Cultural notes Jamu Indonesians believe in the curative properties of plants of all kinds. In many areas but particularly in Java, penjual jamu can be seen going from house to house selling their medicines. Often this is the first medical treatment sought. Jamu is also sold in the markets. Often this traditional Javanese medicine is made into a drink but can consist of pastes, powders, creams and capsules. These are consumed daily and are used to cure everything from headaches and fatigue to leprosy and flabby stomachs. These natural remedies originated in the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Solo. The ladies of the nobility spent their time discovering and perfecting the science of using roots, flowers, barks, nuts, herbs and spices. These ancient recipes are now used commercially to manufacture a wide variety of jamu. Masuk angin Most Indonesians believe that sickness can be caused by masuk angin, literally ‘the entrance of the wind’. To protect themselves against this, Indonesians wrap themselves in warm clothes. It is common to see workers wearing zipped-up leather jackets under the intense midday sun. To cure any illness due to masuk angin, oil is rubbed onto a person’s neck and back with a heavy metal coin that is vigorously scraped along the skin. The deep red stripes that remain for a day or two, look much worse than they feel.

SUGGESTED TEACHING STRATEGIES Using the story Students: • • • • • • • • • • •
read the stories aloud and record themselves on audio cassette sequence the story using graphics and speech bubbles from a hard copy illustrate their own stories and present them to the class act out the stories and make video recordings if possible design an advertisement for the stories write profiles of the characters in the stories write summaries of the stories make up their own beginning or ending to the story continue the stories by writing the next chapter make up a class story: each student says or writes a sentence and it is added to by the next student write stories using the readers as a model.
