Stichting MSE - where metals connect academia and industry

Stichting MSE - where metals connect academia and industry
Introduction Stichting Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) is a consortium of Dutch companies that engage in longterm collaboration with the only academic materials science department in the Netherlands, located at Delft University of Technology. The collaboration seeks to continue and further develop the field of materials science. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering’s research and education focus on metals. The mission of the Department is to perform scientific research and to educate young graduates to apply sound metallurgical knowledge in society. All aspects of the metals life cycle are covered, from primary processing, through thermomechanical treatment,
welding and corrosion, to recycling. The Department’s choice of this broad focus reflects the relevance of all these aspects for the development and sustainable use of metals in industry and society, in which the expertise of young engineers and scientists is pivotal. The financial support to the Department from Stichting MSE and its partners is vital for upholding scientific education and research in the field of metallurgy.
Objective Stichting MSE offers its industrial partners an opportunity to exchange ideas and collaborate with the Department on education and research, and puts the industrial partners in direct contact with students in the Materials Science and Engineering MSc programme and various other MSc and BSc programmes. The Stichting has no staff of its own and is run at no cost by TU Delft staff. All partners of the Stichting are represented on the Advisory Board of the Stichting, which meets at least twice a year with the Board to discuss education, research and organisation. In 2012 the Advisory Board met with the Board of the Stichting on 26 June and 9 October.
Stichting MSE - where metals connect academia and industry
Department of Materials Science and Engineering Stichting MSE financially supports the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) of the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE) at TU Delft. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering performs coherent and innovative research that is oriented to the development, production, characterisation and control of the properties of materials, with a strong emphasis on metals. The Department’s research and education cover the entire life cycle of metals, from primary processing to recycling. This strategy has given the Department a unique combination of scientific expertise about all aspects of the production and use of metals.
Life cycle of metals The Department aims to generate the fundamental knowledge on which to base the development of metal alloys that perform better, have a longer life, and retain their functional properties, while pursuing a sustainable use of raw materials and a minimum environmental footprint. The responsible use and substitution of critical materials are the linchpins of the Department’s research and education.
Education The close relationship between education and research that characterises university education is embodied by Master’s and PhD students, whose role in the Department’s research is essential. They work closely with their supervisors, colleagues and technical staff in the pursuit of high standard academic publications. These students enjoy an excellent education in materials science that prepares them for the technological and social challenges in the industry and academia of today and tomorrow. The Department operates two Master’s degree courses: the Materials Science and Engineering degree programme, and the Master’s track Materials Engineering and Applications within the Mechanical Engineering Master’s degree programme. The first course trains Master’s students to become materials engineers, and the second to become mechanical engineers with an in-depth knowledge of materials. Twenty-two first-year students enrolled on these programmes in the 2012-2013 academic year. Two introductory courses on materials science were given in the Mechanical Engineering and Maritime Technology Bachelor’s degree programmes (500 students a year). The Department’s contribution to these courses will increase sharply in the 2013-2014 academic year; a new programme is currently under development. In the third year of the Bachelor’s degree programmes, groups of four students perform a research project of 1000 hours in total. Each semester the Department usually supervises between six and eight groups for materials science research projects that can be defined together with an industrial partner. Since September 2012 the Department has run the minor in Deep Sea (one semester for third-year undergraduates), together with Maritime Technology. Forty students are taking this minor in 2012-2013. The minor Deep Sea will not be run in the academic year 2013-2014.

analysing metals structures and composition and for characterising properties. The available techniques include optical and electron microscopy, diffraction, in-situ characterisation techniques for metal behaviour under mechanical load, high temperatures, magnetic fields and corrosive environments. In close collaboration with other research institutes, characterisation techniques are applied that are based on synchrotron radiation, neutrons or positrons. The physical modelling of mechanical and microstructural behaviour of metals is being developed on the atomic, microstructural, and macroscopic length scales. The Department’s strategy of focusing on the entire life cycle of metals is an important reinforcing factor in the research. This strategy has helped the Department to develop a broad spectrum of expertise that facilitates optimum academic interaction and incentive for communal fields such as thermodynamics, phase transformations, heat and mass transfer, chemistry, physical mechanisms on multiple time and length scales, mechanical behaviour and analysis techniques. International contacts and teamwork ‘Metallurgy in Delft’ has a strong reputation in the scientific world of international metallurgy. The Department’s scientists accordingly maintain many international contacts, which are formed in communal projects, student and young researcher exchanges, and visiting professorships. Dr Wim Sloof is a visiting professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology in China, and Dr Yongxiang Yang is a visiting professor at North-Eastern University and Anhui University, both in China. There is also long-term collaboration at professorial level with Ghent University (Prof. Jilt Sietsma, Prof. Leo Kestens, Dr Roumen Petrov) and with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Prof. Terryn), both in Belgium. In addition to these long-term relationships there are many exchanges and collaborations at the level of research projects and students, such as with RWTH Aachen University, the Max-Planck Institut in Düsseldorf, Cambridge University, the University of Wollongong, the University of Birmingham, McGill University, Mintek Johannesburg, KTH in Stockholm,

Risø National Laboratory, Tohoku University, Argonne National Laboratory, the ESRF Synchrotron Facility, and others. It goes without saying that the Department is also prominently represented at international conferences as invited and keynote speakers, session chairs and members of organising and scientific committees. Scientists of the Department are also regularly invited for international evaluation committees. Unique The focus of the MSE Department’s research and education is on a fundamental understanding of the behaviour of metals in production and use. The MSE Department is the only academic department in this field in the Netherlands. The MSE Department involves Bachelor’s and Master’s students very intensively in metallurgical research, including in collaborative projects with industrial partners.
Research groups Metals Processing, Microstructure and Properties (MPMP), Prof. Jilt Sietsma, Prof. Ian Richardson Surface and Interface Engineering (SIE), Prof. Barend Thijsse (interim) Virtual Materials and Mechanics (VMM), Prof. Barend Thijsse Materials in Art and Archaeology (MAA), Prof. Joris Dik Metals for Extreme Conditions, a vacant chair In addition to the above full-time professors, Prof. Emeritus Rob Boom, Prof. Emeritus Laurens Katgerman, Prof. Leo Kestens, Prof. Herman Terryn and Prof. Emeritus Hans de Wit have part-time positions in the Department.
The Department’s research is oriented to the metal itself; the knowledge generated is generic in nature and relevant to all application areas. The Department’s research covers the entire life cycle of metals, from primary processing to recycling. The expertise of the Department’s scientists encompasses a uniquely broad spectrum of scientific knowledge. The engineers that graduate from the Department are either very well-trained materials engineers (MSE Master’s programme) or mechanical engineers with an in-depth knowledge of materials (the MEA track).
