C.d. The Solo Shows worden gesteund door Pirelli.

F.a. KENDELL GEERS “Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair”
(Macbeth, eerste bedrijf, eerste toneel) Kendell Geers Kendell Geers is geboren in Zuid-Afrika in mei 1968. Hij wordt vertegenwoordigd door Galerie Rodolphe Janssen, Brussel. F.b.

The Pet Shop Boys, The Young Punx and Dead Man Ray. F.d. MAARTEN VANDEN EYNDE ‘Brick Era’ +/- 2013 A.D. 'Brick Era', +/- 2013 A.D.

FILM & VIDEO G.b.i.

Bijlage 2: The Stage programma Curated by Katerina Gregos, artistic director, Art Brussels
Wednesday 17th April Professional preview 12 noon – 16.00 followed by official opening 16.00 – 22.00 19.00 Performance “In the Making” by Colden Drystone Looped sounds and visual projections tell a condensed history of the creative process. The Artists impulses and inspirations are set against the creative forces alive in the universe. There are three movements and a painting created live. 1. Outside God Sounds coming from “outside God” suggest an embryonic space. They grow in depth and volume, teetering on the edge of language. Pigment is applied to the blank painting. Rhythm appears, gradually forming a pulse that becomes the backbone for layers of percussion. Consciousness is born. 2. What should we talk about? Language solos as consciousness is coupled with self-awareness and the content becomes referential and analytical. Quotes from artists and writers merge with live radio and sounds from the Internet. Ideas collide in an autobiographical account of artistic human behavior. Words are written over the pigment painting. 3. Future Primitive Thunderclaps of sound, created by layering every single note an instrument on top of one another signal the end of progress. Without rhythm or context sounds bounce through space and time forever. The words are crossed out with lines of gold, completing the painting. Duration: approx. 60 mins. Courtesy: Hannah Barry Gallery, London and Lee Roach. Colden Drystone aka Tom Barnett is an artist working with different media. Thursday 18th April (Nocturne, open until 22.00) FOCUS BRUSSELS: Europe’s Most Upcoming City? Part I: 12.30 – 13.30 What is It That Makes Today’s Belgium so Different So Appealing? “Don't believe the hype!” warned Public Enemy in 1988, but the power of “hype” is stronger than ever in today’s hyperlinked reality. What is the truth behind the rumours that Brussels is the “new Berlin”? What does that mean for the Belgian art world and for the flux of newcomers flooding into the country? Is it merely a case of affordable housing and studio space, or is there something fundamentally fertile about Belgian cultural soil? Exhibitions such as "Being, in Brussels" (Argos, 2006) and "Expats & Clandestines" (Wiels, 2007) and explored the rich and charged mixture of artists living and working in Brussels, and the impact that the city had on their practice. What is the situation now, six years later, when Belgium is just one centre of a reconfigured Europe, yet is increasingly present on the international scene? How does the context in which we operate affect what we do, when artists are said to be post-studio and curators are portrayed as hyperconnected, rootless yet flexible workers of the creative sector? Bringing together a collection of foreign Belgians – either newly arrived or with deep roots in the country’s art scene – this panel explores the factors behind the country’s longstanding and recently reinvigorated appeal. Speakers: Nav Haq, Curator at MuHKA – Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp; Zin Taylor, artist, Brussels; Gabriel Kuri, artist, Brussels/Mexico City Moderated by Zoe Gray, independent curator, Brussels Part II 13.30 – 14.30 Brussels: Marriage of Convenience or Love Match? For some years now, many foreign artists have been moving to Brussels. This phenomenon has been accompanied by the arrival of quite a few international galleries, which have also been attracted by the advantages the city offers – including rents that are quite low – as well as by the fact that Belgium is known to have the greatest number of collectors per square metre. And that reputation has continued to grow, as numerous foreign collectors, attracted by Belgium's fiscal facilities, have also come to live in Brussels, making the city an important nerve centre. At least that is what is widely stated – but is it true? Is the city's attractiveness solely due to economic causes? For, more than in any other city, the private sector has been crucial in relation to contemporary art and over recent years it has been projects emerging from the private sector that have made up for the failings of the public sector. So has the marriage of convenience developed, in some cases, into a love match that finds its expression in the mushrooming of private exhibition spaces and galleries? It seems clear that it has – as most of those key players, having moved to Brussels, have discovered the wide range of possibilities offered by a city that is at once vibrant and unassuming, multicultural and provincial…to the extent that it has now supplanted Antwerp in the affections of lovers of contemporary art. Speakers: Dimitri Jeurissen , CEO, BaseDesign, Brussels/Barcelona/New York/Santiago de Chile; Petra Kuipers, director, Motive Gallery, Brussels; AnneClaire Schmitz, director, La Loge, Brussels Moderated by Virginie Devillez, curator, Archives of Contemporary Art, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels Immediately followed by the launch of the Brussels Art Guide at 15.00 in the presence of of the authors Sam Steverlynck, journalist & art critic, Valerie

