Winter 2008/2009 Dear Visitors, The Jizera Mountains have plenty to offer in winter in terms of sport, relaxation, entertainment and sightseeing. Downhill skiers are able to try out a number of ski centres and cross-country enthusiasts have more than 150 km of treated tracks to choose from. Or perhaps you can relax at a local spa or by taking a stroll through the snowy countryside. You might like to learn about our rich glassmaking tradition by visiting a museum or even a working glassmaking company. We can also invite you to plenty of interesting events taking place in the region. The largest and most attractive event this winter is the Nordic World Ski Championship, which is set to take place in Liberec in the second half of February. We hope the weather is with you and that your visit is an unforgettable one.

The Liberec Regional Council, together with the Compedium Company has prepared a BENEFIT Program Card for everybody who enjoys to be active on their holiday. The central part of the Jizera Mountains is something of a plateau. One upshot of this is that one of the most beautiful ski centres sits here at around 1.000 m, a centre that covers over 150 km of treated cross-country tracks and a place where the popular “Jizerská 50” cross-country skiing race has been held every year since 1968 (www.jiz50.cz). The “Jizerská magistrála” cross-country skiing network is one of the most often visited centres for cross-country skiing in the Czech Republic. The machine treatment of these tracks began in 1984 on the initiative of the organisers of the Jizerská 50 race, who wanted to allow all those participating in the race the chance to train for the competition throughout the whole winter season and not just on preparation days before the race itself. This idea was widely supported and the Jizera Mountains began treating cross-country skiing tracks for the general public. The “Jizerská magistrála” crosscountry skiing network has been treated by JIZERSKA o.p.s., a benevolent society founded by the village of Bedřichov, since 1999. This means that the “Jizerská magistrála” cross-country skiing network is treated throughout the winter season using money collected from dozens of minor and major sponsors and thanks to contributions from the Liberec Region, the cities of Liberec and Jablonec nad Nisou, the villages of Janov nad Nisou, Bedřichov and many more. If you are one of these sponsors, then we owe you our thanks. The “Jizerská magistrála” cross-country skiing network is currently around 160 km in length and is “updated” every year: in other words, we add a few more kilometres, a new access point or new services. The „Okolo Štěpánky” (Around Štěpánka) crosscountry track – 28 km of treated cross-country tracks; part of the “Krkonoše Mountains – Cross-country Skiing Paradise” project; direct connection to the „Jizerská magistrála“ cross-country skiing network.

The „U Čápa” ski centre – a treated circuit of 4 km in length – suitable for skating training; approximately 100 parking spaces. The Lázně Libverda Mountain Club hires a snowmobile and has undertaken to ensure quality conditions for cross-country enthusiasts in these two areas by regularly maintaining the tracks here when there is enough snow. THE MAIN ART NOUVEAU BUILDING

GALERIE BELVEDER

The main Art Nouveau building, which was built in 1904 by architect Emilian Herbig and originally belonged to the Zimmer & Schmidt export house, offers the best of the extensive collections at the museum. The permanent exhibition entitled „Kouzelný svět bižuterie” (the Magical World of Costume Jewellery) features the largest display of Jablonec costume jewellery in the world and the only exhibition of costume jewellery in the Czech Republic. Here you can also admire coins, medals and designer jewellery creation. The second exhibition here, „Čarovná zahrada – České sklo sedmi století” (the Enchanted Garden of Glass – Seven Centuries of Bohemian Glass), is the largest display of historic and contemporary glass in the Czech Republic. This maps out the story of Bohemian glass with a collection ranging from anonymous goblets to designer solitaire sets and features luxury glass and items of everyday use. However, the museum is able to offer so much more during the 2008/2009 winter period. The museum is preparing an exhibition by Ilja Bílek, professor at the J.E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, and his students from the Faculty of Applied Art and Design Jarmila Maturová, Tereza Chaloupková and Jan Surýnek. This exhibition, entitled „Transfúze” (Transfusion), will be staged at the turn of the year (17th October – 1st February). Lovers of magic and the supernatural will be interested in the second thematic exhibition at the museum, which is magically entitled „Šamani a čarodějové” (Shamen and witches), This engaging exhibition will allow you to enter the mysterious thought of the traditional peoples of Siberia, North and South America and Africa. The exhibition will display a large number of original ritualistic items, masks, clothing and magical shamanic attributes. This exhibition, which runs from 27th February to 17th May, was devised in cooperation with the National Museum – The Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Culture in Prague. There is also something for both kids and adults to enjoy in the form of creative studios on 4th, 5th, 8th and 10th December. Here you can enjoy the advent period and find out more about the Christian and pagan roots of the Christmas holidays.

