Dát verdient een lintje! Februari 2004 “Mam, ik wil graag naar de Willem van Oranje om tweetalig onderwijs te gaan volgen”. Zo begon de middelbare schooltijd van mijn zoon Jeroen. En mijn tweede middelbare schooltijd. Natuurlijk vanuit een ander perspectief, maar ik heb heel wat keren gedacht dat als ik ook nog een keer naar school mocht, dat ik dan zeker voor het TTO zou kiezen. Gelukkig mocht ik als ouder actief meedraaien in deze nieuwe vorm van onderwijs en ben ik vanaf dag 1 betrokken geweest bij het vormgeven van het TTO. Begonnen in de resonansgroep, zodat school feeling kon houden met de ervaring van kinderen en de mening van ouders, want het is natuurlijk lastig om als school aan een nieuwe vorm van onderwijs te beginnen. Ik heb er altijd enorm van genoten om op deze manier bij school betrokken te zijn geweest en het zeer gewaardeerd dat school onze mening ook verweven heeft in het onderwijs. Vanuit de resonansgroep “groeiden” wij als ouders mee met onze kinderen en met school. In het tweede jaar ben ik zelfs mee geweest naar Colchester (en het jaar daarna weer, omdat mijn dochter dat ook gezellig vond). Vanuit de resonansgroep vervolgens door naar het stagebureau, omdat dat vanaf het derde leerjaar ontwikkeld moest worden. Heerlijk om al die jaren de plannen te lezen. Het mooie was wel dat je de eerste angst van ouders weg kon nemen, omdat ik als ouder van de eerste lichting TTO-leerlingen zowel die angst had als het vertrouwen dat met goede begeleiding de leerlingen dit ook aan konden. Zo is mijn zoon naar Hong Kong geweest en mijn dochter naar Canada. En heb ik meegenoten vanaf de zijlijn. Inmiddels hebben mijn kinderen afscheid genomen van de Willem en studeren zij beiden. Deze week zei mijn dochter nog dat ze inmiddels beseft dat het TTO een grote rol heeft gespeeld in haar ontwikkeling als mens: de uitgebreide kennis van literatuur voor het IB, het zonder moeite Engelstalig kunnen denken en spreken, het niet meer wakker liggen van het geven van een presentatie, de ervaring van de stage. Allen meer dan waardevol gebleken in hun huidige leven en iets wat ze altijd bij zal blijven.

Februari 2013 Ook voor mij was nu de tijd aangebroken om afscheid te nemen van de Willem. Met een traan, dat wel, want na 9 jaar was het een stukje van mijn leven geworden. Maar gelukkig zijn er nog vele ouders die het stagebureau met enthousiasme bemannen en kijk ik terug op een heerlijke middelbare schooltijd! Wie kan dit tenslotte twee keer meemaken Petra Verhagen

Special News A new face at the Willem Hello to my future colleagues and students! My name is Ruth Lyons and I hail from a village in the south of the Republic of Ireland called Ballyvourney. This is a small village but a significant one as it belongs to one of the few remaining Irish-speaking locales in Ireland, called Gaeltachts. The Gaeltacht Mhuscrai is an area were the Irish sport, arts and language is very much part of the active community and even though I have pursued a career in teaching English, I am still very much involved in the culture within my Gaeltacht. I attended Irish-medium schools and as such my first language is Irish Gaelic. I can also be referred to in my Irish name, Ruth Ni Liathain. I attended third level education in the second largest city in Ireland that is, University College Cork. Here, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Drama and Theatre Studies with English literature as a major. At this juncture, I unveiled my penchant for Elizabethan drama and this determined my next stage of study. I spent another eighteen months in UCC and achieved a Masters Degree in Medieval and Renaissance Literature; publishing a thesis based on the dramatic effects in the poetry of Edmund Spenser. I obtained my Postgraduate Diploma in Education from University College Dublin, where I became qualified to teach English both in the Irish and EU school systems. In Ireland, I have spent much time teaching drama to young children and co-coordinating Irish summer courses in my hometown. I spent eighteen months teaching English in China where I taught IB English in a very prestigious school in Beijing; Huijia IB Private School. Moreover, I began my teaching in China in the western city of Chengdu, Sichuan where I taught Oral English in a public school to classrooms of up to sixty students. My most recent school was located in Dalkey, South County Dublin were I taught English and History. This was a private girls’ school and I was teaching the Irish equivalent of the IB Diploma. My travels have now brought me to The Netherlands, the complementary cycling capital of the world. My next step in life is to integrate into Dutch society and the English Department in the William of Orange School. I will be teaching IB English A: Language and Literature; a challenging but highly beneficial programme that really allows students to exercise critical ability. I’m sure that my life experience and passion for English literature will ensure that I can integrate easily into the school faculty and more importantly, the English Department. I wish all staff and students a pleasant summer and I look forward starting the new school year with all of you. Ruth Lyons

