Summary (in Dutch) In oktober 2006 is deze pilot gestart met een eerste groep van 11 studenten en vervolgens in april / mei 2007 met een tweede groep gestart van 10 studenten. Deze studenten komen uit verschillende landen, o.a. Libanon, Zuid–Afrika en Japan. Het doel was om het samenwerkend leren te bevorderen en meer variatie in het onderwijs aan te brengen. Het betreft de cursus ‘GIS; een introductie’ van de masteropleiding GIScience1. Dit is een internationale MSc. opleiding voor professionals die in deeltijd en op afstand studeren. De pilot is een herontwerp van een bestaande opdracht, met gebruik van bestaande technologie. Het project gaat uit van een bestaande infrastructuur; Adobe Connect (voorheen Breeze) bij SURFNET. De studenten maken in kleine groepen de opdracht. De opdracht start met een kennismakingsbijeenkomst op het internet, waarbij ook de samenwerkingsopdracht door de docent wordt toegelicht. Een tweede contact tussen docent en studenten vindt halverwege de cursus plaats, wanneer de voortgang besproken wordt en de concept werkstukken van de andere groepen becommentarieerd worden. Uit de opgedane ervaringen en evaluaties na afloop van deze periode blijkt dat studenten met de nieuwe samenwerkingsopdrachten en door het becommentariëren van elkaar’s werk, een betere prestatie hebben geleverd. Ook de betrokkenheid en de motivatie van de studenten is verbeterd. Docenten en studenten van dezelfde intake kennen elkaar nu beter dan voorheen het geval was binnen dit afstandsonderwijs. In tegenstelling tot vroeger leveren de studenten hun papers op tijd in. Het meest opvallende is het plezier dat studenten hebben om samen te kunnen werken, en dat men zich deel voelt uitmaken van een studenten cohort. Dit blijkt ook uit de relatief grote opkomst van de eerstejaarsstudenten bij de UNIGIS-conferentie van afgelopen juni. De helft van de deelnemers aan deze conferentie bestond uit de groep studenten die deelgenomen hebben aan de pilot. De docent, die in oktober nog veel voorbereidingstijd nodig had voor de pilot, bleek in april 2007 hiervoor veel minder tijd nodig te hebben. De bedoeling is dat na deze geslaagde pilot de opdracht als een vast onderdeel in het curriculum opgenomen zal worden. Inmiddels is ook bekend dat het project een vervolg krijgt als nieuw EMP-project in het nieuwe academische jaar. Het project wordt verder uitgebreid met nieuwe technieken, maar zal ook worden uitgebreid naar andere vakken binnen de opleiding.

Introduction, design and goals
The current project has been approved by the internal VU tender (EMP 2006 - 2007) and links to two important themes of the tender: collaborative learning and distance education. The aim of the project is to improve the quality of education (collaborative knowledge construction and variation in education forms) of the master program in GISc (FALW/FEWEB) by introducing collaborative learning in distance education in the first module of the program (Introduction to GIS). The program is organized by the SPINlab (www.spinlab.vu.nl), the interfaculty centre of the VU for education and research on spatial information. The project uses the experiences in collaborative learning gained in project of the Dutch Surf foundation and the DU (Digital University, www.du.nl/cscl), as well as the collaboration between the VU and Windesheim. 1.1 Design The program starts twice a year, in September and in March. This gave us the opportunity to carry out the project twice. The Breeze2-sessions were held in October and November (intake September 2006) and in April and May (intake March 2007). Web sessions The students are divided in groups of 3 persons. Each group has two web sessions during the course with the tutor and group members. The first sessions is at the beginning of the course. The second session is two/three weeks later. Each session last one hour. The goals of the first web session are: let the students get acquainted with each other and with the tutor and explanation of the group assignment. It is also a moment for the students to ask questions about the course that ain’t clear. During the second web session each group have written a draft version of the paper. The tutor and the other groups comment on the group paper. One week later the final version is sent to the tutor. 1.2 Goals Results of the project are: - reformulation of the Module 1 assignment for collaborative learning - knowledge and experience with technological support for collaborative learning - testing the Module 1 collaborative work assignment with an international group of students (September/November 2006; March/May 2007). - dissemination of results Upon successful completion of the tests, the new assignment will be introduced permanently within the program.

Description of activities and results
2.1 Activities In paragraph 1.1 is explained how the design is of the web sessions. In this paragraph explains how the web sessions are performed. On October 4 and November 10 we realized each time four web sessions with the students of the UNIGIS intake September 2006. Breeze is software for collaborative working (webcam, voice, application sharing, chat, whiteboard etc. functions) which can be used freely from the SURFgroepen website. The students of the September 2006 intake were divided into four groups: 11 students from 7 countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Japan, South Africa, Netherlands, and Curacao). We repeated this procedure in April/May 2007 with the students of the March 2007 intake. On April 11 and May 9 we realized each time 3 Breeze sessions. This intake was divided in three groups from 4 countries (Lebanon, Rwanda, Zambia and Netherlands). On the first meeting (October 4/April 11) the students presented themselves to the other group members through demonstrating their own website. Also some appointments were made to address the Module 1 assignment 2, which is a group report (see annex). All groups commented on the draft report of the other groups at the second meeting (November 10/May 9) via Breeze sessions. All assignments 2 are handed in on time. During the first part of this project the tutor spent a lot of time to prepare, like testing the software, meeting the students before the sessions, making appointments with the students, getting to know the software, et cetera. All students were in time for the sessions. The total amount of time the tutor needed was 43 hours. For the second part of this project the advisory committee advised to make the preparations less intensive and reduce the amount of time. The tutor was meanwhile familiar with the software. There were no meetings planned with individual students in advance of the first sessions. This meant that the tutor only sent an invitation to the students at the start of the intake. This time the actual amount of time needed was 24 hours. The time investment decreased with 50%. Once more all students showed up at the indicated date and time. Also the papers were in time before the deadline passed.