You can also see part of the museum collection at the nearby Galerie Belveder. This late-Baroque, two-storey building with mansard roof is one of the oldest buildings in the town. The first references to this structure date back to the year 1773. The gallery is home to a permanent exhibition entitled the Empire Lounge and a display of a traditional local commodity – the glass button. The exhibition hall is dedicated to exhibits from the world of glassmaking and costume jewellery and from the field of local history and geography. We also have exhibitions for young children. We would also like to invite you to an exhibition entitled „Jak se rodí večerníčky aneb Jak vznikají pohádky” („How Večerníček is born” or „How fairytales are created” – „Večerníček” is a programme for children that is shown on TV every evening). This exhibition will take place from 24th October to 9th January. This is followed by an exhibition of carvings of Czech rulers and relief pictures by Jarmila Haldová from 29th January to 27th March. The gallery also arranges creative studios entitled Glass Underpaintings and Making Toys throughout the year. Here you can actually try out the techniques for yourself after reserving your place.

These are unique oblong houses with timbered of bricked downstairs and framed upstairs. A functioning historical water power station fed by the Smědá River water is located at the end of the village. Due to its exceptional acoustics and beautiful atmosphere, the church is used for organ and spiritual music concerts. To the Basilica also belongs the adjacent Franciscan Monastery, which finally underwent renovation in 2000 and is now used as the Centre for Spiritual Rehabilitation. (Renewable Energy Systems Engineering Company) It is found in a Norwegian log cabin with turf roof and solar panels. This cabin belongs to the municipality. The cabin is positioned right beside the fifth wind power station and can be comfortably reached on foot, by bike, by car, or by bus. The municipality rents the EIC out to RESEC, s.r.o., a local company that creates the background for the provision of information to the professional and lay public about the “Concept of an energetically self-sufficient area based on renewable sources”, about the “Biomass boiler plant”, about “Wind power plants” and about other developmental, environmental, and energyrelated projects in the town and the micro-region. Activity at the EIC mainly concentrates on the environmental education of children and youths in the form of school excursions and the organisation of work seminars.

Nature trail – Around Jindřichovice to the heights of ideals and the valley of the soul; this 12 km long path is suitable for walkers and cyclists. It leads visitors through an open-air museum and around a windmill and power plants, around the largest anthill in the Liberec Region and along the wall of a Romanesque chapel.

The museum displays the nature science, archaeological and historical exhibition of the northern Bohemia. Special attention is dedicated to the region’s textile production development, and another permanent exhibition deals with the progress of arts and crafts from antique times until present day. The museum’s oriental rug collection is the biggest one in the Czech Republic and significant is also the collection of current authors’ tapestries. The exhibition of mechanical musical boxes is definitely worth seeing, as the majority of the exhibited items are fully functional. The living Open-air Folk Museum in Jindřichovice pod Smrkem O.s. Here you will find examples of folk architecture, for example a reconstructed windmill, and exhibits ranging from large machines to dishes. Local produce is on sale and during a tour of the open-air museum you come to realise just how our predecessors respected nature and how environmentally-friendly their way of life was. You will also “step into” the history of the Frýdlant area. There are also weekend courses in traditional skills and crafts (basket weaving, cheese making, candle making etc.). We also have a library of environmental, spiritual and art literature. The windmill with turbine was built to help the Vlk family make their farmstead self-sufficient, even for processing grain. They were able to buy an existing windmill with turbine in North Moravia. The ready mill is therefore a combination of original windmill, an external structure reminiscent of a Dutch windmill and a rudder used for wind pumps.

