Recommendation István Bogár’s series of movements intended for youngsters is colourfully instrumented, evocative music, rich in melodic invention; in character it is most closely akin to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet music. In the opening movement (Little march), which is in trio form, little boys wearing paper shakos on their heads and carrying wooden swords play at soldiers. The following movement, Humming, is the only movement in the suite that is calm and in odd-numbered rhythm; in it the children gather flowers in their little baskets, and meanwhile hum pleasant tunes. The third movement (Funny game) is an exciting little three-part form including variations. It is a funny game, with its tempo sometimes speeding up, sometimes slowing down, but by the end really going wild. The title of the finale is Game of tag. The tiny formal sections and interludes in this lively, cheerful music are linked together by a recurring rondo theme, and the chase ends with a brief coda. The original instrumentation was expertly supplemented by László Zempléni with the missing parts, to make it playable by a full concert band. Károly Neumayer

Ajánlás Bogár Istvánnak az ifjúság számára készült tételsora színesen hangszerelt, dallami invenciókban bővelkedő, hangulatos zene, karakterben leginkább Csajkovszkij Diótörő című balettjének rokona. A triós formájú nyitótételben (Kis induló) kis fiúcskák papírcsákóval a fejükön, fakarddal a kezükben katonásdit játszanak. A rákövetkező Dúdoló az egyetlen páratlan ütemű, nyugodt tétel a szvitben, ahol a gyerekek kis kosarukba virágot szednek, s közben kedves dallamukat dúdolgatják. A harmadik tétel (Tréfás játék) izgalmas kis variációs, háromtagú forma. Tréfás játék az egyszer gyorsuló, máskor lassuló, de a végére mégis szilajjá váló tempóval. A finale címe: Fogócska. Ebben a tételben aztán nincs megállás! Csupa lótás, futás, szaladgálás, kergetőzés ez a zene! Ennek az élénk tempójú, vidám hangulatú muzsikának az apró formai szakaszait, közjátékait egy visszatérő rondótéma köti össze, majd a fogócska egy rövid codával ér véget. Az eredeti hangszerelés hiányzó szólamait Zempléni László egészítette ki nagy hozzáértéssel teljes fúvószenekarra. István Bogár (1937–2006), after preliminary studies including piano, organ, accordion, trombone and composition, gained his diploma in composition at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, as a pupil of Endre Szervánszky. From 1957–68 he worked as a music school teacher; from 1968–72 he was deputy editor-in-chief at the Editio Musica Budapest; from 1972–76 he was the leading programme organizer for the State Philharmonia; from 1976–83 he was artistic secretary to the Hungarian State Orchestra; from 1983 he worked for Hungarian Radio as director of their musical ensembles. From 1988 onwards he occupied himself exclusively with composition and conducting, and in the meantime taught for several years at the Academy of Music in the department of further training for wind ensemble conductors. In 1989 he founded the Budapest Strauss Orchestra, as conductor of which he gave over 1000 concerts in more than 30 countries. As a composer he became known worldwide principally for his wind compositions (he wrote concertos for trumpet, for trombone and for tuba, for two horns and for trumpet and horn, and in addition composed many chamber works for wind instruments and works for wind orchestra), but he also wrote an oratorio, a cantata, choral works, folksong arrangements etc. His book entitled Brass Instruments, published in Hungarian in 1975, remains to this day a standard work on the subject. * * * Bogár István (1937–2006) zongora-, orgona-, harmonika-, harsona és zeneszerzés-előtanulmányok után a budapesti Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Főiskolán, Szervánszky Endre növendékeként szerzett zeneszerző-diplomát. 1957–68-ig zeneiskolai tanár; 1968–72-ig a Zeneműkiadó főszerkesztő-helyettese; 1972-76-ig az Országos Filharmónia vezető műsorszerkesztője; 1976–83-ig a Magyar Állami Hangversenyzenekar művészeti titkára; 1983-tól a Magyar Rádió zenei együtteseinek igazgatója. 1988-tól csak komponálással és dirigálással foglalkozott, közben néhány évig a Zeneművészeti Főiskola fúvóskarnagy-továbbképző szakán tanított. 1989-ben alapította a Budapesti Strauss Zenekart, amelynek karmestereként több mint 30 országban több mint 1000 koncertet adott és több lemezfelvételt készített. Zeneszerzőként elsősorban fúvós kompozíciói révén lett világszerte ismert (versenyművet írt többek között trombitára, harsonára és tubára, két kürtre, illetve trombitára és kürtre, valamint számos fúvós kamaraművet és fúvószenekari művet is komponált), de írt oratóriumot, kantátát, kórusműveket, népdalfeldolgozásokat is. A rézfúvós hangszerek címmel 1975-ben megjelent könyve mindmáig alap-szakirodalomnak számít.
