Nature The Peelse Golf is located next to a recreation area and agricultural field and in the vicinity of the Natura-2000 national park de Peel. The diverse ecotopes offer various plant- and animalspecies a great biotope and habitat. The following ecotopes are represented on the site: approx. 3 ha of forest area, approx. 4.3 ha of open water, heath land with some shrubs and trees around 0.15 ha and approx.22.55 ha rough. Much of the shore consists of reed and bush vegetation. Management and maintenance focuses on decomposition and native vegetation. A number of relatively rare species are observed of the 22 butterfly species, such as the Thymelicus sylvestris and Siona lineata. 16 of a total of 78 observed birds on and around the golf course are rare or sensitive species, such as the Oriolus oriolus. Common mammals and amphibians are relatively common. Of the damsels and dragonflies (8 species), only the Sympecma fusca is a Red List specie. 4 of the in total 194 wild plant species are Red List species. De Peelse Golf grenst aan een recreatie- en landbouwgebied en ligt in de nabijheid van het Natura-2000 gebied de Peel. De afwisselende ecotopen bieden diverse plant- en diersoorten leefruimte. De volgende ecotopen zijn op het terrein vertegenwoordigd: bosgebied ca. 3 ha, open water ca. 4,3 ha, heideterrein met enkele struiken en bomen ca. 0,15 ha en ca. 22,55 ha. ruigte. Een groot deel van de oevers bestaat uit riet- en ruigtevegetatie. Beheer en onderhoud is gericht op verschraling en gebiedseigen vegetatie. Van de 22 waargenomen vlindersoorten zijn een aantal vrij schaarse soorten als het geelsprietdikkopje en het vals witje. 16 van in totaal 78 op en rond de golfbaan waargenomen vogelsoorten is kwetsbaar of gevoelig, bijv. de wielewaal. Voorkomende zoogdieren en amfibieën zijn vrij algemeen. Van de juffers en libellen (8 soorten) is alleen de bruine winterjuffer een Rode lijstsoort. Van de 194 waargenomen wilde plantensoorten zijn er 4 Rode lijstsoorten. 2

Coöperatie "De Peelse Golf" U.A. GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Landscape & Heritage The location of the golf course has a history of human exploitation and processing. After removal of the peat mainly uncultivated land was formed which was used for grazing. After decades of grazing the soil became so poor that there were several drifting sands. Part of the drifting sands was captured by the plantation of conifers. End of 1960 there was much sand extracted from the site to create a recreation lake. In all these years the location has been used for agricultural and recreation purposes. In the coursedesign by Alan Rijks, old straight parcel lines in the landscape are highlighted by planting of oak avenues. Of importance is the Groote Moolenbeek. This small river runs through the site. This stream is of high ecological value. The shore is part of an originally stream valley which is an interesting location for many plants and animals. An old and partially declined coppice forest is situated next to the parking. De locatie van de golfbaan heeft een geschiedenis van ontginning. Na het afvoeren van het hoogveen ontstonden woeste gronden die hoofdzakelijk voor beweiding werden gebruikt. In die tijd was de grond dermate arm dat er diverse stuifzandgebieden waren. Een deel van de stuifzanden is middels de aanplant van naaldbomen vastgelegd. Eind 1960 is er veel zand gewonnen op de locatie waar nu een recreatieplas is gelegen. Zo is het gebied veel in gebruik geweest voor diverse doeleinden. Interessant is dat er in het door Alan Rijks getekende ontwerp van de golfbaan rekening gehouden is met oude lijnen in het landschap. Deze zijn door de aanplant van eikenlanen geaccentueerd. Belangrijk is verder de Groote Moolenbeek die over het terrein loopt. Het water van deze beek is van goede kwaliteit en daarmee ecologisch waardevol. De oevers maken deel uit van het oorspronkelijk beekdal hetgeen voor veel planten en dieren een uitgelezen locatie is. Grenzend aan de parkeerplaats is een deels vervallen hakhoutbos aanwezig.