The glass and costume jewellery museum introduces visitors to the history of glass production, which has a century-long tradition in the town. The main Art Nouveau building is home to the best of extensive collections of glass, costume jewellery, coins, medallions, and plaques. The museum also houses a specialised library that focuses on the history and present of the glass and costume jewellery industry, artistic glass and jewellery. There are two permanent exhibitions on view here about the past and present of Bohemian glassmaking, jewellery making, costume jewellery, and minting in Jablonec: the Magic World of Costume Jewellery and the Enchanted Garden of Glass – Seven Centuries of Bohemian Glass. These visitor-friendly permanent exhibitions offer visitors information at a number of different levels. The gallery building is found around 700 metres from the main building of the Museum. This late-Baroque, two-storied building is one of the oldest in Jablonec, with the first references to the place dating back to 1773. Down the years it has been home to a pharmacy, a garden restaurant, and the Belveder Inn. The exhibition hall area is dedicated to exhibits from the world of glassmaking and costume jewellery and from the field of local history and geography. The gallery also houses a permanent exhibition called the Empire Lounge and a display of 19th-century Glass Buttons. Other exhibitions are occasionally held here. You might also like to make someone happy with a small gift from the gallery shop – a glass figurine, perhaps, some lamp beads, a glass button, beads, or a period postcard. Galerie Belveder is home to an exhibition hall that is dedicated to various exhibits from the world of glassmaking and costume jewellery and from other fields. Schmelowskyho vila (the Schmelowsky’s villa), Opletalova 29 (Private object!). This second functionalistic villa designed by Heinrich Lauterbach was commissioned by Dr. Schmelowsky in 1933. The building’s shape resembles a boat. Kantorova vila (the Kantor’s villa), Palackého 26 (Private object!). The head physician of the Jablonec hospital - Mr Alfred Kantor- commissioned the building of his family residence 1933-1934 based on architect Heinrich Kulka’s functionalistic design. The Mining Museum Harrachov and the excursion shaft were opened at the level of former adit. Exhibited in the museum are samples of minerals from fluorite deposits, equipment and tools used for mining, maps and photo-gallery documenting works on the local deposit. It was established before 1712 on the Jilemnice estate of the Harrach earls. The traditional production process is still adhered to. A mini brewery with a restaurant were build directly within the glass-works grounds in 2002. From here you can view the furnace hall and the glass makers at work. In the glass-works is also situated the Museum of Glass, presenting historically and technically complete collections of historical glass from the production of this Harrachov glass-works. You can enjoy a spot of therapy in the calm and picturesque surroundings of the local beer spa together with a massage, a bath in a solid wooden bath, a bubbly beer bath or romantic privacy – absolute privacy for your spa procedure.

Železný Brod The Trávníky Tour, the tour takes in the historic surroundings of timber and stone buildings in the Trávníky monument zone and monument reserve, which is found in Železný Brod. The two stationary figures in the corners depict St. Barbara on the left, as the patron saint of miners (a mining settlement was founded in the valley here in 1528), and St. Christopher on the right, as the patron saint of the village itself. The other eighteen figures move. There is a night watchman who regularly lifts his horn while a dog runs around him. Then there is the most important activity in the village: feeding the animals (cows, hens and geese). This is followed by the regular procession of the twelve apostles that we know from the astronomical clock in Prague. The bell rings at the end to mark the time. After almost 100 years of operating, the glass-works was closed and Panský dům was rebuilt into a hunting lodge, which remains to this day. TOURIST ATRACTIONS AND NATURE HERITAGE The Jizera Mountains belong to the most beautiful tourist areas of Bohemia. You can enjoy a great holiday here during summer as well as winter months. Tanvaldský Špičák (831 m AMSL), Albrechtice v Jizerských horách 355. In 1909 was on the Špičák Peak erected a stone viewing tower. It was named the Jubilee Viewing Tower of Frances Josef I., and a year later a new chalet was added to it. The building gained its current appearance in 1930. Nisanka (676 m AMSL), Nová Ves n. N., Phone No.: 724 321 724 reservation necessary / This is a new, 36 m high metal viewing tower rising above the village of Nová Ves n. N.. The visitors can marvel at the wide view of the Jizera and the Giant Mountains from its 24 m high gallery. Kopanina (657 m AMSL), Rychnov u Jablonce n. TIPS FOR TRIPS, NATURE TRAILS Frýdlant area Historical - naturalistic Trail Nové Město pod Smrkem – this trail was opened in 1993. With its 27 stops, it is formed by three circuits - yellow (2.430 m), green (8.600 m), red (10.130 m). The trail passes through fascinating places of historical and naturalistic character in the city and its wide surroundings. It is well marked in addition to the information boards located along it.

