Metafora kultur Culture is a backpack. It is hard to carry but it provides necessary things. Culture is a butterfly. It is a fragile thing of great beauty. Culture is a pair of handcuffs. ‘Culture ... is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.’ (Tyler (British anthropologist) 1870: 1; cited by Avruch 1998: 6) ‘Culture consists of patterns, explicit and implicit, of and for behaviour acquired and transmitted by symbols, constituting the distinctive achievements of human groups, including their embodiment in artifacts; the essential core of culture consists of traditional (i.e. historically derived and selected) ideas and especially their attached values; culture systems may, on the one hand, be considered as products of action, on the other, as conditional elements of future action.’ (Kroeber & Kluckhohn 1952: 181; cited by Adler 1997: 14) ‘Culture consists of the derivatives of experience, more or less organized, learned or created by the individuals of a population, including those images or encodements and their interpretations (meanings) transmitted from past generations, from contemporaries, or formed by individuals themselves.’ (T.Schwartz 1992; cited by Avruch 1998: 17) ‘[Culture] is the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one group or category of people from another.’ (Hofstede 1994: 5) ‘... the set of attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors shared by a group of people, but different for each individual, communicated from one generation to the next.’ (Matsumoto 1996: 16) ‘Culture is a fuzzy set of basic assumptions and values, orientations to life, beliefs, policies, procedures and behavioural conventions that are shared by a group of people, and that influence (but do not determine) each member’s behaviour and his/her interpretations of the ‘meaning’ of other people’s behaviour.’ (Spencer-Oatey 2008: 3)
Karakteristik kultur • Culture is manifested at different layers of depth • Culture affects behaviour and interpretations of behaviour • Culture can be differentiated from both universal human nature and unique individual personality • Culture influences biological processes • Culture is associated with social groups • Culture is both an individual construct and a social construct • Culture is always both socially and psychologically distributed in a group, and so the delineation of a culture’s features will always be fuzzy • Culture has both universal (etic) and distinctive (emic) elements • Culture is learned • Culture is subject to gradual change • The various parts of a culture are all, to some degree, interrelated • Culture is a descriptive not an evaluative concept
Teori deterministik kultur • The position that the ideas, meanings, beliefs and values people learn as members of society determines human nature. People are what they learn. • There is no universal "right way" of being human. "Right way" is almost always "our way"; that "our way" in one society almost never corresponds to "our way" in any other society. Proper attitude of an informed human being could only be that of tolerance. • The optimistic version of this theory postulates that human nature being infinitely malleable, human being can choose the ways of life they prefer. • The pessimistic version maintains that people are what they are conditioned to be; this is something over which they have no control. Human beings are passive creatures and do whatever their culture tells them to do. This explanation leads to behaviorism that locates the causes of human behavior in a realm that is totally beyond human control.
Relativisme kultur • Different cultural groups think, feel, and act differently. There is no scientific standards for considering one group as intrinsically superior or inferior to another. • It does not imply normalcy for oneself, nor for one's society. It, however, calls for judgment when dealing with groups or societies different from one's own. • Information about the nature of cultural differences between societies, their roots, and their consequences should precede judgment and action. • Negotiation is more likely to succeed when the parties concerned understand the reasons for the differences in viewpoints.
Etnosentrisme kultur • Ethnocentrism is the belief that one's own culture is superior to that of other cultures. It is a form of reductionism that reduces the "other way" of life to a distorted version of one's own. • This is particularly important in case of global dealings when a company or an individual is imbued with the idea that methods, materials, or ideas that worked in the home country will also work abroad. Environmental differences are, therefore, ignored. • Ethnocentrism, in relation to global dealings, can be categorized as follows: – Important factors in business are overlooked because of the obsession with certain cause-effect relationships in one's own country. – Even though one may recognize the environmental differences and problems associated with change, but may focus only on achieving objectives related to the home-country. The objectives set for global operations should also be global. – The differences are recognized, but it is assumed that associated changes are so basic that they can be achieved effortlessly.

High Context
Low Context
• Less verbally explicit communication, less written/ formal information • More internalized understandings of what is communicated • Multiple cross-cutting ties and intersections with others • Long term relationships • Strong boundaries- who is accepted as belonging vs who is considered an "outsider” • Knowledge is situational, relational. • Decisions and activities focus around personal face-to-face relationships, often around a central person who has authority.
• Rule oriented, people play by external rules • More knowledge is codified, public, external, and accessible. • Sequencing, separation--of time, of space, of activities, of relationships • More interpersonal connections of shorter duration • Knowledge is more often transferable • Task-centered. Decisions and activities focus around what needs to be done, division of responsibilities.