On the 6 , 7 and 8 of February, it was time for the annual Model United Nations Alfrink. This is an annual simulation of the United Nations. For three days, students from several countries in Europe gather at Alfrink College in Zoetermeer to debate global issues. During the conference, students will be the delegates of the United Nations. So on Wednesday we were all set to go to our first day of MUNA! Beforehand we had to prepare our resolutions and acquire information about our country and our allies/enemies. A large part of our group was actually representing Canada, one of the most peace-loving countries in the world. It was going to be our job to try and stop any wars from breaking out. It was great fun to see everyone dressed up in fancy clothes. The atmosphere was great as the students from all the different schools met for the first time. The school had prepared opening ceremonies with guest speakers from different causes. I was very impressed by the Human Rights Defender Sylvestre Bwira. His message about fighting for human dignity was very touching. After the ceremony, it was time to start our first day of lobbying. There were some very strict regulations but in the end, I was able to put
forward a resolution on the non-profileration of weapons mass destruction.On day number 2, the debate finally started. There were some very serious questions and some less serious questions, so we were never bored. We had a great time and came to some great solutions. I had a lot of fun with the kind people there. But what we were all looking forward to was the MUNA party in the evening. The theme was “animals” this year, which lead to a variety of dog ears and cat tails. We got to see all the delegates in their normal clothes, quite a shock! The party finished at 12 o’clock, we
had to take a taxi home and finally made it there at 1:30. To say we were tired would be an understatement. The third day, we had to get up at 6:30 again to take the minibus to Zoetermeer. Unfortunately, I never made it there and had to stay home. Some of my ally delegates presented my resolution for me and kept me posted on the updates. In the end, my resolution had passed with some amendments! I really had an amazing experience at MUNA and wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Emma Breeman, V5A

Internship to St. Mary’s School Location : England, Colchester Period : April/May 2013 nd
On the 22 of April, I went to Colchester, England, where the private school St. Mary's School for Girls is situated. At this school I attended the art lessons, partly as a student and partly as a teacher. The lessons were given by Mr. Saunders to the girls attending senior school, which means the youngest were of an age with our first classes and the oldest were about sixteen years old. Of course most of my classmates and fellow bilingual education pupils remember St. Mary's. We aren't like to forget our first penpals. What I remember most from the school itself is that it was quite small. Well, the moment I set foot in the school again, I was quite amazed: it was even smaller that I remembered. That says a lot, since I am not very tall. The school has about 150 students, which is a very small amount for a school, and of course the girls wear uniforms. Now on to my internship: I didn't actually know what I was going to be doing in the lessons, but I did know it had to do with art. Also, I would be present during the period of the GCSE (final) exams for art. The girls had to create a piece of art about force in ten hours.
Of course they had already worked out all of their ideas in the lessons, but the real work had to be created in the classroom. I observed what they were doing and did my own painting, which was really great. The other eight days that I attended the school, I joined in with the art lessons (results of that: see the middle pictures) and did drawings of my own (see the other two), did some odd jobs and even taught year seven. They are of an age with our 'wuppen' and were working on composition, which meant that they had looked up references and put these in one big composition. They would come up to me with questions about proportions for instance, and I would have to come up with ways to explain what was wrong with their drawings. That was quite hard, but also lots of fun. I had a great time at St. Mary's and with the host family I stayed with, learned a lot and experienced the English culture. All in all, I can conclude that these two weeks have surely been a succes! Home Sweet Home Location: Nederland, Middelburg Period: April/May 2013 Like all the students in year five of the bilingual stream, I too had to go on an internationally orientated internship. I started asking around and searching for companies that might be interested in having me around for two weeks. After several futile attempts to get a place in all sorts of companies I became a bit desperate. One by one they all turned me down: no room, wrong time, I was too young, two weeks is too short and more of this. I already started to look for companies closer to home because in that case I would not have to worry about a place to sleep and that kind of stuff. Finally! My father heard from a colleague that the company MIRG EU, part of the VRZ (Veiligheidsregio Zeeland) situated in Middelburg, might be interested in having me for two weeks. So after a while it was settled and I could come for two weeks in the May holidays. Not really far away but I was really happy to have found something. th I started Monday the 29 at half past eight so my alarm clock went off at six o’clock. When I got there I was given my own computer and they showed me around the building. The building was divided into parts in which different organizations were situated. I got to know some of the personnel of MIRG EU and of the other companies in the building but because it was a school holiday not everybody was present. The MIRG EU was organizing a meeting for which all kinds of document had to be translated either from English into Dutch or from Dutch into English. They gave me that task so for the rest of my internship I have been translating document about fire- fighting routines and discipline rules and regulation measures. During my lunch breaks I went into Middelburg a few times just to look around. In the evening I went
I forgot to take a picture because we were having so much fun just being there. back home only to go to Middelburg again the next morning.I really learned a lot from the translating but it was a bit boring sometimes. Because of that my father had arranged for me that a former volunteer of the fire brigade of Middelburg, who also works at the VRZ, would show me around the fire department. So on the last day of my internship we drove there and I got to meet fire-fighters, drive in a fire truck and they even let me use a fire hose. Unfortunately we totally forgot to take a picture because we were having so much fun just being there. That was already the end of my internship and although it was hard work (from 8.30 to 17.00 every day) I really missed it the first couple of days. I also still miss the people there because we just had such a good time together. I’m still extremely thankful to all the people that helped me first finding a place for my internship and then making my internship an unforgettable experience. Mirthe Troost V5