Slovanka (820 m AMSL), Lučany n. N., Horní Maxov 8, Phone No.: 483 300 886, Mon - Sun 8 am – 7 pm The 11 m high tower was the first metal viewing tower built in Bohemia, as well as being the first tower erected in the Jizera Mountains. Designed by Vienna Wagner Company, located on the former Seibt’s Peak above Maxov. It was festively opened to the public on 14. 8. 1887. The viewing tower underwent extensive reconstruction in 2000, and has been declared a Unique Technical Heritage site. Štěpánka (peak Hvězda 958 m AMSL), Kořenov – Příchovice, Phone No.: 603 806 473, Tue - Sun 10 am – 4 pm / Its foundation stone was laid on 27. 7. 1847, however, the tower was completed and open to public much later, in 1892. The viewing tower is situated on the hill called Hvězda (the Star), in the German language referred to as Buchstein or Pocherstein.

Nature trail – Around Jindřichovice to the heights of ideals and the valley of the soul; this 12 km long path is suitable for walkers and cyclists. It leads visitors through an open-air museum and around a windmill and power plants, around the largest anthill in the Liberec Region and along the wall of a Romanesque chapel.

Yew-trees under Dračí skála (under the Dragon’s Rock) / Leads above the Fojtka settlement and is only few hundred meters long. It is a protected location of the coniferous European yew. The entire trail is set with nature trail marks and information boards. The markings continue all the way to the Zaječí důl (the Hare dale), newertheless, here they have the character of an outlook trail instead of the nature trail. The Sloupský stream waterfall – Velký and Malý Štolpich / You will find these two waterfalls above Ferdinandov, not far from Hejnice, as they fall through the valley in beautiful cascades. Velký Štolpich: the stream flows over a 30metre rock wall, creating a number of waterfalls and cascades. Take the path on the right and stop for a while at the memorial known as „Maiwaldova smrt“ (Maiwad’s Death), where Gustav Maiwald of Ferdinandov perished in the Velký Štolpich gorge under a sled. This tragic event is commemorated to this day by a cross next to the bridge beneath the waterfall. The Fojtka yew trees / A habitat of common yews. Oldřichovské háje (Oldřich’s Grove) and rocks / Two different paths: nature and the preservation of the area and a shorter path intended for children.

Liberecko and Jablonec nad Nisou

Smědava, Bílý Potok pod Smrkem / Very sought after by tourists, this secluded site with a mountain chalet located on the northeast slope of Jizera is on the crossroad of tourist trails. It is also a favourite place for refreshment and rest. It was built in 1935, in the place of the original chalet. In winter months, this is the last point from the Hejnice direction where the roads are cleared. In summer it is the tourist bus and in winter the ski bus which makes its way here several times a day. From the Tanvald direction along the Souš dam, the road is accessible only in summer. Waterfalls of Černý potok (of the Black Stream) / Not far from the village of Bílý Potok pod Smrkem (the White Stream under the Spruce), these are the most powerful as well as the most beautiful waterfall of the Jizera Mountains, breathtaking especially after rain. The best access to them is from Bílý Potok pod Smrkem, from the railway station following the tourist marking, or from Hejnice in the direction of the camp site following yellow and later green tourist marking.

