ESI 2013 – Abu Dhabi, od 13. do 23. září 2013 Asociace malých debrujárů České republiky (AMD ČR), Senovážné náměstí 24, 116 47 Praha 1, Czech Republic
Za dobře odvedenou práci jsme přivezli Pohár Asie, medaile a diplomy. Účastníci: vedoucí delegace a projektu Libor Lepík, vedoucí projektu Jitka Soukupová, vedoucí projektu Ilona Křižáková, vedoucí projektu Miloslava Kuncová a účastníci Jakub Eduard Syřínek, Ondřej Gryžboň, Lucie Schaynová, Daniel Sůva, Hana Bártová, Kateřina Osmiková, Šárka Pomyjová, Jan Kunc, Pavlína Kuncová, Hana Kroupová a Pavla Václavíková na EXPO SCIENCE INTERNATIONAL v Abu Dhabi ve United Arab Emirates 13. do 23. září 2013.
výšku a čas přistání jsme celou dobu netrpělivě pozorovali v televizích visících nad našimi hlavami. 13. 9. 2013 - Rozespalí jsme si poslechli informaci o přistání, postřehli první změnu klimatu, prošli pasovou a vízovou kontrolou, skenerem očí a konečně nastoupili do autobusu ve směru Abu Dhabi! Člověk si přeje obléci klimatizovaný skafandr či skočit ihned do studeného bazénu. Byli zvědaví, příjemní a usměvaví.
Zavítala k nám i samotná velvyslankyně.
Nejdříve jsme navštívili ostrovy vystavěné do podoby palmy s dominantou Atlantis Hotel, pláž vedle hotelu připomínající plachetnici – Burj Al Arab, místní Mall s koberci zdobenými zlatem a drahokamy, projížďku kolem paláce zdejšího šejka a muzeum. Následovala plavba lodí, návštěva tržnice s kořením, zlatem, a nakonec návštěva nejvyšší budovy světa – Burj Khalifa. Poté jsme viděli fontánovou show pod touto budovou, procházka po přilehlém obchodním domě Dubai Mall kolem velkého akvária a nástup do autobusu zpět do Abu Dhabi na letiště. A pak domů.
Na nejrychlejší horské dráze v Abú Dhabí jsme jeli rychlostí 240 kilometrů v hodině, viděli okruh Formule 1 Yas Marina Circuit, navštívili Ferrari World, megalomanský zábavní park.

Ochrana vody vyžaduje vědecký výzkum, výchovu odborníků a informování veřejnosti. Without water there is no life. Water is very precious and irreplaceable for mankind. Water reserves run short. It is therefore necessary to maintain and protect water resources. A man must not pollute water to another man or other living organisms. The conservation of water resources has fundamental importance for plants, especially for forest. We must save water resources for our future generations. Water protection requires scientific research, educational experts and informing the public. The price of water must be recognized by all of us. It is the duty of every using efficiently and saving water. Water knows no borders-as a common resource for our life requires international cooperation. Water is a chemical compound that is all around us. It covers almost 70% of the Earth's surface and it makes up almost 70% of the human body. It is found in the solid, liquid and gaseous form. Water has incredible characteristics. In our experiments we discover and describe them.
Náš projekt se zabývá fyzikálních, chemických vlastností vody. Vysvětlíme: princip spojených nádob vodní nádrž, Leidenfrostův efekt, vroucí vodou za sníženého tlaku, zmizení vody, povrchové napětí vody, hodinky s vodotryskem, měření kapacity plic a další experimenty s vodou i bez vody. Představujeme roli úniku vody z containter. Vyřešíme problém analyticallly a pak ukážeme výsledky v praxi. Our project deals with the physical, chemical properties of water. We explain: the principle of the united containers - the water tank, Leidenfrost effect, boiling water under reduced pressure, the disappearance of water, surface tension of water, watch with a fountain, measurements of lung capacity and other experiments with water and without water. We introduce the role of water leakage from the containter. We will solve the problem analyticallly and then we show the results in practice.
