Armany
paving the way for American Oak flooring in Indonesia
Armany Parquet is a small Jakarta-based wood flooring supply and installing company, owned and run by Roberto Hidajat. Its current activities could have a significant effect on the Indonesian market for American hardwoods. Armany stands as a beacon to the fast emerging wealthy class
by Roberto Hidajat
among Indonesia’s 240 million population, in a nation increasingly establishing its place on the world economic stage. By promoting solid American oak flooring to a well networked community of successful home-owners who show off their residences to others, Armany is paving the way for Oak flooring in a country formerly focused tropical species for wood flooring.
T
he company, which started life in 2004, has concentrated in the past on installing mainly engineered flooring made locally in Teak and Merbau, as well as decking in local hardwoods Bangkirai and Ulin (Ironwood). Its first major project was the Hard Rock Cafe in Jakarta and it also received a “People’s Choice Award” based on a survey by two interior magazines. Now things are changing in this newly dynamic domestic market. Some engineered flooring companies in Indonesia, which have depended largely on exports, are reported to have suffered badly in the recent global market downturn. With the construction and housing depression in USA and Europe, some have gone under and others have reduced production. At the same time the

Indonesian economy is having a bull run and is gaining hugely in confidence, which is driving the domestic luxury home market where developers are creating extensive residential satellite complexes around Jakarta and elsewhere. The rapid urbanisation of other provincial cities, such as Surabaya and Semarang and resorts such as Bali, Bintan and Lombok, are also adding to the growth of a healthy market for quality flooring. Incidentally, Armany refuses to participate in what it deems to be the low-end laminate flooring market and always stands up for real wood, for that is what luxury home developers and owners in Indonesia now want – if not the ever popular marble. Typically their home entrances are adorned with marble from pink to grey, but the bedrooms and sometimes
the living areas demand wood, and not just Indonesian wood. Today that high-end market is increasingly demanding solid wood flooring installed to an equivalent high standard as everything else in the house. A tour of Jakarta’s new residential areas, such as Pearl Beach, surrounded by golf courses, marinas, designer shops and a plethora of crowded restaurants confirms this new Indonesian confidence. Many of Armany’s clients travel the world on business to the USA and Europe and come back having seen temperate hardwoods for the first time; and Oak is what they now want. Residential installations of solid American White Oak flooring have risen to nearly 20% of Armany’s contracts in under a year. In the commercial sector, Armany

has supplied a couple of boutique designer shops in the Pacific Place complex in central Jakarta and is currently installing about 50,000 square feet of flooring at the newly constructed French department store Galleries Lafayette. Generally Indonesians prefer American Oak for its colour, flat cut grain patterning and limited knots. Many of Armany’s clients consider that solid hardwood is in keeping with the fine quality of other materials in their opulent
residences, rejecting engineered flooring as unacceptable. This calls for serious expertise in dealing with all the challenging problems of temperate wood in a tropical climate, albeit mainly in air conditioned interiors. Armany is addressing this issue of movement with moisture changes by its designs, technical experience and by appropriate sealing of the material. Armany now employs 8 sales staff, around 30 installing carpenters and has
an office and small showroom at the well-known Jakarta Design Centre much frequented by specifiers and their clients; and another in Bali. The company, now a leader in the industry, also exhibits at local shows, where its Oak flooring and staircases are promoted, as it continues to focus and concentrate on a vibrant home flooring market at the very highest end in Indonesia.

Cherry
not forgotten
Much has been said, and is well understood, about fashion cycles in hardwoods – especially in furniture. The current fashion for Black Walnut for example seems to go on and on, but for some years American Black Cherry has lost favour with furniture makers and interior designers. That’s fine. The trees will simply grow and grow, and wait. One thing for sure is the fact that Cherry will never be perceived as any less beautiful, than it always was, once it returns to the attention of designers and consumers. The magnificent new Stadthalle designed by Max Dudler in Reutlingen, Germany is a good reminder that Cherry has not been entirely forgotten.
10
There is no shortage of American Cherry (Prunus serotina) growing in the forests of the eastern United States. The total standing inventory of all U.S. hardwood species was measured by the U.S. Forest Service at over 11,000 million cubic metres in 2007, of which approximately 2% was estimated to be Cherry. So a rough estimate that the available standing Cherry is about 220 million cubic metres is reasonable.
N
ow it might be suggested that there are some reasons to consider a return to Cherry for high end projects and quality furni-
ture: In recent months there has been much media coverage about the improved market demand in the United States real estate market and confirmed by US hardwood exporters visiting Asia and the Middle East at recent exhibitions such as Interzum, Domotex and the Dubai WoodShow. A recent report from the authoritative Hardwood Market Report addressed this improvement and the effect that it may have on the supply and demand balance for American hardwood exports and domestic shipments of all species. But by all accounts American Cherry is now said to be plentiful and available from many sawmills and exporters, while other species may not be quite so readily available due to demand. The relative price difference between Cherry at its last peak in say 2008, and the price today makes it an attractive material to buy. For example, the Hardwood Market Report of 3rd May 2013 reported 4/4 FAS Appalachian Cherry 90% red one face 50% red reverse, Kiln Dried, gross tally, from areas 1 and 2, at US$1,770 (unselected US$1,650) per MBF, FOB mill compared to Hard Maple #1 & #2 white at US$1,725 and unselected at US$1,465 – an unthinkable position five years ago when Cherry prices were so much higher. One view from the US is that that Hard Maple, Soft Maple, Red Oak, and Ash have all been rising in price, while Cherry is about half the price of what it was 5 years ago and has been declining and is now stagnant from a de-
mand perspective. This is a classic bargain situation of an unloved and ‘out of fashion’ species, and thus now available at historically low prices. So Cherry offers very good value today. The point should be made however that Cherry prices do vary according to supply region and according to the specification agreed between exporters and their buyers. Sap is a major issue for many buyers. The NHLA Grading Rules form a basis for grade definition, but some contracts, for example, can be made limiting the amount of sapwood, which is not a defect under the rules, to certain percentages. Cherry displays different characteristics from one region to another which is why prices quoted for ‘Appalachian’ may differ from ‘North Central’. The colour fashion at the moment tends towards darker hardwoods rather than the blonde fashion of years ago. Cherry takes stain extremely well and, while nobody would suggest covering up its beautiful natural colour, there are some excellent examples of stained Cherry that appeal to today’s consumers. One major American Cherry exporter points out “Cherry is a specie which naturally darkens with age and develops a deeper toned look over time. That is a prime reason why antique furniture made of Cherry is so desirable. It darkens and the grain becomes more luminous over time when a natural finish is used.” There is another compelling, environmental reason for selecting Cherry, which may sound unusual but has a real logic. Cherry has long been a revered species and likely to enjoy a longer life before being discarded, as with some other wood. In many cases it has been one of the key spe-
cies for American heritage furniture, as it is also in France. Cherry therefore can, and is likely to, lock up atmospheric carbon longer in fine furniture and joinery than many other lesser species. Finally in export markets, there are signs that some custom designers are slowly returning to Cherry as it begins to creep back into furniture shows and projects such as the Reutlingen Stadthalle. Cherry has consistently been featured by AHEC in projects like the Indonesian Furniture Design Competition, throughout the recent period of loss in popularity. It is a supremely suitable hardwood for quality products, safe to use in terms of legality, and has been sustainable since the early European settlers, such as the Shakers, discovered its beauty for furniture. As the US domestic market returns to health, higher end real estate developers with wealthy clients may also improve demand. As Cherry returns to fashion, as it surely will in due course, it might be good to get ahead of the game! Stadhalle Reutlingen, Germany