Evaluation of activities and results
3.1
Working method
To evaluate a course in distance education digital resources are required. We used Formsite.com. Formsite made it possible to evaluate digitally. The form contained 16 multiple choice questions and 2 essay questions. 16 multiple choice questions: 1. The design of the assignment is to support computer supported collaborative learning. 3.2 Results Experiences In summary we have the following results. We start with positive points, followed by some points that needs improvement with the next performance. Positive results: - Collaborative assignment - Better results - Papers were handed in on time - Motivated students Improvement: - Collaborative writing environment - Decrease preparation time for tutor - Use of review formats Summary of questionnaire A summary of the results of questionnaire is that the students in general appreciated the collaborative learning part in the first module. Although the technique did not always cooperate, the students were creative enough to find other ways of communication. The

results also show that the students think they achieved better results due to the feedback of their team members. Only three students of the second group (April/May) answered the questionnaire. The answers are summarized in a table in appendix 6. They all agreed on the effectiveness of email, regularly providing feedback to each other, user-friendliness of Google docs and the sufficiency of the infrastructure. About the ICT-support they were neutral. The rest of the outcomes differ from each other. Furthermore we have the markings of the collaborative and individual papers the students wrote. A comparison between the September and March intake manifest different outcomes. The September intake performed better at the group paper than at the individual paper. The March intake performed reversed. These groups performed better at the individual paper than at the group paper (with the exception of one group).

Conclusion and en recommendations
4.1 Conclusion The assignment on collaborative learning is very good to start the program with, as students have to get started actively this way. There were no big problems; students know each other through these sessions and the assignment can be explained clearly and discussed. Also it is clear which students are lagging behind. Although it was an intensive investment, the overall perception of the reflections and evaluation of tutor and the students is that it is the goal of (computer supported) collaborative learning is achieved. The students actually liked to learn from and with each other, like a Community of Learners. Technical infrastructure The technical infrastructure (Breeze software, together with Skype) is adequate. The communication with Africa (with the exception of South Africa) was problematic. Although communication with Africa stays difficult, it is not impossible. For Ethiopia Skype worked fine. For Kenya a phone conference was established in the end, since other technical solutions did not work. For South Africa the combination Breeze and Skype proved good. The technical issues were solved, except for some problems such the problem with Microsoft Vista and the connection with Zambia and Rwanda. Differences in linguistic background of the students proved an extra challenge. These technical problems make the web sessions harder for the tutor to attend. Instead of concentrating on the meeting, she also needs to solve the technical problems. Despite of the delay it also made it harder if the sound is not working properly. Appearance at web sessions It is surprising that all students appeared on the date and time indicated. Use has been made of the International Time Converter to establish the meeting hours. Preparation time The first session required a lot of preparation from the project team. The second session went easier. It took 8 hours of preparation (including redesign of the assignment) and 2 times 8 hours of breeze sessions. The tutor got experienced in the software, whereby the preparation time is reduced increasingly. Educational quality In all, the educational quality improves a lot, there is a lot of student – tutor and peer-to-peer (P2P) interaction: not only during the session, but also before and after the sessions by Skype or e-mail. The students indicated that they have learned a lot from each other’s approaches. This collaborative learning is more time consuming for staff and students, than the regular UNIGIS distance learning approach. UNIGIS conference A positive experience was during the UNIGIS Conference in Amsterdam in June 2007. In total 30 persons attended the conference, of which half of them were of the first year (14 students). Only three students of the first year could not come. At workshop two, 16 students participated of which 14 of them were from the first year. Even before the conference started students met each other. For example a Dutch student guided another student through Amsterdam (with whom he collaborated during the group assignment). When you compare these numbers to the numbers of 2005-2006, the difference is clear. In total 24 students attended the conference in June 2006. Only 6 students, who were studying in their first year, participated the conference. That is 25%. In total 15 student studied in the first year. Workshop 2 was participated by 15 students, of which 6 students were of the first year.

4.2 Recommendations This project was evaluated after the first part of the project. It has resulted in a mid term report. Based on this report and his results the faculty wants to participate again in EMPprojects. The proposal is approved. Next year this project will expand. The project will take place in a more international setting. Supplementary to the dissemination section, describe in the project proposal 2007-2008, could be dissemination at an international conference, such as Online Educa (Berlin), EDmedia (Canada) or Educause (VS). Also the project can participate during the Big Meeting UNIGIS (9, 10 and 11 November 2007). In addition to the questionnaire during the UNIGIS conference in June 2008 interviews can be organized to gather extra information about the experiences of the students with collaborative learning in distance education. At the same time, Nuffic wants to evaluate their e-learning pilot with the African students as well.

1. Projectbeschrijving 1.1 Samenvatting Hoofdkenmerken: Dit voorstel sluit aan bij twee thema’s van de EMP ronde, namelijk samenwerkend leren (thema “Onderwijsvisie VU”) en afstandsonderwijs (thema “Doorlopende leerlijnen”). Het voorstel heeft betrekking op het versterken van samenwerkend leren op afstand binnen de masteropleiding GIScience (Geographical Information Systems and Science) van FALW. De opleiding wordt verzorgd vanuit het SPINlab (www.spinlab.vu.nl), het interfacultaire centrum van de VU dat zich bezig houdt met onderzoek en onderwijs op het gebied van ruimtelijke informatie. Doelen: het project beoogt het verbeteren van de kwaliteit van het onderwijs (gezamenlijke kennisconstructie en afwisseling van werkvormen) door middel van het introduceren van samenwerkend leren op afstand bij één van de cursussen binnen de masteropleiding GIScience. Opgedane ervaringen bij SURF, de DU en op de VU/Windesheim zullen vertaald worden naar en toegepast worden binnen de context van het GIScience onderwijs (o.a. mid-career professionals en deeltijd onderwijs). Beoogde resultaten: implementatie van een opdracht binnen de cursus “GIS een introductie” (zie bijlage voor voorbeeld), gebaseerd op samenwerkend leren in combinatie met afstandsonderwijs. De opdracht zoals die er nu ligt wordt onderwijskundig herontworpen (indien mogelijk samen met de partners aan de Universiteit van Salzburg, Oostenrijk), en technologisch beter ondersteund, en toegepast op een internationale groep van studenten in de periode september – november 2006 en nogmaals in maart – mei 2007. Bij positief resultaat zal het SPINlab in de toekomst zelf in staat zijn het samenwerkend leren op afstand te integreren in overige cursusonderdelen van de opleiding. Op te lossen problemen: Het versterken van samenwerkend leren binnen de GIScience opleiding lost twee problemen op: 1. het huidige gebrek aan gezamenlijke kennisconstructie. Uit de “leerpiramide” van Bales3 blijkt immers dat het grootste leereffect (80%) optreedt wanneer studenten zichzelf onderwijzen door stof aan elkaar uit te leggen (zie ook figuur 1). 2. het eenzijdige karakter van de huidige werkvormen. Uit literatuur blijkt dat variatie en differentiatie in werkvormen studenten stimuleert. 3

