Graduate Employability Is of Vital Importance to Us, Says Prof. Petr Sáha, Rector of TBU Even though students count their time at the University mainly in academic years and semesters, the civil year is an important period in the university life as well. We talked to Prof. Petr Sáha, Rector of TBU, about important events that took place at Tomas Bata University in 2013. Prof. Sáha, which are the most significant events that took place at TBU in 2013? Of course, there was a whole series of important events happening at TBU. Therefore, I would like to emphasize two of them which have the biggest impact on students. Actually, the first one occurred shortly before last Christmas: The European Commission awarded us the ECTS Label. This abbreviation stands for the highest award which can be given to a university in a European Union country. It is a confirmation

that we really are a world-class university, that we are fully involved in the international educational area. In the whole Europe, only about sixty higher education institutions have been awarded this certificate. The second sphere which I would like to highlight is the field of construction activities: This year we completed the construction of the Laboratory Centre of the Faculty of Technology at a cost of CZK 500 million, and we also started the construction of the Centre of Polymer Systems worth more than CZK 300 million. During the past years, our University has been the most active investor in Zlín. What is the benefit of these constructions to our students? First, I would like to speak about the Laboratory Centre: The Faculty of
Technology is the oldest component part of our University - in 2014 the Faculty will celebrate 45 years of its existence. That’s the reason why it is still located in the oldest of the University buildings, which, as to its capacity, does not meet the present needs of the Faculty anymore. The Laboratory Centre will provide the required spaces for the Faculty – in particular laboratories, but also lecture halls and seminar rooms – intended for classes in Master’s and doctoral programmes, and, of course, for research activities. The Centre will be opened at the start of the summer semester – everyone at the Faculty is looking forward to it. The Centre of Polymer Systems will then become a research facility ensuring international parameters for research into polymer systems and for the use of the latest Continued on page 5

Události roku 2013 Do roku 2013 vstoupila naše univerzita s prestižním certifikátem ECTS Label. Our University started the year 2013 on a successful note having been awarded the prestigious ECTS Label certificate. The University received the highest ranking certificate awarded to universities within the European Union from the European Commission. “The award of the certificate is recognized as a proof that our University ranks among the world’s top universities and that it has been fully involved in the area of international education,” said Prof. Petr Sáha, Rector.

Forget about the Employment Office! TBU Job Centre has had a very fruitful first year of its existence. The Centre principally aims to help the University graduates to find employment, but it also offers internships, practical trainings, temporary jobs, as well as other support services. Within the first twelve months of its existence, 89 TBU graduates succeeded in getting a job thanks to the Job Centre.
The long-awaited construction of the TBU Centre of Polymer Systems (CPS) commenced in spring 2013. On 19 April the building contractor took over the construction site and on 18 June, immediately after the necessary demolition and clearing work and preparations were finished, the foundation stone ceremony was held. “Thanks to the project of the Centre of Polymer Systems a modern research unit will be built that will ensure international parameters for research into polymer systems and the use of the latest technology. Research into polymers has a long-lasting tradition in Zlín and within that period we managed to reach international level in this sphere,” says Prof. Petr Sáha, TBU Rector.

