Transportation in Indonesia   As the world’s largest archipelago country, Indonesia needs a distinctive transportation system  to sustain the mobility of the people within this country. It consists of more than 17.000 islands with 5  main big islands, so all transport modes in the country’s transport system are generally complementary  in  the  air,  land,  and  sea  or  water.  Therefore,  massive  transportation  infrastructure  has  been  built  all  over  this  country  so  that  people  can  easily  hoping  around  in  this  archipelago.  The  most  developed  transportation  system  is  available  in  Java,  since  the  population  of  the  country  is  concentrated  in  this  island. Thousands of kilometers or roads, bridges, railway networks, international airports and harbours  have  been  built  in  Java.  To  support  the  economic  development  of  the  country,  numbers  of  transportation  infrastructure  also  have  been  built  in  other  main  islands,  namely  Sumatera,  Bali,  Kalimantan,  Sulawesi,  and  Papua.  Though  in  many  remote  islands,  still  has  many  under  developed  infrastructure, but it surely will bring you unforgetable experience with many stunning moments during  the  trip.  Undoubtedly,  transportation  in  Indonesia  is  another  part  of  adventure  for  your  visit  in  this  dangerously beautiful country.

Bus Buses are the main transportation means for Indonesian. At any time of the day, thousands of  buses in all shapes and sizes move thousands of people throughout Indonesia. There are many kinds of  buses which offer variety of comfortness and prices, all suits to your budget and pleasure. Since many  Indonesian use this bus oftenly, this is undoubtedly the best way if you want to meet and socialise with  locals.   Information about bus transportation is limited on the internet. The easiest way is going to the  nearby Bus Terminal and asking people there about your destination and the costs. Every city, town, and  village usually has their own local Bus Terminal, so finding it would not be a problem.      

  For short distance, there is local bus or commonly called bus kota (city bus). It usually charge the  similar price for any distance, long or short. Usually, they put the route of the bus at front of the vehicle.  You don’t need to go to the bus stop to catch this bus. You just need flagged down off the street with a  wave of your hand, in anywhere you want, as long as the street is at the route of the bus.  Most  city  bus  is  not  equiped  with  Air  Conditioner,  but  in  several  big  cities  now  has  been  developed  new kind of city bus that  provide convenience, Air Conditioned and cheap price as modest  transportation in the city, such as TransJakarta (Bus Way) in Jakarta, TransJogja in Yogyakarta, Damri bus  in Solo and Semarang, etc.   

Train Train is one of the most comfortable and easiest ways to travel, especially in Java. The train is  divided  into  3  different  class,  according  to  the  convenience,  the  price,  and  the  time  you  spent  on  the  way. The best and most convenient one is Excecutive class, the medium one is Bussiness class, and the  last  one  is  Economic  class,  cheap  but  less  convenient.  You  can  choose  whatever  according  to  your  preference.  If  you  want  to  see  and  socialize  with  the  common  Indonesian  people,  the  economic  class  train is the best was possible. But if want to feel some confort during your trip, the executive class might  become your choice.   The railway service connects with the ferry to Bali in the east, and the ferry to Sumatra in the  west. There are 2 main railways in Java, the nothern and southern route, which connect the big cities  and some famous tourist destination in Java. You can see it on the map below.

also  in  post  office,  but  it  will  take  more  time  since  you  need  to  transfer  the  money,  get  the  booking  code,  and  still  have  to  print  the  ticket  in  the  train  station.  Now,  ticket  reservation  is  also  available  in  some major travel tour operator spread all over Indonesia, with extra charges, but you can get the ticket  already.  For  this  kind  of  reservation,  you  can  only  book  the  ticket  at  maximum  30  days  until  3  hours  before the departure time of the train.  Or  you  can  go  directly  to  the  train  station  and  buy  the  ticket  there,  where  you  can  also  find  information about the train schedule and destination. If you buy the ticket few hours or just before the  departure time, you need to buy the ticket directly in the train station.

Becak Becak is one of the three‐wheel mode of transportation that generally  found  in  Indonesia,  it  is  also  found  in  some  of  part  of  Asia.  Becak  fit  two  passengers comfortably and possibly even more, depending on the size of the  passenger. In Indonesia, there are to kind of becak, the one with the driver on  the back and the driver on the side. The first kind is commonly found in Java  and the second in Sumatera.   Becak  in  Java  usually  have  some  protection from the sun, and a plastic sheet that comes down over the  front helps protect passengers during rainstorms. It is highly suggested  to bargain before you get in.     