1.2 Aanleiding De masteropleiding GIScience bestaat uit twee varianten: een voltijdse variant die van start zal gaan in september 2007, en een deeltijd variant. We beschikken over ruim 12 jaar internationale ervaring met het masterprogramma GIScience, met name het onderwijs gericht op afstandsonderwijs voor zogenaamde ‘mid-career’ studenten. Dat zijn studenten die reeds werkzaam zijn bij overheid of bedrijfsleven, en die daarnaast in hun vrije tijd én in deeltijd op afstand aan de VU studeren. Deze variant is gebaseerd op een lichte vorm van ‘blended learning’ in de zin dat alle studenten, ook die uit het buitenland, voor één week per jaar bijeen komen op de VU voor de jaarlijkse conferentie. Tijdens deze conferentie werken studenten samen in groepen aan opdrachten. Daarbuiten werken de studenten individueel aan de acht cursussen binnen het programma, die alle min of meer dezelfde werkvorm hebben; namelijk het schrijven van meerdere essays (een theoretische en een praktische) per cursus. Elk jaar starten er zo een 20 studenten met de opleiding, die aan het eind van hun studie bij voldoende resultaat het MSc. diploma van FALW ontvangen.4 Als opleiding zijn we ons ervan bewust dat het samenwerkend leren bij afstandsonderwijs van groot belang is, en dat we dat binnen de opleiding moeten versterken. Deze behoefte komt voort vanuit diverse factoren. Ten eerste uit evaluaties bij de huidige studenten. Bij evaluaties van het programma onder studenten komt steeds meer naar voren dat ze het samenwerken buiten de conferentie missen. Afstandsonderwijs is te veel een individuele aangelegenheid voor de studenten. Ze missen contact over de lesstof met mede studenten (gezamenlijke kennisconstructie) en ze missen een afwisseling in werkvormen binnen het programma. Dit wordt door hen als een probleem ervaren. Ten tweede komt deze behoefte voort uit ervaringen met samenwerkend leren elders opgedaan en de rol van ICT hierbij. Nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de ICT die dit ondersteunen zijn allerlei vormen van groupware, zoals aan te treffen op de SURF website www.surfgroep.nl (onder andere het Breeze project), de DU website www.du.nl/SALDO (het SALDO project, gebaseerd op het Handboek “Samenwerkend Leren Digitaal Ondersteund”, juni 2004), het project “Samenhangend gebruik van ICT in de opleiding Gezondheid en Leven, Zwolle’, en de ervaring bij FALW met samenwerkend leren met een internationale groep van professionals5. Binnen dit project willen we van deze ervaringen gebruik maken en toepassen op het GIS onderwijs. Ten derde heeft de STOK, de commissie die advies uitbrengt aan het College van Bestuur van de VU over accreditatie aanvragen, opgemerkt dat in de aanvraag van de masteropleiding GIScience het onderdeel samenwerkend leren nadere concretisering behoeft. Tenslotte komt de behoefte naar voren wanneer we de programma onderdelen van de opleiding bezien in het licht het didactisch concept. Bij de deeltijd variant hanteert 60% van het onderwijs een zelfde didactisch concept, namelijk het schrijven van individuele essays. Kenmerken van wetenschappelijk onderwijs6 zoals het vakoverstijgend wetenschappelijk kunnen samenwerken en het verder ontwikkelen van communicatieve vaardigheden die verband houden met de wetenschappelijke oriëntatie komen in de huidige opzet te weinig aan de orde. Met samenwerkend leren op afstand hebben we reeds testen uitgevoerd in het onderwijs, met zowel positieve als negatieve resultaten. Sommige studenten vonden het een interessante leerzame ervaring om met internationale collega’s aan een opdracht te werken; andere studenten raakten gefrustreerd doordat ze in hun planning van hun onderwijsactiviteiten nu rekening moesten houden met medestudenten en hierdoor soms studievertraging opliepen. En vanuit de opleiding was er te weinig expertise om het samenwerkend leren op afstand didactisch goed op te zetten en voor te bereiden, en met de juiste ICT te ondersteunen. Deze testen hebben daarom geen vervolg gekregen. We zijn er van overtuigd dat wanneer een opdracht voor studenten gebaseerd op samenwerkend leren goed wordt voorbereid (inhoudelijk, organisatorisch en technisch), dat dit een duidelijke toegevoegde waarde zal betekenen voor de opleiding. In deze EMP ronde vragen we onderwijskundige en technische ondersteuning aan voor samenwerkend leren op afstand binnen de masteropleiding GIScience. We zullen voortborduren op de ervaringen die hiermee zijn opgedaan bij SURF, bij de DU, bij de VU zelf en bij de samenwerking tussen de VU en Windesheim.