Bude proveden výpočet a následně demonstrován. Draining of water from the container - Applications of differential equations 1) Reservoir hemispherical (halved ping-pong ball) of radius R is completely filled with water. In the bottom of the circular is hole of radius r where the water flows out. We numerically investigate, for what period of time after opening hole the reservoir is completely emptied. After calculations it will be demonstrated in practice and validated the correctness of the mathematical results. Deviations can initiate discussion of why the analytical calculations differ from practical. 2) The container in the shape of a cylinder (can cut or pet bottle) with height h and circular base of radius R is completely filled with water. 3) The container in the shape of a cylinder (can cut or pet bottle) with height h and circular base of radius R is completely filled with water. How high above the bottom of the container we have to do the hole, whence the water eject as far as possible on a horizontal plane on which the container is constructed? It is calculated and subsequently demonstrated. It will be shown how much water flows, if we create a hole above (or below) the optimal height of the hole. 4) Container frustoconical (bottle of the shape) with height h and radius of upper base R1, radius of the lower base R2, is completely filled. In the bottom is the circular hole of radius r where the water flows out. We numerically investigate, for what period of time after opening hole the reservoir is completely emptied. After calculations it will be demonstrated in practice and validated the correctness of the mathematical results. Deviations can initiate discussion of why the analytical calculations differ from practical.
5) The container formed by rotation of line around a vertical axis line (funnel) with height h and base of radius R is completely filled. We prepare show to village of Petit Debrujar Show: Wonder Water Number: for 40-50 people Total time: 20 minutes 1. WATER PRESSURE /2 minutes/ Water pressure depends, as our experiment shows, on the depth of water container. We need a bottle with three holes located in different heights. 2. WATER SEEKS ITS OWN LEVEL /2 minutes/ The level of the water in the funnel and in the glass tube will be the same because of atmospheric pressure. The same pressure is acting on the both things and that´s why the height of water is the same. We need a funnel, rubber tube and glass tube. 3. WHAT FLOATS /2 minutes/ An empty bottle floats on water surface but when you fill in the bottle with water it sinks deeper and deeper under the surface. The full bottle is diving. Objects float on water surface if they have lower density than density of water. They can float on or under the water surface or can touch the bottom. We need a container and three things with different density (things with density differ from or are equal to density of water). FLOAT A PENCIL /2 minutes/ In the water a pencil falls on the bottom of container. If you add salt, the pencil start to float higher and higher. Salted water is denser than normal water. We need a container with water, pencil, pin, salt. SURFACE TENSION /2 minutes/ An coin will float. The coin is denser than the density of water so that´s why the coin should fall down on the bottom of container. Or expectation is wrong, there is invisible elastic film on the water surface. We need a coin, container with water. Dokazuje to povrchové napětí vody. Minci (halíř) opatrně položíme na vodní hladinu.
6. THE LEIDENFROST EFFECT /2 minutes/ The Leidenfrost effect is a phenomenon. A liquid at a tin surface, which is much hotter than the liquid´s boiling poin, produces little droplets moving from place to place at the tin surface. We need a tin surface, burner and water. 7. CARTESIAN DIVER /2 minutes/ A Cartesian diver is a classic science experiment, which demonstrates the principle of buoyancy (Archimedes’ principle) and basic characteristics of ideal gas. We need a bottle, plastic tube and metal weight. Tento experiment demonstruje Archimédův zákon (vztlaková síla) a vlastnosti ideálního plynu. Jedná se o změnu hustoty nehomogenního tělesa (plastové brčko, kovové závaží – sponka, vzduchová bublina). Láhev, plastové brčko, kovové závaží – sponka. 8. DRY HANDKERCHIEF IN WATER /2 minutes/ Dry handkerchief in a glass turned upside down is after submersion into water still dry. Water cannot fill in the glass because the glass is filled by air. We need a container with water, handkerchief and glass. Tento experiment ukazuje, že ponoříme-li sklenici s papírovým kapesníkem dnem vzhůru do nádoby s vodou a pak ji opět tímtéž způsobem vytáhneme, kapesník bude suchý, protože, vzduch, který sklenice obsahuje, nedovolí vodě do ní proniknout. Sklenice, papírový kapesník, nádoba. 