Organisaties: _BOLWERK

TV:
TVj-SET : full tv programme
* Toon Aerts – Dialing The Devil (2001) Dialing The Devil is a wink at numerous road movies of the Seventies and pays tribute to the rawness and spontaneity of these movies. Zeffry Williams sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a Cadillac. The consequences are disastruous, but more important than the plot is the ironic wink at an existing filmic language and the amazing montage. Before switching to Audiovisual Arts at St.-Lukas Brussel, Toon Aerts already studied communication sciences for two years. He has already made several shorts and audiovisual works, including ‘Destroy All Planets’, i.e. Brussel visited by flying saucers with explicit visual references to David Lynch, and ‘Beats in Space’, whereby sampling documentary images on 4 screens generates new songs. www.dialingthedevil.com *
Koen Van Mierlo & Michael Perdieus – Killing Time (2001 )
In this 3D animation Chiome is stuck in a clock, making his existence inconsolable. Nevertheless, there is a way out, a door, but it takes courage – and an enormous awareness of hopelessness – in order to close that door behind him. Outside, a world of light, splendour and rythm opens up to Chiome. ‘Killing Time’ confronts us with the monotony of pre-programmed schemes in which we take refuge in fear of the unknown. In a way, television is a contemporary clock in which we are trapped, an outstanding example of an instrument to kill time. Koen Van Mierlo studied animation film and wants to become the European John Lasseter.
* Stoav Stoav Graphique has been active in the creative field for the last four years working in a variety of of disciplines, ranging from print and multimedia, to motion video and audio design. Stoav Graphique has moved in and out of the corporate and art world, focusing on visual aesthetics and user frindly design. www.stoav.be
* Kim Vandenbergh
– De waarheid over Hans en Grietje (2001)
A fairy tale for children who have outgrown stories. – Sportlife & Blackberry A boys band whose teeth can’t be white enough and the toilet consequences of an extra long drink. Two commercials for existing products parody the artificial lightness of advertising. / beteugeling noch frictie
* Pleix – Itsu This work by PLEIX collective constitutes a kind of parable of our consumer society and its hysteria. PLEIX collective adopts a visual language that blurs relationship with reality and provokes a strange unease. This is a film for Plaid’s track “Itsu” on Warp records. www.pleix.net
* Pleix – Beauty Kit Series of four advertisements for plastic surgery kits intended for young girls. This openly serious and seductive project plays with the limits of ambiguity. A combination of neat graphics and harmonized colors intensify the duplicity of formal and sense. www.pleix.net
* Jess De Gruyter – We gonna need a bigger boat “The three big films I saw as a child in the theatres (cinema Rubens!) still have an important influence. I have taken 2 frames of each scene and pasted them together to create an accelarated effect that still remains readable. The resting-points are those scenes which have impressed me the most. They are also essential for the rhythm of the whole.”
* Thomez– doRUS, the happy man In a country where the rain comes out of the ground and where roofs fly above your head, doRUS is and stays a happy man. He is a way of life.
* Golden Shower – Total Control Brazilian electronic sensation GOLDEN SHOWER is back with a sequel to “Video Computer System”, their 2000 music video honored with a MTV-Brazil best electronic music video award and official selection on the New Venue. ‘Total Control’, directed by Carlos Bêla and Mario Sader, celebrates the ‘80s. The central motif is based on TCR-like electric car toys. www.goldenshower.gs
* Brecht Vanhoenacker – België-Turkije (2001) Jan Ceulemans and Maria Callas, might seem to be two incompatible idols, but not to Lex. His family members all have their own frustrations and occasionally throw things at eachother. When Lex fails to get a ticket for the football match België – Turkije, all hell breaks loose.
* Joelle Van Autreve en Niek Delcourt – Television ruined my life An investigation of filmic conventions by means of bluekey technique, computermanipulation and an elaborate montage and on the basis of Nicole Kidman’s performance in ‘To die for’.
* Klaartje Puttemans - Conception * Eva Van Straelen – Rick & Kimberly A soap conversation extract is the soundtrack to a shadow-show. The characters are unidentifiable, the dialogues even more so.
* Lenny Van Wesemael – Twee mannen op café/Acteursoefening This work by Lenny Van Wesemael reminds us of the typical teenage television soaps. The situations are recognisable and therefore very humane.