De deeltijd variant van de opleiding is reeds eerder door het college van de VU geaccrediteerd. Op dit moment bevindt de masteropleiding GIScience (beide varianten) zich in de accreditatie procedure van de NVAO. Wat betreft de snelle internet verbinding die samenwerkend leren op afstand veronderstelt, merken we op dat verreweg de meeste studenten over voldoende internet capaciteit beschikken, vergelijkbaar met de Nederlandse situatie. De meeste studenten uit het buitenland komen ook uit westerse landen als Engeland en Oostenrijk, Een enkele student, zoals een student in Ethiopië, zal niet beschikken over een voldoende snel netwerk. Vanuit de opleiding zal zo een student organisatorisch ondersteund worden om toch aan de pilot mee te kunnen doen. Specifiek wordt dan gedacht aan de mogelijkheid dat een student voor de tijdstippen van de interactie tijdens de pilot, ondergebracht kan worden in een computercentrum met voldoende internet capaciteit of zal een andere oplossing gezicht worden. Uiteindelijk zijn we ervan overtuigd dat binnen afzienbare tijd alle studenten over voldoende internet capaciteit zullen beschikken. Destijds hebben we binnen de opleiding immers ook bepaalde hardware en communicatie vereisten ver plicht gesteld voor toelating tot de opleiding. Gezien de aard van de opleiding, het hoge ICT gehalte, is dat op termijn zeker een goede mogelijkheid. Uiteraard verwachten we enkele technische en organisatorische problemen: bijvoorbeeld aspecten met firewall waardoor Breeze niet zou kunnen werken; en het verlenen van ivm.vu.nl emailadressen aan bijvoorbeeld de buitenlandse studenten van partner universiteiten die betrokken worden met het samenwerkend leren. We zijn ons hiervan bewust en houden er rekening mee in de planning. 1.3 Doelstellingen Dit voorstel past binnen de onderwijsvisie van de VU. Het sluit aan bij twee thema’s van de EMP ronde, namelijk samenwerkend leren (thema “Onderwijsvisie VU”) en afstandsonderwijs (thema “Doorlopende leerlijnen”). Binnen de faculteit is al eerder ervaring opgedaan met samenwerkend leren in het project “Samenhangend gebruik van ICT in de opleiding Gezondheid en Leven, Zwolle’, en de ervaring bij FALW met samenwerkend leren met een internationale groep van professionals (olv. B. Kooijman). Dergelijke ervaringen willen we toepassen op de masteropleiding GIScience. Deze opleiding bevindt zich momenteel in het accreditatieproces, waarbij de VU intern (STOK) gesignaleerd heeft dat het samenwerkend leren binnen de opleiding nader uitgewerkt dient te worden. Voor de VU zijn nieuwe doelgroepen, zoals professionals, interessant, alsmede het vergroten van de flexibiliteit van het onderwijs. Doelen: het project beoogt het verbeteren van de kwaliteit van het onderwijs (gezamenlijke kennisconstructie en afwisseling van werkvormen) door middel van het introduceren van samenwerkend leren op afstand bij één van de cursussen binnen de masteropleiding GIScience. Opgedane ervaringen bij SURF, de DU en op de VU/Windesheim zullen vertaald worden naar en toegepast worden binnen de context van het GIScience onderwijs (o.a. mid-career professionals en deeltijd onderwijs). Specifieke doelen: opzetten van een opdracht gebaseerd op samenwerkend leren op afstand als onderdeel van de eerste cursus van de opleiding;verhogen samenwerkend leren in curriculum. Door deze methode in het begin van de studie te introduceren wordt gelijk reeds een basis gelegd voor de gezamenlijke kennisconstructie; Verhogen afwisselende werkvormen in curriculum. Het enigszins eenzijdige aanbod aan werkvormen wordt eveneens doorbroken door in het begin van de studie deze vorm aan te bieden; De staf van de opleiding doet concrete ervaring op met de technische, organisatorische en didactische aspecten van samenwerkend leren op afstand; Op langere termijn zal de staf van de opleiding zelfstandig in staat zijn de pilot uit te breiden in het curriculum, zodat er structureel meer variatie is in werkvormen en er meer gezamenlijke kennisconstructie in het curriculum zit. 1.4 Afbakening Het project richt zich op het uitvoeren van onderwijskundig en technisch verantwoorde testen met samenwerkend leren op afstand voor de cursus “GIS; een introductie” van de master opleiding GIScience. Het gaat om het herontwerp van een bestaande opdracht, met gebruik van bestaande technologie. We streven ernaar dat de test bij 80% van de studenten (bij een gemiddelde instroom van 20 – 25 per jaar) uit te voeren. Tevens is de docent van de cursus nauw betrokken bij het project, alsmede de master coördinator en de verantwoordelijke hoogleraar, ondersteund door administratieve krachten (secretariaat en student assistentschap). 1.5 Resultaten Het project is duidelijk geoperationaliseerd, realistisch en haalbaar. In termen van SMART: Specifiek: herontwerp bestaande cursusopdracht “GIS; een introductie” (zie bijlage) bij de studenten die starten met de opleiding in het cursusjaar 2006 (in september 2006 en maart 2006; de opleiding kent namelijk twee intakes per jaar). Meetbaar: het samenwerkend leren wordt geïntroduceerd in de eerste cursus van de opleiding en speelt zich af in de periode september – november; en vervolgens in maart – mei. De ervaringen van de studenten zullen geëvalueerd worden aan de hand van vaste items. Aanwijsbaar: in het project zullen de rollen duidelijk verdeeld worden. De opleiding zelf brengt het inhoudelijke team in (docent, coördinator, hoogleraar, ondersteuning); en verder wordt onderwijskundige inbreng gevraagd voor het begeleiden van het herontwerp van de opdracht rond samenwerkend leren en het uitwerken van de consequenties voor begeleiding en beoordeling. Technische ondersteuning wordt aangevraagd voor de ICT ondersteuning (bijvoorbeeld Breeze). Realistisch: Over samenwerkend leren is binnen de VU reeds veel ervaring opgedaan o.a. binnen het project SALDO (Samenwerkend Leren Digitaal Ondersteund, Er wordt aangesloten bij deze ervaringen opgedaan tijdens het SALDO project, bij peer review projectervaringen, en de positieve (en negatieve) ervaringen met Breeze vanuit FALW. De noodzakelijke expertise is bij FALW en het Onderwijscentrum aanwezig. Tijdgebonden: looptijd is vanaf september 2006 – september 2007.