D
ay in day out we offer imported sawn timber in a wide range of species to our customers in Asia. Initially when we started out almost 17 years ago we concentrated on FSC certified pine and eucalyptus sawn timber from South Africa but today we truly source from all over the world. Softwoods from New Zealand, South American and northern Europe and hardwoods from Africa, South-, Central- and North America, Europe and even some from Australia. The only region we do not source from is Russia which I will address in a future article. Besides the widening of our sourcing regions we also have seen an increase of product ranges. In the past it used to be mainly sawn timber but today it comprises of logs, sawn timber and veneers. And instead of the standard supply of the rough sawn timber we have seen a huge increased demand for surfaced timber not just in random widths and lengths but either fixed widths and/or fixed lengths. The next step is that the Asian market starts to warm up for imported custom dimension timber and veneer components. One wonders what is next and to be the best in this business we, as suppliers of imported products, have to ask this question every day. “What do we need
to do to be able to satisfy our customers now an in the future” is a question which is constantly being raised in our company. For sure there are many good answers to this question but basically the answer is simple; “we need to provide what our customers need”. This does not just relate to products but also to service, know-how and reliability. One item which many of our competitors fail to offer is “know-how” not only in relation to the products being offered but also on those products we might be able to offer in the future. To do this we must understand not only our own Asian markets but also those markets targeted by our customers. We need to understand the development of each market to be able to determine specific market trends and adjust our products accordingly. I was pleasantly surprised when I read an article recently about a company based in Europe that produces a truly unique floor using the natural shapes of the unedged raw timber boards. The company is called “Bolefloor” (I guess in Indonesia and Malaysia we would call it “Bolleh” floor meaning “Good” floor in Indonesian language). They have come up with both solid and engineered flooring boards which are CNC router shaped using not
only the rough outlines of each timber plank but also based on the dimensions of the actual room where the floor will to be installed. So customers can send their room layout and the company will send you a design custom-made for your house or other space. Each supply comes with a detailed floor plan and every flooring board has been numbered at the back for easy installation. I suggest you have a look at their website at www.bolefloor.com, the company also had a stand at the recent Interzum in Germany. I find this type of customer service truly the best I have seen so far. Most flooring companies in Asia are fighting each other in the same markets with almost identical products and the result is that many of them are hardly making any money. Many of these manufacturers complain that the business is so tough and the only way forward is “more automation and demanding lower raw material prices”. I guess both are good but why not try innovating your products and service by offering something truly unique? Look at Bolefloor and see what you can learn from them. In case anyone doubts the environmental credentials of wood! by Michael Buckley
(From a presentation ‘Green Wood’ given by Michael Buckley at the Green Pavilion of the International Furniture Fair, Singapore, March 2013) From an environmental standpoint, wood produced in a sustainable manner is an extraordinarily friendly material. Over its full life cycle (cradle to grave), wood is estimated to release 24 – 47% less air pollution; 8 – 23% less solid waste and requires up to 57% less energy to manufacture than other materials. Other products discharge as much as 4 times more water pollution and emit 34 – 81% more greenhouse gas. And, unlike other products, wood in furniture stores carbon, the principal contributor to greenhouse gases.
M
arkets for ‘Green’ materials and products are taking hold all over the world, and that includes Asia. They are driven by many factors. The problem in this highly complex subject is that there are opposing forces at work, so confusion reigns! For example Steel is manufactured through an energy-intensive process, generating pollution and waste at all stages. Large volumes of carbon dioxide – the principle greenhouse gas – are also emitted, contributing to global warming. This seems to have missed the marketing people who make many spurious, unfair ‘Greenwash” claims, such as “Steel: the ultimate sustainable material” How can such a claim be substantiated? The creation of useful products in wood requires relatively less energy than other materials. The table below shows the amount of energy, (mega joule = million joules), needed to produce one kg of finished product. The production of 1 kg
14
of kiln dried hardwood requires half the energy to produce an equivalent mass of concrete, and a fraction of the energy required to produce steel, plastic or aluminium. For example, let’s consider the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), based on science and measured by independent Austrian consultants PE International, for solid American Ash sawn lumber. In the following table we can see that the carbon uptake from the atmosphere (shaded green) now stored in the sawn wood is greater than the energy required to harvest, saw, dry and transport the wood material (shown above the zero line). Data will change slightly for different species according to density and thicknesses, but these values for wood are representative for many hardwoods of all types. So using wood gives a net gain to the environment. And in case anyone doubts the ability of wood to compete on performance grounds; the superior volume to weight
ratio of laminated American White Oak allowed engineers Arup to use less volume of wood than steel would have required for the same strength rating – thus allowing more light into the atrium at Portcullis House in Westminster, London. The underlying environmental issues surrounding the use of wood are highly complex. The wood products trade and industry has a responsibility to work with policy makers, scientists and non-governmental organisations to provide appropriate tools for design professionals. One of those initiatives is to provide assurance of sustainable forestry by certification. So, hopefully having established the importance of wood as a material, how do we assure its continued sustainability? There are several international forest certification systems that work to ensure greater sustainability of forests. Most of us are familiar with FSC. But many people outside Europe do not understand how the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest
BRUSH SANDING ASIA
Certification (PEFC) works. PEFC is nonprofit, non-government, working by endorsing national certification schemes. It also works throughout the supply chain. PEFC’s vision is “a world in which people manage forests sustainably.“ Its mission is “to give society confidence that people manage forests sustainably.” All stakeholder groups are involved and engaged throughout the process of certification. There are now 31 countries endorsed by PEFC including Malaysia, while others in Asia have joined and are working towards endorsement. PEFC is now the largest of all schemes with 247 million hectares certified. The Malaysian Timber Certification Council’s (MTCS) scheme was the first national forest certification standard in a tropical country to be endorsed by PEFC and so MTCC certified products carry the PEFC logo accordingly.