events
Events of the Year 2013 Pětapadesát posluchačů UTB úspěšně v loňském roce dokončilo doktorské studium na některé z fakult naší univerzity. 31. ledna si během slavnostního shromáždění akademické obce v univerzitní aule převzali diplomy. Absolventi doktorského studia pocházejí z nejrůznějších zemí, například z Belgie, Švýcarska, Ruska, Gruzie, Arménie, Jordánska nebo Kolumbie. A total of fifty five TBU students succeeded in completing doctoral studies at some of the faculties of our University within the last year. They received their diplomas during the gathering of the academic community in the University Assembly Hall on 31 January. PhD graduates come from different countries, for example, from Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Jordan or Colombia. UTB letos podpořila závěrečný koncert hudebního festivalu Harmonia Moraviae, který každoročně pořádá Filharmonie Bohuslava Martinů. 26. Společně jsme slavnostně zahájili akademický a školní rok,“ uvedl rektor UTB prof. Petr Sáha. This year TBU supported the final concert of the Harmonia Moraviae music festival, which is held annually by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra. On 26 October Pietro Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria Rusticana, conducted by Walter Atanasi, resounded the main hall of the Congress Centre in Zlín. Head teachers and teachers from grammar schools and other secondary schools in Zlín were invited to attend the concert and meet the TBU academic staff in an informal environment. “It was an act of appreciation of the effective cooperation between our institutions. We thus commenced the academic and the school year together,” said Prof. Petr Sáha, TBU Rector.
According to the numbers of attendees to the autumn higher education fairs, it seems that in the following year TBU will enjoy an abundance of new applicants. Almost 9,000 applicants visited the TBU exposition stand during the Akadémia fair in Bratislava and the Gaudeamus fair in Nitra and Brno. Besides information brochures and the University magazines, they also received interesting promotional items – University T-shirts, mobile phone hangers, buttons, etc. A number of other students interested in the University attended the Open Day.

Celkem bude v centru pracovat více než 120 vědeckých pracovníků, a to nejen z České republiky.

Kaufland, Aircraft Industries a další.

Continued from page 1 technology. That means that the Centre will offer career opportunities for the best students who, after completion of studies, will continue their research career. The total number of researchers employed in the Centre will exceed 120 persons coming not only from the Czech Republic. The fact is that we have achieved the international level in polymer research, and, therefore, our University is attractive to scientists from abroad. You have mentioned the field of polymers; TBU ranks among world´s top institutions in polymer research and also in classes focusing on polymers. Which are the specializations, besides polymers, in which our University has achieved an excellent level? We produce excellent results also in the field of automation and control of technological processes, informatics, economics, food technology and in specializations in arts. But we can guarantee students a high quality of teaching in any of our degree courses. Applicants for study are surely interested in their future employability. What are the activities pursued by TBU in this regard? Graduate employability is of vital importance to us. Therefore, we do our best to avoid problems with graduate unemployment. For instance, we monitor the demand for graduates from the labour market and adapt the offer of degree courses or modify the degree courses currently offered in a certain manner. However, that is not all – we also actively help graduates with job search. Last year we launched the Job Centre, which is a sort of our own “Employment Office”. Students are not only offered suitable jobs, but also, for example, internships, counselling on topics of Master’s theses, job interview trainings, etc. It has proven to be the right decision to make – at present, other higher education institutions tend to launch similar facilities.
17th November: Refectory Offered Meals with Names Associated with the Communist Regime No other public holiday is associated with students as much as the Anniversary of 17 November. Within the 20th century this day became a double symbol for a student struggle against totalitarianism: first, in 1939 against German occupation, then, 50 years later, against communism. Students at our University do not forget about the students of those days, who dared to stand up for democracy, and every year they commemorate the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day. This year the commemoration events commenced on 11 November and were focused mainly on the dramatic events of 1989. “We installed a statue at the Peace Square, which had been designed by students of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications. Anyone could hang useless keys on the statue. The more keys there were hanged, the more
the statue grew, which was supposed to symbolize new opportunities that opened up to people after the Velvet Revolution,” said Kristýna Koláčková, event manager. The highlight of the events took place on 18 November. During this day an exhibition of books which were banned during the totalitarian regime was on display in the University Library, meals with names associated with the communist regime were served in the Refectory and TV advertisements from the 1980s were screened in the University buildings. The commemoration events were concluded by a procession holding candles and walking through the town and an evening screening of a movie entitled ‘Maturita v listopadu’ (Taking the Secondary School Leaving Examination in November).
Finding a Job Is No Problem at All An opportunity to find a job or employment during studies, to get acquainted with what is required of applicants by the Human Resources, to choose a topic for one’s thesis or to arrange an internship or a trainee programme in a company. These are the main goals of the Career Opportunities Fair, which is held at TBU regularly twice a year. The autumn Fair was organized to take two days this year and each day was aimed at a different target group. The first day was organized in cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities.