15.00 – 16.30 pm The Pleasures and Challenges of Collecting and Presenting Video Video art - or, more appropriately, art in the moving image - is no longer considered a peripheral, experimental art. It occupies a central position in most museums, kunsthalles and biennials; and yet private collectors and the market have been slow to embrace it because of the technology and special spatial considerations it requires, maybe also because of its immaterial nature. Video also occupies an awkward and scant position at art fairs because selling video is not easy, and also because of questions of time investment and spatial constraints. But things are changing: the technology behind video is becoming smaller, cheaper and more practical and slowly, more collections are acquiring works of film and video, though video still lags behind most other art forms in terms of sales. Yet due to its immersive and often acoustic nature, proximity to cinema and television, video and film offers those viewing it perhaps the most gratifying experience of all art forms. And some of the most interesting work being made today is being made in the moving image. What are the pleasures, challenges and advantages of collecting video or film, and of presenting it? What should one bear in mind before buying a work in film or video? Is video better suited for institutions and museums rather than private collections? How to deal with the obsolescence of technology and questions of preservation, exhibition and display? And what about video and the market? How does one navigate the discrepancy between the editioned, commercialized side of an easily reproducible medium and the more accessible, democratic distribution of video through festivals, for example. This panel aims to demystify the complex questions behind the realities of collecting video and to highlight the fact that acquiring and displaying video need not always be a daunting task. Speakers: David Claerbout, artist, Antwerp; Ilga Minjon, co-curator, Impakt, Utrecht; Hans Op de Beeck, artist, Brussels; Isabelle & Jean-Conrad Lemaître, collectors, Paris Moderated by Rolf Quaghebeur, director Argos – Centre for Art & Media, Brussels Immediately followed by the press conference of Contour 2013, the 6th Biennial of Moving Image entitled “Leisure, Discipline and Punishment”, and the announcement of the participating artists by Contour curator Jacob Fabricius, director Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen The panel is co-organised by Contour Mechelen vzw and Art Brussels

20.00 Performance “Ye Shanghai” by Roberto Paci Dalò. “Ye Shanghai” is a project originally conceived in 2012 as a performance based on film and audio materials from the years between 1920 and 1949. Composer and visual artist Roberto Paci Dalò has chosen to bring back to life the history of the Shanghainese Ghetto, where thousands of Jews were finding shelter after fleeing from prosecutions, through an iconic Chinese song of the 40s, “Ye Shanghai”. Decomposing and stretching this song, still deeply rooted in the collective memory of Shanghai's dwellers, Paci Dalò manages to reach that magical aura that only mnemonic distortion and nostalgia have. The notes of “Ye Shanghai” swing between the unrecognisable and the familiar, opening to the listener not just an overview on historical happenings, but also conferring a privileged entrance into the world of memories that the very protagonists of those vicissitudes might have experienced and remember. “Ye Shanghai was premiered as a performance on the opening of SH Contemporary. The Ye Shanghai Project is a co-production Arthub Asia, SH Contemporary, Giardini Pensili, Messagerie, NOTCH Festival. In association with BFI British Film Institute. In collaboration with iTOPIA Management Consulting Co. Ltd and Fudan University of Shanghai. “Ye Shangai” will be presented for the first time in Europe at Art Brussels. Friday 19th April 14.00 – 15.30 The Extra Mile: Engaged Collecting. From the private museum and beyond In recent years, private collections are gaining more prominence and visibility in the contemporary art landscape. Given the expansion of the art world, the proliferation of commercial galleries, art fairs, biennials, and the emergence of collectors from newly wealthy geographies, private collecting has become more widespread and visible than before. Whether stemming from genuine interest and/or reasons of social status, recent years have seen the rise of the private collector and the private museum. But beyond the accumulation and public display of art objects what can the practice of collecting be? How do collectors go the extra mile in their support of art and artists? What are new forms of enlightened art patronage that move beyond the showcase private museum or collection? And how do collectors see their relationship with artists? Do they feel they have a responsibility towards them and if so, in what does this consist of? At a time when it seems that the notion of the private museum has become somewhat of a commonplace in what we call the ‘art world’, how can we envisage forms of collecting that go one step further in terms of both public responsibility and support of artistic production.