* Lenny Van Wesemael – 3.35 a.m./Dagmar en Nele Both short films remind us of the typical teenage television soaps. The situations are recognisable and therefore very humane: jealousy, misunderstanding and hurting each other without even realising...
* Marc Roels
– Concern (2000)
Half painted, half filmed ‘Concern’ is a concatenation of wicked images. The subject – a neighbour is concerned about the old and lonely man who lives across the street – is deeply moving and intense. Marc Roels was born in South Africa and moved to Belgium at the age of 16. In 2001 he became a qualified animation filmmaker.
* NL Design NL Design uses simple graphics and animations with an interest in repetitive images to criticize the commercialisation of design and the copy-paste culture.
* Guerilla News Guerilla News Network (GNN) is an underground news organization with headquarters in New York City. Their mission is to expose people to important global issues through guerilla programming on the web and on television. www.guerillanews.com
* Daniel Daniel – Home travel Home Travel is a series of ‘music clips’ whereby the different actions take place in a house, a kind of bizarre voyage through the interior of everyday life. Daniel Daniel paints and sculpts. He also makes films and music to accompany his mobile sculptures.
* Laurent Point – Escalier, carrelage, piano, esplanade series of loops exploring the relationship between body and architecture.
* Laurent Talbot – L’apprenti Laurent Talbot made this movie while working in an animation studio in Luxemburg. Weary of living in a universe of teddy bears and other god-natured creatures, he created this disquieting and fascinating short movie that was presented at the Festival of Fantastic Film in Brussels.
* Nico Leunen – Nadaville, USA Nico Leunen brings us live coverage from Nadaville, USA. Like most live coverages, nothing really seems to be happening on the spot, especially not in the smallest town in Colorado!
* Bart Van Dijck – Pauze This movie, inspired by Jordanian images shown on tv during prayers, serves as a pause and a moment of reflection.
* Jeroen Van der Stock & David Vandeweyer – Kandaris-Kaneel-Theorie (2000) An evolution theory: the kangaroo, who has to flee from the burning Australian woods, arrives after a long swimming excursion as a dromedary and has to adapt to a completely different environment.
* Toon Soetewey – De treindeal the process of filmmaking and a director who struggles with his mojo, interrupted (as is more and more the case on actual television) by another short movie ‘De kleine geneugten des levens’: a short series of semi-marginal portraits.
* Raphaël Vandeputte & Iwan Verhulst – Letters lekker gelegd These two typographers and performers make slapsticklike écriture automatique with the help of big black rubber letters, which were used to compose advertisement slogans in American supermarkets, long before there were digital fonts. An initially simple message gives rise to all sorts of associations.
* Design is dead - Jetona:center of balance While the idea that other worlds lie parallel to our own and occasionally connect with it is one of the oldest ideas in fiction and legend, Jetona:Center of balance is a re-imagining of the metaphor through which the entropic fate of a macrocosm, the Universe, can be linked to the fate of societies and of the individual. In its strict meaning entropy is a thermodynamics term to describe the amount of heat that must be put into a closed system to bring it to a given state. To put it less technically: it is the measure of a system’s energy that is unavailable for work. Since work is obtained from order, the amount of entropy is also a measure of the disorder of a system. Although life itself is a highly ordered state and its very existence is an example of negative entropy, it is venturesome to see negentropy versus entropy as a countdown to total randomness, no life, the end. It is also venturesome to think that sorrow, rusting, cooling and death contrive to be held at bay, locally and occasionally, by passion and love and movement.
* GNOCCI * Damage * Low fixed media show * Ik zie je graag * Stef Deneer * TaXi Val MenteK * Jennifer Debauche * Nicolas Steenlant * Anne-mie Van Kerckhoven * Tomkomtook * Dizzasterr --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ZAPMACHINEROOM : full tv programme
* Karen Vanderborght – Contemporaries Like in the song, the images bring a naïve message. The beginning deconstructs the situation of the spectator (in the cinema, in life), looking at the others. It ends in a childish play between music and image. The video is part of a VHS-compilation tape titled ³Kiila-Heartcore-video², to be published in the summer of 2002 by the music label Fonal Records.