“It was primarily aimed at students in degree courses in Social Pedagogy, Andragogy for Human Resource Management in NonProfit Sector, Preschool Teacher Training, Health and Social Care Worker, General Nurse, as well as for other interested persons,” said Mgr. Anna Krátká, Ph.D., FHS Vice-Dean for Lifelong Learning and Practical Training. Institutions, such as Dotek, o. p. s. Vizovice, Maltézská pomoc, o. p. s., Uherské Hradiště Hospital, civic association Hvězda, the Zlín Region, but also some business and industrial
companies, such as, e.g. Kaufland, Aircraft Industries and other presented themselves to the students. The second day was aimed mainly at finding job opportunities in industry, business and services. “Companies, such as Automotive Lighting, Barum Continental, Deloitte Advisory, Edhouse, IBM, Miele, Škoda Auto and other presented themselves to the students,“ said Assoc. Prof. David Tuček, TBU Vice-Rector for Social Affairs. More than 1,300 students attended the job fair within the two days.

Zlín a filmová tvorba. Tyto pojmy dnes patří k sobě více než Zlín a boty.
Univerzita pod jedním knírem Od listopadu letošního roku zase o něco více lidí zná pojmy Mo Bros a Mo Sistas – díky naší univerzitě. Někteří z nich zahájili i zakončili Movember společným focením před Univerzitním centrem.

I Am Incredibly Lucky in Life, Says Actress Tereza Voříšková Zlín and film production. At present, these terms are associated with one another even more than Zlín and shoes. Our University educates future filmmakers; and movies and series known by spectators as well as film experts all over the world have been made in the Zlín film studios for 80 years. Within the past weeks, shooting of the second season of the popular series ‘Znamení koně’ (Sign of the Horse) produced by the Czech Television began in the studios and other sites within the region. A number of renowned actors will star in the series again, such as Vilma Cibulková, Bolek Polívka, Richard Krajčo or Oldřich Navrátil. Tereza Voříšková, popular young actress, performs one of the lead roles, namely, Klára Kalinová. At the beginning of one of the autumn shooting days she gave us an interview about her role, as well as about the opportunities for a 24year old person to win recognition abroad in his/her profession. You perform the role of Klára in the Sign of the Horse after four years. Is it difficult to reprise the same role after quite a long time? Or will Klára be different in the new season? It is not difficult to reprise the role, because you are somehow used to impersonating that character. What’s more, the personality of the character has changed a lot within the series. All of a sudden, she’s grown up, she can’t ride, she is too busy…I think that she is going through a very tough time, which I find professionally challenging. In what other film projects and television projects are you involved at the present time? We have just finished the shooting of a Canadian series; now I am working on a television movie entitled ‘Reportéři a ti druzí’ (Reporters and the Others) with Dan Svátek and we are going to start shooting the movie ‘Život je život’ (Life Is Life). There
are some projects planned for the winter, but I would rather avoid talking about them for now. How is it possible for such a young actress to win recognition abroad? You have acted in a number of international series, which have been aired on Czech channels as well. I am also quite surprised by that. I think that I am really lucky in life… I hope that my luck will hold. Which of your parts is your favourite? It very much depends on what I am working on at the moment. I really like ‘Zemský ráj to na pohled’ (An Earthly Paradise for the Eyes) and also ‘Terapie’ (Therapy), which airs on HBO at the moment. Shooting of ‘Alois Nebel’ with Tomáš Luňák and Mirek Krobot was also an invaluable experience, although I played only a supporting part. Besides starring in movies, do you have enough time to perform on stage?
Being a full-time stage actress would be impossible for me to due to my busy schedule. Nevertheless, I have a guest role in the Ponec Theatre. Listening to you – aren’t you just envious of the people of your age who enjoy a trouble free student life, while you are extremely busy? Yesterday I was thinking just about that, imagining myself lying on a carpet, smoking cigarettes and listening to my friends performing unplugged, just as it used to be at the time I studied at the conservatoire (laughs). But I’m not envious of them. I’m enjoying my life. Will the audience of the Zlín film festival have an opportunity to meet you? Sometime in the future they will, hopefully. I have not managed to attend the festival so far – on the other hand, as I spend so much time here during the shooting, there is no need to go to the festival (laughs).
University United under One Moustache The number of people who know the terms ‘Mo Bros’ and ‘Mo Sistas’ has grown since this November – thanks to our University. Supporters from among the University students, staff and other friends decided to join this year’s international movement ‘Movember’. The Movember movement is an independent global charitable organization, originally from Australia, which raises funds for prostate and testicular cancer. The main identification feature for the movement supporters is a moustache: Every 1 November they start growing their moustache, and avoid shaving it for the rest of the month.
2013 winter
TBU students, staff and friends joined the Movember movement for the first time this year. For example, Director of TBU Library, PhDr. Ondřej Fabián, or Director of TBU Halls of Residence and Refectory, Ing. Miroslav Procházka, decided to grow a moustache. “I think that events of this kind are really meaningful. All of us, me and the Library staff, are happy to join charity campaigns,” said Ondřej Fabián. A total of 250 supporters joined the event. Some of them initiated and closed the Movember by taking a group photo in front of the University Centre.