Coöperatie "De Peelse Golf" U.A. GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Water Groundwater is used for watering the greens, tees and fairways since 2007. The water comes from a depth of 130 to 170 meters and is of high quality. Impact on the aquifer that serves as the source is minimal (about 1 cm to 25m around the well). The permit is is for a maximum of 60.000m3 per year. The consumption is verified annually and is currently about 30,000m3 for irrigation purposes. Intake of relatively nutrient-rich water from upstream the river Maas is minimized by optimizing the water level in the ponds and restrict the overflow into the Groote Moolenbeek. Voor het beregenen van de greens, tees en fairways wordt sinds 2007 grondwater gebruikt dat op een diepte van 130 tot 170 meter wordt gewonnen. Het water is van goede kwaliteit en de effecten op de 2e watervoerende laag die dient als bron zijn minimaal (ca. -1cm op 25m rond de bron). Er is een toegestane afname van 60.000m3 per jaar. Het verbruik wordt jaarlijks door de overheid geverifieerd en komt momenteel op ca. 30.000m3. Inlaat van relatief voedselrijk gebiedsvreemd water in de vijvers wordt geminimaliseerd door zoveel mogelijk water vast te houden met stuwen en niet op de Groote Moolenbeek af te wateren.

Turf The Peelse Golf is a member course with many active and concerned members. These members have high expactations of the quality of the course. Maintenance is performed by Mourik Golf & Groen. A maintenance program which is quality driven is an important part of the contract. A course management plan is used as a guidance for the Course committee and is increasingly developed. Important is the quality of the game and the speed of the greens. Course maintenance is of high priority. The greens consist largely of bents, fescue grass and poa annua, with stimp measurement of plus eight. De Peelse Golf is een verenigingsbaan met betrokken leden en er wordt een hoge kwaliteit verwacht van de baan. Het onderhoud wordt uitgevoerd door Mourik golf&groen. Een onderhoudsprogramma waarin wordt gestuurd op kwaliteit is een belangrijk onderdeel van het contract. Een baanbeheerplan dat steeds verder wordt uitgewerkt en geconcretiseerd is leidraad voor het beheer en onderhoud. Belangrijk is de kwaliteit van het spel en de snelheid van de greens. The right way of maintenance to prevent unnecessary grass stress. Een juiste manier van onderhoud om stress bij het gras te minimaliseren.
Waste Consumption of (harmful) substances is reduced and minimized. An example of this is the in 2009 build storage bunker for sand and other materials. This bunker will improve quality and decrease the spill of purchased material by erosion. Decided is to outsource the composting of green waste from green clippings. Wood chips are used by a nearby camping resort for paths and similar applications. Sand and other material released from the site is reused for other parts of the course to reshape and add interesting features. The Peelse Golf is committed to minimizing purchases and packaging. Het verbruik van (schadelijke) stoffen wordt beperkt en geminimaliseerd. Als voorbeeld hiervan is er in 2009 een opslag bunker aangelegd voor zand en ander materiaal waardoor de kwaliteit beter blijft en er minder verloren gaat van het aangeschafte materiaal. Energy For the clubhouse, driving range and workshop energy is required. Besides electricity, we use gas (propane), diesel and gasoline. In particular, the power is an issue, partly because the connection to the grid has a limited capacity. Energy saving is maximized by for example low energy light bulbs and motion sensors, but also timers in the parking lot. During an energy audit in the clubhouse the conclusion was that is it important to minimize the quantity of peripherals in the kitchen because it requires relatively much power. When purchasing new appliances or planing modifications to the accommodations the powerconsumption is an isue. Voor het clubhuis, de driving range en de werkplaats is energie noodzakelijk. Coöperatie "De Peelse Golf" U.A. GEO CertifiedTM Report 2010 Verifier Report “De Peelse” Golf is a course located in the north of Limburg, nearby the golf course lies an national park. This park “De Peel” is of great national importance, and is pointed as an area with international valuable habitats (natura2000). The golfcourse, open since 1995, is part of The Schatberg, a recreational area. “De Peelse” Golf is an interesting golf course with a great number of dedicated members. There are a lot of different habitats, these created by the various types of landuse in this area. A good indicator is the amount of bird species that profit of this diversity. One of the remarkable things is the very passionate commitment to sustainability issues by a small group of committee members. Worth mentioning is the decision to abolish the Committed to Green committee after the certification has completed. De Peelse Golf is gelegen in het noorden van Limburg, nabij het beroemde natuurgebied de Peel. De in 1995 in gebruik genomen golfbaan maakt onderdeel uit van het recreatiegebied de Schatberg. De Peelse Golf is een interessante golfbaan met veel betrokken leden. De diverse vormen van landgebruik in de omgeving bieden een afwisselend leefgebied. Het vogelbestand is hier een mooie indicatie van. Noemenswaardig is de werkwijze t.a.v. het GEO-traject. Vanuit een Committed to Green commissie is gestart met het project en is ook de aanvraag gedaan voor certificering. Bedoeling is echter om vanaf certificering de betreffende commissie op te heffen en de verantwoordelijkheden binnen de baancommissie onder te brengen.
Observations Nature
A variety of ecotopes, old and young woodlands, dry and more wet parts, offer a diversity interesting flora and fauna species. In particular, many species of birds benefit from this type of terrain. In 15 years the golf course developed into an area where several vulnerable species can exist. With 195 species of plants, the situation seems good and diverse. The greenkeeping and the Commited to Green committee are trying to enhance this situation by monitoring and searching for good methods in management. More attention to marshes and wet meadows would further increase the biodiversity. A growing interest in nature through the involvement of enthusiastic club members combined with the natural association the IVN is a good development.

