From the desk of Ibu Katie Ya, kita sudah memasuki term 2! Mari kita kembali bersemangat lagi, sementara WSE (Eksekutif Seluruh Sekolah/Whole School Executive) tengah bekerja keras untuk menyelesaikan rencana Jangka Panjang 5 tahun sekolah.
Yes, it is already term 2! Now that we are back in full swing the Whole School Executive is working hard on finalizing our 5 year Long Term Strategic plans. The school has come a long way over the past 15 years but it is really important that we periodically examine what is working well, what needs to be improved and where we need to head in the future. A lot of work has already gone into this and information has already been gathered from the teachers and administration. One of our priorities is to focus on our Environmental Strategic plan. Many thanks to the keen parent involvement in recent weeks. Our new high school buildings are being put to good use. The new Sports Hall complex is a fantastic addition to our facilities. Once we have all the final work completed by the contractor and we are satisfied that all the details have been addressed and the building is in its best working state then we will hold an official opening! For the first time we are participating in a fun Fundraiser for the school, the Melbourne Cup! For those of you who come from Australia this is a well known phenomenon! If you want to join us for this on November 2nd then please come to the top office for a ticket, only a few are left and they are selling fast! Warm greetings to you all from a busy desk!
Bergegaslah!! Hurry! There are only 10 tickets remaining for the Melbourne Cup Fundraiser match. Please get your ticket in the office!

The students listened carefully to the explanation of Joko, a silkworm cultivation expert. SD Students Visit Sutera Sari Segara Agro Tourism Mangupura (Bali Post) Many SD Dyatmika Denpasar students visited Sutera Sari Segara Agro Tourism yesterday (Wednesday, Oct 13). Their visit, accompanied by several teachers, the trip was aimed at seeing the breeding process of silkworms. The owner of Sutera Sari Segara Agro Tourism, Nyoman Surya B Sc., explained that visitors can not only enjoy the mulberry garden, which serves as the food plants for the silkworms, but also see the silkworm feeding process. “We would like to introduce the cultivation of silkworms to children from a very early age. We hope the knowledge they gain here can be conveyed to anyone close to them, especially their family,” he added. Though it was just founded in 2008, the Sutera Sari Segara Agro Tourism at Sibangkaja Village, Banjar Lateng, Kecamatan Abiansemal, Badung, attracts hundreds of visitors each week, especially students from Bali or outside Bali. “Besides attracting visitors, we also hope this silkworm cultivation can attract other parties to develop similar businesses Frankly speaking, so far we’ve found difficulty to obtain enough cocoons for the silk material,” he said. He explained that silkworm cultivation provides promising business opportunities if taken professionally. Furthermore, Bali as a foreign tourists’ main destination is a very good place for such a purpose. “For the time being we can only meet the demands of the local market. The international market demands thousands of cocoons, which we can’t meet yet,” he added. Made Sukarsih, the manager of Sutera Sari Segara Art Shop which is located in the centre of the agro tourism said that after observing the cultivation of silkworms, visitors can view their end products in the form of weavings, kebaya, and accessories while enjoying some complimentary mulberry tea. Visitors can also directly see the weaving process of silk threads by ATBM (Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin/non-machinery weaving instrument). “Visitors can also try to do batik traditionally and produce batik patterns according to their wish,” she said. Sutera Sari Segara, said Made Sukarsih, provides a guided tour for visitors. The tour starts by having some brief explanation about silkworm cultivation and followed by field observation. “We hope the uniqueness of silkworms, which produce highly valued thread, will provide beneficial knowledge and experience to anyone,” she said. Meanwhile, A.A. Wulan, one of the teachers accompanying Dyatmika students, mentioned that the students will discuss their field observations and write a report in English after this agro tourism visit.

examination. Makassar International School is very keen to make links with Dyatmika so that they can enrol some of their students as private candidates for the examinations in 2010 – 11. Last Thursday, we had the rare opportunity to attend a live matinee production of the ‘Conference of the Birds’ being staged by Theatre Firefly as part of the Ubud Festival. This was even more engaging as one of the lead actors playing the ‘proud peacock’ was our very own Raditya in Class 10. He received the loudest applause at the end of the show from his loyal and supportive school friends. Over the next month, we will be conducting our November Cambridge examinations. I wish all students the best of luck with these challenging examinations.
[email protected]) dengan masukan Anda untuk upaya‐upaya pelestarian lingkungan, dan hubungi Carmen (Chair, PTFA;
Parents for the Green Team Effort Dyatmika is developing a 5‐year Environmental Strategic Plan, including curriculum, activities, a Green Team for students, and school waste management. Interested parents were invited to join the school’s Green Team meetings, along with concerned teachers, to contribute to this process. A small group of parents attended, and also held their own meeting on 11 October to get more parent input, and discuss ideas. Thank you to those who participated. Energy Use: According to an analysis by David Kuper, environmental expert, and uncle of Putu (6) and Kadek (3), almost 90% of school‐ related energy usage is due to transport of students to and from school. Another 8% is due to air‐conditioning (AC), with only 2% due to use of lights, computers, etc. So as environmentally concerned parents, we want to help facilitate the formation of more car‐pools or mini‐ bus groups to reduce the energy consumption (also reducing pollution and traffic!). Please contact us if you can be a “champion” contact for a mini‐bus group in the area where you live, or if you have spaces in your car to offer to others who live near you. Thank you to the Ubud group for leading the way in this initiative! And thank you to David Kuper for his detailed analysis, and initiative to work with the school and students on an up‐coming environmental audit of the school. Some other ideas and projects we are working on: •
Helping the school with waste management (especially at PTFA events) and advising on a new school composting system.
•
Supporting the Tetra‐Pack recycling program with the school as a collection point (please see information and reminders from the school).
•
Producing re‐usable water bottles for students, with school logo, to reduce use of plastic water bottles (at sporting events the students’ bottles can be refilled), also convenient carry‐bags, to reduce use of plastic bags, and to show that Dyatmika cares about the environment!
•
School vegetable gardens have been started in the Class 2/3 area; thank you to Pak Agus (father of Gede, Class 1). Perhaps the produce can be sold at bake sales? Pak Agus also has an organic vegetable business, please contact him to order (
[email protected]) and it is possible to arrange for delivery via school (to reduce transportation).
•
Find ways for Dyatmika to participate in and support local environmental events and campaigns.
•
Collaboration with farmers and their fields next to the school, to teach kids about rice farming and related agricultural and science issues, and to encourage use of organic methods, to reduce exposure of the school to pesticides.
•
Plans for parent contributions for the school Eco‐Fair planned for April 2011. Let us know your ideas!
Please contact Jane (mother of Samu, class 6, and Bayu, class 1:
[email protected]) with your input for the school environmental efforts, and please contact Carmen (Chair, PTFA;
[email protected]) or the school office for information on coordination of car‐pooling or mini‐bus groups. Thank you for caring for our environment and health! ********************
