Get them in, move them up Engagement marketing is hot: een betrokken publiek is voor vele uitgevers de nieuwe heilige graal. Maar hoe kunnen uitgevers aan deze trend verdienen? Mediafacts selecteert de leukste (freemium) engagementmodellen. De Amerikaanse uitgeverij Meredith, die zich met name richt op magazines en websites over het gezin, huis en de psyche, weet naar eigen zeggen 100 miljoen vrouwen te bereiken. Community’s zijn waar het om draait bij de uitgeverij, en de afgelopen jaren is er hard aan gewerkt om deze community’s te versterken en met elkaar te verstrengelen, teneinde een enorm marketingvehikel te vormen waarin Amerikaanse vrouwen heel precies getarget kunnen worden.
Dan Hickey, in 2009 Sr. Vice President Digital Engagement bij Meredith, legt in bovenstaand filmpje uit hoe onder zijn leiding het grondwerk is verricht dat nodig was om de doelgroep klaar te stomen voor de introductie van social networking binnen de Meredith-domeinen.
Transformatie naar kennismerken
Het is interessant om te zien hoe verschillend uitgevers omgaan met omzetdalingen uit met name advertenties. Weekbladpers Media bijvoorbeeld is hard aan het werk om haar merken op nieuwe manieren in te zetten. Onder leiding van de nieuwe directeur Hylke van der Meer en Commercieel Directeur Ger Welbers (beide afkomstig van FD Mediagroep, red.) verandert de uitgeverij van een klassiek mediabedrijf naar een naar buiten gerichte, commerciële onderneming met, naast de mooie magazines, communityvorming en inhoudelijke expertise als voornaamste assets. Mediafacts sprak met Welbers over zijn plannen.

“We zitten nu midden in het proces van activiteiten benoemen per titel”, vertelt Welbers. “Ik kan er dus nog niet al te veel over kwijt. Maar het doel is duidelijk: we willen weg van alleen maar papier en inkt en sites. We willen veel meer overal aanwezig zijn. Dat houdt in dat we meer op social media gaan doen, maar we oriënteren ons ook op radio en tv.” Welbers licht enkele tipjes van de sluier. Op het Opzij-evenement ‘Top 100 machtigste vrouwen’ noemt hij “een waanzinnig event, maar het is jammer om hier maar één keer iets mee te doen. Er komt daarom een vrouwenclub voor de ondernemende vrouw.” Die zijn er al, beaamt hij. “Aansluiting bij een bestaande organisatie is niet uitgesloten. Maar wij zoeken naar een positionering die scherper is.”

Ditzelfde geldt voor andere plannen, zoals de uitbreiding van het merk Yoga Magazine, één van de bladen van Weekbladpers Media in het fysieke gezondheidssegment, waartoe ook Men’s Health en Runner’s World behoren. Of het nu om hardlopen, krachttraining of yoga gaat, grote sportmerken hebben hier al hun eigen, internationale community’s gevormd. Weekbladpers Media zal daar niet mee gaan concurreren. “Wij zijn niet zo van het ‘me too-verhaal’. De deskundigheid op die gebieden op de redacties gaan we aanbieden aan bedrijven. Die willen graag dat werknemers goed voor zichzelf zorgen, daar is yoga een goed middel voor. Wij gaan die bedrijven helpen om hun medewerkers enthousiast te maken voor gezond leven.” Daar is meer voor nodig dan het bestaande blad. “Yoga Magazine hebben we al, maar daar krijg je nieuwe mensen niet mee in beweging. We gaan daarom samenwerken met een

tv-productiebedrijf. Zo kunnen we onze kennis over yoga omzetten naar een totaalconcept, waarmee we yoga laagdrempelig maken en onze doelgroep kunnen verbreden.” Het raakt de kern van het bedrijf: “Het product is je communicatiedeskundigheid op een bepaald domein voor partijen voor wie dat een vreemde activiteit is, maar die wel die deskundigheid nodig hebben. We hebben hier waanzinnig talentvolle mensen, maar de focus ligt nog heel veel op bladen en websites maken. Ook op het gebied van social media hebben we nog een grote slag te maken.”