Vyrostl u Bati, dnes podporuje naše studenty Podpořit vzdělávání a odkaz podnikatelské filozofie Tomáše Bati – to je hlavní záměr Ceny Ing.
„Hokejový tým UTB má s pořádáním mezinárodních zápasů bohaté zkušenosti – za poslední dva roky jsme odehráli utkání proti čtyřem soupeřům z Finska, Rakouska a Velké Británie. Logicky jsme se proto stali jedněmi z prvních, kdo o účast v soutěži projevili zájem,“ říká generální manažer zlínských hokejistů Michal Rudecký. Do premiérové sezóny EUHL se přihlásilo 6 týmů: vedle UTB se jedná o Slovenskou technickou univerzitu, Vysokou školu ekonómie a manažmentu verejnej správy a Peneu-
rópskou vysokou školu z Bratislavy, trenčínskou City University of Seattle a pražskou Univerzitu Karlovu.

Brought Up in Bata School of Work, Today He Supports Our Students To support education and the legacy of the entrepreneurial philosophy of Tomas Bata – that is the main aim of Zdeněk Rybka Award. Every year since 2010, the Award is given to one Master’s student of the Faculty of Management and Economics of TBU in Zlín. The Award has been named after its founder, Ing. Zdeněk Rybka, CSc. Zdeněk Rybka is one of those who completed their education in the popular Bata School of Work, an institution
established by the Bata company in the 1920s, aimed at educating competent and self-confident young people, who later worked for Bata, occupying various positions within the company. More than 10,000 young men and women completed education in the School within the years of its existence. Up to the present day, they are members of the Alumni Club of the Bata School of Work. After finishing school and after taking the secondary school leaving examination,
Zdeněk Rybka got employment in the Savings Bank of the Town of Zlín and devoted almost the whole of his professional life to financial affairs. He served as Chief Executive Officer of the branch office of State Bank of Czechoslovakia in Zlín for 17 years; he occupied the position of Managing Director of Foresbank for four years. At present, Zdeněk Rybka cooperates with the Faculty of Management and Economics.
We Participate in the Creation of the European University Hockey League NHL, KHL, ELH – abbreviations of professional competitions well known to each ice hockey fan. The time may come soon when sports supporters will have learned another abbreviation: EUHL – European University Hockey League. Such are, nevertheless, the plans of the founders of this new university competition in ice hockey. And, much to our delight, our University is among the founders of this ambitious project. The person to inspire the creation of a university league in ice hockey in Europe, similar to the same competition held overseas, was Jaro Straka, a Slovak ice-hockey player, about two years ago. He convinced some of the
members of the Slovak ice hockey national team led by Ľubomír Sekeráš to support this idea. “The TBU ice hockey team has a lot of experience with organizing international matches – during the last two years we played matches against opponents from Finland, Austria and Great Britain. Therefore, we were of course among the first teams interested in joining the competition,” says Michal Rudecký, the general manager of the ice hockey team from Zlín. 6 teams have confirmed their participation in the first season of the EUHL: Besides TBU, the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, School of Economics and Management in Public Administration in Bratislava, Pan-European
University in Bratislava, City University of Seattle located in Trenčín, and Charles University in Prague. Negotiations are underway with other schools in Vienna, Oxford and Budapest. The organizers dream of creating a competition comprising 4 divisions which will feature university teams truly from all over Europe. Zlín was the venue to host the opening match of the League held on 6 November. But the start into the competition did not work out for our champions as they had expected: The 2011 Czech Academic Champions lost both opening matches with final scores of 5:8 and 2:3 to City University of Seattle and to the PanEuropean University, respectively.
Lecture on Responsible Capitalism to Be Held in Prague Again The lecture series on Responsible Capitalism will be continued – the fourth lecture is scheduled to take place in Prague in March 2014. The event will feature Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman of the Board of Nestlé S.A., as the main speaker. “The idea of a lecture series focusing on responsible capitalism came from Mr. Thomas J. Bata. After his death it was Mrs. Sonja Bata who supported the creation of the series. This lecture series is inspired by
the belief of the founder of the Bata company that business is a public trust which should contribute to the well-being of the communities in which it operates,” said Prof. Petr Sáha, TBU Rector. This is the second time that the event will be held in the Czech Republic – in 2012 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh delivered a lecture at Žofín Palace. Two lectures organized within this series took place in Toronto, Canada.
New Equipment in the Library The TBU Library prepared a useful novelty for its users. Visitors can use a specialized book scanner for copying of documents. “The new device has, in addition to functions provided by common scanners, a number of user-friendly properties, e.g. scanning to USB media, an ergonomic foot switch and, especially, the OCR function, a technology developed to convert texts to electronic form in order to enable their processing in form of a computer text,” said PhDr. Ondřej Fabián, Director of the TBU Library.

Nejlepší diplomovou práci v Huddersfieldu obhájila naše posluchačka Nejlepší diplomovou práci na University of Huddersfield – Business School vypracovala posluchačka Fakulty managementu a ekonomiky UTB Martina Hlavatá. S University of Huddersfield spolupracuje zlínská FaME již několik let. Díky společnému double degree studijnímu programu mají naši studenti možnost vycestovat do Anglie na roční studijní pobyt a získat tamní vysokoškolský titul.