Speakers: Dimitris Daskalopoulos, collector, founder Demergon Foundation, Athens; Maurizio Morra Greco, collector, founder Fondazione Morra Greco, Naples; Sandra Hegedus Mulliez, founder, SAM Art Projects, Paris; Guy Ullens, collector and founder of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing Moderated by Chris Dercon, director, Tate Modern, London 16.00 – 17.30 Art Fairs: Are they Really so Bad After All? In recent years, Art Fairs have become a significant component of the contemporary art world. As it has expanded so have art fairs; and, despite the economic crisis, they continue to proliferate, now numbering at over 200. Though the art fair model does not perhaps provide the best spatial conditions for viewing art, it nevertheless provides many opportunities to see a wide variety of art in a concentrated context. Art fairs have also become an essential part of the livelihoods of many galleries and artists. Yet they also receive frequent criticism. For some, art fairs are a ‘necessary evil’, for others a superficial lifestyle phenomenon where commerce trumps art, and for others a place where the quality of art is undermined by the pressure to produce ‘art fair art’. But are art fairs really so bad after all? Surely they must contribute something, otherwise they would not be such a success. This panel aims to discuss the pros and cons of the art fair phenomenon. What are they good for? What are they bad for? How have they affected art, the market, art production, and the way we look at art? Art fairs are also easy and predictable targets of criticism as far as the art market is concerned. While some of these criticisms are well founded, less common is a frank and unbiased discussion about what art fairs might actually positively contribute. As with everything, there are two sides to the coin. The panel thus will also highlight the double standards and hypocrisy with which the art market and art fairs are often discussed. While so many people seem readily able to exercise criticism about the evils of the art fair and the art market, these very same people also unwittingly participate in it. The panel thus aims to generate an honest discussion about the opportunities art fairs provide for galleries, artists and collectors and what their contribution has been to the contemporary artistic landscape, beyond the standard critique they face. Speakers: Ute Meta Bauer, Dean of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art, London; Sarah Cosulich Canarutto, Artistic Director, Artissima; Hans Ulrich Obrist, Codirector, Serpentine Gallery, London; Dirk Snauwaert, Director, Wiels Centre for Contemporary Art, Brussels. Moderated by: Sabrina van der Ley, Director for Contemporary Art, National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo 18.00 Performance Gancio Cielo alla ricerca del terzo occhio di tartaruga by Francesco Cavaliere The sound-based performance by Italian artist Francesco Cavaliere, “Gancio Cielo alla ricerca del terzo occhio di tartaruga” (‘Gancio Cielo in the search of the turtle’s third eye’) is a piece of fantastic literature combined with exotic electronic music. Saturday 20th April 12.30 – 17.00 The Value of our Love. Artistic Practice and its Economic Reality. Round table debate and artistic presentations that reflect on value creation in times of a changing economy. Throughout history artists have taken on the role of seismographs and critical observers of the (cultural) crisis, but also as the creators of models of survival and escape. Ever since the beginning of modern art, experimental artistic practices and innovative strategies developed - all shaping the institutional critique of their own time. However, the ‘space of negotiable resistance’ as one could describe the working space in which artists maneuver, has become increasingly conflictive — not least because of the economic powers that underlie its current structure. The powerful (commercial) art market thrives on a model of growth and profit, which puts pressure on the sustainable relationships between the artists, dealers, curators and other actors in the field. By capitalizing on (emerging) artistic expression, the current system corners artistic autonomy instead of stimulating it. And by extension, cultural critique, one of the cornerstones of a democratic society, is threatened to become a commodity and pawn within this system. The assumed mutuality between the artist and the dealer, based on a shared love of cultural production, masks a set of questions about the value of art: how is it created and how is it shared? If artistic practice is caught in a Catch 22 with the market on which it operates, can we think of strategies or countermoves within the system? Where do conflicts emerge when trying to put this into practice? Should this relation come to an end or are there ways to build new forms of alliances between all parties involved? The Value of Our Love opens the floor to a wide selection of artists and other experts in the field that will speak and think about the impact of the current economic system on the modes of artistic production. Together, we will debate possible trajectories for change towards a new economy, also for the arts.