Elk merk vraagt om een andere aanpak. Zo krijgt Happinez een vervolg op het succesvolle Happinez Festival van 2012, maar moeten we hier niet direct revoluties verwachten: “Het is belangrijk om de activiteiten van Happinez heel zorgvuldig uit bouwen, met aandacht voor de inhoud. Happinez is een merk waar televisie goed bij zou passen. Maar er is al heel veel op dit terrein en de merkbeleving van Happinez luistert heel erg nauw. Onze stappen op dit terrein zullen daarom behoedzaam blijven.”

Happinez, Yoga Magazine, J/M voor Ouders, we kunnen ons vele commerciële toepassingen voorstellen. Maar wat te doen met opinietitel Vrij Nederland? Ondanks de verfrissende restyling in 2009 blijft het blad moeilijk met geld verdienen te associëren. Welbers ziet echter mogelijkheden genoeg. “In november deden we een oproep. We waren op zoek naar mensen die radicaal (maatschappelijk, red.) kunnen vernieuwen. Die oproep heeft 370 plannen opgeleverd. Op 6 maart houden we een feestelijke bijeenkomst waar we de beste plannen bekend zullen maken. Dat leent zich voor een veel bredere aanpak. Met partners, waardoor je meer ruimte hebt om zo’n actie vervolg te geven. Ook voor bedrijven zou je een concept als Radicale Vernieuwers kunnen inzetten.” “Bij BNR Nieuwsradio heb ik geleerd dat je programma’s kunt maken, onafhankelijk en interessant, en voor die formule commerciële partijen kunt vinden. Als je je doelgroep serieus neemt, wordt je automatisch aantrekkelijk voor adverteerders. Bij Weekbladpers Media hebben we hoogopgeleide, welvarende doelgroepen. Als je die onzin verkoopt, prikken ze daar zo doorheen. Commercieel gekleurde content is dus echt not done, maar begrip voor het feit dat je als uitgever inkomsten moet genereren is er zeker.” Kunnen andere uitgevers dezelfde weg bewandelen? Welbers twijfelt. “Onze merken staan allemaal ergens voor. In principe hebben andere uitgevers ook allerlei mogelijkheden. Maar het valt of staat wel met de kracht van je eigen merken. Met kleine, weinig aansprekende titels kun je dit niet doen.”

Content vanuit de community
Eenmaal een goed platform voor een bepaalde community opgebouwd, en je doelgroep doet de rest. Denk aan het Viva-forum, de reaguurders van Geenstijl en bijvoorbeeld restaurantgids Iens, waar gebruikers zelf de restaurantrecensies plaatsen. En vergeet vooral Fok.nl niet. Mensen vinden het blijkbaar heerlijk om te discussiëren en kennis te delen. Dat levert enorme hoeveelheden content op die, mits goed gemodereerd, hoog wordt gewaardeerd door lezers. Niet zo gek; want vaak betreft het vragen en antwoorden waar we naar op zoek zijn, niet die de redactie uitkiest om te behandelen. Hoe vaak bent u al niet op een forum terecht gekomen waar u nog nooit van had gehoord, omdat alleen hier een antwoord staat op de prangende vraag waar u al dagen mee rondloopt? Bij ict-site Tweakers.net, dat zich tegenwoordig breed oriënteert met ‘nieuws, reviews en prijzen van de laatste elektronicaproducten’, weet men er alles van. De enthousiaste community die de site in de afgelopen 13 jaar opbouwde reageert massaal op nieuws en recensies en in het forum voeren duizenden ‘tweakers’ gepassioneerde discussies over hardware, software en aanverwante producten. Discussies waar adverteerders zeer geïnteresseerd in zijn, en zij betalen Tweakers.net dan ook om deze threads te mogen analyseren met spidersoftware. Zo helpt de community niet alleen mee aan de autoriteit van het platform, maar vormt zij tegelijkertijd een reële inkomstenbron. In februari 2012 bezocht Mediafacts Tweakers.net. Social ROI
“Voor ons is het belangrijk om niet alleen op MSN.nl aanwezig te zijn”, aldus Merijn Aalbers, Head of Microsoft Online Media & Publishing. “Je moet gaan waar het publiek gaat en via verschillende social media kun je op allerlei momenten relevant zijn voor je gebruikers. Daarnaast willen we graag in dialoog zijn met hen. Om deze redenen investeren we in redactievoering en programmering van sociale media.” MSN.nl is een Nederlandse reus op Facebook met meer dan 115.000 likes, het grootste uitgeefmerk op het netwerk. De redactie is trots op dat aantal: “Iedereen kan fans krijgen door prijzen weg te geven en campagnes te voeren, maar het is een ander verhaal om die fans te bouden”, zegt Thessa Heijmans, senior editor & social media strategie. “Veel belangrijker dan de hoeveelheid fans, vinden wij het dat die fans daadwerkelijk betrokken zijn bij het merk en de content.”