Prestigious Geographic Information Systems Days Held in Uherské Hradiště Every third week in November the general public all over the world has an opportunity to learn more about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – tools designed to display and analyse data relating to the Earth’s surface – and about their use in everyday life. This year, our University was among the organizers of the prestigious GIS Days for the first time, thanks to the participation of the Faculty of Logistics and Crisis Management. The daylong event took place on 19 November in cooperation with the Municipality of Uherské
Hradiště and with the support of the Student Association of Uherské Hradiště. “The morning programme focused on secondary schools: More than 150 students got acquainted with basic functions of GIS during thematic lectures, and with practical application of the functions during computer workshops when creating their own maps in form of web applications,” says RNDr. Jakub Trojan from the Department of Environmental Security on behalf of the organizers, and continues: “The programme
block held in the afternoon was open to the general public and featured a lecture series focusing on innovations in GIS and in university classes and on the application of GIS in the public sector administration with a presentation of use of map products available from the Municipality of Uherské Hradiště.” All day long, the visitors could also view large format maps, e.g. the burglary map or the map showing the security camera system of the town drawn using GIS, and participate in various competitions.
A Book on Zlín Wins National Award for Student Design The most prestigious award which students of design within the Czech Republic can receive – National Award for Student Design – goes to our University. Pavel Coufalík has won the Award with his original book entitled ‘Zlín’, in which he portrays the history and architecture
of the town between 1920s and 1980s in a rather unconventional way. After having succeeded in Phenomenon: The Book and Design Talent competitions, the book, about which we wrote in the previous edition of the magazine, has managed to gain the most prominent award so far.
More Awards Going to Our Technology Park The Technology Park focusing on information and communication technologies earns more success: After winning the first prize in the “Construction of the Year in the Zlín Region” contest, the Park has recently received the award entitled “Entrepreneurial Project of the Year”. The Park achieved this success in a contest annually organized by the Czechinvest agency in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The contest is aimed at rewarding the most successful projects funded by European and state grants and is intended for projects which support the innovation potential of companies and the use of modern technologies. The Park launched by the University last year is used mainly by the Faculty of Applied Informatics and also by companies focusing on information technology and applied informatics. What is of particular importance to students is the business incubator located in the Park and intended particularly for start-up companies established by TBU graduates.

Doc.
Pavel Hruda.
Proč ne, řekli si studenti dvou českých univerzit – zlínské UTB a České zemědělské univerzity. Společnými silami vytvořili vůz, s nímž se nyní účastní evropské studentské závodní soutěže Formula student. „Zatímco kolegové z České zemědělské univerzity v Praze měli na starosti konstrukční a technickou
stránku vozu, my jsme navrhli jeho design.

Assoc. Prof. Nabanita Saha Cooperates with Top US Laboratory Since 2001, when she joined the Polymer Centre at the Faculty of Technology, Assoc. Prof. Nabanita Saha, a native of India, can be named as one of the leading researchers employed at our University. At present, she is about to achieve another accomplishment as a researcher: A top US research unit – Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory – has nominated her among 8 candidates for the User Executive Committee (UEC); in January three experts shall be selected from among them who will serve as members of the UEC of the Molecular Foundry during a three-year term of office. If she succeeds