“Use it or lose it!”
Finally, there continues to be confusion and misconceptions that the world is running out of wood and should stop cutting trees. But consumers, influenced by pressure groups do not always appreciate the reality of sustainable wood production – or the consequences to forests of not using wood. Here the green movement needs to deliver a full responsible message which includes “Use it or lose it!” If forests do not have a commercial and sustainable offering they are in serious risk of conversion to other land uses, especially in the tropics. During the 1990s the volume of wood standing in temperate and boreal forests was estimated to have increased by a massive 21,000 million cubic meters. That’s enough to build a solid fence 1 meter high and 8 cm thick from the Earth to the Sun and back (or 7,500 times around the world). This increase in forest production is taking place despite growth in the volume of timber extracted from non-tropical forests to meet rising demand for wood products. Indeed in many non-tropical countries such as the USA, the main problem now is to find new outlets for the rising volume of timber becoming available. So in conclusion it can be said that all wood is ‘green’ as it stores carbon; some wood is ‘greener’ than other; some wood can be proven ‘green’; the ‘green’ credentials of wood are self-evident from science, but all wood is ‘greener’ than other building materials, provided it is responsibly and sustainably managed and legally harvested; and the bottom line is: “Wooden furniture stores carbon & well designed furniture may store carbon longer”

SVLK to be at the heart of the timber industry in Indonesia by Michael Buckley,
Wood Industry Consultant
Indonesia has a thriving timber trade with the EU; 15% of Indonesia’s wood exports go to the EU with the UK being the largest single importer. Indonesia has worked hard to implement its timber legality assurance system (known in Indonesian language as SVLK), which is now up and running and ready for an independent audit. A seminar held during the international furniture fair IFFINA in Jakarta was organised to raise awareness of the system and to assist SMEs in the wood
T
industry to get ready for timber legality certification.
hroughout the seminar, which was well attended by mainly Indonesian delegates, the point was made thatthe SVLK is credible because it is based on Indonesia’s own legislation, and the country has full ownership. The event was opened by Indonesia’s Furniture Industry and Handicraft Association (ASMINDO) President Ambar Tjahyono who said that there were many questions with regard to the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR)
18
and Indonesia’s timber legality assurance system (SVLK), from producers and buyers, and he hoped the seminar would answer these. Key Speakers were drawn from Europe and Indonesia. Moderator Taufik Alimmi first gave each speaker an opportunity to announce their standpoint. Colin Crooks, Deputy European Commission Ambassador, said that “the EUTR is now in force and that is good news for Indonesia”, pointing
out that the burden of EUTR compliance is on the importer. “Indonesia is well ahead in Asia” he stated and confirmed his belief that the law will strengthen Indonesia’s trade with the EU. Rebecca Razavi, Deputy UK Ambassador to Indonesia, advised delegates that the UK is working with the trade to give confidence to buyers and has allocated a further £10 million for the third phase of the Multi-stakeholder Forestry Programme (MFP). It will be directed through ASMINDO to assist SMEs with local services. But this is still ‘work in progress’ and there remains a need to work together towards improved understanding. Another panel member, Aditya Bayunanda, the manager in Indonesia of WWF’s Global Forest Trade Network also focused on the importance of Indonesia’s SMEs, discussing the EU-Switch-Asia regional programme to promote sustainable production to help SMEs meet SVLK’s objectives. He stated that 80% of ASMINDO members are SMEs and WWF wished to assist 300 of them by 2015. On behalf of SVLK, Bayu Krisnamurthi, Deputy Minister of Trade Indonesia, affirmed “we love our forests and so SVLK is our own legislation and we are grate-
ful for the support of our overseas friends, especially the UK.” He hoped that signature of the timber trade agreement with the EU would come in April and that there would be no delay as “we need to get an advantage from SVLK while we are ahead. There are 27 countries that I have to convince so I will start with buyers, not politicians,” he added. He concluded by suggesting a list of problems to address, be drawn up in order to campaign and promote the benefits of SVLK internally. Ibu Diah Raharjo, MFP’s Programme Director traced the history of SVLK with a promotional video of interviews which suggested that there is already a comprehensive understanding of the system. Opening a panel discussion moderator Taufik Alimmi described SVLK as “on a long journey” and thought that wood must explain itself, “because it is important, but its harvesting has a high impact.” Dwi Sudharto of the Ministry of Forestry provided comprehensive statistics of Indonesia’s trade and fight against illegal logging which, he stated “is now showing a declining trend”, even though there were still a significant number of 100 cases in 2011. “Malaysia – Sarawak steals our wood” he said (perhaps referring to the shared border area in dense tropical forests of inland Borneo) and again emphasised “SVLK
is credible because Indonesia created it, not the EU. It has had a long journey but now 12,120 V-legal documents have been issued to 125 destinations as at 12 March 2013” and he closed with a plea for further progress to be made. Deputy Ambassador Colin Crooks added that SVLK shows that timber products have been made under Indonesian law and that “importers know that Indonesia is now low risk, not no risk, but low risk.” It is necessary to give the market full confidence through the SVLK system and “we believe it will give Indonesia a very healthy export trade,” he concluded. Andy Roby, UK/EU FLEGT Facilitator based in Jakarta, stressed the need to cover all trees with SVLK and said that “promotion is key”. He also explained the strengths of the process, saying that “the T in FLEGT is trade which is the real innovation in this European initiative. FLEGT is about working with our vital trade partners to reduce illegal logging in ways that benefit everyone.” He concluded by talking about the progress being made by trade partners such as Australia, China, Japan and Korea. Jajak Suryo Putro of Java Furniture discussed the reasons for certification and explained that “we have gone from a green trend to a mandatory system of certification from which there are positive benefits,” presumably referring to the V-legal system now in
The EU and Indonesia agreed a Voluntary Partnership Agreement in April 2011 as a joint effort to combat illegal logging and related trade. Central to this bilateral agreement is a timber legality assurance system (SVLK). The system will ensure that timber products from Indonesia are produced and exported in compliance with the laws of Indonesia. All imports will be treated the same under the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) until the Indonesian VPA is ratified and operational; due diligence on FLEGT licenced timber is easier than the current due diligence required. The timber legality assurance system is described in the Agreement and is the basis for issuing FLEGT licences. As agreed between the EU and Indonesia, an independent assessment of the system will take place before the FLEGT licensing scheme becomes operational. In parallel, ratification of the EU–Indonesia VPA is expected in 2013.

place in Indonesia. During the Q&A session, questions were asked on the process to be followed before the VPA is implemented, how the EU importers cope, the possibility of SVLK group certification, how the SVLK can help buyer confidence and whether there will be a subsidy for SMEs. Dwi replied to the last two questions that “our data is real, showing the growth of exports since SVLK. We will try not to delay the VPA and we are asking for funding.” Mr Crooks added “The EUTR law and its implementation is the same for all exporting countries. We are convinced that Indonesia is low risk.” The Moderator interjected with the question “What happens in the meantime until VPA is implemented” to which Mr Crooks responded “All imports will be treated the same under the EU law.” The Moderator concluded with some key points. He stated that clarification on EUTR is still needed, but there seems to be a positive impact of SVLK as there is a market (for verified legal timber). He continued that, if accepted in the EU, then SVLK will be accepted in other countries, so everyone is waiting for the VPA to be implemented. He acknowledged that the system is far from perfect, but in the absence of VPAs elsewhere, there could be a switch by traders from, say, Vietnam to Indonesia, for example. The closing remark from ASMINDO was that “SVLK will be at the heart of the timber industry in Indonesia” and with that the workshop ended.