Introduce the reader to the company you stayed with (what kind of company) Write down what you had expected from your traineeship and mention whether these expectations came true. Describe what you did and how successful you were in your work. Provide evidence of your work if possible. Say what you learned about the company and the type of work you did. Say to what extent you have benefited from the experience.

This report will also be forwarded to the people you worked with. The report must be in English. It must be between two and four pages long. Your report must be handed in six weeks at the latest after having ended your traineeship and should be assessed as sufficient. In case the assessment is insufficient the school may provide you with an alternative or complimentary assignment. This will happen after consultation between your mentor, the team leader and the coordinator TTO upper school.

Do’s and Don’ts
Begin op tijd met het zoeken naar een stage! Praat veel met familie, kennissen en vrienden over je stage. De ervaring leert dat er iemand binnen je kennissenkring wel weer iemand kent die wellicht belangrijk voor het vinden van een stage adres kan zijn.

Aandachtspunten tijdens de reis
Tijdens de stage kom je in contact met bedrijven en instellingen. Wees je er van bewust dat je op dat moment het visitekaartje van de school bent. School en leerlingen hebben alle belang bij een positief beeld naar buiten toe in verband met toekomstige stageplaatsen.
Gedraag je op het vliegveld en bij de douane. Sinds de aanslagen van 11 september 2001 zijn de veiligheidsmaatregelingen verscherpt en verzwaard. Het zou zeer vervelend zijn als jouw gevoel voor humor jou en je medereizigers in vervelende situaties zou brengen.
Vaak hebben personen die connecties met een bepaald bedrijf hebben, een stageplaats voor je gezocht. Ook naar deze personen toe, heb je een zekere verantwoordelijkheid. Zij blijven in de toekomst zaken doen met deze bedrijven.
Let altijd goed op je bagage als je reist, verlies het niet uit het oog! Vanzelfsprekend drink je geen alcohol en rook je niet. Vergeet je paspoort en je verzekeringspapieren niet!
Maak een kopie van je paspoort en verzekeringspapieren en noteer pasnummers (handig bij verlies). Zorg dat je belangrijke telefoonnummers altijd bij de hand hebt. Verder is het belangrijk dat het paspoort (of ID) nog geldig is!
Pas je aan bij de regels die binnen het stagebedrijf gelden en maak goede afspraken over bijvoorbeeld werktijden en (koffie-)pauzes. Probeer van tevoren aan de weet te komen wat er van je verwacht wordt met betrekking tot de kleding die je draagt. Let op je taalgebruik. De directe manier waarop in Nederland vaak dingen gezegd worden, wordt in het buitenland niet altijd gewaardeerd. Vermijd taal die door buitenlanders als grof wordt ervaren. Breng nooit vertrouwelijke informatie naar buiten van het bedrijf waar je stage loopt. Stel je positief op en bedenk dat zelfverzekerdheid een goede eigenschap is; eigenwijsheid niet!