in the election, she will become a member of the management of one of the most important research laboratories in the world. Assoc. Prof. Nabanita Saha obtained her Master’s degree and PhD degree at universities in India; she was awarded the degree of Associate Professor at TBU in 2006. Her main research interest includes particularly biopolymers and the preparation of biopolymer hydrogels, mainly those with medical applications. She focused on this topic during her visit to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California this summer.
Students Stream Lectures to the Whole World Although the lecture entitled “How to (Not) Get Caught in a (Social) Network” which took place at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications on Thursday, 26 September was attended by about 60 students, in reality it was watched by approximately another 120 spectators. They had this opportunity thanks to the live stream provided by the university television station - NEON TV. This lecture held at the Faculty was the first attempt to provide access to lectures for a greater number of students and to the general public through the use of modern TV technology.
Students in degree courses in audiovisual arts prepared live streaming via YouTube, which was available all over the world on mobile phones, tablets and computers. “In future, after we have obtained the appropriate equipment, we will be able to offer live streaming in HD quality as well,” said MgA. Pavel Hruda, Head of Animation Studio. Live streaming is a usual standard for FMC students, but the lecture held on Thursday featured many novelties. “The live transmission is provided directly from the lecture hall, which is connected to a TV studio located in the same building via a 1 km cable.
That means that students carry out the entire transmission from a specialized studio, and only the equipment necessary for audio and video recording is placed in the lecture hall,” said Mgr. Jan Čada on behalf of the university television station NEON TV. The video streaming lecture hall at FMC is, due to its parameters and to low costs of live streaming, an absolutely unique facility, which follows in the long-established tradition of the progressive attitude of the Faculty towards live streaming within the popularization of science and research through live streaming available on the Internet.
Car Built by Students Accelerates to 100 km in 4 Seconds Build one’s own formula style racing car? Why not – that’s what students at two Czech universities – TBU in Zlín and the Czech University of Life Sciences said to themselves. In a team effort they built a car which will participate in the European student engineering competition “Formula Student”. “While colleagues from the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague were in charge of the construction and technical aspects of the car, we created its design. We wanted the car to have sharper features so that it expressed a firm will,” said Mr. Jan Kovalovský, a student of industrial design at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of TBU. The car is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km per hour in under 4 seconds.
Sit by Me! The awareness campaign “Sit by Me!” organized by the Wheelchair Association took place in the Gallery “Vaňkovka” in Brno during three days in October. Ms. Magdalena Hanková, a student of social pedagogy at the Faculty of Humanities of TBU and also a wheelchair user, participated in the panel debate on psychology, relations, sex, parenthood and presented to the audience her Master’s thesis, which she writes on Partner Relations and Sexuality of Physically Handicapped Persons in Young Adulthood.