Sunday 21 April 14.00 Tilting the Collector Three talks by Peter Meanwell, producer, BBC3, London Sissel Tolaas, artist, Berlin The Baltic Notebooks of Anthony Blunt via Olof Olsson, artist, Copenhagen Moderated by Chris Fitzpatrick, director, Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp Hang it, buy it, box it, ship it, hang it—even in the context of an art fair, it’s not that simple. On one hand, there’s the law of diminishing returns, which can leave the other hand feeling empty-handed. For a certain breed of collector, it’s like Susan Stewart says: a collection can only ever be incomplete, and is always defined by what it lacks. To be sure, market value never equals cultural value, but collecting is not just a sport. It can be an argument. Wealthy philistines matching serigraphs to their sofas, vampiric speculators, selfless benevolent archivists—such cheap reductions and romantic exaggerations trip over the VIP cheese tray and overlook what intriguingly strange terrain lines the world of the collector. Through three individual talks, BBC Radio producer Peter Meanwell, olfactory historian and artist Sissel Tolaas, and experimental publication The Baltic Notebooks of Anthony Blunt (via artist Olof Olsson) will speak about their respective practices and processes. Their presentations will push our idea of ‘collecting’ into significantly more expansive corporalities than collecting is usually associated with and, from this expanded field, we’ll arrive at a far more complex sense of materiality (especially in relation to those things we often consider ‘dematerialized’ or ‘ephemeral’). Artist, researcher, and olfactory archivist Sissel Tolaas will speak about her work with scent—a sense often marginalized by our culture’s preoccupation with sight
33
(see: Visual Arts). Since 1990, Tolaas has built a library of approximately 7,000 scent specimens, and has even created an entirely new lexicon with which to describe them. Peter Meanwell will offer his experiences with recording songs and sounds from disparate and remote locations as a sound archivist and BBC radio producer. He will play a selection of recordings and speak about the importance of preserving these materials for posterity. Finally, artist Olof Olsson will provide a conduit through which Virginija Januskeviciute and Valentinas Klimasauskas will communicate, as editors of the Baltic Notebooks of Anthony Blunt—a slowly formulating magazine released in pages, not issues, towards an inter-subjective, speculative, and posthumous continuation of the observational work of British art historian and Soviet spy, Sir Anthony Blunt. Presented by Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp 16.00 Performance “Dating Games” by Kendell Geers Kendell Geers Curriculum Vitae begins on the 6 April 1652, the date when the Dutchman Jan van Riebeek declared the Cape of Good Hope to be a Dutch Colony. Bijlage 3. THE CINEMA THE CINEMA is a specially designed structure (designed by Tom Mares in collaboration with artist Walt Van Beek) with comfortable cinema seating where one can view shorter duration videos and films, on two screens, in an appropriate setting. The films were selected from gallery submissions by Katerina Gregos, artistic director of Art Brussels and have been grouped into two screening programmes that run in a continuous loop. PROGRAMME 1 The films selected for this programme focus on issues related to the current social and political landscape and allude to topical concerns in current affairs and the public debate such as the postcolonial condition, the problem of historiography, and the politics of representation; the issue of national identity and collective memory; the concept of community, marginalized groups, and public space; transformations in military practices and neo-imperial power; and questions of labour, crisis, and social disenfranchisement. Many of the films also evoke the contemporary condition of alienation, dislocation, the effects of the impact of globalization, and allude to societies in flux and a world that is fastly changing around us, often with dramatic consequences on human beings. Deploying and sometimes conflating various filmic genres from the documentary, docu-drama and cinema vérité to the mockumentary and fictional narrative film, the programme addresses contemporary social, political and ethical concerns in a tone that is largely poetic, meditative and suggestive, being latently critical, but not confrontational or didactic. Running time: 1 hour 17 mins. George Barber (GY, 1958) The Freestone Drone, 2013 Colour and black & white, sound, 12 min. 56 sec. Courtesy waterside contemporary, London Unmanned Aerial Vehicles – drones – have become an everyday feature of contemporary military activity, replacing humans in reconnaissance flights, smallscale combat missions and covert operations. The US Army operates some ten thousands UAVs – a six-fold increase during Obama’s term - deploying them over locations like Pakistan and Yemen. George Barber’s The Freestone Drone follows a mission