Wood-Mizer’s SLP II is an automated line made up of three sawmills connected by a material handling system. The SLP II line processes logs that vary in size from 10 to 40 cm in diameter and 1.2-3.6 m length into any square material, the timber generated utilised in a variety of applications with pallet lumber amongst the important outputs of the line.
The case history
Quite often businesses do not have a way to make a profit from low-value small logs. And in many cases, such logs are considered only good for firewood or mulch. With this problem in mind, in 2007 WoodMizer developed a system of products that could process small logs into a commercial product that is marketable and profitable. This first successful SLP line was made possible through the use of Wood-Mizer’s well-known narrow-band blade sawmill technology that they have employed worldwide since 1982. Narrow band (thinkerf ) blades conserve more raw material, require less energy, are cheap to purchase and maintain, and are the key to sawing small logs profitably. Dozens of SLP systems in operation around the world are proving the profitability of small logs every day. Through the feedback and suggestions Wood-Mizer collects from customers, the company has improved the SLP system by adding yet advantage crucial to profits – a reduction in labor requirements to run the system. The new automated SLP II line reduces the manpower requirements by two times: the line can now be managed by 2 or 3 people depending on the size of the material being processed.
Innovative design
“To automate the SLP technology we redesigned all the sawmills in the line, created one new machine and developed three types of conveyors – belt, roller and chain,” - says Roman Frontczak, director of Wood-Mizer’s R&D Department.

Twin Vertical Saw (TVS) unit’s function is to cut two slabs from the left and right sides of the log resulting in a two-sided cant. Six overhead spiked rollers ensure straight movement of the log through the saw.
Wood-Mizer engineers made four objectives their goals with the new system. 1. The whole line is controlled by one central operator’s station 2. Material flow through the system would be seamless and reliable 3. Cutting accuracy would be improved by more precise material
positioning Comprehensive slab removal would be integrated into the design Improvements in safety and operation of each unit in the line has been accomplished. For example, all the sawmills are now equipped with hydraulic blade ten4.

(right) The Single Horizontal Saw (SVS) is a brand new mill in the line. This machine comes after the TVS and the two-sided cants are fed into it by the same spiky-chain conveyor. Here, the third slab is cut off the bottom, resulting in three-sided cant. Once processed, the bottom slab is removed for further processing; the three-sided cant guided by special fences and roller conveyors into clamps that pneumatically position the cant from both sides before being resawed.

SLP II Overview
In the SLP II layout presented at LIGNA, the line operates in this way: • Log loading is made from an inclined ramp equipped with the chain log feeder. • Twin Vertical Saw. The first sawmill’s function is to cut two slabs from the left and right sides of the log resulting in a two-sided cant. The log is moved through the cutting heads by a spiky-chain conveyor. Six overhead spiked rollers ensure straight movement of the log through the saw. After they are cut, the two slabs drop directly onto an inclined chain conveyor that removes them for further processing. • The Single Horizontal Saw is a brand new mill in the line. This machine comes after the TVS and the two-sided cants are fed into it by the same spiky-chain conveyor. Here, the third slab is cut off the bottom, resulting in three-sided cant. The sawn log is moved on to an area where the bottom slab is removed for further processing, while the three-sided cant is guided by special fences and roller conveyors into clamps that pneumatically position the cant from both sides. • The HR500 Horizontal Resaw can be installed with up to six cutting heads depending on productivity requirements. In its maximum configuration, this resaw will produce six pallet boards plus one slab in a single pass. The material is positioned precisely by side pneumatic clamps and top pneumatic rollers that operate together to keep the three-sided cant secure during sawing. • After the HR500 the material handling system removes boards to the next stage in the production line. • The central operator console is installed at the beginning of the line. From here, the operator controls all sawmill functions and power switches.

Increase efficiency while decreasing costs
Wood-Mizer recommends that customers order the SLP II line after considering the size of the raw material which they are need to process. “Shorter log lengths require shorter conveyors which mean less metal is used and the equipment is then less expensive, features a more compact layout, requires less maintenance and therefore uses less energy,” Roman Frontczak shares. Wood-Mizer reports that installation of the SLP II line is fairly simple and is usually completed within two days. During installation, Wood-Mizer technicians ensure that each sawmill is properly adjusted. Wood-Mizer recommends that the system should be checked once a week during operation. “The demands of our increasingly modern global economy requires that all businesses make decisions to increase efficiency, and see how they can reduce costs in a smart way,” continues Roman Frontczak. “The automated SLP II line gives our customers an additional benefit by greatly reducing the necessary manpower as labor costs continue to rise.” The new automated small log processing technology is designed to assist wood producing businesses to become more successful and competitive in the markets they serve.

of SE Asia are a treasure house of raw material and hardwood products are a profitable export. This fine timber is sought after by customers throughout the world for furniture, flooring and decking. Companies work hard to provide the hardwoods to brokers and furniture and flooring manufacturers, but there is powerful competition. Top performing sawmills can consistently produce more lumber, higher quality lumber and market it more easily than ever before. There is impressive equipment enabling the harvesting of timber quickly, by single operators. Skidders, loaders & debarkers quickly move and process logs. Laser scanners and optimizers are used for accurate sawing, grading and tallying of lumber. Trade expositions that demonstrate of this type of technology draw great numbers of sawmill managers to the displays. Unfortunately it is not always easy to utilize this equipment. The first difficulty lies in the large capital outlay to purchase the equipment as well as to maintain it. The second major problem is the specialized training required to teach workers to operate these systems. What methods are used by the top tier producers that are economical, effective and need a minimum of training? What significant operations can be performed, without major technical training, by dedicated, responsible workers who take pride in their work? To help answer these questions we can use “benchmarking”: the process of evaluating and emulating the products, services and processes of best performing organizations in a business sector. This business management tool is described in the “Best Practices in Rubber Wood Process Industry-Thailand Competitiveness” by Suttapong Ketsaraporn & Zhilong Tian of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China*. If we look to high performing North American hardwood lumber producers as an example, we can determine what some of their best practices are and emulate the methods that would also benefit sawmills in Asia. Wood Protection is one area that can

be utilized everywhere and is used by virtually all hardwood producers in North America. Protecting hardwood veneer logs, luxury wood saw logs and freshly sawn hardwood lumber maintains value and improves profitability. The use of wax emulsion end-coatings is the primary method of wood protection used by top performing sawmills. End coatings, also called end sealers, are used to control the drying process of logs and lumber during storage, during transport, or for air- or kilndrying. This prevents costly cracking and splitting on the ends of freshly sawn logs and lumber. By eliminating end splitting, each piece of wood has more usable material: more wood products can be made from each piece of wood. There is less waste and more profit. Using an effective waxemulsion end coating is the most efficient method of coating the ends of logs & lumber. It is ready to use right out of the container and is easily applied by any worker
with a brush or sprayer. No technical education is required and training is quickly accomplished with any dedicated, responsible worker. Ninety percent of North American veneer loggers and sawmills use ANCHORSEAL end sealer. It prevents up to 90% of end checking (drying cracks). It is a safe, non-hazardous material that does not require special handling. ANCHORSEAL is shipped to Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and Australia as well as throughout North America. Many international companies order directly from the USA. Other companies join their timber associations or sawmill cooperatives to make a combined purchase. Still others purchase from a local ANCHORSEAL distributor. Whether exporting hardwood or processing hardwoods for domestic use, leading sawmills use end sealer to protect the quality and value of their wood, and to maintain the profitability and competitiveness of their business.