1.6 Facultair commitment Het draagvlak vanuit de opleiding is groot. De opleiding wordt verzorgd vanuit het SPINlab, wat ressorteert onder FEWEB en FALW. De betrokken hoogleraar, prof. dr. H.J. Scholten is elke week beschikbaar des vrijdags; de docent van de opleiding, drs. R. van Wilgenbrug, is samen met de student assistent, dhr. J.M.W. Schalkwijk, 8 uur per week beschikbaar gedurende de duur van de testen; de coördinator van de opleiding, drs. M.A. Molendijk, is beschikbaar 4 uur per week. Het secretariaat, drs. A. Rooseboom, is beschikbaar 8 uur per week gedurende de volle duur van het project. De medewerkers zijn enthousiast over onderhavig projectvoorstel en zullen van harte meewerken. We gaan ervan uit dat 80% van de studenten van het collega jaar 2006 – 2007 mee zullen doen aan de test (totale instroom is meestal 20 – 25 studenten). Het project is urgent voor de opleiding, gezien het accreditatie proces waarin het zich bevindt; en gezien de aanhoudende vraag bij studenten voor samenwerkend leren voor gezamenlijke kennisconstructie en afwisseling van werkvormen (zie 1.2. Aanleiding). Implementatie-activiteiten van de projectresultaten: wanneer het herontwerp van de opdracht met samenwerkend leren in de praktijk succesvol is gebleken, dan zal de opdracht als een vast onderdeel in beide varianten van het het curriculum opgenomen worden. Vervolgens zal de opleiding zelf onderzoeken in hoeverre samenwerkend leren in andere cursussen geïmplementeerd zal worden. Het project gaat uit van een bestaande infrastructuur (zoals Breeze bij SURF7). De scholing van de betrokken medewerkers vanuit de faculteit zal plaatsvinden tijdens het project zelf (didactische en technisch; ‘on the job’ tijdens de uitvoer van het project); dat moet voldoende zijn om de resultaten blijvend te laten beklijven binnen de opleiding. De ICT kennis binnen het SPINlab is hoog.8 1.7 Onderwijskundig kader Hier project sluit aan bij het onderwijsconcept van faculteit en universiteit (Onderwijsvisie van de VU, 14 dec 2005): “Learning community” is immers onderdeel van het VU beleid (zie thema’s EMP). Ook draagt het project bij aan een betere kwaliteit van het onderwijs (meer gezamenlijke kennisconstructie en grotere diversiteit aan werkvormen; zie leerpiramide en verder paragraaf 1.1.). 1.8 Kwaliteit Een gebruikersevaluatie maakt onderdeel uit van het project. De resultaten hiervan worden teruggekoppeld naar de projectdoelstellingen, en maken deel uit van de eindrapportage. Het uitvoeren van de opdracht met samenwerkend leren zal twee keer geschieden. Het samenwerkend leren wordt twee maal geëvalueerd: zowel bij de september 2006 intake als bij de maart 2007 intake. De evaluatie van de september intake wordt beschouwd als de voormeting voor de maart 2007 groep. Onderdelen van de evaluatie zijn: onderwijskundig, organisatorisch en technisch. Gezien de studentenaantallen is de evaluatie kwalitatief van karakter (bijvoorbeeld schriftelijk en mondeling tijdens de jaarlijks UNIGIS conferentie in juni 2007). Onderwijskundig: Wat verandert er op onderwijskundig gebied wanneer je samenwerkend leren ondersteund door ICT integreert in bestaande onderwijsactiviteiten? Subvragen daarbij zijn bijvoorbeeld: Hoe verandert de voorbereiding van het onderwijs? Hoe verandert de uitvoering van het onderwijs? (effect op de interactie; op de rol van de docent; op de leeractiviteiten) Welke voor- en nadelen ervaren docenten en studenten? Ervaren studenten en docenten een meerwaarde en zo ja, welke? Welke ideeën of wensen hebben docenten en studenten ter verbetering? Organisatorisch: wat verandert er in de organisatie wanneer je samenwerkend leren op afstand ondersteund door ICT integreert in bestaande onderwijsactiviteiten. Subvragen zijn bijvoorbeeld: Hoe beoordeel je de studenten? Hoe begeleid je studenten? Hoe vorm je groepen? Zijn studenten en docenten tevreden over de ICT ondersteuning? Technologisch: Wat verandert er op het gebied van technologie wanneer je samenwerkend leren op afstand ondersteund door ICT integreert in bestaande onderwijsactiviteiten? Subvragen zijn bijvoorbeeld: Is de bestaande groupware adequaat voor het samenwerkend leren bij de opleiding? Hoeveel is de groupware gebruikt? Was de bestaande infrastructuur voldoende? Werkt de software naar behoren? (Welke problemen deden zich voor?) Wat is het oordeel van de gebruikers over de gebruikersvriendelijkheid van de apparatuur en de applicaties? 1.9 Disseminatie Kennis opgedaan in het project wordt via een eindrapport ter beschikking gesteld aan anderen. 7
In het kader van het project "Digitale Leerinfrastructuur VU" wordt het deelproject "Pilots videoconferencing" uitgevoerd. Dat project heeft tot doel te bezien of Breeze voldoet aan de eisen en wensen die de VU aan het gebruik van videoconferencing in het onderwijs stelt. De ervaringen met zijn tot nu toe positief. Zo heeft ALW in het kader van het ICT&O-project "Samenhangend gebruik van ICT in de opleiding Gezondheid en Leven, Zwolle" in het studiejaar met succes gebruik gemaakt van Breeze (als onderdeel van de samenwerkingsomgeving Surfgroepen). Studenten hebben daar zowel op de campus van de VU en Windesheim, als ook vanaf de thuissituatie van Breeze gebruik gemaakt. Als Breeze voldoet aan de eisen, zal het systeem op den duur concernbreed worden aangeboden. De ervaringen van het EMP-project "Samenwerkend leren op afstand" met Breeze kunnen mee worden genomen in de evaluatie van het systeem. 8
Ook zal het project met interesse gevolgd worden door de masteropleiding ‘Environmental Resource Management’ van FALW (IVM Graduate Studies) met het oog op de bruikbaarheid van samenwerkend leren op afstand voor het alumni beleid; en als onderwijsmiddel in het kader van Erasmus Mundus aanvragen.