* Antonin de Bemels – Scrub solo 3: Soliloquy Part three of a series of videochoreographic films with Bud Blumenthal, exploring the interaction between dancer, camera, light and scrubbing. www.periactes.be/antonindb
* Filip Van Dingenen – Voodoo Cheerleading The cheerleader is a tour guide/animator who cheers at us, standing in an artificial space and dancing like party people (cfr. MTV ‘at the Grind’) Just like the G. O. (Gentle Organisator or animators at Club Med), the cheerleader has to express a feel-good vibe. The G. O. is responsible for the success of the exotic dream vacation. www.fantaman.net
* Laurent Point – Escalier, carrelage, piano, esplanade A series of loops exploring the relationship between body and architecture.
* Bart Van Dijck – Alien Workshop An alien’s wife lands on earth, leaving chewing gum behind as a means of procreation. A mix of crop circles and Arabic video clips.
* Jess De Gruyter – Lachen Jess De Gruyter often finds his sampling material in old movies and pays them tribute in this way. The sharp editing of short extracts creates a particular and puzzling atmosphere
* Anouk De Clercq - Whoosh Portapak is dedicated to the production, promotion and distribution of the work by videoartist anouk de clercq and of joint projects with related artists, exploring the relations between different artforms. The film ‘Whoosh’ explores the mechanical nature of the body and the intellect contrasted against life. The film’s rhythm is determined by the textual graphics. www.portapak.be
* taXi Val MenteK – Hoover 53 An old skool hoover model rides about on a sandy river bank.
* Jeroen Van der Stock – S8-loop A man with a handicapped leg goes out fishing ink fish with a woollen bait his wife has prepared for him. While he is cooking his prey and delicacy, the woman powders her lips. The cooked ink fish ends up between the woman’s legs, as a substitute for the man, referring to 18th century Japanese erotic pictures in which ink fish already had a highly sexual connotation.
* Mijnlabel – Passer Laisser A man and a woman are facing each other, immobile, until the woman grasps the wrests of the man. Lying in his heartbeat are nine images, in a mosaic.
* Carolin Lerch – Pilot This music video is a tribute to the maker’s opel kadett, that ‘died’ only recently. It’s a surreal daydream about simple daily situations. (music by Notwist)
* Stefan Serneels – Rest piece Stefan Serneels’ work is a constant dialogue between the mechanic and the organic. This video, which accompanied an installation, shows the plaster cast of an armchair drowning and crumbling away in a water basin, while the mechanic noise of pumps drowns every sound. * Danny Devos * Toon aerts * Isabelle Nouzha * tddy * Henning Bronger * Hortext ….

Basically, the VLIGHT.MXR is a mixing tool for shockwave-flash movies. You can load any SWF-file and mix it with others on up to three different layers. VLIGHT.MXR allows scratching, modulation in various modes, sampling and sequencing of the loaded movies. It is a visual synthesizer.
Kong Karl Land
(live) www.tinez.be / www.pxl.be A multimedia presentation whereby sound, image and presentation are brought together in one theme: the first generation of computer games (1970-1980). Naturally, the emphasis will be on the aesthetics of this period. The music itself is influenced by the specific atmosphere of the sounds of commodore and atari, but also by the most revolutionary sound of the eighties: the original electro – a remarkable attempt to bring forth soul and funk combined with the new digital and ‘inhumane’ technology.
Os Gauchos do Pelatão (live) www.boutiquevizique.com
Os Gauchos do pelatão is a collective of multidisciplinary AV artists, formed by members of ·boutique·vizique· and [lahaag.org]. This time they have joined forces with praecox (el picaro del tigra) especially for the Zaplap event. Os Gauchos explore the boundaries of live AV performance with homemade AV treatment patches in the nato.0+55 and MAX/MSP programming environment. They have build a new enriched interface assuring the possibilities of freestyle and experiment on sound and image. It will be hard to tell if vision triggers audition or the other way round. And they definitely cannot choose between art and science, noise and pop, video and audio. So they decide to do all. With the necessary digit and hardware tools for the job they will make sure its both convenient and unseizable at the same time. Os gauchos stand warrant for a show that feeds the retina, jams the ear and dazzles the mind.