9. HOW MANY DIMES WILL IT HOLD? /2 minutes/ You can drop a surprising number of coins into the glass until the water flows out. It is made by surface tension, water will be higher than edge of glass. We need coins and glass filled with water. Tento experiment opět ukazuje sílu povrchového napětí vody. Vhazujeme-li do sklenice s vodou mince, vejde jich tam až překvapivé množství, než se voda přelije ven. Mince (těžší kovové), sklenice s vodou – po okraj. 10. DISAPPEARANCE OF WATER /2 minutes/ We let to disappear water in front of young scientists. We need a cup with double bottom. Necháme zmizet vodu před mladými vědci. (hrníček s dvojitým dnem) disappearance of water, much dimes in glass, dry handkerchief, cartesian diver, Leidenfrost effect, surface tension, float a pencil, density of material, water preasure, var vody za teploty v Abu Dhabi, Boil of water in Abu Dhabi temperature princip vodní nádrže - vodojemu, princip of container of water - water tank česká vlajka, Czech flag horkovzdušný balón, Hot air ballon otisky prstů, Fingerprints hodinky s vodotryskem, Watch with a fountain a další experimenty; and other experiments.
We believe that our experiments will be interesting and illuminating for participants. We are sure that we get to know young scientists with new characteristics of the most precious material in the World by the funniest form.
Physics can be fun Supervisor: Jitka Soukupová Little scientist: Daniel Sůva, Hana Bártová, Kateřina Osmiková, Šárka Pomyjová Category: Physics and Astronomy Popularization of science - physical project for kids and youth Young Debrouillards – Grammar School Stříbro - The Czech Republic It is very important when children and young people consider science and technology as interesting and fun. Popularization of science is an important motivator for children and young people. Our Club of Young Debrouillards at the Grammar School Stříbro is engaged in the popularization of science, chemistry, and physics since 2003. Association of Young Debrouillards Czech Republic was founded in 1992 on the basis of experience from Canada and France. Débrouillards word is of French origin. Formed from the verb se débrouiller, which means to discover and to adjective débrouillard, which is a translation practical. One of the very important outreach activities in science are physical, chemical and science competitions and projects for children and youth. In the most cases they are competitions with international participation. An integral part of the popularization of science are also various scientific festivals and exhibitions for children, youth and the general public. We participate on such events in the Czech Republic and abroad as well - not only as visitors, but also as exhibitors. At these festivals we meet new friends with similar interests and a lot of new ideas for experiments too. At the Expo Science International 2013 in Abu Dhabi, we have prepared a sample of our 25 most popular physical experiments, products and physical toys that we present to the public during project activities Physics can be fun. You can see us in the Village of Small Debrouillards with a Demonstration of physical experiments with beverage cans too. - 25 entertaining physical experiments and physical toys made of simple aids - 25 entertaining physical experiments and physical toys able to persuade both children and adults that physics is not only a science but fun as well - 25 entertaining physical experiments and physical toys that can be prepared and demonstrated in physics lessons by students themselves - 25 entertaining physical experiments and physical toys being a quick and cheap help for teaching of physics - 25 entertaining physical experiments and physical toys offering parents with children lots of researching and entertainment during leisure time ______________ 1. Water mill - Water going to the bottle displaces air through the straw. The air then turns the propeller
