The Unie magazine is published for the people suffering from a serious hearing impediment. It has been issued since 1992 by the Czech Union of the Deaf. It’s contents focuses mainly on those who lacked their sense of hearing before any language acquisition. It also aids to implement the Sign Language Law (No. 155/1998 Sb.) Apart from containing information about various organizations of the deaf and hard of hearing, it also supplies news from the world of those hearing people who work for the community of the deaf and hard of hearing. What appears to be popular as well is its Czech Sign Language Course. The deaf and hard of hearing themselves contribute to the magazine in the form of stories, their own experience and sport score reports. The magazine also presents various contests. What makes this monthly unique and different from others of its type is that it is chiefly the deaf ‘s and hard of hearing’s contributions that make it up. Thus the magazine makes for boosting the self-confidence of those individuals who suffer from the disorder. In 2001, the UNIE monthly was positively appraised by Milos Zeman, the Czech Prime Minister, for its popularization of the issues related the deaf and hard of hearing. Individual records and ads are well ordered and sorted by the date of entry. Activities: FRPSB is an association of parents, friends and professionals. It defends the interests of hearing-impaired children and their parents and helps them to overcome the impact of the handicap. Moreover, it strives after a successful integration of the hearing-impaired children in society and promotes smooth cooperation between the parents and professionals. FRPSB is a FEDEPA (European federation of parents with hearing-impaired children) member and its members participate in meetings of the parents of hearing-impaired children at the European level. Other activities: - running Deafness Information Center which provides information and counseling service to the hearing impaired as well as anyone interested in the issues all over the Czech Republic. The center also runs a specialized library housing more than 4 000 items (books, articles, translations, university textbooks, video cassettes and audio records) 40 per cent of which is foreign literature in its original language. Visitors to the library can also use archive materials (available only in the local study). - running Social Counseling Office dedicated not only to the parents whose children are hearing impaired but also deaf and hard-of-hearing adults. The counseling concerns particularly the areas of social benefits, governmental financial contributions to compensation aids, social benefits associated with the care of a deaf person and others. The Office also offers assistant services for the hearing impaired e.g. mediating contact between the deaf and state institutions. - running Special Psychological Advisory Service for the Hearing Impaired which provides psychological services such as school counseling, family and marriage counseling, psychotherapy, critical intervention, drug-abuse counseling etc. The Service is also engaged in publishing activities whose main objective is prevention. - Pottery Workshop

Tamtam Early-Care Center provides support for the families with small hearingimpaired children (up to the age of four) or those suffering from multiple impediments (up to the age of 7). It also assists the hearing-impaired parents in their care of small children and offers psychological, social and educational counseling. Other services offered by the Center are: paying visits to families, week-long rehabilitation stays organized for the whole families, speech-therapy counseling service, psychological, social and physiotherapy advisory services, arranging for specialized medical examinations, organizing meetings of the parents of the children suffering from the same handicap, organizing seminars for the parents, arranging for sing-language interpreting and information delivery. Activities: National Center for the Deaf is a non-profit organization that runs the FRPSP facilities such as classrooms, social and accommodation units, kitchen, dining room of the capacity of app. 150 people and common room.
