Sártól, naptól, nehéz munkától » Mindannyian beleszülettünk a bárkába.

»The world of
János Eifert
» We were all born to live in the ark. Time is flowing with us like a river towards the other shore, and few of us are able to stop it. After photography was born in the nineteenth century together with the developing civilian life, many exclaimed so: „The art of painting has come to an end”. Time went on slowly and the art of painting did not vanish. „Photography stiffened time into an image” – the next sigh of anxiety came. Yes, indeed, in the course of documentary photography it did, when its role was to do so. But the photo-artist – although his camera often works with a fraction of a moment of time – creates the image with his own nerves and the machine is only an obedient servant in his hands. Remember the photos of János Eifert!
The dancers gliding past make you weave their steps and motions on and on in your mind. You do not even need to shut your eyes to hear the music and see the torrent of the revolving couples. The image Eifert captured in a photo is rolling, flowing, streaming on in you. You can feel that you are not alone any more. Running towards the other shore is not hopeless, because the other shore is rolling away. Have you ever seen one of his early photos: „The gardener’s hand?” Callous hands, encrusted by mud, sun and hard work are holding planted life like a protecting shield. It is a seedling, which will take the courage to fight against the destructive elements of nature in order to grow to be a productive plant. We do not know, whether it will be able to win its perpetual battle, but we have no doubt about its fate. With this plant time has stopped indeed. It was not the camera and not the master taking the photo of the image who has turned the river into a still lake, but the artist in
János Eifert, the artist composing in his heart and in his soul. He is the ark himself, and is able to retain those from the end who entrust themselves to him. This is the way his photos become eternal, and it is a merely matter of detail whether he takes this miracle with a modern Japanese camera or with an old-fashioned machine. It is thought that is important, which is materialized in the atoms of the perceptible world and became the truth of eternal validity. Dance, form and nature were transformed into his own world in him. His universe has no borders limited by time. It is endless like nature, which transforms and shows us mostly its miraculous faces, but it never fades. Works of art begin where man becomes an artist. The artist continues to exist where work of art becomes eternal. János Eifert does not see the world through the lens, but the world makes its way in front of his lens. The artist selects from the details in an artistic way. Digital photography and compu-
ter finish today helps a lot in photography, but artistic way of presentation reveals itself not only in work-out, but by intuition and choice, too. His individuality mostly shows in the perception of his surroundings and in the world he is able to build and exhibit out of it. This talent for creation is not his by accident. He was born in Hódmezõvásárhely, in the city where the way of thinking has been just the same for a thousand years. Where the Cumanians defeated in the battle of Hód-Mezõ (Hód-Plain) were not chased away, but were given land so that they could settle down; where the painter was not sent away from the farms, but the farmers offered him something to eat and when he made an exhibition of his paintings, they went to see it dressed in their Sunday best. So this is not just a talent but a valuable gift János Eifert was born with, and he makes a good use of his treasure for the sake of all of us. We are happy to greet him again here in his ho-
metown, whereto he comes every year. All that he has got from this land and from these people and has made world famous he now gives back to us. We reach for each other’s hands during this exhibition. We have been living together with him in the same ark this sixty-four years.

»His Surrealism André Breton once wrote: Surrealism is a dictation of thinking, without the verification of reason and it’s beyond all aesthetic or optical points. In other words: it favors the world of dreams, suspicions, visions over reality; it believes in the omnipotency of dreams, in Freud’s psychoanalytic theory that dreams denote our truer world, our undisguised ego... János Eifert experiments. In his newest, digitally rendered surrealistic composite photos he shows deterioration in a unique, never before seen way: our living space that’s breaking apart and the suffering man who’s getting lonely. He gives titles to his photos such as „Fractured pictures” or „Fright”. Titles like these also indicate this changed world which he depicts with dramatic force. Through female nudes the eternal Man, and the only provider of attachment to the Earth, reflecting the power of rising freedom, the storm bird offers János Eifert’s Ars Poetica which he shares with us. This also moves us, spectators through the losses of struggle, into the always wanted, but never reached world where our dreams persist.

»Ars poetica Számomra játék a fotográfia. A digitális képalakítás lehetõségei a fotográfus eszköztárát bõvítik. Ezekkel a lehetõségekkel én is igyekszem élni.

»Ars poetica Photography for me is a game, but a very serious one. It means to have a possibility to get a wider knowledge of the world, it means emotiona challenges and the freedom of expressing myself on my own visual language. I gethered on an immense archive during 40 years, subjects from 34 countries, from the american space-center to Tadj Mahal in India, portraits of artists, politicans, celebrities. There are press photographs, book illustrations, dokumentation and there are those pictures with special messages wich are difficult to fit in to any categories at all. They sometimes just happaned accidentally, but mostly are the results of researches, of experimentation of challenging different ways. These ideas are all supported by the creative possibilities of digital technic. I’m trying to make the most out of it as well.