from the point of view of the machine. The drone’s camera surveys cityscapes, encounters individuals, reports, and in flight becomes aware of its own utility and destiny. Drone operators routinely study the washing to learn about their targets - it is foretold that the Freestone Drone is to die entangled in a clothes line. Barber brings together war, love, life, death, and sends the drone over not only Waziristan, but also to New York and a London suburb. The drone then travels through time, projecting images of the past and possible futures. In the legacy of Godard and Marker, The Freestone Drone proposes the meeting place of poetry and philosophy as a site to consider contemporary ethical and political concerns. George Barber was born in Guyana in 1958. He lives and works in London, UK. Bill Balaskas (GR, 1983)

Parthenon Rising (II), 2011 Colour, sound, 2 min. 45 sec. Courtesy of the artist and Kalfayan Galleries, Athens/Thessaloniki The original footage, edited in the video 'Parthenon Rising (II)', was filmed on the only night of the year that the Acropolis is open to the public. Thousands of Greeks and tourists climb the ancient hill on this occasion in order to capture images with their cameras. As all lights are off, all monuments, including the Parthenon, can be clearly seen only when the flashlights of the cameras momentarily illuminate them. It is a spectacle that reveals not only an unfamiliar aspect of the monument, but, also, the particular point of view of the diverse crowds from around the world that try to capture the ancient temple’s image and, perhaps along with it, part of its myth. Yet, under the current socioeconomic circumstances, can this myth remain the product of a deep symbol? Can the Parthenon be something more than a “surface” waiting to be photographed and “sold”? Can it avoid the danger of becoming the architectural equivalent of a Hollywood star standing on the red carpet? The contradictory nature of the video’s images, which are at once beautiful and violent, seems to epitomize the contradictions defining the current status of our globalized world. Bill Balaskas was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1983. He lives and works in London, UK. Bertille Bak (FR, 1983) Transport à dos d’hommes (Borne on Men’s Backs), 2012 Video, colour, sound, 15 min. 27 sec. Courtesy the artist and Nettie Horn, London Produced by Paris-Musées Bertille Bak is a storyteller and her films address the notion of community and identity through which she tells stories about the communities she seeks out. Sensitive to the situation of these communities, she appropriates with affection and humour these ethical systems and popular traditions. Merging the aesthetic of an ethnographical documentary with fictional elements, her narratives find their inspiration in the memories of families and communities united by adversity: on the verge of a departure, for example, or condemned to exile or migration. The film “Transport a dos d’hommes” was shot in a Roma camp in the Paris region. As she always does for projects of this type, the artist began by sharing the community's life for several months. Her project focuses on movements, territories and types of music; music plays a dominant part in this project as Bak researched the subway lines of various European capitals for their sound ambiances and the repertoires of Roma musicians. This project does not directly confront the political and social issues involved, although these are implicit throughout the narrative. The real issue here is finding ways of overcoming the constant hostility the community has to cope with. Bertille Bak was born in Arras, France in 1983. She lives and works in Paris, France. walking through a landscape of contrasts in transformation. Where human existence seems seldom, other players like petrified wood, doves, fake palm trees, stray dogs, abandoned glass buildings, a flashlight and the landscape itself evolve as alternative protagonists. Magdy creates a narrative without a beginning or end to highlight the statement’s futility and the emptiness of the search. When asked to explain his philosophical stunt, Diogenes simply replied that he was “looking for an honest man”. Basim Magdy was born in Assiut, Egypt, in 1977. He lives and works in Basel, Switzerland and Cairo, Egypt. An Arabian bakery in Kreuzberg, Berlin. On the wall of the bakery an abstract painting everyday witnesses silently the process of baking bread and the workers preparing the bread dough. The abstract painting is covered on some parts with smoke from the ovens, it remained there probably from one of the previous owners or tenants of the place. This situation of the modern painting in the working place together with footage filmed while attempting to transform a globe into a pyramid is put in relation to the poem "I shall celebrate" by the Zimbabwean poet Chirikure Chirikure. A certain dialogue arises between Chirikure Chirikure’s poem and the workers baking the bread for the world. Mona Vatamanu