TECHNICAL ATTRACTIONS IN THE MORAVIAN-SILESIAN REGION The Moravian-Silesian Region borders on the Zlín and Olomouc Regions, Poland and Slovakia and it is a region full of contrasts and opportunities. The mixture of beautiful countryside, sport facilities, relaxation centres, and many cultural, architectural, sacral and technical monuments forms the picturesque and extraordinary territory of the Moravian-Silesian Region. The region is divided into six attractive tourist regions, each of which has its specific and invaluable character. The Beskydy Mountains may offer, in addition to their beautiful nature, numerous monuments of folk architecture. The Moravian Kravařsko-Poodří Region is enriched by many chateaus and ruins of castles. The Ostrava Region has its specific and extraordinary character given by the tradition of the deep mining of black coal. It is reflected in many technical monuments having aspirations, thanks to their uniqueness, to be listed as UNESCO monuments. Although the Opavské Slezsko Region is a narrow band of territory, it offers a wide range of monuments. The most attractive ones include chateaus, historical towns and preserved military forts. The Jeseníky Mountains are a favourite destination for tourists not only due to their natural treasures, but also due to the oldest narrow-gauge rail line with a steam train in Central Europe. The Těšín-Silesian Region is a picturesque territory at the border with Poland, where flat meadows change to rolling hills and mountain ridges of the Beskydy Mountains and the Jablůnkovské mezihoří. The Technical Attractions publication intends to introduce the offer of the most attractive technical sights in the Moravian-Silesian Region which make this region unique and different from the other tourist regions in the Czech Republic. The aim of the publication is to present numerous technical constructions and places of interest, i.e. the remains of the remarkably strong industrial history of the region.

1 THE MICHAL MINE – A NATIONAL CULTURAL MONUMENT (Důl Michal – národní kulturní památka) The history of this former coal mine dates back to the year of 1843 when the Austrian state began to excavate two shafts of the mine in Michálkovice near Ostrava. One of them, the so-called Michálkovice Pit No. 3 was later renamed after the deceased k. & k. royal counsellor Michael Laier, to the Michal Pit. The reconstruction finished in 1915, which was implemented according to the design of František Fiala, a well-known architect, had a significant influence on the appearance of this, both structurally and technically, highly valuable premises. The operation at the Michal Mine ended in 1994. It has been declared a national cultural monument and it is included in the indicative list of the Czech Republic for entry to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The sight-seeing tour enables visitors to walk along the same route as the miners going to work every day – it follows the path of a miner from the changing rooms to the pit in its entire length. The emphasis is dedicated especially to the authenticity of the environment and details and it
was the intention to preserve the whole premises in their original form as if the people, who used to work here, have just left leaving everything in its place. You can see chain changing rooms, staff bathrooms, a guild room, a lamp room, the mine building, a bridge for the movement of workers from the lamp room to the mine building and the machine plant with the original technical equipment which represents a unique set of electrical mining machines and compressors from the era of the beginning of electrification. The areas of the main building are often used for exhibitions, theatre performances and other cultural and social events. • Opening hours: April, October (Sat, Sun) 9:00 – 17:00 (entries at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00) May – September (Tue – Sun) 9:00 – 17:00 (entries at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00) July, August (Tue – Sun) 9:00 – 19:00 (entries at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00) Důl Michal, ČSA 95/413, 715 00 Ostrava-Michálkovice Tel.: +420 596 240 621, +420 596 628 457, +420 596 231 151 e-mail:

