Inleiding Fl

Samen met o. a.

Introduction Fr

Introduction En
Where the D’Haese family is concerned it is abundantly clear that artistic blood will flow where it finds a path. The D’Haese family is represented in literally all forms of art, be it music, poetry or the visual arts. The exhibition in Monaco focuses primarily on the visual arts.
Neither Hannes nor Begga received formal arts training and Hannes could be described as an “autodidact” since, as he puts it, “I do not know what the inside of an art academy looks like”.
own image-language where color predominates. Notwithstanding this, the influence of the CoBrA art movement (of which his uncle Reinhoud was a major activist) can be clearly seen. In Hannes’ work it is not so much the medium that is important. For Hannes the medium is a vehicle for manipulating the viewer’s perception. He creates his works so that they "testify’. This way he brings both color and his personal conviction to a large public.Hannes works as an artist but thinks as a marketer. Through his work he preaches his personal belief, a belief in a better world, a conviction that art can save the world. His most recent project, an authentic Noah’s Ark with more than 300 fiberglass/polyester animal figures, is a metaphor for this conviction.
Fascinated by the art of her older brothers, Roel and Reinhoud, Begga began her artistic career in 1969. She experimented with a rich variety of materials which she manipulated in diverse ways. In fact her work can be classified into particular time periods depending on what type of material she has used. Her art has a childish quality, a freedom manifested in sensuous forms and eloquent beauty. At the same time there seems to be a search for greater freedom in her work, to find the “universal female freedom”. Her art is unfettered by trends. It is a search for essence, a search for her inner self.
Reinhoud joined the CoBrA movement and together with his brother Roel and fellow artist Maurice Wijckaert, he was one of the leading members of the Taptoe art centre in Brussels. His initial artwork attracted a lot of attention because of its use of strange animal shapes such as spiders, beetles and crabs. At a later stage Reinhoud found his inspiration in the vegetable world, leading to his use of more plastic sculptures. The anthropomorphic creatures that appear in his iconography is linked to his increasing expressionism, which occasionally tended towards aggressive designs.
It is not easy to say whether Hannes D’Haese is an artist or an activist who wants to improve the world. His works are contrary to all currently acknowledged contemporary art forms. He has his
From 1949 Roel occupied a very special place in contemporary sculpture. Stone, wrought iron, tin and bronze, copper, wood, silver and gold all represented a continuing challenge for Roel. Together
It could be said that Hannes D’Haese (47) and his mother Begga D’Haese (78) belong to the "younger’ generation of the family as, unlike Reinhoud and Roel, they are both creatively very active.

with Alechinsky Walasse Ting, Vandercam and his brother Reinhoud, Roel frequently contributed to the activities of the Taptoe art centre, which opened in 1955. In this climate, where the fantastic, the absurd and the informal prevailed, he created bizarre creatures, insects and vegetable forms. From 1960 Roel’s style has tended towards more distinctive figuration. Real objects enter his work. For him each sculpture is a new adventure, a battle with matter, which has to be independently understood and modelled. Roel constructs a baroque world, which testifies to his psychic awareness. Roel’s work bears witness to his highly developed sensitivity, to his dramatic imagination but also to his passionate humane message, which is found in the artwork of all the D’Haeses.

Roel D’Haese was born in Geraardsbergen (Belgium) in 1921. He was a sculptor and graphic designer and is considered to be the most famous of the Flemish surrealistic sculptors. He was the brother of sculptors Reinhoud and Begga D’Haese and was married to the poet Chris Yperman. From 1935 to 1938 he studied at the Academie of Alost, after which he moved to St Genesius Rode where he was a pupil of Oscar Jespers at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs La Cambre in Brussels. In 1954 he received the recently established “Young Belgian Sculptor” award and subsequently the collector Benedict Goldschmidt added Roel’s work to his collection. Roel created strange human and animal creatures in wrought iron. Despite being small, these figurines are always warlike, powerful and threatening and whether screwed together or welded, always created a primitive or barbaric impression. From 1958 Roel enjoyed international renown through his participation in the 29th Biennale of Venice, his solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Art in Brussels and an exhibition at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris together with Cesar and Jean Tinguely. This set the standard for new sculptures. The whimsical and unexpected monster-creations of Roel D’Haese testify to an enhanced abstract surrealism. He creates passionate and unfamiliar formats into new and totally unexpected assembled-images. Roel D’Haese died in Bruges in 1996.