New Adhesive Application Systems for Wood Manufacturing Operations
W
ood working industries operations in different parts of the world are quite different depending on raw material, spices of wood, and products made. This becomes more obvious when you look at what kinds of adhesives are being used, except for PVAc glue that is used everywhere for furniture and some other productions for indoor use. In Europe, ex. or the northern hemisphere, most productions are using soft woods like spruce and pine. Most of the soft wood operations use Urea (UF), or Urea based adhesives (MUF) and Poly urethane (PUR) as long as we talk interior or exterior “normal” constructions (except for PVAc adhesive). There are always special cases like underwater constructions etc. When we move our lens to Asia, Australasia or the southern hemisphere, we find in general, much more hard woods and wood spices being used that demand very different adhesives from what is used in Europe. In these regions, EPI, PRF, and PUR (even if PUR still is used in a very little volume) are the most common adhesives (except for PVAc adhesive). When producing adhesive application systems it is therefore important to look at the specifics for each and every type of adhesive and in its specific location used. The different adhesives are very different in its specifications and behaviours and the impact of environment is also very different which for some of the adhesives has a very big importance. We are talking: temperature, moisture, viscosity, reology and acidity. After visiting Asia, Australia and New Zealand frequently from 1992 to 2008 and since 2008 permanently stay and producing gluing equipments for this region we know the situation. We started to design an all new program of glue application equipments for this region’s wood working industries and its specific environments in year 2008. Not only that. We first made a “re-programming” to design basic equipments and specific equipments to better fit into the Asian,

Australian and New Zealand type of wood productions. In Europe all machines must be totally automatic with PC interface, many with phone line connection to be able to do remote programming or check, but that’s not at all the case here. Issues like, understandable, easy to service = possible to service at sight, not too many and too complicated spare parts are vital, as well as affordable, so we implemented all these issues in our new designs. The fact that we produce in Indonesia with a few carefully selected (and educated) suppliers following our Swedish technology background and since 30 years experience in this business, contributes to a well made design, withholding a high quality, 3 years delivery guarantee (to be implemented from 2013-06-30), and a low price, 40 to 50 % less than of Europe or USA produced equipments plus the fact that the transport costs are a fraction. PT Mixonasia with Stefan Johansson as team leader produces several ranges of gluing installations for the wood working industry. The focus is Asia and Australasia but a growing number of inquiries from ex. Europe, South America and Africa will most likely very soon result in a creation of
a 2nd or even 3rd focus with separate market organizations not to lose any focus…. Finger-joint gluing is the most difficult gluing application but also our speciality. The issue here is mainly quality and to keep quality. The difficulties are to maintain the applied film even all through the gluing operation. • The dosing from the pump must be 100% linear. • Start and stop must be optimized to reduce or eliminate spillage. • The applicator nozzle, the “matrix” must work with the very small distance that is required between it and the wood in process. The distance, depending on application rate, should be between 0,10 to 0,25 mm, everywhere and all the process. Our range of finger-joint gluing applicators range from single component for profiles of max 40mm, mainly for furniture industry to 2-component units for profiles up to 250mm application width semi automatic until full automatic. Lamination gluing is a gluing operation where much money can be saved. The consumption of adhesive is large and
therefore optimizing the application will give profit very fast. We produce lamination applicators using most adhesives from very narrow up to 3,2m wide applications. We also do special designs ex, lamination of sound proof panels inside a 40 foot container.

President Director of PT Kota Jati Furindo:
ing PT. Kota Jati Furindo, one of the furniture industry in Jepara, Central Java, Yusak Setiawan assess the furniture industry will enter a stage that is much more difficult than the previous time. “It takes creative thinking and hard work over again,” he explained.
en | According to the Founder, Owner and President Director of PT Kota Jati Furindo , the company should be more active in designing and developing products. “It should be very innovative design turnaround so fast especially today,” he explained. Companies located in District Mlonggo, Jepara, initially producing crafts and indoor furniture. Has now spread to many sectors. Since late 1995, the company also started producing outdoor furniture. “Over the ten years to 2005, the furniture is experiencing tremendous boom,” he continued. Product market is not only in the U.S. but also Europe. Along with the end of the heyday, outdoor furniture began to flood the European market. Then switch to the Asia region since the past four years, since the outbreak of the economic crisis in the Euro zone. “Singapore, Taiwan, Japan and China are the four Asian countries are now our current market,” he explained. “Now we also are starting to re-supply the U.S. market,” he continued. Kota Jati Furindo of experience, market development factors become one of the critical. “The change is happening so fast that it should be able to switch from one market to another in a short time,” he explained. Foresight demanded a deeper look at the market. This is related to the product that the company developed. The most fundamental question is to market any product that will be sold. That’s why he has to constantly monitor which countries are like wooden furniture products. Because “Not all countries like wood furniture products, also needs to be seen how the purchasing power of consumers,” he continued. All it requires cooperation and close communication between the Kota Jati Furindo with buyers and tradernya. According to him, “are the ones who diligently follow the international furniture exhibition or in the region,” he said. From this they can
get some information about which products are popular and will be favored in their respective markets. “We also can conclude that market any country can be developed, and any products that could be developed for this purpose,” he continued. According to him, the third region is the United States, Europe and Asia have the character and taste of each. In addition, of the size of the Asian market is also different from the size of Europe and the United States. In the design, the United States and Europe are very different total. Turnover in American design was more sluggish. Consumers ultimately tend to like the semi-classical design. While in Europe, the turnaround occurred much faster design. “More dynamic and changes very quickly and tend to trend toward natural,” he explained. “From there we tried to develop designs by following trends that are applicable,” he continued. Life cycle design in the United States relatively longer than in Europe. In addition, consumers are fond of the design which tends towards the classic, “The charge is also more ethnically dominated,” he explained. According to him, consumers in the Asian region also prefer ethnic designs that have a charge. “Finishing is also relatively robust compared with the general European natural love. U.S. consumers are more similar to Asia even finishing a very decisive character. Manufacturers must understand the true character of each market, “he added. There also were not changed for many years, the consumer preference for raw material or the type of wood used. For business this one, consumers in the U.S. and Europe still remain like teak and mahogany for outdoor furniture to indoor furniture. As for the consumers in Asia, teak is still a primary wood Majority of teak wood in the production turned out to produce considerable amounts of waste. This is a problem in it-