OSTRAVA REGION
OSTRAVSKO 2 OKD MINING MUSEUM IN OSTRAVA-PETŘKOVICE (HORNICKÉ MUZEUM OKD V OSTRAVĚ-PETŘKOVICÍCH) The largest mining museum in the Czech Republic was opened in 1993. It is situated at Landek Hill which was declared a National natural monument in 1992 and is a worldfamous site in terms of geology, archaeology, history, natural science and mining. It is also famous for the unique finding of Landecká Venuše (the Venus of Landek), the only slender Venus found in Europe. Actually, it is the combination of the mining museum as a technical monument and Landek Hill as a national natural landmark with rich vegetation which gives the location its uniqueness and attraction. In the Mining Museum, visitors can view collections of the original mining museum from 1905 and the OstravaKarviná mining from 1782 to the present in several expositions. The exhibition villa which documents a cross-section of the severalthousand-year-old history in thematically separated expositions of Landek as well as the mining in the Ostrava Region in general, is a suitable place for the beginning or end of a tour. Visitors can visit the underground exposition, which is situated in the adits of the upper seams of the actual historical Anselm mine, by going down through the mining shaft in the mine cage from the historical building of the mine. The tour of shafts from the middle of the 19th century is accompanied by an interesting expert commentary, some of the machines are shown in operation and everything is complemented by life-size dummies of miners. Another exposition documents the mining rescue services and it is the biggest of this kind in the world – you can see examples of the mine rescue base there. The overall atmosphere is complemented by exhibits and expositions freely distributed around the premises which present, in the open area, the local human activities from the Stone Age in the form of a settlement of primeval people, through the boom of mining represented by the typical industrial architecture, to the mining tech8
nology of the 20th century. The buildings of the Museum made of unfaced brickwork are an example of the industrial architecture of 1890-1915. On the way to the mining exposition, visitors can stop in a typical mining pub – “Barborka Harenda”, the interior of which is richly decorated by objects with the mining theme. The Museum also includes sport and relaxation premises, a rope centre, a cycling track and a children´s playground. • Opening hours: all-year round (except for Mon) 9:00 – 19:00 Hornické muzeum OKD, Pod Landekem 64, 725 29 Ostrava-Petřkovice Tel.: +420 596 131 803, +420 596 131 804 e-mail:

The industrial premises from the 1st half of the 19th century were declared a national technical monument in the autumn of 2000 and consequently a national cultural monument in June 2002 and thanks to its uniqueness, it has aspirations to be listed in the UNESCO World Heritage. It forms the characteristic southern panorama of Ostrava and it consists of three mutually continuing units – the Hlubina Mine, the coke-oven plant and the blast furnace operating unit of Vítkovice Ironworks. The whole technological process occurred at one place – starting from the mining of the coal and its coking up to the final product, raw iron. The whole premises were founded by the opening of the Rudolf Ironworks by Archduke Rudolf, the Olomouc Archbishop, in 1828. The first finery furnace was put into operation in 1830 and the first blast furnace in 1836. The Hlubina Mine was founded in 1852 and its further development followed. The operation of the Vítkovice Blast Furnaces was ended in 1998 and its operating plants have been open to the public in the form of an industrial
open-air museum. The tour starts and ends at gate lodge no.1 near the main road to Ostrava from Frýdek-Místek, from which blast furnaces can be seen. A project of New Vítkovice, which regards a gradual renovation of the most valuable parts of the premises in the Lower Area, has been currently prepared in cooperation with many specialists, historians and leading Czech architects, and it should culminate in the building of a unique university and research centre for several thousand students and experts. The entire premises of the monument within the radius of 1.5km are an example of the elaborate industrial expansion which influenced the character of the Ostrava Region. The basis for the urban solution of the territory is the maximum use of the national cultural monument´s potential. The 4th energy centre should be converted into an interactive museum, an educational area and special educational laboratories; the building of a multipurpose assembly hall divided into two rooms for a total of 1,500 people is presumed in the Gas-holder.

1 NARROW-GAUGE RAILROAD - OSOBLAHA (ÚZKOKOLEJNÁ DRÁHA - OSOBLAHA) This unique narrow-gauge railroad in the Osoblaha region was built during the time of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy and was put into operation on 14 December 1898. The narrowgauge railway connects Třemešná ve Slezsku with Osoblaha. The regulations at that time permitted building railways only for a distance longer than 20 km and in order to fulfil this requirement, constructors decided to artificially prolong the line by many curves. The Osoblaha narrow-gauge railroad is a technical monument with a line length of 20km and track width of 760mm. There are 4 bridges and 102 curves on the line. The highest permitted speed of a train going through ten stops is 40km per hour. It is the oldest narrowgauge railway in Central Europe. After WWII

the line was recommenced on 28 October 1945 and since 2004 a historical steam train operated by 1. parní úzkorozchodná (1st Steam Narrow Guage Company) has been running there. Czech Railways operates ordinary passenger trains on the railway. • Tel.: +420 554 642 121 e-mail:

3 THE KRUŽBERK WATER RESERVOIR (VODNÍ NÁDRŽ KRUŽBERK) The valley reservoir on the Moravice River supplies potable water to the Ostrava region. The project for this dam was processed within the water management plan of our republic in 1930–1932. The reservoir has an area of 287ha and the length of the flooded valley is 10km with the maximum depth of 31m. The 280m long and 33m high dam was built in 1948–1955. At the beginning of the dam there are ruins of the small castles of Medlice and Šternek on both banks.
4 THE SCYTHE PLANT IN KARLOVICE (KOSÁRNA V KARLOVICÍCH VE SLEZSKU) A unique museum is housed in the wooden building of the scythe plant founded most-likely in the 17th century. The timbered storied house, which was modified to the present appearance in the 18th century, is closely related to the history of ironwork in the village. The Karlovice scythe plant was one of the plants, which further processed iron from local hammer mills. They produced scythes, wires and other agricultural tools there. Nowadays, you can see an apartment on the ground floor – an apartment for the retired owner, on the 1st floor there is a gentleman gamekeeper’s room connected to a workroom and a kitchen. On the 2nd floor of the building there is a forestry exposition about the growing and protection of forests and the history of forestry, in the barn next to the scythe plant there is an exposition of agricultural tools and machinery. • Opening hours: May – September 9:00 – 12:00, 12:30 – 17:00 (except for Mon) Karlovice 146, 793 23 Karlovice Tel.: +420 554 744 077 e-mail:

1 THE CHOTĚBUZ-PODOBORA ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK (ARCHEOPARK CHOTĚBUZ-PODOBORA) One of the most valuable and the most interesting locations in the territory of Těšín Silesia is a bi-cultural elevated fortification in Chotěbuz-Podobora. The first stage of the local settlement – the primeval one – represents the period of the first Iron Age, the second stage of settlement falls within the Slavonic era. At that time a large fortified place gradually grew here which served as the centre of power and business. The archaeological park is a reconstruction of the Slavonic settlement from the period from the middle of the 8th through the 11th centuries. It consists of reconstructions of fortifications and common residential buildings, a hall object and an entrance gate with a tower and a bridge. The construction of other parts of the Archaeological Park will have been finished by 2012.

5 CAST IRON FOUNTAIN IN KARVINÁ (litinová KAŠNA v karviné)
An interesting technical monument is the water supply tower which was built as a constructivist strucure probably in 1928. The circular tower has 6 floors with the height of 39.4m and diameter of 11.4m. Above the top floor there is a water tank which no longer serves its purpose. A part of the original technical equipment is preserved inside the tower.
The historicist style cast iron fountain in the centre of Masaryk Square complements the beautiful appearance of this valuable historical centre of the town. The fountain was built in 1900 at the place of the original stone water reservoir from the end of the 18th century which replaced the wooden water reservoir from the 16th century. The much more decorative new fountain was made according to the design of Georg Wirth from Vienna. The fountain is 5m high and its main part consists of two bowls. Around the fountain there is a wide circular stone reservoir. The lower part of the cast iron fountain is decorated by statues of dolphins, there are putti in the central part which represent the four seasons of the year, the top is decorated by a gold-plated rosette. Water from both of the bowls flows out of lions´ heads. The fountain is illuminated in the evenings.

5 WIND MILL IN HLAVNICE (Větrný mlýn v Hlavnici) The wooden wind mill of the column or ram type was built in 1810. It is still well-preserved. In 1974 it got new blades and was re-roofed but the inside milling equipment was not repaired. There is a possibility of interesting accommodation for anybody who has a positive relationship with nature; you can sleep in the main building, which is heated by a stove or a historical oven and in storied historical cabins. The entire farm including the preserved mill corresponds to the style of living in this region at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries. The offer of accommodation is valid for the whole year, the capacity is not specifically limited and you can get more information in the Holos centre (www.holos.cz).