Verder worden de resultaten bekend gemaakt via de facultaire website, via de facultaire nieuwskrant en via de internationale UNIGIS website (www.unigis.net). Wat betreft disseminatiebijeenkomsten wordt gedacht aan: de UNIGIS Conferentie in juni 2007 (‘afsluitende bijeenkomst’) SURF Onderwijsdagen 2007 Presentatie bij ICT contactpersonen overleg (mn FALW) Presentatie voor SPINlab Presentatie voor Graduate Studies Team IVM. Voor het project zal een intranet omgeving gecreëerd worden (Sharepoint), waarop het Onderwijscentrium VU de voortgang in de gaten kan houden.

Ook is er behoefte aan didactische tips rond beoordeling en organisatie om de kans op meeliftgedrag van studenten te verkleinen. Hiervoor zal geput worden uit de ervaringen van het SALDO project, waarbij te denken is aan ‘slimme’ formulering van de opdracht waarbij groepsleden zelf rollen verdelen, zo afhankelijk zijn van elkaars inbreng, en zelf de verantwoordelijkheid hebben en voelen medegroepsleden aan te spreken op meeliftgedrag. Bij het opzetten van zo’n ‘slimme’ organisatie, b.v. ook met tussenopdrachten en organiseren van beoordelen van mede studenten, kan goed worden geput uit de ervaringen in het project SALDO. technische voorbereiding (Breeze?) van de implementatie van samenwerkend leren; monitoring en evaluatie. 3. There is a staggering array of GIS related resources on the Internet. Some Web sites offer excellent, high quality resources created by professionals in the field, whilst others are disappointing in their coverage and depth - or because they don't seem to be accessible due to 'construction work' or due to 'changes of address'. For this exercise you need to select a topic from the list below (note that there are some spaces if you would like to add you own topic to the list). Then work with one or two other students on the course to search for Web sites relevant to that topic area, and review their content. The theme is spatial data handling technologies. Use the student centre to find one or more students in your intake who have interests in your chosen topic. To do this send an email to introduce yourself, and ask for partners to research a particular topic. There should be a two or three students in each group. If there are lots of students interested in a particular topic then split into two or more groups and try to find different sources of information. If you cannot find anyone else with an interest in your topic area, you should switch to another topic where there is interest from other students. (If you have trouble finding a partner, contact the module tutor)9. Once you have your partner(s)10, email each other directly, rather than by using the mailbase discussion list. You can also find our more about each other from the home pages you have posted. Each group member should then find about 5 useful web sites on your particular topic, and write a short paragraph reviewing the level (beginner, expert, etc.), content and usefulness of each one. It should deal with site navigation, quality of materials, ease of use, currency, consistency, completeness, etc. Your partner(s) should read your Web site reviews, and then visit your sites, and add to the review. You should also review their list. Between you, rank the sites you have into a 'top ten', then link these, with your reviews of them as an html page(s) to your home page. In setting a 'top ten' you should specify the criteria you use and the 'scores' of individual sites. You should then write an individual report11 of no more than 2500 words which introduces and defines the topic, outlines the criteria you have used to rank the sites, lists the sites in rank order with a short paragraph evaluating each site. Conclude with comments on the relationship of the topic to GIS and the usefulness of internet resources compared to, say, the course textbook. Links to some general sites to get you started are provided on the course web pages on the UNIGIS site

Bij het herontwerp van de opdracht zal meer aandacht besteed worden aan de groepsindeling, naar ervaringen opgedaan hiermee bij FALW en het Onderwijscentrum. In de huidige opzet kan dit proces erg tijdrovend zijn. Door bijvoorbeeld van tevoren groepen in te delen, strikte deadlines te hanteren en goede begeleiding van de docent zal de opdracht beter werkbaar zijn.

Dit is uiteraard een vrij ouderwetse manier van samenwerken op afstand. We verwachten dat we door het gebruik van moderne ICT ondersteuning (bijvoorbeeld Breeze) hier een enorme verbetering in kunnen aanbrengen. Ook moet bij het herontwerp goed gekeken worden naar de beoordeling. Overwogen kan worden een groepsrapport in te leveren.

Purpose: In this first unit we discuss what GIS is and point out that fundamentally a GI System only truly exists as an actual application. Deliverables: 1. Getting started with assignment 2 To work on the group assignment 2, we suggest that you try google docs for working together on the group paper. 1. Go to docs.google.com 2. Create an account at Google (I suggest the ‘chairperson’ of your group opens the google account: for group 1 – Ghassan Ghattas; for group 2 – Paul Benjaminse; for group 3 – Peter Venema) 3. Open a new document 4. Invite your group members as collaborators 5. Invite your teacher/tutor as viewer 6. Learn more: Take a tour of Google documents & spreadsheets NB Take care that when copying a google document to a word document (in order to hand in the assignment), the lay out changes! So don’t use google docs for the final lay out of the assignment. For google docs, it is not necessary that you work at the same time on the document – you can work at different times on the same document. Mid Term Report ‘Collaborative learning in distance education’ Content: Project Characteristics Summary and progress Time investments Conclusion and next steps Project characteristics The current project has been approved by the internal VU tender (EMP 2006) and links to two important themes of the tender: collaborative learning and distance education. The aim of the project is to improve the quality of education (collaborative knowledge construction and variation in education forms) of the master program in GISc (FALW / FEWEB) by introducing collaborative learning in distance education in the first module of the program (Introduction to GIS). The program is organized by the SPINlab (www.spinlab.vu.nl), the interfaculty centre of the VU for education and research on spatial information. The project uses the experiences in collaborative learning gained in project of the Dutch Surf foundation and the DU (Digital University, www.du.nl/cscl), as well as the collaboration between the VU and Windesheim. Results -
of the project will be: reformulation of the Module 1 assignment for collaborative learning knowledge and experience with technological support for collaborative learning testing the Module 1 collaborative work assignment with an international group of students (September/November 2006; March/May 2007). dissemination of results Upon successful completion of the tests, the new assignment will be introduced permanently within the program. Summary and progress On October 4 and November 10 we realized each time 4 Breeze sessions with the students of the UNIGIS September 2006 intake. Breeze is software for collaborative working (webcam, voice, application sharing, chat, whiteboard etc. functions) which can be used freely from the SURF website. The students of the September 2006 intake were divided into four groups: 11 students from 7 countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Japan, South Africa, Netherlands, Curacao). On October 4 they presented themselves to the group via demonstrating each ones website. Also some appointments were made to address the Module 1 assignment 2, which is a group report (see annex). On November 10, all groups commented via Breeze sessions on the draft report of the other groups. All assignments 2 are handed in on time. The results of the assignment is still not known. Reflections The assignment on collaborative learning is very good to start the program with, as students have to get started actively this way. Problems in getting started are solved; students know each other through these sessions and the