self, but since three years ago Kota Jati Furindo management decided to use it. Thus was born the waste product that is based on the furniture, flooring and building matrial which utilizes the waste. Now, these products are exported to Italy, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China. The strategy was prepared in Kota Jati Furindo there are two, namely market oriented to the market which has been running here and product oriented to enter the markets of certain countries. With these two strategies are expected to anticipate the dynamics that occur in the future. Once the company can allocate its resources efficiently and effectively. According to him, to this day as a whole was not a significant change. Moreover, following the crisis in the United States there is also a crisis in Europe. In the near future the European market has not moved in a positive direction. “I think in the next five years, the outlook is still very hard to get through,” he explained. That’s why he emphasizes it must be observant and diligent in opening markets in different countries growing economy. “Whether it’s China or Eastern Europe are increasing the purchasing power of the people”. Looking ahead, in the next five years, it will continue to develop products to follow the trend toward natural. This will be a
trend that is long enough. “This trend will be favored in many areas. In the United States this trend began favored in Asian markets and also become obsolete though still not widespread acceptance “, he said. Inevitably when the direction of development in Kota Jati Furindo design leads to more natural trend. He himself recalled if 1998 was a turbulent year that combines the performance of a company that is developing a growing international market and economic crisis which overthrew the value of USD against major world currencies. “It’s really a great opportunity and a booming period for the national furniture industry at the time. It seems it will not happen again. It was hard to get going again, “he said. When it supported Indonesia as a condition producing countries in crisis with its markets which are developing countries with consumer and importer economic conditions are increasing rapidly. Such condition is considered to be very profitable for producers such as PT Kota Jati Furindo . “If one happens factors are favorable, especially if they occur at the same time,” he continued. But he saw that this event is unlikely to happen again. “I think after the year 2010 is a period which is quite difficult for the industry. We must be very clever to survive,
“he said. If natural selection occurs, the industry can survive and exist at the end of the next five years will enjoy an increase in demand. “I think demandnya generally not too much, but because the supply has decreased a lot due to the many industries that fall during that period. I think the company that can exist within it will be able to reap the benefits “. in | Menurutnya, ketiga kawasan itu yaitu Amerika Serikat, Eropa dan Asia memiliki karakter dan selera masing-masing.
en | “The issue of branding we’re doing at the moment. We’re doing a good patent for the product or the company. We do not do that for all markets, but to a certain market. With China, we should be ready with the branding and patents. China is the largest producer and well-known to the speed of the copypastenya. Speed is incredible. So it is to be prepared before entering this market. For the European and American markets, it is hardly necessary. Each buyer or customer or importer has the character of each, so that each design is different “. in | “Soal branding sedang kami lakukan pada saat ini.

“Saya pikir setelah tahun

SVLK: Waiting Consistency Implementations en | Since late last year, PT Kota Jati Furindo entitled to be raised logo Legal Timber Verification System or SVLK. Certification was handed over in Jakarta on November 2, 2012 from the International Quality Certification PT Mutu Agung Lestari. According to Factory Manager M. Sahid, preparation of documents needed for a year to be able to achieve it. “Actually, internally preparation to acquisition requires only six months,” he explained. But Kota Jati Furindo takes longer because enroll vendors or suppliers that exceeded one hundred units. It is very diverse ranging from small and medium scale enterprises to home industry. According to him, for furniture industries that export products such as teak Kota Jati Furindo will be required should have SVLK. To obtain it, not just the company solely to meet the requirements set forth but also suppliers and vendors. The vendors are required to have a legal business. “The number of vendors that we cultivated during the approximately seven decades, and only about forties who has the business license” he explained. The vendor or supplier as craftsmen who did not quite make the export conduct of business requirements of legality and legal use of wood as evidenced by legal documents. To be able to meet the requirements of the Kota Jati Furindo provide assistance to the cost of obtaining a vendor permit proxies. The amount is not too big, but useful for the management of their business license include SIUP, TDP, Permits Disorders and TIN. Even if we say not great but because it amounts to about four dozens of ven-
dors, the numbers can not be said to be small again. While administrative personnel from the Kota Jati Furindo in this assistance program reaches seven people. After struggling to fulfill all administrative requirements are requested, and the cost is not small. According Sahid, endorsement fees ranging from surveillance until November 2015 and is expected to reach at IDR 72 million. This does not include costs for vendors and suppliers endorse it. Now, Kota Jati Furindo wait what concrete steps will be taken by the Indonesian government in implementing sustainability SVLK itself. in | Sejak akhir tahun lalu, PT Kota Jati Furindo berhak untuk menjadi penyandang logo Sistem Verifikasi Legal Kayu atau SVLK.

Teddy Hermawan,
Managing Director PT Sinar Baja Elektrik:
“Fokus ke
Engineering” 40
“
Jadi langsung take over mereka,” jelasnya. “Jadi historisnya pun sangat jelas,” kata Teddy.

Teddy, pihaknya menyuplai sejumlah brand terkenal seperti Harman & Kardon.
Kalau kami pelanggan cukup colok satu kabel. Cukup plug and play.

Mengkampanyekan Kayu Balsa “KTI sedang gencar-gencar mengkampanyekan penggunaan kayu balsa.

48
jadi sempurna.
“The product speak for itself”.

Alasannya sangat jelas.

EFC, in cooperation with the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) will host a week-long programme of events including a conference, workshops and visits to be unveiled shortly. Up to 200 delegates are expected to participate from all over the world, with a special emphasis placed on attracting strong representation from forest sector representatives in Asia. PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification system, and it continues to make great strides in Asia. Building upon PEFC’s endorsement of Malaysia’s certification system, the assessment is now underway for endorsement of China’s certification system. Additional progress is ongoing in national certification system development in a number of countries including, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Myanmar. Alongside national system growth is an increase in private sector interest for pursuing Chain of Custody certification, stimulating further demand for certified forest products. PEFC hopes to further cultivate this positive dynamic by hosting its annual event in the asia region and putting the spotlight on issues of importance for the region.
For furniture export, the uniformity wood color is the main quality factor for outdoor or indoor furniture made from teak. The environmental issue deal with global warming is also the important requirement of furniture exports to US and Europe.

Speaking at the organisation’s Geneva headquarters PEFC’s Secretary General, Ben Gunneberg said “The Malaysian Timber Certification Council’s scheme, MTCS, was the first natural forest management certification standard in a tropical country to be endorsed by PEFC. Malaysia is a leader on tropical forest certification both in the region and internationally, and it is therefore most fitting that we meet in Kuala Lumpur this year. Our event is designed to catalyse and support further developments on certification in the region and we very much look forward to welcoming a diverse group of representatives who share our commitment to advancing sustainable forest management.” Further details will be announced at www.pefc.org

Making excellent uniformity color furniture, high quality wood with uniform color is necessary. That’s why we must have wood in big volume, because we have to select the uniform color and reject many different color wood that resulting high cost on production.
The increasing price of teak and other Javanese hardwood, but the price of export furniture is very competitive making us as industrialists need to do some tricks to push production cost without sacrificing quality for export. One of the tricks is selecting economical material be equal with wood bleaching process. Dubai WoodShow – April 2013
2013 NHLA Convention Registration Is Now Open
Post Show Report By Turnstone Singapore
The 8th International Wood & Wood Machinery Show (Dubai WoodShow) was officially opened by Engineer Essa Al Haj Al Maidour, President of the Society of Engineers - UAE, attended by visiting foreign dignitaries that included H.E. Ngole Philip Ngwese, Minister of Forestry and Wildlife for Cameroon; H.E. Henry Djombo, Minister of Sustainable Development, Forest Economy and Environment for the Republic of Congo; Mariteuw Chimère Ndiaw, Executive Officer, African Model Forest Network and Franz-Josef Bütfering, President, EUMABOIS. The show in numbers
The show, the largest ever and about one third larger than in 2012, took place at the International Convention & Exhibition Centre, in a greatly improved economic climate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and particularly in the trading hub of Dubai itself. Many of the 200 exhibitors with over 500 brands from nearly 40 countries reported a positive improvement in business prospects for hardwoods, softwoods and panel products. The increase in both the number of exhibitors and the total floor space of 13,000 m2 for the 2013 show is said to be in line with the rising demand for hardwood lumber in the region, which is projected to reach an estimated USD150 million in 2013, growing approximately 16% per year. The event is being positioned to complement the industry’s continuing efforts to encourage the use of more wood, in keeping with green and sustainable building and construction government policies and practices. The show this year featured international pavilions hosted by participating countries including the USA, Canada, Germany, France, China, Malaysia, Cameroon and