Chemisch circus + vjactand (live) www.chemischcircus.be
Waldo, graphic designer and dj, teams up with Chemisch Circus to bring a video performance that interacts with the surroundings, the music and the public. Chemisch Circus a collective that combines video, audio, graphics, … and stresses the interaction with the public in order to broaden their minds. Waldo is very known in Belgium to be one of the first underground DJ’s who created a cocktail of destructive-weird-highly-emotional-surprising though moving but at the same time listening-music DJ-sets. His musical background starts very early when he starts to follow classical music-courses at the age of 6. He is convinced that his passion for music is annex with the visual aspect. He studied Graphics at the academy of Ghent. He has been designing the flyers for FGA since the beginning and his graphic style is one of the most inspiring in Belgium. Not long ago he started to perform live with his own tracks. On this event he will be seen for the second time live. Expect a cocktail of moody quality electronica.
Stanzacrew
(vj) www.stanzacrew.com Stanzacrew, dutch based vj collective, who are spending too much time with their computers. Now they are bringing the visuals on to the streets. The 3 members combine vector art with pictures and graphic sequenses. Performing with electronic artists, organising parties and being cultural incorrect, Stanzacrew tries to combine the visuals with the music they like. Stanzacrew’ visuals are a combination of digital video, motion pictures and vector animations. All these elements are mixed live on the music. Stanzacrew only uses own material as resource. Stanzacrew are: Emiel Bokkinga, Robert Meijerink and Sjoerd Overbeek.
Yeti
(dj) www.peacefullspecies.be After a couple of years classical music lessons, Yeti’s interests in innovating music styles started about 6 years (1996) ago, especially influenced by the dark new wave and gothic sounds. He started to spin bliiptechno and acid until he discovered the braindance sounds of Rephlex and stuff from Aphex Twin, µ-ziq, Squarepusher, Reload, Autechre, f.s.o.l., acid kirk, seal phuric, lester lewit ... In 1999 he organised the first Apparatus, a party to promote innovating artists and music. Later Yeti became a part of Peacefull Species and Species and Apparatus are now one. Now he is really into jungle, braindance, ambient, acid, experimental electro/techno and hardcore. Always something suprising... He is also working on live material but still in an early fase.
Somatic Responses (dj vs. live) http://somatics.c8.com
John and Paul Healy, collectively known throughout the world as Somatic Responses, are native residents of a small industrial mining community snugly located in the southwest region of Wales. Amongst the 20,000 inhabitants of the town of Ammanford, a sometimes-overbearing intimacy exists, where everyone knows everyone else, and where traditional Welsh lifestyle is still the common trend. The town’s location alone lends to this rustic ambiance, as it rests in the middle of a rolling, quiet valley, suggesting a sort of refusal to compete in the technological race. This is all quite an interesting backdrop indeed, when considering it has been the environment in which the Somatic Responses have consistently produced some of the world’s most abrasive and original electronic music for the past 10 years. As John Healy states, “Our lives are completely external to this environment and lifestyle... our sound has no deep connection to our surroundings. I think we care more about where we are mentally than where we are physically, with reference to our music.”
Syncopated Elevators Legacy
(live) http://www.elfcut.net
The Syncopated Elevators Legacy is one of the monikers of Brussels-based Cédric Stevens, also known as Acid Kirk and for his Phlegm and Psychonauts projects on Reload Ambient. Syncopated was the first installment on the Brussels Elfcut label, that also issues work of Rawakari, Capitol K and Lester Lewitt. Apostasy (1998) and The Siamese Level are born of precise experiments combining analogue textures, acoustic sessions and ‘concrete’ recordings. The result is a psychedelic cacophony of topsy-turvy sounds, atmospheres and emotions, gleaned from the cutting edge of the most daring patches. Records in which (non?) musicality emerges from chaos. Records to be listened to but above all put to good use. Records that, according to its composer, is dedicated to altered states, suspended time and all those whose deviant mentalities confine expression to the beaten track.
Sickboy
(dj vs. live) http://milkplus.widerstand.org The tradition of combining perversity and playfulness into a true soundclash has never left post-modern music alone, acting as culture vultures ramping their way through carcasses of crispy produced megabits to vigour sampling of smirky headlines. Sickboy has more than upped the ante with this hairsplitting slab of digitized breakestral chaos, never suggesting melodies or functional rhythms it draws from but juggling without remorse on the dividing line between acceptability and grimy flavoured cynism. Gonna clear rooms quicker than a megaton fire alert, and sure to leave the patriotic-minded behind with a hammer smashed face. Music that’ll stir up any godforsaken industrial pigeonhole with a whirlwind... Sickboy has releases going on: audiobot / robo / widerstand / rigid crash / no room for talent / hymen / ...