Hiya Appleby! Location: Appleby in Westmorland Cumbria, England Period: April/May 2013
Just like all my other classmates, I had to do an international internship as well this year. As the aim of this experience was to improve your English, I figured that the best place to do this was England. I took part in the exchange programme with Appleby Grammar School last year and I absolutely loved it, That’s probably the reason why contacting Nellie ( my pen pal ) was one of the first things I did. She confirmed that I could stay with her and the head teacher of Appleby Grammar School took care of the other aspects of the internship. st On the 21 of May, I finally went off to England. For the ones of you who have never heard of Cumbria or Appleby before, I’ll give a short description of what it is like. 1. There are hills everywhere 2. There are far more sheep than people 3. The weather is typically English (rain, rain and more rain) 4. The people that do live there are extremely friendly. That last thing is the most important one of course. For my internship I even taught 5 classes about The Netherlands and Dutch culture. The whole thing was just so relaxed. All the students and members of staff were willing to talk to me or help me out with anything and I really got used to being in that school after a while. I especially had a lot of fun playing games such as twister in the common room with all the other students.
A bit of Holland in Appleby I was in England on queensday, so I missed out on the whole event. But I decided to dress up in orange anyway. Everyone in school was of course really curious about it and they even wanted me to teach them a few words of Dutch. It did not take very long before everyone started shouting things like ‘’Jij bent mooi!’’ to each other. The students were also really enthusiastic about my presentation on Holland and this made me feel proud to be Dutch. I really enjoyed my time in England. It was a very interesting experience regarding language, but it were the people I met who made it memorable. Peggy van der Have – V5
Een nieuw gezicht bij het stagebureau Er is mij gevraagd een stukje te schrijven ter introductie voor het stagebureau. Ik heb nog even overwogen het in het Engels te doen, maar het leek mij toch verstandiger het in het Nederlands te schrijven. Mijn naam is Barbara van Dijk, 46 jaar , getrouwd en moeder van 4 kinderen. Tim de oudste (21) is inmiddels al wat jaartjes van de Willem af, Koen (17) zit in 4 H.A.V.O. , Merel (13) is dit jaar op de Willem begonnen! Dan hebben we ook nog onze jongste Lieke , zij is 8 jaar oud ! Van beroep ben ik verpleegkundige maar op dit moment werkzoekend. Ik ben een aantal maanden geleden benaderd om zitting te nemen in de stagecommissie en dat leek mij gelijk ontzettend leuk en interessant om te doen. Op deze manier blijf ik voeling houden met de school en kom ik in contact met leerlingen die een mooie en leerzame periode in binnen-of buitenland ervaren. Het is erg leuk om de stageverslagen te lezen en te zien hoe zij zo’n stage beleven. Ik hoop in de toekomst nog veel leerlingen te kunnen begeleiden naar een mooie en onvergetelijke stageperiode en wens degene die deze zomer vertrekken alvast heel veel plezier!! Barbara Francke

Studying in and around an office in Technical Delft Location: Delft, The Netherlands Period: April/May 2013 The first time I heard about the internship I thought where I could go. I couldn’t come up with anything and even the months after that, I still hadn’t found an address somewhere abroad. But, since you can do your internship in the Netherlands too, and my teacher, Prof. Simons, works at the TU Delft, this was an opportunity for me to see how everything works at the technical university of Delft. The Monday of the week before the May holiday, I went by bus and by train to the student city of Delft. I went to the faculty of Aerospace Engineering (L&R) , which was a ten minute walk from the station. The woman who received me was very kind to me. She was the management assistant of the whole faculty. Well, that’s what I first thought she was. It was actually the first lesson I learned: every section in every building of the TU Delft tries to operate alone. Even the student administration was separately organised. I got the chance to see the whole faculty in a guided tour by one of the students. The student, who was called Heiko, showed me lots of fascinating things in the faculty. For example the aeroplane on this picture. It isn’t used much, but it is a show piece of the university. The majority of the time I spend in a rather big office, which belonged to a employee who worked only once a week in Delft. There are various things I did when I was there: putting student files online, putting business cards in a computer file and many other things. The lectures I attended dealt with the subject of physics. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend a lecture on aerospace engineering itself, but I personally thought the physics lectures Prof. Simons gave were already difficult enough. The lecture was about the book shown on the left. In the three lectures, the topics Prof. Simons discussed were about physics only. I took some notes, but couldn’t understand it all. In the second week on Wednesday, I went to a Studio Class Room. The setup of this SCR was rather new to me. The students did a test on a computer about the content of the lecture they had had. I did the same test, but it was rather difficult I had some conversations with students too. The students told me that the first year was rather tough and lots of students drop out. Also, the content of the first and second year had almost nothing to do with the name of the study: L&R. In these years, the main subjects were maths and physics. To conclude, my internship was really useful and interesting, and I actually learned a lot about the student’s life in university. I like to thank Prof. Simons, for helping and accompanying me during the internship. Also, I came to the conclusion that I don’t want to study Aerospace Engineering, because the whole concept of aeroplanes didn’t really grab me. Massimo Achterberg – V5