Most of the original peat area’s disappeared by exploitation for agricultural use. Current landscape has a distinctive character that can be described as Veenkoloniaal. The golfcourse architect Alan Rijks has taken the typical line elements into account during the design and construction of the course. For example: the entrance lane of the club is planted with oak, and on the course there is also a typical line planting of oaks. Of interest is the Groote Moolenbeek, which runs through the site. This small river has been canalized in the past. And has been recently restored on different places, but not on the golfcourse yet. This restoration would mean a lot to the landscape and the way the landscape is experienced. Water
Until 2007 the course was irrigated by surface water, supplemented with groundwater. Because of a bad water quality for irrigation (too much iron) a new source was made. The impact on the groundwater level is expected to be minimal. By government restrictions there is a limit on the amount of water being used which is not exceeded. Surface water quality is monitored to control the situation. The water quality can be of ecological interest, therefore it is necessary to reduce the amount of water from ponds outside the golf course where the amount of nutrition levels are high. Turf
The maintenance is performed by an contractor “Mourik” and governed by an quality contract. The superintendent is familiar with the golf course and is well aware of the local situation. For the club, a high quality game is important. A management plan is made to get a better grip on management. This plan will lead to better communication and quality. Waste
The waste is collected partially separated. Outsourcing of the maintenance and catering makes it more difficult to implement far-reaching measures. Of course it is assumed that both parties meet the statutory requirements. Through proper consultation it is possible to reach a high level of waste separation and prevention. Nice example is the removal of wood chips for use on the trails of the neighbour recreation area. There is a chance to trade in good cooperation with the operator and the contractor's work to further sustainability in the areas of procurement and waste. Energy
Due to the limited capacity of the electricity connection “De Peelse” is forced to monitor the energy consumption very well. An energy audit conducted which ensured that the amount of peripherals in the kitchen is reduced. By appointing a person for environmental management and make him part of the course committee it must be possible to reach a higher level of lowenergy consumption. 26

An enthusiastic core group have been working on the application reports for certification. By working with external groups such as the IVN, organize collective activities and also publishing in the club magazine about nature and environment they try to raise more awareness. Indicated is that it is difficult to motivate a large group of members for these specific issues. Management planning
As indicated, there is an enthusiastic core group which achieved the application for certification. Important and fascinating is the fact that this group came to the conclusion that a standalone environmental group would not be the solution for future problems and activities. Therefore it was decided to eliminate the Committed to Green Committee and to combine functionalities with the course committee. From that moment an environmental coordinator will be responsible for achieving certain goals and is able to keep an eye on legislation and other environmental issues. Off course the same kind of responsibility for nature and landscape needs to be taken.