Congo.
From the Chairman
“We are very pleased with the overwhelming response that we have received during the opening of this year’s ‘Dubai WoodShow’. This is the largest edition of the show’s eight year history, which we have carefully planned and implemented to cater to the demand for a bigger venue where traders and professionals can develop more awareness on the significance of wood as an essential building and design material,” said Dawood Al Shezawi, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. “We are also looking to involve more players from the construction industry and their related sectors and encourage them into increasing their use of wood for their respective projects.”
The national pavilions from overseas
The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) pavilion with twenty members, including the Hardwood States Group exhibiting, was by far the largest overseas material supplier. The American Softwood Council (SEC) was a key exhibitor and the USA provided two key hardwood speakers at the seminar on day two. The American Softwood Council has been a regular exhibitor at the WoodShow for the last several years. Craig Larsen, President of the SEC, based in Portland Oregon, said that the show had been a good one due to its diverse group of participating members. The French pavilion, led by the association French Timber, included leading export companies offering softwood, hardwood, plywood and veneer. Of the dozen exhibiting, most expressed satisfaction with the quality and level of enquiries. The Canadian contingent of nine, mainly Frenchspeaking from the Quebec Province represented by the Quebec Wood Export Bureau, were satisfied with the outcome of the show saying that this is the primary show for the region. The Chinese contingent listed nearly seventy companies and organisations, many of which exhibited in the expansive Chinese pavilion. The African presence was impressive with a host of personnel engaging with the show, the seminar, a large pavilion and by Cameroon hosting an evening voyage with dinner for exhibitors on a local craft. “We were highly
impressed by the display of technology, the massive presence of major companies and the numerous interactions and stakeholders of the industry at this year’s event,” said H.E. Ngole Philip Ngwese. In addition to Cameroon, exhibitors from Africa included Congo, Ghana and Ivory Coast. As in previous years, the Malaysian pavilion was led by the Malaysian Timber Council’s Dubai-based Director Khairul Anwar and his team.
United Arab Emirates (UAE) based enterprises
In all over forty UAE-based companies were represented at the show. The most prominent of the local UAE companies, with a massive stand at the main entrance, was Singapore-owned Farlin Timbers based in Jebel Ali Free Zone, offering a full range of wood materials and dealing in the Middle East and African markets. Also distributing a full range of wood and nonwood products and high quality flooring and veneers was Chabros International Group with Headquarters in the Techno Park in Jebel Ali and fourteen branches across the region. Among the local wood product exhibitors were a number of notable high-profile, wood supply companies operating in the region, among them Saleh International LLC distributing to fifteen countries throughout the Middle East and PVS International specialising in chain of supply management with five sourcing offices around the world.
“A more buoyant economy and confidence”
In conclusion, this was an improved show on the previous year, benefiting from a more buoyant economy and confidence among the wood industry that the region is poised for further growth in new and restarted commercial, hospitality and residential projects. It is generally agreed that this will increase the demand for wood products. With this in mind, organisers Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions have already booked additional space for 2014. The next Dubai WoodShow will take place 8-10 April 2014.
The 2013 NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase will be held 2 – 5 October in Fort Worth, Texas. Details about the event can be found at www.nhlaconvention.com. First Ever Southeast Asia Furniture & Interiors Show in September 2013 IFMAC 2013: Time to invest Production Machines

SEAFIE 2013 - Mid-to-high End Furniture & Interior Brands
K
UALA LUMPUR, May 2013: UBM’s first ever furniture and interiors show in Southeast Asia - Southeast Asia Furniture & Interiors Import-Export Exhibition (SEAFIE) will be held in Kuala Lumpur, at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) from Sept 13 to 16, 2013. SEAFIE will complement the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF), held in March every year, and other UBM industry shows, notably Furniture China which is the largest furniture expo in the world, Index Fairs in India and UK Interiors. This exciting new show will cover gross exhibition space of 45,000 sq metres and feature the international mid- to high-end brands of home and office furniture, interior design products and soft furnishings. SEAFIE is targeted to draw 300 exhibitors and 20,000 buyers from all over the world. The four-day fair will be organised by

the same professional team behind MIFF, which has 19 years of proven track record and in-depth market knowledge. “The timing is ideal for the launch of SEAFIE in light of the changing market environment. Based on in-depth market research by UBM, September is a key second buying season for furniture and interiors buyers worldwide these days,” said MIFF Chairman Datuk Dr Tan Chin Huat. Another booster for SEAFIE is the expanding Southeast Asian market itself because of its 600 million population and growing middle class customers. While furniture and fittings exports from Southeast Asia have been on an uptrend, imports too have increased significantly due to growing purchasing power and demand for branded high quality lifestyle products. “SEAFIE will be a fantastic opportunity to tap into this market for manufacturers, designers and distributors of mid- to high-
end furniture brands focusing on design and interior furnishings,” Tan added. “We are also targeting 20,000 buyers from all over the world. There will be lots of trendy purchases and exciting deals for contract buyers, proper developers, project managers and interior decorators.” Kuala Lumpur’s strategic location in the heart of Southeast Asia and excellent air and sea links will make SEAFIE a leading platform for import and export to and from Asean. UBM is Asia’s leading exhibition organiser and the biggest commercial organiser in China, India and Malaysia where it manages over 150 industry shows. ituation of the global economy may be stagnant, even in two years come forward. But that does not mean the furniture industry will stop investing, especially in the purchase of new production machinery. Just look at the new IFMAC 2013 that was held in late May at the Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran. The exhibition, which lasted for three days it was able to suck visitors, since the first day of the course. Visitors on the first day it came from out of town a lot, such as Surabaya. Those interested in the average production machines with new, more sophisticated level of efficiency of use of raw materials is high. Gracia Mulya, for example, presents the machines and brush sander BSA brand. Such machines were able to siphon attention of visitors, but the location is in the back line boothnya. Machines and brush sander is not sophisticated production tools, but it is appropriate and necessary by the industry involving furniture or panel in its production profile. With this kind of machine, not just the production process could be shortened to one item. But also will increase the amount of production in the same time frame, when compared with manual work processes. Be appropriate when the current is used to invest on production equipment that can increase the capacity of the product, as well as streamline the time and the use of raw materials. Even though the world economy is predicted to not be improved in the next two years.