Antonin de Bemels
(vj) http:// www.periactes.be/antonindb Antonin De Bemels is a Belgian video and sound artist, born in 1975. He studied video art at Erg (Ecole de Recherche Graphique), in Brussels, from 1993 to 1997. In 1998, he met the American choreographer Bud Blumenthal. Together, they made a series of three experimental dance videos, the Scrub Solos, and three dance pieces incorporating video screenings as part of the choreography. He sometimes performs as a vj during electronic music shows. As a sound artist, he made radio pieces for the Radiolab program in 2000, and he created original soundtracks for some contemporary dance pieces, and for some of his own videos.
Rawakari (live)
Nibis
(dj) www.fga.be / www.vlux.tk A dj with a unique and own vision on electronic music. Started to play various instruments at a very early age and started to DJ after hearing bands as KRS-one, Digable Planets, ... After visiting the first acid and techno parties in Ghent he turned to electronic music. He went to Rotterdam to study audio engineering at the SAE and started to spin at the ‘Bootleg’ a small club, home to some of Holland’s finest electro-dj’s.
He started to organise his own events and finally joined the FGA-crew. Nibis plays from atmospheric electronics to pumping ghettotech, from minimal chill sounds to abstract experimental techno, but always keeping quality in mind.
Spacid
(dj) www.fga.be Party-event coördinator, based in Ghent, Belgium. As founder of the FGA organization and booking agency, mainly concerned with promoting experimental music and introducing international artists to the Belgian scene, Spacid always had a good vision on experiment in audio and video. Things started to speed up for Spacid as he was asked to play at some of the biggest clubs and raves in Belgium and abroad (Dance valley, Ten days off, Kozzmozz, …) Nowadays he works for the Music Man record shop in Ghent and is responsible for the line-up of the Kozzmozz electro room. Spacid tries to fuel the dance floor with the energy from behind his turntables. He knows how to mix all sorts of varieties and adapts to different atmospheres such as experimental ambient, noise, Chicago, minimal and experimental techno, acid, breakcore, drum’n bass and his favourite at the moment: nu skool electro.
StaticFish
(dj) www.ghentsessions.be New years eve 2000. Sitting in a friend’s couch, drawing an abstract fish-like figure on a blank piece of paper… StaticFish is born. Who am I really? Michiel Vanden Broecke, age 27, always looking for new musical endeavours. I got introduced with electronic music through friends, lending me the first Thunderdome compilations. A bit fed up with the harshness and aggression of hardcore, I started looking for something more melodic, more abstract. That’s how I got in contact with labels like Mille Plateaux, Musik Aus Strom, Worm Interface, Sonig etc. At the same time a few new-made friends asked me to join them spending every Friday night making a radio show called MixTrix. For two years we had great moments inviting guests like Waldo, Spacid, Celtric, Nibis, SmartElectronix… Sadly enough the show no longer exists (we didn’t fit in the radio station’s profile anymore…).
Nowadays I’m mainly busy producing my own music (described best as ‘polyrhythmic soundscapes’) and organising the Ghent Sessions with Bram De Jong.
Affective Disorder vs. Undacova
(dj vs. live) www.bliip.com / http://come.to/undacova Affective disorder is known as a real computer freak, hacking his way through the internet to find samples or recording his mother to make a song out of it... He first released on Hardisk label, the ‘Emotion Engineering’ EP. Now he makes very experimental ambient and clicks and cuts, his next release will probably be a chill record on the second label of the Bliip Company. Undacova uses his computer and a pain in the ass microphone to create experimental electronic soundscapes, ranging from abstract ambient to limitlessly broken break beat madness ever since his fascination for (former?) internet-artists like Kyllönen, Ylikulju, DOSC, Bogdan Raczynski, Brothomstates,… reached its peak. Quote: Live performances will not occur until Bush is shot.

Remote Control 0 – 29/08/99
Remote Control 1 - 14-20/08/00
… the story continues.