A forest walk with Camille Rohan / A nature trail of almost 2 km in length near to the chateau park at Sychrov (the trail includes a newlyreconstructed forest arbour and a granite pyramid built to mark the visit of Emperor Franz Josef I), www.zamek-sychrov.cz New Nature Trail in the Liberec ZOO / This nature trail through the forest eco-systems of the Jizera Mountains will introduce its visitors to the history, nature and landscape of the Jizera Mountains. It was created on the occasion of this years 40. aniversary of establishing the Jizera Mountains Nature Reserve. Forest Nature Trail Harcov / From the bus stop No. 15 – Myslivna, 2,8 km long trail with 11 stops, for hikers and cycle tourists. The City Outlook Circuit – the Sun Trail – Liberec / It is a 3 km long walking trail through the city centre. Jablonec Outlook Circuit (15 km) / The route takes you through suburban forests and residential suburbs, offering beautiful views of the whole city valley. It links prominent landmarks and significant tourist locations, mainly the Petřín Peak, the favourite forest complex of the Black Well ridge, attractive dams and the Proseč Ridge. The Inner Tourist Circuit of Jablonec n. N. / 6,5 km long tourist trail leading through Jablonec n. N., linking interesting landmarks within the city. It starts at the City Hall Information Centre. Jedlový Důl / A nature trail leads though this Nature Reserve, drawing attention to the important animal and plant habitats of this area. The Jedlová Brook brings water from the peatbog na Čihadle. It overcomes a notable vertical interval and forms a three level waterfall in the picturesque forest ravine, known as the Waterfall of Jedlová. Follow in the footsteps of the mysterious Dr. Kittel Jan Josef Antonín Eleazar Kittel (1704 - 1783) was a famous physician from the Jizera and the Giant Mountains borderland. For his exceptional healing abilities, his readiness to help people and his wealth, he was suspected of liaising with the devil, even during his life. It was said, he used to fly to his patients at night on his cloak, and that he gained power over ravens with the help of his magical books. In his huge and mysterious house the “Burk” was an autopsy room, human skeletons, a greenhouse with precious herbs and even a hydrotherapy spa. To save his wretched sole, in his old age he commissioned to build a school next to “Burk”, a well with healing properties, a vicarage and a church. If you are interested in knowing more about Dr. Kittel and the area he lived and worked in, then visit the Kittel’s Area Nature trail”. Tanvaldsko Smržovka Outlook Circuit (12,5 km) / Long tourist trail leads along the picturesque neighbourhood of Smržovka (e.g. Nová Ves – Černá studnice – Berany…), local green-and-white marking, www.smrzovka.cz. Tanvald Outlook Circuit (10,5 km) / Long tourist trail will take you into the scenic Tanvald basin (Tanvald city centre, the outlook point Terezínka, the Peak Muchov, through Svárov to Desná and back via Horní Tanvald). Palacký Trail (20,5 km) / Route – Tanvald railway station - Svárov - Velké Hamry - Plavy, Haratice – Navarov Castle (from here you can take walk to the Navarov Chateau) - Jesenný, Bohuňovsko (here you can take walk to the Bozkov dolomite caves) - Podspálov - Železný Brod. Riegr’s Trail / Short nature trail leading along the Jizera valley from Spálov to Semily (or, of course the other way round). It will capture tourists, geologists as well as photographers, even admirers of railways will not be disappointed, because the old track winding its way along the river course goes through beautiful and unusually built tunnels. This is not a cycle path – the use of bicycles is prohibited on this trail! As with many other locations, it is best to come here on the train, so you do not need to walk way back to your car. It is more convenient – regarding trains – to walk upstream of the Jizera River, from Spálov to Semily, even

though the nature trail boards are numbered in the downstream direction. When walking in the upstream direction, the best is waiting for you at the end, giving you the motivation to make it to the trail’s end. The trail is of medium difficulty, however, definitely not suitable for young children or even prams. Nature Trail – the Burst Dam in Bílá Desná in the Jizera Mountains / Reminds of the catastrophic event of 1916 and gives information on the technical particulars of the Jizera Mountains water management. Jizerka / The highest-standing settlement and the most beautiful part of the heart of the mountains. The settlement is made up of around 12 buildings that are joined to civilisation by a well-maintained mountain road. The dominant feature here is the highest example of volcanic basalt rock in Central Europe, the hill known as Bukovec (1.005 m). There is a national nature reserve here, through which there runs a nature trail. A stream of the same name flows through Jizerka, as does the Sapphire Brook, which was once a renowned source of precious stones (sapphires, rubies, chalcedony, topaz etc.). You will find out a great deal about the history and natural riches of Jizerka and the Jizera Mountains by visiting the museum here, which is housed in the old school. Nowadays Jizerka is a popular place for all those that love mountain tourism. There is also

the famous “Hnojový dům” (Dung House) and its collection of curiosities from journeys all over the world. Unfortunately, this is currently closed due to the illness of its owner, world-renowned traveller Gustav Ginzel. You can, however, admire its beauty from the outside. Jizera Peat-bog / Velká Jizerská louka (the Big Jizera Medow) – is a National Nature Reserve in a shallow Jizera valley. Mountain Pine, juniper, spruce, Carpathian Birch grow here. It is the most precious peat-site and consequently a naturalist site of the Jizera Mountains. Peat-bog na Čihadle / Declared Nature Reserve since 1987. This is an upland peat-bog (the best known in the Jizera Mountains) situated on the watershed, complete with its peat spruce-woods and pools. There is an observation tower with all the relevant information on the beat-bog. It bears its name after čihaři (men,who used to catch migrating birds here). Waterfalls on Černá Desná / You can find this beautiful nature spot in nearby Desná. The red tourist marking will lead you to the Social Event House Sklář, here it turns left and carries on along the course of Černá Desná towards the valley of this mountain brook. The path was recently repaired by the Desná city and a new nature trail – the Waterfalls on Černá Desná was opened in September 2000. From there, you can make your way all the way up to Souš dam following the red tourist markings.