was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1968. She lives and works in Bucharest. The orchestra originates from the late 1950s when Ghana, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, had become independent from the United Kingdom. Nkrumah’s government introduced new cultural structures and institutions (the orchestra being one of the first ones) in order to establish and enforce national consciousness and make the shift from colonial rule to an independent country. Being part of the political and cultural legacy of its founder Kwame Nkrumah, the orchestra cannot be abolished without provoking political turmoil, but at the same time it is too insignificant in contemporary Ghanaian society to be supported financially; thus, the orchestra’s existence simply remains ambiguous, a souvenir and witness of this shift from one social rule to another. The indetermination that seems to resonate through the instruments, which are ideologically connected to the stereotypical image of the ever-so-civilized European colonialist, reflects the lack of being embedded in tradition and local values. My lifetime (Malaika) is neither a portrait of the musicians, nor is it a documentary about the National Symphony Orchestra of Ghana. Rather, Zdjelar deploys the orchestra in order to allude to a complicated state of affairs in which grand ideas and the mechanism of a nation state project takes root in and affects individuals. “Intersticio” traces the topography of a non-specific site - an in-between zone amid two different points - a mental place of fractured limits and larger amplitude to any physical location. The video presents, from the general to the specific, a panoramic view of a territory of a shifting and unresolved character composed of segmented events that emerge as vague intermittencies among the landscape. This narration of fragmented and ambiguous descriptions portrays by means of found images on digital archives a site full of emotional and aesthetic resonances of permuting nature. The sense of permanent wandering designates an excursion with no precise destination, or that its destination changes progressively and as a consequence this one becomes unpredictable. This trajectory appears to be dictated by the circumstances of an open field, where concrete places are only points among a route, and it is the in-between moments and the continuous state of transition that are the ones that hold significance. Damiani presents a journey through a territory comparable to the contemporary space. A world so ample that those spatial and temporal coordinates essential to historicity appear to be fading leaving behind impressions of unreality and dislocation, characteristic of our postmodern culture. Elena Damiani was born in Lima, Peru, in 1979. She lives and works in London, UK Jordi Colomer (ES, 1962) Co-Op City, 2010 Colour, sound, 8 min. 13 sec. Courtesy the artist and Meessen Declercq, Brussels. Produced by Co-produciones, Barcelona with the collaboration of the Bronx Museum of Arts and the Institut Ramon Llull Jordi Colomer takes an interest in the relationship between urban space and human activity. The film Co-op City articulates itself around a character who reenacts his own activity. The artist here focuses on Co-op city, a 40 tower area built in the seventies in the middle of the Bronx, the New York city borough. Today, as shown in the film, none of its 50 000 inhabitants seems to ride the traffic ways, which are strangely devoted to the routes of delivery men. Jordi Colomer was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1962. He lives and works between Barcelona and Paris, France PROGRAMME2 Running time: 58 min. 28 sec. This programme includes works that largely focus on the formal and phenomenological properties of the moving image, on the materiality of film, on perceptual phenomena, and on formal and visual experiments with colour, image, language, text as well as the body. Film and video as painting, as a tool in documenting performative and choreographed rituals, as the time and lens - based result of explorations between animation, found images and the spoken word are some examples one will see here. The works presented mostly articulate structuralist concerns, pay homage to the legacy of experimental film, and subvert linear narrative structures and notions of time. If narrative is deployed it is not so much to tell ‘a story’ but rather to reconstruct and pay homage to the avant-garde and the legacy of modernism, or to articulate the relationship between viewer and image by testing the role of language in this respect. Many of the artists play with perception and highlight the experience of film itself and the position of the viewer in this equation. Often one will observe a recurring concern in the analysis of space – whether filmic or physical – and an exploration of the
39
position of the body. Some of the works rest on pure perceptual or optical play, while others are formally hybrid, combining elements of performance, painting and sculpture or different image sources.