Fl

Reinhoud d’Haese was born in 1928 in Geraardsbergen, Belgium. Brother of sculptors Roel and Begga D’Haese, he was a sculptor, illustrator and graphic artist. Having completed an apprenticeship with a goldsmith in Brussels his artistic education began at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Visuels (ENSAV) in Brussels. In 1950 he was introduced to the Atelier Marais in Brussels. Here he got to know and work with artists from the CoBrA movement, which united artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam and advocated a more aggressive, bolder art form. He became a good friend of the Belgian artist and graphic designer Pierre Alechinsky and in the 1950s he regularly exhibited with Alechinsky, Jorn and Dotremont. In 1957 he received the Young Belgian Sculptor award. Following his marriage to a French girl in 1960 he shortened his artistic name to Reinhoud. His early works were copper-welded metamorphous figures, sometimes resembling insects, sometimes birds, and frequently bearing human features. For this technique he tended to use yellow and red copper, lead, and pewter (copper and tin), as these materials could easily be shaped to his fantastic creatures. His originality was part of the figurative renaissance of the sculptures of the sixties and he played an important role in magic-realism along with his brother Roel D’Haese and Rik Poot. Reinhoud D’Haese died of a stroke on 1st July, 2007 at the age of 79.

begga d'haese 1939
Fl

Begga D’Haese was born in 1939 in Aalst, Belgium. The younger sister of well known sculptors, Reinhoud and Roel D’Haese, she had to work hard to make a name for herself as a sculptor. Yet, since 1969, she has resolutely asserted herself with the quiet strength of a woman who, despite ten pregnancies, has lost none of her desire for self-fulfilment. Believing that iron would be "her’ material, Begga studied welding at the technical secondary school in Veurne (Belgium), in order to create metal sculptures. To celebrate the school’s 25th anniversary, she and the other pupils of the welding class built a monument weighing 2000 pounds and standing 4 metres high that was placed in front of the school building. Very rapidly, however, she found that her real love was the subtle, timeless working of wood and marble. During her first year of production she made The Times newspaper twice, and in 1970 she sold a sculptured chess set to a Swiss art collector at the Kunstmesse in Basel. Begga D’Haese succeeds in taking external sensations under full plastic control. Her work exudes happiness, and she can only create when in a positive mood. Devoid of bitterness or parallel feelings, her art tends to make the world a nicer place. It radiates a tactile quality that strokes our senses and gives us an intense desire to touch the material. Her sculptures invite the viewer to caress.

Fl

Hannes D’Haese is the antithesis of a classically trained painter. Inspired by Karel Appel, the renowned CoBrA artist, D’Haese began painting after encountering the Dutchman’s technique of just throwing paint on a canvas. D’Haese professes that he has never seen the inside of an art academy, emphasizing that becoming an artist is not something one can learn as it comes from within oneself. To him, his visions are all-encompassing, finding accepted techniques and schooling too limiting for their expression. His style is described as abstract expressionism with a penchant towards action painting. Today this forty five year old color artist exudes the drive of his father, a doctor intent on defeating death, of his talented mother Begga D’Haese and of his uncles Reinhoud (CoBrA group) and Roel D’Haese (Belgium’s greatest surrealist sculptor). Is he following in the art-footsteps of Reinhoud d’Haese and Karel Appel (abstract expressionists) or did he redefine love and color into a new form of art? One thing is certain, his art testifies to emotion, passion, melancholy and pleasure. It is an endless theatre of which spectators willingly or unwillingly become part.

Jan ridder Hoet 1936

Jan, Knight Hoet (born 23 June,1936 in Leuven, BelEn gium) is probably the foremost name in contemporary art in Flanders. The founder of SMAK (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, originally the City Museum for Contemporary Art) in Ghent, Belgium[1], Hoet served as its curator and conservator from 1975 until his retirement in 2003. Influential far beyond Flanders, Hoet’s flamboyant and dynamic presentation style resulted in him being called the “Flemish Pope of Art”. Adored by the press, he was responsible for convincing the media to look positively on modern art. He put his name to a number of landmark exhibitions that brought art to the people and vice versa, such as “Chambres d’amis” (1986) and “Over the Edges” (2000), with which he literally opened the doors and windows of modern art to a wider public. In 1992 he was guest curator for the “Documenta IX” exhibition in Kassel, Germany and after leaving SMAK in 2003 he became artistic director of the MARTa museum in Herford (Germany) until 2008.