De dialoog is het middel bij uitstek om betrokkenheid te creëren. Hier spelen social media een hoofdrol. “Via de website is de dialoog met je lezer wat lastig. Ja, daar hebben we ook commentaarmogelijkheden, maar op Facebook zijn we daadwerkelijk met personen in gesprek, niet met anonieme profielen. Bovendien komen we via social media in aanraking met andere doelgroepen.”
Van data naar veel meer omzet
Behalve betrokkenheid, levert interactie met het publiek allerlei interessante data op. “We houden goed bij hoe vaak iets wordt bekeken, gedeeld en geliked, maar ook wat wordt besproken. Zo krijgen we meer zicht op wat werkt en wat minder goed werkt. Soms vragen we aan de gebruikers wat ze willen dat we met een bepaald onderwerp doen. En als dat past bij wat onze redactie kan, doen we dat. Op die manier kunnen we het publiek betrekken bij de productie. Engagement, onder andere via social media, geeft ons de mogelijkheid om een 1-op-1 relatie op te bouwen met onze bezoekers.”
Actualiteit aanjager interactie Heijmans: “Deze foto postten we op de dag dat Barack Obama werd herkozen als president van de VS. We zetten hem ‘s ochtends vroeg op Facebook, vlak nadat Obama hem zelf via Twitter aan het publiek openbaarde. De viraliteit van deze post was zodanig, dat we er 600 likes per minuut op kregen. Uiteindelijk leverde deze post ons 27.461 likes op (op de post zelf), 362 shares en 358 comments. Het toont aan dat het niet alleen belangrijk is om te interacteren mét het publiek, maar ook om relevante content te brengen door in te spelen op de actualiteit en trending topics.”
Leuk allemaal, maar het klinkt ook wel een beetje als werk dat betaald wordt met likes, en daar smeer je geen boterhammen mee. Gelukkig zijn alle inspanningen niet voor niets. Heijmans: “Alle Facebook-berichten zijn voorzien van een link naar MSN.nl. Het levert dus ook traffic op. Daarnaast hebben we soms leuke acties samen met onze klanten, in verlenging van campagnes die ook op de site lopen. Ons grote bereik op social media is dus ook interessant voor onze adverteerders.” Als merkpromotor beginnen netwerken als Facebook zich steeds vaker cijfermatig te bewijzen. Onlangs gaf UPC een case study over de ROI van de Facebook-activiteiten vrij aan Marketingfacts.nl, met enkele interessante resultaten. Zo bleek het percentage promotors gestegen van 33% naar 56%. Interessant voor adverteerders: 28% van de respondenten zegt nieuwe diensten te hebben aangeschaft sinds zij UPC gingen volgen op Facebook. Vrijwel al deze respondenten gaven aan de aanschaf te hebben gedaan naar aanleiding van berichten op Facebook. Als dat voor televisieabonnementen geldt...
Flexibel afrekenen
Natasha Bloemhard, oprichtster en hoofdredacteur van het lifestyle-magazine Salt, verklaarde in 2010 al tegenover Publishr: “Met kleine marges, maar veel abonnees, druppelt de emmer ook vol. Steeds minder mensen willen een jaar vastzitten aan een blad. Daarom werken wij met kleine bedragen, korte abonnementsperioden en strooien we niet met buitensporige welkomstgeschenken.”