Courtesy Motive Gallery, Brussels In Le yoga par l’image a practiced yoga instructor assumes a succession of classic positions while a seated man is reading from a yoga manual book. He notes that such exercises are designed to allow her ‘to relinquish bodily recognition.’ ‘We’ve all been here before…The only place in our culture left for the exercise of one, or at most two senses…we may remove our shoes if that helps us remove our bodies.’ This quoted text fragment by Hollis Frampton, which refers more properly to the experience of the cinema, serves paradoxically to amplify the embodied self-consciousness of the engaged viewer of the work. Aurélien Froment was born in Angers, France in 1976. He lives and works in Dublin, Ireland. Alexandra Hopf (DE, 1968) Future Show, 2009/2010 Black & white, colour, 9 min. 12 sec. Courtesy Cruise & Callas, Berlin The video “Future Show” belongs to a body of work of the same title by artist Alexandra Hopf. The film investigates an exhibition staged in the Museum of NonObjective Art in New York in 1948 in the style of a documentary. All exhibits that appear within “Future Show” have been reconstructed as individual artworks by Hopf and emerge within the video, with each image dissolving into the next, forming a visual stream. “Future Show” takes on the ideas of architect Friedrich Kiesler who, in opposition to the white cube, offered a diversified viewing experience of art that imitates our experience within a modern consumer society. Hopf’s film traces images neglected by the selection processes of our consciousness, referencing picture theories by Jacques Lacan and philosopher Georges Didi-Huberman. (Carmen Billows). In the film the act of seeing becomes an event of itself. Whatever occurs during the act of seeing is thrown back as a projection of its environment, even more so in synthesis with the voice-over. The complex information about the act of seeing and the simultaneous act of imagining it, however, is irritating when one attempts to observe it. What remains is the feeling Alexandra Hopf was born in Kassel, Germany in 1968. She lives and works in Berlin, Germany Shimabuku (JP, 1969) Sunrise at Mt. Artsonje, 2007 Colour, 3 min 30 sec. In his travels Shimabuku collects site-specific facts or customs that are unfamiliar to the outsider, but too familiar to local people to be noticed. During a research trip he discovered the unused and forgotten roof space of the Artsonje Centre, Korea where he was invited to do a project and was intrigued by the different perspective he gained from that vantage point. Inspired by this experience, he started to think about treating the museum as a mountain, with its roof as its peak. The artist invited exhibition staff to ‘climb’ to this peak to watch the sunrise together; an unexpected and a fresh experience for the people who work at the museum. As typical opening receptions or art events are held in the afternoon or evening, the artist thought it might be valuable to try the morning, a moment of free time and free space in our daily lives. He asked people to gather at 5:30am. Reflecting on the simple aesthetics of old customs, such as how Asian people eat round cakes during a full moon, a special chef was invited to join the morning hike and cook shiny cutlass fish on the museum rooftop at the shiniest time of day. Then using the cutlass fish as the mirror of a heliograph the artist tried to communicate with beings unknown. Through such studies of communicative and aesthetic traditions Shimabuku hopes to find a way to create new languages and customs. Shimabuku was born in Kobe, Japan, in 1969. Courtesy Galerie Laurent Godin, Paris and Parfums Christian Dior Exploring the physiological colours, the ones that the eye produces after being stimulated by an image or by simple pressure on the eyelid, the film "Bastet" is a fiction about the creation of colors, proceeding under the auspices of the multifaceted goddess of ancient Egypt, Bastet. "The blue of the sky reveals to us the fundamental law of colour." (J.W Goethe, Theory of colours.) "Colours have a shadow. This shadow contains them all, and the colours are active in it. Each colour turns into a moving spectrum. I play on reversals and commutations. At times the shadow is more significant than the visible colour. Likewise, the mass or inside of a statue is a chasm. We call a complex colour, a toned down color. This is to ignore what wells up in it. Often, a bright colour is on call, suspended at the centre of a depression enriched by alteration." (V. Beaurin.) Cage and Aviary Birds is an animation film by Thomas Bogaert made up of a series of drawings on ornithology journals. Ten years ago Bogaert bought a pile of the British journal «Cage and Aviary Birds » (dated from 1968 to 1972) at a flea market in Brussels. From his childhood onwards the artist has had a soft spot for birds, gathering information on the subject over the years. The resulting

