This decontextualizing of historical fragments is a recurring interest of mine. I like the idea that you can make a thing mean something new, without completely erasing its original signification, so that you get an effect which is layered, almost ghostly. Mai-Thu Perret As one of the young generation of artists weaving new stories around the visions and shapes of twentieth-century avant-garde movements, Swiss-born Mai-Thu Perret (1976, Geneva) is an exceptional talent. While melancholy and satire are rarely absent from it, Perret’s work in particular also conveys a kind of down-to-earth optimism. Her texts are a mixture of historical fact and fiction. In her sculptures and objects, she parodies the history of lofty ideals employing a matter-of-fact ‘I can do that too’ aesthetic. Conceptual thinking and the strategy of claiming existing images go hand in hand with craftsmanship and a belief in the magic effect of sculpture. fictitious story Mai-Thu Perret has been writing a fictitious story entitled The Crystal Frontier since 1999. Employing part imagined and part annotated diary fragments, letters and texts from handbills, she sketches a kaleidoscopic image of a group of women who have retreated, disillusioned, from the city and from Western, i.e. capitalist, society. They pick up their lives again in the desert of New Mexico but on a different footing with
Hieronder volgen enkele fragmenten daaruit.
work, nature and themselves. Perret describes the objects and sculptures she makes in addition to writing her story as ‘hypothetical products’ of this women’s commune. The objects are without exception elegant and sometimes haunting improvisations on mostly classic modernist themes in which the boundaries between practical, decorative and autonomous objects are systematically crossed. Perret based ‘The Family’, a group of papiermâché figures representing a woman with children (2007), on a picture from a 1935 Hollywood musical (A Midsummer’s Night Dream). Her ceramic wall reliefs are reminiscent of the fifties and Lucio Fontana, while her handmade flags and motives made of neon lights are copied from Georgian latticework or from a painting by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944).
Land of Crystal The exhibition Land of Crystal is built up following the ground plan of the museum. An outdoor minimalist spiral covered with cotton fabric printed with Perret’s own designs is on display in the great hall. In the four smaller ‘domestic’ rooms, she arranges the group of figures, flags, neon lights, wall reliefs and texts in a traditional museum fashion according to type and materials. Perret explores how her objects and the Crystal Frontier story, which usually serves as a fictional setting for her work, relate to this ‘old-fashioned museum presentation’. As a contribution to the catalogue Mai-Thu Perret - Land of Crystal that will be published in October 2007, Mai-Thu Perret answered ten questions. The following is an extract of this interview.

interview with Mai-Thu Perret I’ve always been fascinates by stories of revolutions, alternate orders that invert everything we know about the world. I studied literature and have always been a reader, so the fictional mode was what came easiest to me. Historically there are sources, of course, such as Charlotte Gilmore Perkins’ Herland or Margaret Duchess of Newcastle ‘s The Blazing World. Both are early feminist tales (Perkins wrote at the beginning of the XXth century and the Duchess of Newcastle in the 17th century) where the author imagines a world lead by women, benevolent utopias where everything is peaceful and justly ruled, a clean inversion from the violent patriarchal worlds their authors lived in. In “real life” the American West has always been a refuge for misfits and idealists, an endless number of people went there to “start again”, from real organized communities like Llano del Rio, founded by a communist candidate to the US presidency in the Mojave desert in 1917, to originals and artists like Agnes Martin (19122004) who lived and painted in the solitude of the New Mexico desert. In a way all these figures (and there are so many more) are inspirations. [..] I guess at the beginning I came up with the commune because I wanted a way to make art and I wasn’t satisfied with picking up a brush and simply making a painting for the hell of it. I would always come up against the arbitrariness of my decisions and feel frustrated. In order to do away with the arbitrary, most artists invent a sense of mission or purpose which felt really fake and artificial to me. I didn’t think I had anything more special to say than other people, and I hated the way that in order to be an artist, you somehow had to build up your ego and your personal story. The narrative first came up as a way to deal with these issues.

Once you have set up a narrative, you also set up a process and a set of rules and the art makes itself, it escapes you. At that time I was fascinated by conceptual art and Sol Lewitt’s phrase “the idea is the machine that makes the art.” The fiction was a way of creating a machine to make the art. [..] After A.R. is an appropriated version of a series of letters Alexander Rodchenko wrote to his wife Varvara Stepanova when he was in Paris building the Soviet Pavillion for the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He had never been to Paris or to the West before, and his reaction hovers between amazement and disgust at this first real life encounter with capitalism. [..] In many way this text seemed like an archetype to me, it said so strikingly the kind of things I imagined a character from the Crystal Frontier would say if she visited New York or London after a long spell in the desert, and so instead of writing something “in the style” of Rodchenko’s letter, I decided to appropriate it and to use it as my own. The only thing I did was remove any precise markers of time and place, as well as markers of the author’s gender, so that it could read as being in the voice of a woman. In the context of the show, with the dancing mannequins of the Apocalypse Ballet, the text functioned as a sort of caption. A lot of things in text could be seen as mirrored in the works of the show, such as the discussion of dance and objectified female bodies, or the reference to neon signs.
It’s as silly to fetishize the handmade as the mechanically produced. Many times things looked handmade because I made them myself and I was learning how to do them as I make them. So for example the first mannequins were made out of paper mâché, as much for convenience’s sake as for esthetic reasons, and I didn’t think so much about their shapes as sculpture, it’s just something that very conveniently happened. [..] What mattered to me there was the feeling of an individuality behind the work, but that is an effect and it doesn’t actually need to be mine. The works I most often make myself are the fabric banners, which in truth can be sewed by any seamstress, but I like the sound of the motor and watching the needle come in and out. I think in the end the idea should run the work, and if you plan the execution out well, like a score or a process, you are bound to run into something interesting. So it’s true I like accidents, and accidents are not generally associated to machines and industry, although in truth machines stutter too.