Nu, dik twee jaar later, heeft het idee zich vertaald naar een freemiummodel in de testfase. “De ouderwetse abonnementenstructuur is niet meer van deze tijd. Ik vroeg me af waar dat door komt. Het lijkt erop dat het de meeste mensen niet om de prijs te doen is, maar dat zij abonnementen zien als een aantasting van hun vrijheid. Ze zijn bang dat ze er nooit meer van af komen. Mensen willen tegenwoordig veel meer de regie in eigen hand hebben. Zelf bepalen hoe, hoeveel en hoe lang ze een uitgave willen ontvangen en op deze wijze ook direct invloed hebben op de prijs die ze betalen.”

De analyse dwong Bloemhard tot het bedenken van een nieuw businessmodel. “Er komt in april een nieuwe website, die geheel draait om het bouwen van de Salt community: get them in (gratis Salt account), move them up (betaald abonnement waarbij mensen geheel naar eigen smaak en behoefte hun abonnement kunnen samenstellen, plus interessante extra’s). Als geregistreerde bezoeker heb je direct al voordeel. Zo krijgen we de mensen binnen. Daarna is het natuurlijk de bedoeling om mensen zover te krijgen om abonnee te worden, maar de registraties vormen al een heel mooi verdienmodel richting adverteerders, want je kunt heel duidelijk laten zien hoeveel mensen zich aan jouw merk committeren.” Om binnengehaalde bezoekers te verleiden tot het nemen van een abonnement heeft Bloemhard een flexibel abonnementensysteem ingezet waarbij ‘de deur naar binnen net zo wijd open staat als de deur naar buiten’. “Behalve een flexibel abonnementensysteem moet je betalende klanten ook meer kunnen bieden en dingen vooral gemakkelijk voor ze maken. Door tijdgebrek en overdaad zijn we steeds meer op zoek naar eenvoud, gemak en overzicht. Dat probeer ik te geven, onder meer door het neerzetten van het platform en door samenwerkingen aan te gaan met partijen die direct aansluiten op de lifestyle van de Salt-lezer. Alleen al die partners zullen de moeite waard zijn om de stap naar een abonnement te zetten. Dat is het doel.”

Engagement IRL: de kracht van evenementen Wanneer we het over engagement hebben, denken we vaak aan social media. Maar het aantrekken en in beweging krijgen van doelgroepen kan ook prima via andere kanalen. Evenementen zijn ideale platformen om in contact te komen met uw doelgroep. Yves Gijrath, bedenker van de Miljonair Fair, zweert er bij.
Yves Gijrath lanceerde in 2000 de Miljonair Fair, een spectaculaire beurs met luxegoederen, ontstaan vanuit Gijrath’s in 1999 opgerichte tijdschrift Miljonair. Het evenement werd een succes en wordt nog altijd ieder jaar georganiseerd, al heet het sinds 2012 Masters of LXRY, genoemd naar het tijdschrift LXRY, zoals Miljonair sinds vorig jaar heet. Veel van de evenementen van GMG zijn complementair aan de doelen van de uitgeverij. Waar Masters of LXRY vooral een duidelijk op zichzelf staand product is met bijbehorende omzet, zijn de andere evenementen van GMG (o.a. LXRY Weekend, Jackie’s Best Dressed Award en JFK’s Greatest Man Award, red.) kleinschaliger en leveren ook minder inkomsten op. Toch zijn ook deze events belangrijk, meent Gijrath: “Ze genereren aandacht voor je blad en zorgen voor ‘readership committment’. Maar het is ook gewoon heel erg leuk voor de makers om betrokken te zijn bij gebeurtenissen die duidelijk zichtbaar zijn voor de buitenwereld. Je moet niet onderschatten hoe belangrijk dat is. Het geeft je organisatie de nodige dynamiek. Adverteerders waarderen het ook. Je wilt elkaar toch ook in levende lijve ontmoeten. Dat kan op die evenementen op een ontspannen manier.”
Ziel bepaalt succes
Veel uitgevers zien die voordelen van evenementen ook. Vooral in de periode 2000-2010 struikelde je over de evenementen, georganiseerd door uitgeverijen. Dat ging lang niet altijd goed. “Het is niet gemakkelijk om geld te verdienen met evenementen”, verklaart Gijrath. “Zeker de kleinere evenementen kosten vaak veel energie terwijl ze weinig geld opleveren. Je moet heel erg kritisch kijken naar je uitgavepatroon en dat moet je goed uitleggen aan je makers: van elk dubbeltje moeten we een kwartje maken.” Volgens Gijrath onderschatten uitgevers maar al te vaak waar ze aan beginnen: “Heel veel evenementen worden bedacht vanuit een spreadsheet. Maar ze kunnen alleen succesvol zijn als er een hele diepe ziel in zit. Een evenement moet herkenbaar zijn, je moet het maken omdat mensen er behoefte aan hebben. Dat hoef je niet statistisch te bewijzen, maar je moet het wél ‘weten’. De onderschatting uit zich vaak ook op organisatievlak. Hoe vaak zien we kleine uitgeverijen niet worstelen met een evenement, waar redactie, marketing en sales naast hun dagelijkse bezigheden keihard aan werken? “Heel gevaarlijk”, vindt Gijrath dat. “Evenementen organiseren is echt een vak, er zitten zo veel valkuilen in. Je hoofdredacteur kan bijvoorbeeld prima een ceremoniële functie vervullen, maar je moet hem geen event laten organiseren. Want dat is niet iets dat er zomaar even bij kan. De uitvoering is heel complex, heeft echt de tijd nodig. Het is onmogelijk om hele grote evenementen in een korte tijdspanne neer te zetten.”