assignment can be explained clearly and discussed. Also it is clear which students are lagging behind. The technical infrastructure (Breeze software, together with Skype) is adequate. It is surprising that all students appeared on the date and time indicated. Use has been made of the International time converter to establish the meeting hours. The communication with Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya was problematic. For Ethiopia Skype worked fine. For Kenya a phone conference was established in the end, since other technical solutions did not work. For South Africa the combination Breeze and Skype proved good. The first session required a lot of preparation from the project team. The second session went easier. In all, the quality of the education improves a lot, there is a lot of student – tutor and student-to-student interaction: not only during the session, but also before and after the sessions by Skype or email. The students indicated that they have learned a lot from each other’s approaches. This collaborative learning is time consuming for staff and students. A summary of the results of questionnaire is that the students in general appreciated the collaborative learning part in the first module. Although the technique did not always cooperate, the students were creative enough to find other ways of communication. The results also show that the students think they achieved a better results due to the feedback of their team members. For more details: see attachment 4. Time investments The project is being carried out by two persons: Gert-Jan Los (educational centre VU) and Mathilde Molendijk (SPINlab, module 1 tutor). Anne?? The studens actually liked is to learn from ánd with eachother. We look forward to improve the technical issues and reduce the problems for the next student-group in march 2007. We’d like the advice of this commission in what the next step UNIGIS could be, for instance for Salzburg and Manchester could be. There is a conference planned in Salzburg in june 2007. Comments I had difficulties connecting to breeze & l could not download Skype from my end, though l have managed and l think it works fine. l haven’t used-it with my group mates on the assignment, but since l have tested-it l think it will be a nice one when we start on the next stage. Teleconference was very perfect. In my group we didn't communicate via MSN nor skype. The communication means we often used was e-mail. However, I personally had regular chat with my tutor on skype. Internet was not fast enough to enable downloading of breeze software on the day we were making presentation. So, I could not use it, but managed to download it on the next day. This makes me hope that probably next time communication via breeze will be possible. There collaborative learning assignment was rather difficult to work on. First of all there is a time difference of 6 hours (later it became 5). Sometimes there were calls during office hours which is almost infeasible. When working on the assignment it was rather difficult to make an appointment and we always had to deal with delays on reactions from each other. Another thing is that my broad band internet had difficulties when the webcams were activated. Even though I got an impression to work with Breeze I unfortunately did not get a chance to really use it. I think it's a good way of learning. But probably that is also depended of the group your in. I liked it a lot! What I learned about is that article can be read in many ways. Some things that were obvious to me, were not for the others, and opposite. I had to fill in Members communicate effectively by telephone and MSN. But we didn't use them so I don't know. I chose for both neutral. Internet in South Africa is expensive and slow so Breeze not possible, even Skype difficult. Total Number of Responses 8 Improvement - It would help me to have a little more help to learn to use and find digital resources (sciencedirect e.g.) I mean, this is for many students the first time that they do such research and it took me a lot of time to find a quick way, searching for scientific resources and articles. Submission date for assignment 2 and 3 was on the same day. I think the two assignments should have been submitted on different dates so as to leave a space for good concentration on each one. Student groups should be in the same time zone or the time difference should be taken into consideration. The way we did it, it was really time consuming. Because of the time-difference it was also difficult (not impossible) to arrange the appointments. I think we spook each other 5 times(without Mathilde). The success of collaborative learnings depends very much on the capacities and time schedules of the individual members. It could be a good instrument if the members really want to use it. After the assignment members don’t continue communication, since there is no necessity or they are too busy with themselves.
Improvement: If you focus on the different parts, maybe you can find some improvement: 1. organizational issues (teamwork), 2. ICT structure/communication, 3. contents.