Biz News MY FLEGT VPA is finalised and signed. The MYTLAS covers all the elements under the requirements of the EUTR (as the EUTR was formulated to support the FLEGT VPA process). The MYTLAS, after testing, we hope, will graduate into the FLEGT VPA Legality Assurance System for Malaysia once both parties sign and ratify the VPA.
Malaysian Timber Legality Assurance Scheme (MYTLAS) What is the Malaysian Timber Legality Assurance Scheme (MYTLAS)? Much is currently spoken about ‘legal verified’ forestry schemes in Southeast Asia at the moment, particularly in the light of the new European Union Timber Regulation that has come into force. MYTLAS is the Peninsular Malaysia Timber Legality Assurance System and the following information was provided by the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC): What is the origin of the MYTLAS? Malaysia continues to negotiate with the EU on a FLEGT VPA, which is in the process of being finalised. Malaysia is committed to concluding the FLEGT VPA negotiations later this year. The MYTLAS is based on the current status of the Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS) under the EUMY FLEGT VPA. Does this mean the MYTLAS is the FLEGT VPA? No, but the mechanism that is being implemented under the MYTLAS is based
58
on the current status of the EU-MY FLEGT VPA negotiations. Does this mean the MYTLAS is EU-endorsed? NO. The MYTLAS is NOT EU-endorsed as Malaysia is still in the process of finalising the FLEGT negotiations with the EU. The EU is fully aware that Malaysia is currently in the process of testing the MYTLAS, currently involving only exports from Peninsular Malaysia to the EU. This testing of the MYTLAS exercise is purely a Malaysian initiative. If Malaysia has not signed the VPA, why is it testing the MYTLAS? The main reason for testing the MYTLAS is so that Malaysian exporters to the EU may offer the MYTLAS to EU importers as Malaysia’s Due Diligence efforts in meeting the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation whilst Malaysia finalises its FLEGT VPA. The Government of Malaysia through the Ministry of Plantation Industries &
Commodities is the government authority negotiating with the EU on the EU-MY FLEGT VPA. MTC, the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), and the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia are amongst the key organisations involved in the negotiations. The MTIB is the government body currently in charge of Malaysia’s timber export licensing system. Under the EU-MY FLEGT VPA negotiations, the MTIB is entrusted to put into operation the Malaysian Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS) which encompasses several other elements as required by the FLEGT VPA process. The MYTLAS being tested currently is the implementation of this TLAS on the ground and MTC is confident that the MYTLAS will meet the Due Diligence requirements under the EUTR. In order to distinguish the two processes between the FLEGT VPA and the EUTR, we have abbreviated our TLAS to MYTLAS i.e., Malaysian TLAS. The intention to test the MYTLAS will be to offer it as Peninsular Malaysia’s form of Due Diligence in the interim, at least for the EUTR, until the EU-
The testing of the MYTLAS This commenced in February 2013. Although the plan was to test some shipments from Malaysia in time for the entry into force of the EUTR on 3 March 2013, some unexpected delays occurred. What matters more is whether the MYTLAS addresses the key elements of the EUTR. A Compliance Audit is currently being carried out in Malaysia. Most will be aware that there are currently 2 Application processes via MTIB running in parallel to cater for varying procedures for different product sectors. MTC has advised on the need for a standard application process for all timber products destined for export under the MYTLAS and expressed a preference for Application Form B as this Form provides most of the information expected under the EUTR. MTIB is in the process of upgrading its online application system and until this is finalised, the current MYTLAS application process is being conducted manually. Until there is evidence that the MYTLAS is acceptable as an interim measure under the EUTR or EU-MY FLEGT negotiations finalised, MTC has advised Malaysian companies that they have no option but to adhere to the Due Diligence requirements of the EUTR. Most Malaysian companies should not face any problems in applying for a MYTLAS and providing the information that the MYTLAS process or the EUTR requires (i.e., source of materials, likely species etc). Most importantly, they should focus on showing that the products are at least legally sourced (originating from legal sources) if not certified sustainable and all legal provisions in terms of taxes, royalty etc., have been complied with. MTC will continue to advise Malaysian companies as much as possible through this process but advise all of those who are certified CoC holders to actually utilise them as the safest option. The MTCS achieved PEFC-endorsement in May 2011. A total of 4.64 million hectares of forests in Malaysia are PEFC-certified, the bulk of which consist of the 8 Forest Management Units (FMUs) on Peninsular Malaysia, totalling 4.58 million hectares. Hence,

Low/Negligible Risk category under the EUTR. For the purposes of the EUTR, it is safe to assume that logs and timber from non-certified log resources such as stateland forests and alienated land areas are still legally harvested as all log movement in Peninsular Malaysia are accompanied by Removal Passes. For the purposes of the EUTR, all Malaysian companies are advised to use the MYTLAS when exporting to Europe, even if exporting PEFC-certified materials (declared on the MYTLAS). The MYTLAS is
backed by the Government of Malaysia in ensuring that timber and timber products exported from Malaysia are produced in line with the applicable national laws and legislation, as required by the EUTR. MTC will continue to keep its stakeholders informed of the MYTLAS in the near future. In the meantime, for further assistance and opportunities for feedback on the MYTLAS, please contact: council@mtc. com.my

Malaysian Wood in the Gulf
The Gulf region of the Middle East, particularly the trading hub of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, has shown remarkable resilience in recovering from a severe economic and property downturn and price collapse just a few years ago. Today construction activity is buoyant and the Gulf is benefiting from an influx of new capital and consumption by those fleeing from the political turmoil elsewhere in the region. A well-attended Dubai WoodShow in April was also one of the beneficiaries, at which Malaysian wood industries were represented.
wood products including furniture was valued at MY1,201 million (US$395 million). He also confirmed the general view, widely expressed by many residents and the business community of Dubai, that there has been a huge improvement in the economy and one that is now more sustainably anchored than the former speculative market that collapsed at the time of the global financial crisis. The UAE is the largest market in the GCC for Malaysian sawn lumber at MY112 (US$36.8 million). “Promoting Wood Solutions in the GCC” was the title of a one day seminar held during the show. It aimed to explore and promote wood solutions in the design and construction sectors, addressing trading issues in the morning and technical issues for architects and contractors in the afternoon. The MTCC and its endorsement by PEFC was presented by Yong Teng Koon, CEO of MTCC who gave the background to the development of Criteria and Indicators for tropical forests and discussed the need to demonstrate SFM on the ground for different types of forest. He described the MTCS and its original objective to create and develop a voluntary, independent certification scheme for natural and plantation forests in Malaysia. He explained the endorsement by PEFC, how it works and its acceptance by governments of the 4.65 million ha now PEFC certified and the 198 Chain of Custody certificates that have been issued to Malaysian companies. He
concluded by calling upon the LEED green building rating system to give credit to the efforts of the forestry sector by accepting PEFC equally as FSC certified wood – currently the only scheme to qualify for LEED points. “The Middle East – a key market for Malaysia” was presented by Mr Anwar for MTC, who described the wood products of Malaysia and the work of MTC. He discussed the standard specifications for lumber and defined the Malaysian Grading Rules; as well as providing details of the availability of Malaysian plywood and panels. He continued with a details of the main species exported to the GCC and their uses. Turning to the market, Mr Anwar demonstrated the fall in volume from 2008 to 2011 and the encouraging upturn in the GCC during 2012. He also indicated the improvement developing in other Middle East markets and concluded by outlining the benefits of Malaysian timbers. MTC’s continued commitment to the GCC countries is evidenced by the promotional programmes it has lined up for promoting Malaysian timber products to the market. In 2013, apart from the Dubai WoodShow, MTC will also be participating in Gulfbid (Bahrain, May 2013), Building Erbil (Iraq, September 2013) and the Cairo WoodShow (Egypt, October 2013). There is also a Marketing Mission to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE planned for December 2013.

•
For burr removal after lamination and veneering.
•
For structuring wooden and other surfaces with feed speeds of up to 30 m/min.
For sanding composite workpieces having a surface which cannot be reached by common surface and profile sanding machines.
•
For smoothening filler and lacquered surfaces.