2. Floating object - Paper clips seem to be flying in the air, because there are magnets attached on the top of the box – the clips are attracted via magnetic force upward 3. Hand boilers - Inside the closed containers there is a liquid with low boiling point. When the hand with temperature of 36 degrees touches the container, the liquid starts boiling and increasing its volume – so it goes into the second part of the container 4. Tornado in a bottle - We need two bottle caps attached to each other, only with small hole through both of them, and two bottles. Fill one of the bottles with coloured liquid and attached it to the caps. The second bottle let empty and attach it to the caps as well. Then, turn the full bottle upside down. The liquid goes down slowly, because the lower bottle is full of air. If you rotate the bottle, there creates a vortex that helps the air get up in the middle of the stream and thus the liquid can get quickly down 5. Magnet in a coppery tube – coppery tube, marble, magnet – during the movement of the magnet through the tube, an electric field creates. According to Lorenz law, the field points the opposite direction compared to the magnet movement, and thus it slows the magnet down. the marble is falling free fall 6. Balloon and cup phones – two small paper cups, long party balloons, pump – the sound vibrates the elastic environment of balloon material, and is transmitted and amplified similarly to phone 7. Rain stick – mentos tube, rice or lentil, nails – during the fall of the rice through the nails, there is a rattling sound, which is transmitted via paper tube 8. Cylindrical mirror - This mirror makes deformed picture of an object. If we deform the object accordingly in the cylindrical net, the mirror makes non-deformed picture in squared net 9. Solar system – 2 photo film boxes, tape, coloured sticks – by rotating the system of boxes, due to the high frequency of the rotation and the inertia of human eye, the pictures looks continuous and reminds solar system 10. Turned text - Cylindrical water lens makes real turned picture. Some text doesn’t seem to be turned – but the reason is that some of the letters are axially symmetrical, so the turned and upright pictures look the same 11. Fakir balloon - If placed on one nail, the balloon would crack because pressure acts on very small area. While on the area of 50 nails, the pressure is spread on large area 12. Mysterious can - We need two empty cans, funnel and glass of water. Empty can has its centre of gravity in its centre, not touching walls, so if inclined, it falls down. If we pour some water into it, the centre of gravity is lower, at the place where can touches the table, so it can stand inclined on its edge 13. Kaleidoscopes - Kaleidoscope is made from three mirrors taken together under 60 degree angle. The picture we can see is a result of multiple reflections of all mirrors 14. Reactive ball – table tennis ball with straws – blow air into the ball from above; the air is going out of the ball through the banded straws, and according to action – reaction principle it rotates the opposite direction 15. Rotating propeller – paper windmill, tack, straw – blow with the straw into the centre of the windmill; the moving air gets under the blades of the windmill and makes the windmill rotate 16. Cupping – tea light, glass – place the tea light on a hand and cover it with a glass. The burning candle warms the air in the glass; the air expands and escapes out of the glass. After some time, the oxygen in the glass runs out, and the candle goes out. The hot air is cooling, its pressure decreases and an underpressure is created. The atmospheric pressure holds the glass on the hand 17. Water sprayers - we need straw, scissors, tape and skewer. Stab the skewer through the straw in its half, and then cut the straw from both sides in the thirds of its length. Bend the straw in the thirds
and glue it to the skewer, so that it makes triangle. By turning the straw, the water goes into it and due to the centrifugal force it gets out through the holes 18. Magnetic tenis balls - cut the balls in two, place magnets inside and close the balls again. The magnetic force is strong enough to act even through the balls, so the balls are attracting each other 19. Flying propellers - through the small holes above the propeller goes air escaping from the balloon; thus according to Bernoulli’s phenomenon, there is underpressure above the propeller and the balloon is displaced upwards 20. Tin can phone - we need two tins, scissors, two paper clips and a rope. The rope must be tight to transmit sound; the tins give the sound direction and make it louder. It is possible to connect even more phones – all the ropes must be connected and tight 21. Jumping Jack-in-the-box - by pushing the doll down the doll gets energy of elasticity. After releasing, the energy transforms into the movement energy and the doll jumps up 22. Stable figurines – the