Appendix 7: Dissemination A. Good Practice-Idea http://goodpractices.surf.nl/gp/gp_idee/386 Samenwerkend leren op afstand in het GIS-onderwijs (afb. unigis) Achtergrond GIS staat voor Geographical Information Systems. De masteropleiding GIScience van de VU bestaat uit twee varianten: een voltijdse variant en een deeltijd variant. De deeltijd variant gebruikt afstandsonderwijs voor zogenaamde 'midcareer' studenten. Dat zijn studenten die reeds werkzaam zijn bij overheid of bedrijfsleven, en die daarnaast in hun vrije tijd én in deeltijd op afstand aan de VU studeren. Elk jaar starten er zo een 20-tal studenten met de opleiding, die aan het eind van hun studie bij voldoende resultaat het MSc. diploma van de FALW (Faculteit der Aard- en Levenswetenschappen) ontvangen. Sinds september 2006 gebruikt deze opleiding de communicatiemiddelen Breeze en Skype om het samenwerkend leren binnen de opleiding te versterken. Die behoefte aan meer samenwerkend leren heeft zowel theoretische als praktische redenen. Uit de "leerpiramide" van Bales blijkt dat het grootste leereffect (80%) optreedt wanneer studenten (zich)zelf onderwijzen door stof aan elkaar uit te leggen. Gezamenlijke kennisconstructie biedt aantoonbare voordelen en verbetert de studieprestatie. Uit literatuur blijkt verder dat variatie en differentiatie in werkvormen studenten stimuleert. Dit pleit ervoor om het eenzijdige karakter van de huidige werkvormen af te schaffen. Ook uit de evaluaties van de huidige studenten komt de wens tot samenwerkend leren naar voren. Studenten geven aan dat ze het samenwerken buiten de conferentie missen. Afstandsonderwijs is te vaak een individuele aangelegenheid voor de studenten. Ze missen het contact en de discussie over de lesstof met docenten en medestudenten en ze willen meer afwisselende werkvormen binnen het programma zien. Het gebrek daaraan ervaren studenten als een duidelijk probleem. Ook de positieve resultaten en ervaringen met samenwerkend leren elders opgedaan en de rol van ICT daarbij hebben docenten gestimuleerd om de oude lesmodule te gaan aanpassen. Bijvoorbeeld bij SURF, bij de DU, bij de VU zelf en bij de samenwerking tussen de VU en Windesheim. De VU kent een systeem van een Educatieve Middelen Pool (EMP). Faculteiten die onderwijskundige innovatie-ideeën willen vormgeven krijgen daarvoor ondersteuning in de vorm van medewerking en onderstuening van het onderwijscentrum. Pilot In september 2006 is in het kader van deze EMP een pilot gestart met een eerste groep van 11 studenten uit 7 landen (Kenya, Ethiopië, Tanzania, Japan, Zuid Afrika, Nederland en Curacao) en in April/Mei 2007 is de tweede groep gestart (tussen de 15 en 20 studenten). Het gaat daarbij om het samenwerkend leren op afstand voor de cursus "GIS; een introductie" van de master opleiding GIScience. De pilot is een herontwerp van een bestaande opdracht, met gebruik van bestaande technologie. Het project gaat uit van een bestaande infrastructuur (Breeze bij SURFNET). De didactische en technische scholing van de betrokken medewerkers vindt plaats vanuit de faculteit on the job tijdens de uitvoering van het project zelf. Het programma is gestart met kennismaken en het verstrekken van een samenwerkingsopdracht door de docent. Tussentijdse presentaties worden via Breeze gecombineerd met PowerPoint via documentsharing. De docent geeft tussentijds feedback op de voorlopige resultaten Ervaringen Uit de opgedane ervaringen en evaluaties na afloop van deze periode blijkt dat studenten met de nieuwe samenwerkingsopdrachten en door de interacties tussen de verschillende individuele bijdrages een betere prestatie hebben geleverd. Ook de betrokkenheid en de motivatie van de studenten is sterk verbeterd. Studenten konden online om toelichting vragen. In de latere sessies bleek dan ook meer dan vroeger welke studenten achterbleven. Opvallend was dat studenten meer dan vroeger keurig op tijd voor de videosessie verschenen en hun werkstuk ook op tijd af hadden. De technische infrastructuur, Breeze en/of Skype(met video) bleek prima te voldoen. In het begin was even tijd nodig om de techniek goed in te stellen. Het geluid van de docent was te horen, maar omgekeerd dat van de studenten niet altijd. Met behulp van aanwijzingen door de docent en de chat-functie binnen Breeze was dit euvel na

ongeveer 10 minuten verholpen. De docent, die in september nog veel voorbereidingstijd nodig had, bleek in april 2007 hiervoor veel minder tijd nodig te hebben. Ook studenten waren inmiddels vertrouwd met het medium en een eenvoudige opdracht om op een bepaalde datum en tijdstip in Breeze te verschijnen werd stipt opgevolgd. Het meest opvallende was het plezier dat studenten hadden om samen te kunnen werken. Ze hadden nu de indruk dat ze deel uitmaakten van een groep studenten. In tegenstelling tot de individuele opdrachten, die ook deel uitmaken van de module, werden de deadlines voor het inleveren van de samenwerkingsopdracht altijd gehaald. Toekomst De bedoeling is dat na de geslaagde pilot de opdracht als een vast onderdeel in het curriculum opgenomen zal worden. Vervolgens zal de opleiding zelf onderzoeken in hoeverre samenwerkend leren in andere cursussen geïmplementeerd zal worden. Het volgend jaar zal een uitbreiding komen naar meer vakken en zullen studenten ook gebruik gaan maken van de nieuwe toepassing "Google Docs", een online tekstverwerker die speciaal bedoeld is om gelijktijdig met meerdere personen aan een stuk te kunnen werken. De faculteit is enthousiast en men verwacht dat communicatiemiddelen zoals Breeze en Skype in de toekomst steeds meer zal worden gebruikt. UNIGIS Newsletter (October 2006) http://www.econ.vu.nl/unigis/downloads/newsletters/october_2006/#General%20News Collaborative learning pilot module 1 by Mathilde Molendijk To make life difficult from the start, we introduced a new way of learning in the first Module: an assignment in which small groups of students have to deliver a group report on the 'Analysis of a GIS: components and linkages'. The idea behind this assignment is that the professional students cannot only learn a lot from the module materials, they can learn substantially from each other! (FYI: this is backed up by evidence from numerous academic educational studies of course). We used modern software to support this collaborative distance learning: connecting to the virtual meeting place at the same time, we could meet the students, demonstrate the websites of the students (the software has application - and desktop sharing possibilities), see each other via the webcam, chat etc. Not all people survived the software battle, and for some unknown technical reasons, the connection failed. In some cases we shifted to Skype. Being the new tutor of Module 1, I liked the virtual meetings a lot and this way the learning for me becomes less 'distance'. I appreciate your efforts to participate in the meetings a lot, thanks! We are looking forward to your results.