collection of journals lay in his studio for years, until one of the covers captured his attention: that of Miss World 1970 with a parrot on her arm. Instantly the obvious connection between sex and birds was made clear and Bogaert decided to produce an erotic animation film. The objective was to make a classic animation film: to use 12 drawings for one second of film on one layer without any computer manipulation. For a few months the artist worked incessantly on this “timeartwork”, drawing one second of time while being conscious of the greater time entity. Based on erotic films of the 1970s, eventually 1400 drawings were required to make a film that would last nearly 3 minutes. Fluorescent paint was used, making the drawings only fully visible under a black light. The soundtrack – a track by Japanese space rock king Kawabata Makato – complements the delirious aspect of the fluorescent paint and the vibrant pictorial nature of the work. Wojciech Bakowski (PL, 1979) Spoken Movie 5, 2010 Black & white, sound, 5 min. 56 sec. Courtesy the artist and Martin Van Zomeren, Amsterdam Spoken Movie 5 is based on domestic neurosis: the narrator guides us through his closed room, describing his everyday objects. The poetic narration of the film is closely combined with the image, and the two elements are in fact inseparable. The understanding of the text without the image is hermetic, since the imagination inherent to the film can only reveal its abstract sense through the combination with the image. Wojciech Bakowski was born in Poznań, Poland in 1979. He lives and works in Poznań Joan Jonas (USA, 1936) Mirror Improvisation, 2004 Colour, sound, 6 min. 35 sec. Copyright the artist, Courtesy Wilkinson Gallery, London Shot almost entirely in a convex mirror, two women, including Jonas, are reflected performing in a bright open field. The women, wearing pink tutus and tall green paper hats and accompanied by Jonas’ prominent white dog, seem to be enacting rituals and playing games. Their movements are animated by changes of speed as they investigate, arrange and rearrange objects: mirrors, paper flags, swords, round and square hammers and metal hoops. Accompanied by Jason Moran’s distinct piano music, the women stage a sword fight before running away in to the distance. Jonas expertly uses the mirror as a framing device. The reflections and angles merge fantasy and reality, creating an abstract and dreamlike world through performance, video, sound and sculpture. The video was made as a part of ‘The Shape, The Scent, The Feel of Things’ commissioned by Dia:Beacon, New York, 2005 and 2006. Many props used in the video featured in the live performance. Felicia and Zurich draws analogies between the interest in movement and action. A 1962 Hollywood soundtrack is redefined by a principal dancers movement within an art exhibition, and finally, it becomes clear that the recorded movement of a modern dancer is analogous to the physical lines Granat scratches on her film stock. Felicia in Zurich exemplifies a sustained interest in the language and context of cinema, a recording of a physical process and, finally it's relationship to the human body. Amy Granat is widely acknowledged for her experimental 16millimetre films, having developed a distinct visual language unified by movement, absence, dissonance, and exploration of the sublime. Coming out of an experimental tradition, Granat distinguishes herself by superseding strict Materialist or Structuralist concerns to engage with the full lyrical capacity of her medium. Demonstrating a holistic approach to the total potential of film itself: as a technology, as a narrative form, as a physical object, and fundamentally as a document of activity transmitted through time and light. Amy Granat was born in St. Louis, USA, in 1976. She lives and works in New York. Bijlage 4.