figurines has heavy legs, thus its centre of gravity is shifted to the place where the figuriness is supported, and it is stable 23. Moving acrobat – the acrobat has a groove in the body made of cork. Thanks the groove it can move on the thin cable or string. Due to legs loaded with marbles, it is in a stable position and cannot fall down 24. Zoetrope - cylinder with holes rotates quickly, and due to the inertia of human eye the individual pictures looks as if it is continuous film. It is necessary to look at the pictures through the moving holes 25. Cartesian diver – by pushing the bottle the water gets into the dropper that forms the body of the diver. The diver's density is greater than the density of water and the diver sinks. If you stop pushing the bottle, the water flows out of the dropper, diver’s density is smaller than the density of water and diver swims up Physical experiments with Coca-Cola cans The Village of Small Debrouillards - Demonstration of physical experiments with beverage cans Young Debrouillards – Grammar School Stříbro – The Czech Republic Beverage cans: - They are used for transporting of beverage and as a drinking container - We use them as a useful material for experiments in physics too - Modern beverage cans are made of one-piece cylindrical container from aluminium or tinplate and closed with an aluminium cap - The idea to offer drinks in cans dates back to 1933 in the USA - Current cans are much lighter than before. In the 30’s, the weight of can was approximately 100 g, currently one can weights about 25 g and the wall has a thickness of only 0.08 mm 1. Mysterious can - We need two empty cans, funnel and glass of water - Empty can has its centre of gravity in its centre, not touching walls, so if inclined, it falls down - If we pour some water into it, the centre of gravity is lower, at the place where can touches the table, so it can stand inclined on its edge 2. Thirsty can – We need empty can, diapers, funnel and glass of water - We fill the bottom of the cans with the inner material of the diaper - We pour water into the can and wait a few minutes - Then we turn the can upside down - Water does not flow out of can
- Diapers contain strong hydrophobic powder. In contact with water the powder converts to a gel 3. Cans in love – We need two empty cans and one straw - We stand or lay two empty cans very close to each other - Using straw, we blow air between cans - We will reduce the air pressure between cans and cans are pressed against each other 4. Rolling can – We need empty can and inflatable balloon - We put the can on the table - We rub an inflated balloon on our hair - We give balloon tightly to the can - The can will move for a balloon - If the balloon is close to the can, an electric charge is induced on the can. Because the can is not heavy, it is attracted via electrostatic force to the balloon 5. Stuck can – We need can with Coca-Cola, rubber wheel with centre hole - Thread the can through the rubber wheel - Place the wheel with can on the table and seal it up – push the air out from underneath the can - Now we try to pick up the can - It is not possible, as the rubber wheel is pushed by layers of air from the upper side - Atmospheric pressure force is 983 Newtons, it is as weights 100 kilograms or 221 pounds - If the air gets under the rubber, it is easily done, as the air pushes from both sides 6. Rotating can – We need empty can without lid, skewer and strong Neodymium magnet - We place the can on top of a skewer to the centre of the bottom lid - We make circular movements around the can - The can starts rotating - It is because of the electromagnetic induction - Lightweight can is rotating due to the induced electric current, which is created via the movement of the magnet over the can 7. Inflating glove on can – We need can with Coca-Cola, candy Mentos, glove, scotch tape - We put Mentos candy into a glove - We string glove on an opened can of Coca-Cola - We glue glove with scotch tape on can - We give the Mentos candy in can - Glove will be inflated, because the Mentos candy is wrapped in bubbles of carbon dioxide
Playful Physics Category: Physics and Astronomy Supervisor: Miloslava Kuncová Little scientist: Jan Kunc, Pavlína Kuncová Easy experiments for children from physics, chemistry and biology. We use the game to obtain new knowledge. • 11 easy and funny physical experiments 1) Magic boards – Kouzelné desky • We make 4 paper boards of size 15x10 cm. We also need 2 ribbons of lenght 15 cm, 2 ribbons of lenght 20 cm, glue, scissors and some picture.