“When the organizers offered me an opportunity to be a speaker at this conference, I did not hesitate for a second. I consider feedback given by other people really important. Opinions, no matter whether given by an impartial observer or by an expert from the outside, may help you when you write your Master’s thesis,” said the second-year student of a follow-up Master’s programme. The approximately 15-minute speech was followed by a short discussion. People asking questions were
interested both in the student’s personal opinion on the issue dealt with and in selected methodological aspects of the thesis. “I consider the speech at the conference to be valuable experience not only for myself, but also for the audience. I was discussing this topic with some of them and I received a lot of useful advice and recommendations. And, according to their reactions, I had the impression that they share my opinions. I think that the event has fulfilled its purpose,” concludes Magdalena Hanková.

va.

Every Student Can Take Part in a Study Abroad Period Study abroad or apply for studies at a university in the Czech Republic? If you are dealing with a similar issue at the moment, it may be interesting for you that you can combine both. Every student at our University is offered the possibility to spend part of his/ her studies abroad. “At our University practically anyone who is interested in spending a study period abroad has an opportunity to do so,” says Assoc. Prof. Aleš Gregar, Vice-Rector for International Relations, and continues: “At the present time we have about 280 bilateral agreements with universities in different European countries, where students can spend a study period, mostly one semester.” Moreover, TBU has concluded another 87 partnership contracts with universities outside Europe, therefore, if you find Europe too small, you may as well go study to America, for example, or to South East Asia. Two TBU students have shared their own stories and experiences from their study abroad period with us.
It is just up to us when we decide to discover the world, says Michal Zálešák, TBU student I began to plan my study abroad period about a half year before it actually took place. It was necessary to choose an appropriate higher education institution according to the bilateral agreements between the universities abroad and TBU. After spending several days searching, I finally decided to go to Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden. Göteborg is a renowned student city, since there are about 60,000 students studying at the two local universities. From the very first day at the University it was quite obvious that the study environment was completely different to what I had been used to so far. We are assigned a team project in each course unit, which forms an essential part for the completion of the final examination. I thus join a group of students from all over the world, within which extraordinarily interesting discussions are held, and that not only about the project, but also about everyday life. Each break between the lessons tends to be scented with freshly brewed coffee, which is enormously popular in Sweden. It thus comes as no surprise that each break between the classes is called a coffee break. After finishing my classes I decide whether to go swimming and take a sauna or

