de organisatie aangekocht wordt? Spannend… Op LinkedIn heb je een groep met de naam “Linked Korfball”. Misschien kan ik daar mijn zoektocht verder zetten? Een vraag gepost en dan wachten. De dag erna reageerde Ben Crum. Dé Ben Crum. “Er bestaat een beker en die staat op het bureau van de KNKV in Zeist” Op basis van Bens antwoord dan maar de KNKV via een contactformulier proberen te bereiken. En ja hoor, zo een contactformulier met ‘ticket’(…) werkt echt. Een dag later krijg ik van een medewerker een mail met het bericht dat er een wisselbeker bestaat met de naam : De “Nico Broekhuysen World Cup”. Jawel, diezelfde Nico die in 1902 de korfbalsport introduceerde. Ik krijg er zowaar een foto van meegezonden. Diezelfde dag reageert ook Kees Rodenburg (ja hoor, dé Kees Rodenburg!) op mijn linkedin-vraag : “ De Nico Broekhuysen World Cup is een wisselbeker die in de regel op het bondsbureau van het KNKV staat. IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R Promotie Recent ontving elke Belgische korfbalclub een WKC 2015 beachvlag. Deze wordt nu bij elke wedstrijd of elk event opgesteld. Op deze manier dragen alle clubs bij aan de promotie van het IKF WKC 2015. Bedoeling is dat de vlaggen begin oktober terug naar KBKB gaan waar ze zullen gebruikt worden voor verdere promotie. Promotion Recently each Belgian club received a WKC2015 beachflag. Those flags are displayed at each game or club event. That way every club promotes the IKF WKC 2015. In October all flags will return to the KBKB where they will be used for the further promotion of the WKC.




IKF WKC 2015 N E W S L E T T E R News from the Olympic front On the Olympic front things are moving fast for the moment. There is the recommendation to include mixed-gender team events in future editions of the Olympic Games and new sports are being introduced. Which sport other than korfball is a real mixed-gender team sport? IKF is working hard to get korfball on the Olympic games. We hope to get korfball on the Olympics in 2028. Nieuws van het Olympisch front Op het Olmypisch front werd van alles in beweging gezet. Er is de aanbeveling om gemengde teamsporten aan de toekomstige edities van de Olympische spelen toe voegen en er worden nieuwe sporten toegelaten. Welke andere sport dan korfbal is een echte gemengde teamsport ? IKF werkt dus hard om korfbal op de Olympische spelen te krijgen. Wij hopen dat er korfbal zal te zien zijn op de Olympische spelen van 2028