• We glue the ribbons of lenght 20 cm crosswise to one paper board and the other ribbons to second board horizontally. We glue the other boards so as to hide the glued end of the ribbon. • We put a picture into the boards. One time is over the picture cross and the second time isn‘t. 2) Obedient cylinder – Poslušný válec • We need some cylindral vessel, ruber theard, matrix. • We fix the ruber theard with the matrix into the vessel. When we roll the cylinder away, it comes back. • WHY? – It is a law of conservation of energy. Energy of the elasticity changes in the kinetic. 3) Magical optical illusions – Magické oční klamy • We need CD, variations of paper interspersed images. • We spin the CD with images and our eye will see undivided image. • WHY? – It’s all about the inertia of the eye and that’s 0,1 s. 4) Balloon that doesen’t break – Balón, který nepraskne • We need a balloon and sharp skewer. • We piercethe inflated balloon and it doesen’t break. • WHY? - We use an oblong shape balloon and pierce it at the hole and place the opposite. The pressure inside the body is smaller at the top than at the sides. At the same time helps us the rubber elasticity. 5) The Lava Lamp – Lávová lampa • We need a glass with water, dye, salt, oil. • We use many kinds of density of our material, which makes a effect of lava lamp. 6) Robot – Robot • We need special construction kits. • Our moving robot is just a demonstration of teaching robotics in elementary school. 7) The center of gravity – Těžiště • We need paper images. • If we support the image in the centre of gravity, it is in ballance. • At the demonstration, we use also a set of nails. 8) Climbing animal or doll – Šplhající zvířátko nebo panenka • We need a paper image, string and reces of straw. • We glue strings on the backside of image and strech string. • We alternately pull for one and the other end of the string. Animal or doll starts to climb. • WHY? – It’s a composition of forces. 9) Centrifugal force – Odstředivá síla • We need CD, string, cup of water. • We make three holes near the edge and thread a strings and tie them. • We put a cup of water on CD and start to turn it. It doesen’t fall. • WHY? - When we appropriate equilibrium rotation is centrifugal force greater than the force of gravity.
10) Atmospheric Pressure, lifting Newspapers - Atmosférický tlak - zvedání novin • We need a newspapers, string and hard plate. • When we lift it slowly, we can lift the plate simply. However when we want to lift it quickly, it’s impossible. • WHY? – It’s a reset of atmospheric pressure. 11) The Magic Balloon Inflation – Magické nafouknutí balónku • We need a plastic bottle, water, ruber balloon, soda, lemon acid. • We mix all ingrediences together in the bottle and put a rubber balloon on it. The balloon starts to inflate. • WHY? – In the bottle appears oxid, that inflates balloon. Physics and chemistry for the smallest Supervisor: Ilona Křižáková Little scientist: Pavla Václavíková, Hana Kroupová Category: Physics and Astronomy Children meet physics, chemistry, biology and natural events through spontaneous form, and by this way they have been able to develop their interest in technical fields since their tender age. Electrical connection, wifi 1. Can a glass be really empty? At first sight, a glass looks empty. But something is inside a glass all the time. What you need: a glass, a bowl or vessel filled with water Turn the glass upside down and sink it into the water. Take the glass out of the water still holding it upside down. No water enters the glass and the glass is almost empty inside. Why? The air inside the glass prevents water from entering it and filling the whole inside of the glass. If you tip the glass a little bit, you will see air bubbles rising to the surface. This proves that the glass is not completely empty. 2. How much does air weigh? Air has certain weight and it also exerts pressure on things with which it is in contact. What you need: a glass of water, a piece of smooth, glossy and stiff paper or pasteboard Fill the glass with water to the top and then close it with the piece of paper. While holding the paper that covers the glass, turn the glass upside down carefully. Slowly let go of the paper. The paper will not fall away – it will stay in its place. Why? Air pressure works in all directions. The strength with which air presses against the paper from below is sufficient to keep the water in the glass. 3. Liquid sandwich. Many liquids look like water and can be easily mixed with it. But we can also find liquids which cannot be mixed with water. One of such liquids is oil.