Organisatoren kijken tot slot vaak jaloers naar de duurzaamheid van wat nu Masters of LXRY heet, maar in de volksmond nog wel even Miljonair Fair zal blijven. Hoe houd je een evenement fris genoeg om je publiek jaar na jaar te behagen? “In Nederland zijn we altijd heel erg gericht op iets nieuws. Na een jaar is het nieuwe er al weer van af en gaan we op zoek naar radicale vernieuwingen. Maar je moet ook koesteren wat je al hebt. Wij zijn met Masters of LXRY marktleider. Herkenbaarheid is een groot goed. Als je teveel gaat vernieuwen, verlies je die herkenbaarheid en zo ook je bezoekers.”
Promotie
Hoe krijgt GMG al die mensen ieder jaar weer naar de RAI? “Het is niet vanzelfsprekend dat de beursbezoeker ook abonnee wordt van Miljonair”, stelde toenmalig hoofdredacteur en uitgever Onno Aerden in 2010 tegenover Villamedia. Andersom geldt dan ook dat de abonnees van LXRY niet automatisch Masters of LXRY zullen bezoeken. Maar Gijrath beschikt over veel meer platforms om zijn beurs te promoten: vanaf de eerste Miljonair Fair wist hij als geen ander de media te bespelen. Met de inzet van charme, controversiële stellingnames en een zorgvuldig onderhouden netwerk werd de naamgever van de uitgeverij al snel een Bekende Nederlander. Een pad dat niet voor iedereen is weggelegd: “Het is een talent, je moet op tv kunnen geven wat de programmamakers willen hebben. Maar ook als je niet het type bent dat hier behendig in is, zul je iets moeten doen om invloed te krijgen in de media. We leven in een 100% mediatijdperk, waarin de media steeds meer lijken te bepalen wat er speelt in de wereld. De kunst is het om kritiek en lof niet persoonlijk te nemen.”
Die kunst is als koorddansen, en Gijrath ontkomt niet aan kritiek. Niemand kan de controverse rond Gijrath’s verdediging van kickbokser Badr Hari zijn ontgaan. Bovendien schreven Quote en Vrij Nederland aan het eind van het jaar ieder een vernietigend portret van de zakenman. Het is de schaduwkant van jezelf als promotiemiddel inzetten: “Je moet een balans zien te houden tussen positieve en negatieve berichtgeving, want alleen maar goede berichten is ook niet goed. Complimenten zijn natuurlijk leuk, maar teveel is klef en irriteert het publiek, dat daar dwars doorheen prikt. Maar ja, de balans is de afgelopen maanden wel heel erg naar het negatieve omgeslagen. Het is niet anders, je moet accepteren dat heel veel mensen een mening hebben en dat die mening kan omslaan.”