rather visit one of the nearby islands where I can get by using the public transport. Yes, the public transport season ticket is valid also for boats, besides trams and buses! Time runs very fast in Sweden and I learn soon what the examination period looks like. Once again I am quite surprised by the rather peculiar behaviour of Swedish students. All examinations are written and take 4 to 6 hours. The typical examination equipment of a student includes a chocolate bar, a Coca Cola and comfortable clothes – jogging trousers are nothing exceptional. As soon as I pass my last exam, my study period in Sweden finishes and I leave the country convinced that I have done a good job and enjoyed unforgettable experience. I am happy to live in a period in which our own will is the only obstacle to travelling. It is just up to us to decide to pack our suitcase and explore the world. Zuzana Virglerová: I learned to take things easy thanks to Erasmus. I chose the small Italian town of Trento, nestled in the foothills of the Dolomites close to Lago di Garda, as my study abroad destination. At the beginning I had to deal with a lot of administrative stuff. I received much help from Dr. Pálka, Vice-Dean for International Relations at our Faculty, to whom I am very grateful. I found accommodation by myself before leaving for Italy; thanks to an advertisement posted on an Italian server
and thanks to a Chinese student I managed to arrange accommodation in a private apartment. I received a friendly welcome at the university and my Italian supervisor, who was born in Great Britain, was always very supportive and helpful. But sometimes it was a real struggle – struggle with the language, struggle with the statistics, struggle with a different teaching and learning style. I even had to join his students and attend his seminars every week. As life is not just about work, I also made many friends in Italy. I received much support from other PhD students; they were always incredibly willing to help. Besides working on my dissertation thesis, I also attended a language school where I studied Italian. I met several international students there, thanks to whom I learned much about different cultures, customs, as well as many different kinds of ”English”. Italy is an amazing country; local people are happy and nice; they speak with an incredibly cheerful tone and their language is contagious. Thanks to this country and the Erasmus programme I learned to stay calm and take things easy, improved my English and Italian skills and my life took a different direction. I have visited my friends in Italy twice since I returned in December 2012 and I would love to get there as long as possible. If I had to decide again whether to go there or not, I would not hesitate. Erasmus would be the only right choice for me. Allora! Zuzana Virglerová, Faculty of Management and Economics

Pár jejích postřehů nyní otiskujeme i v časopise.
Možná přijede do Zlína.“
Notes from California Among schools which our students can join, thanks to their study at TBU, a number of prestigious institutions can be named which are on the top level in their specialization. One of them is the California Institute of the Arts, USA, a university specializing in arts, where Ms. Zuzana Bahulová, a PhD student in the degree course in Multimedia and Design, is spending the winter semester. Only the best succeed in getting a place at this university founded by Walt Disney, the greatest animation guru of all time. That’s the reason why Zuzana does not keep the experiences gained during her studies only to herself but shares them with other people via the TBU Facebook page. Here we publish a few of her observations. “It’s not so easy to travel halfway around the world, even though I am used to travelling. Actually, this was way more exhausting than I had expected. I had a big problem with the jet lag (-9 h), but I was able to manage somehow :).

Afterwards, another problem occurred, and that with other students: It looks like the only thing they do is either work hard or play videogames to relax :). They are unbelievably talented! 98% of my fellow students come from Asia – so that among them I am the tall blonde and also about 4 years older :) But, thanks to my looks, I became easily recognizable to everyone very quickly. (…) All my fellow students try to help each other and are very nice to each other. Of course, that’s the American mentality, but there is one more thing to it: Everybody knows that most of our fellow students will be successful and, in future, they can help you to find a better job. And another interesting fact: During the day, with temperatures around 30° C, the air conditioning in the school runs at full power. That’s why students have been wearing sweaters and caps combined e.g. with flipflops since September :-)
(…) When I started my studies here, I set myself the goal that I wanted my drawing to be selected and posted on the board in the main corridor. I told myself that when I have achieved this goal, I could go home. That means that I could go home right now, immediately after fulfilling the second task – my drawing is there already!!! I have an amazing supervisor here. He is an elderly gentleman, very wise and well-liked by everyone. What I appreciate about him the most is that each Friday he finds time for a lengthy discussion with me. (…) A few weeks ago we had a wonderful evening: Jim Capobinco from Pixar was lecturing on works by Karel Zeman. At the end of the lecture he asked us whether there was somebody who knew Karel Zeman. You can probably imagine his reaction after he found out that I had been studying animation in Zlín: he was excited, I was excited… Since then we have been writing to each other. Maybe he will come to Zlín.”