What you need: water (coloured with ink), oil, glycerine, a bottle with a cork or cap Pour the same amounts of water and oil into the bottle. Close the bottle and shake the contents thoroughly. The oil will mix with the water but it will not stay this way for long. Soon an oil cover will form and float at the top. Why? In fact, the oil and the water did not really mix because their densities are different. This means that their weight is different, oil is lighter and it therefore floats at the surface. Another idea Try to add a different liquid. Pour a substance with high density, such as glycerine, into the bottle first. 4. Soap boat. The boat will have no sails or engine but it will still be able to move. What you need: a clean pan or bowl filled with water, wax paper, some liquid soap, a ruler, scissors and a pencil Cut a symmetric triangle from vaxed paper with the length of one side of 4-5 cm and the length of the other two sides of 8-9 cm. Put the triangle on the surface of the water. Put some liquid soap on your finger. Place the finger with the soap behind the shorter side of the triangle. The boat will start to float on the water surface. Why? The power between molecules at a water surface is higher that between molecules below the water surface. This causes surface tension and because of this tension, the water surface works as a thin membrane. When soap dissolves into the surrounding water, it releases oil particles which decrease surface tension and push the boat away from the place where you finger touches the water surface. 5. Sugar and soap used as propulsion. Soap can move things placed on the surface of water. Sugar can do the same but the movement of things will be different. What you need: a bowl filled with water, matches, a lump of sugar, a piece of soap Break the matches into small pieces and let them float on the surface of the water in the bowl. Place a lump of sugar in the centre of the bowl. This lump of sugar will draw the pieces into the centre of the bowl. Now place a piece of soap in the centre of the bowl. Soap will force the pieces to float to the edges of the bowl. Why? Sugar is porous and soaks up water. By this, it creates a stream which flows into the centre of the bowl and takes the pieces of matches with it. When soap dissolves in water, it releases oil particles which decrease the surface tension of the water and these particles also drive the pieces of the matches away from the centre of the bowl. 6. Telephone working without electricity. Sound can travel through air, as well as through liquids and solids. Through an old children’s game, we will see how sound spreads through solid material. What you need: two empty yoghurt cups, a pin, a long piece of string or wire Using the pin, make a small hole in the centre of the bottom part of the cup. Draw a string or wire through the hole and make a knot at both ends of the string. Stretch the string and put the cups to your ears. One of you will speak into the cup as if you were speaking into a microphone, the other one will be listening. You will be able to hear your friend clearly in the cup.
Why? The metal string can transfer sound waves from one end of the string to the other end. 7. Electricity in your hair. You can use your hair to make static electricity. What you need: a piece of string, two balloons, adhesive tape (Sellotape) Using the Sellotape, connect the two balloons together with the string so that the balloons are no more than five or six centimetres apart. Rub one of the balloons against your hair for a while and then let the two balloons hang on the string next to each other. First, the balloons will attract and afterwards they will repel each other. Why? By charging one of the balloons, you create attractive force between the two balloons. After the balloons touch, part of the charge in the charged balloon moves into the other balloon and the amounts of charge in the two balloons become equal. The balloons then start to repel each other. 8. Candle feeding on oxygen. Fire cannot burn without oxygen. If you cover a burning candle with a jar, then as soon as the oxygen is consumed, the candle will go out. Oxygen forms about one fifth of the air around us. Now, you will be able to see this. What you need: a candle, Plasticine, a small plate, food colouring, coins, a jam-jar, water Place the candle in the centre of the plate and use Plasticine to keep it upright. Put coins around the candle so that they form a base for the jam-jar. Pour water mixed with the food colouring into the plate to as high as the edge. Then ask an adult to carefully light the candle and cover it with the jamjar. The candle will go out after several minutes and the water level will rise in the jam-jar. Why? The flame of the candle consumes the oxygen inside the jam-jar. As the oxygen in the jam-jar is gradually consumed by this flame, its place is taken by the water from the plate. Finally, the water level will rise to about one-fifth of the height of the jam-jar. All oxygen will be consumed and the flame will go out. 9. Brain teaser with nails A brain teaser with metal nails – the nails will form something that resembles a roof and due to their weight, the nails hold together well locked by their heads. It is important that the centre of gravity of the structure is below the level of the horizontal nail which lies on the head of the hammered-in nail. The whole system is thus stable enough and won‘t fall. 10. Straws Straws – by blowing into the straw, we drive air inside the straw which escapes at the other, bent side of the straw and due to the action and reaction principle, the whole system starts to rotate in a direction opposite to the direction of the escaping air.