   

Andong/Delman/Bendi/Cidomo All this type of vehicle is a kind of horse drawn carriage. The name difference simply because the  way  local  people  call  them.  For  example  in  Yogyakarta  or  cities  in  Central  Java,  people  call  it  Andong,  usually  only  for  tourist  with  the  coachman/horseman  wearing  traditional  javanese  suit  with  his  bright  and colorful cart. Andong usually has 4 wheels, Bendi and Delman have 2 wheels. In Lombok or around  Gili Islands, the same kind of horse drawn carriage called Cidomo, become the prefered transportation  means  on  this  remote  and  solitude  archipelago,  where  not  many  modern  transportation.  Tourist  and  local people use it for longer distance trip within the island.    

Bajaj A  bright  orange  and  noisy  vehicle,  it  is  only  available  in  Jakarta.  These  traditional  transportation  vehicles became popular in India and later imported to  and  built  in  Indonesia.  Bajaj  seat  two  passengers  comfortably  and  up  to  five  passengers,  depending  on  the size of the passenger of course. Fare determination  is  by  bargaining.  It's  always  best  to  ask  an  Indonesian  what  they  would  pay  for  a  trip  to  a  particular  destination  from  your  point  of  departure,  and  then  bargain and pay accordingly.     

 

Angkot Angkot  stands  for  Angkutan  Kota  (City  Transportation)  are  smaller  vans/mini‐buses  that  serve  set  routes  on  smaller  main  roads.  They  seat  9‐12  people, depending on the type. The beginning and end  points of the routes are visible on the front and back of  each  bus,  along  with  a  route  number.  The  fare  determination depends on the distance of the trip; the  longer,  the  more  expensive,  though  the  difference  probably only 1000 or 2000 rupiah (about 10 cent in US  dollar) from their normal fare.  

Taxis Like many other place in the world, taxi is the more convinience way for doing a trip, especially  inside  the  city.  Taxis  can  be  found  in  pangkalan  (taxi  queues)  at  city  center,  around  famous  toursim  spots, malls and hotels, or flagged down off the street with a wave of your hand. Alternatively, you can  phone the taxi company and they will send a taxi to your place. This is usually not as quick as flagging  one  down  off  the  street,  but  if  you  are  willing  to  wait,  you  can  be  assured  of  getting  a  taxi  from  a  reputable  company.  Determine  which  taxi  company  has  its  “pool”  closest  to  your  point  of  departure. You'll probably get a taxi  much quicker  from them.    

Motorbike Motorbike  probably  is  the  most  popular  private  vehicle  of  Indonesian  people.  And  for  tourist,  you’ll  find  that  motorcycles  are  readily  available  for  hire  throughout  Indonesia.  In  the  tourist  centres  they  can  be  rented  from  around  30,000Rp  per  day,  but  in  most  places  the  locals  rent  out  their  own  motorcycles. Rental charges vary with the type of bike and the length of hire. The longer the hire period, 

  the  lower  the  rate,  the  bigger  or  newer  the  bike,  the  higher  the  rate.  And  automatic  motorbike  charge  more  rate than motorcycles with gears. Motorcycles are almost  all between 90cc and 125cc, with 100cc the average size.  You really don’t need anything bigger since the distances  are short and the roads are rarely suitable for fast speeds.  You need to have a licence, though you will rarely need to  show  it.  And  you  can  drive  in  Indonesia  on  an  international driver's license.   

Car The price of car rental will vary according to both location and vehicle. Indonesia has regular car‐ rental agencies in the large cities such as major cities in Java (Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Yogyakarta,  etc), where a rental costs around US$100 per day. It's generally cheaper to hire a car and driver for Rp  350.000 ‐ Rp 500.000 per day. In most cases, the price includes unlimited mileage, but you supply the  petrol.  If  you  are  group  travelers  in  Java,  renting  a  minibus  can  be  a  particularly  good  deal.  The  minibuses are comfortable, are go‐almost‐anywhere vehicles, and can take up to six people plus luggage  in comfort. Car or minibus rental, including driver but excluding petrol, costs Rp 450.000‐Rp 700.000 per  12 hours. To get more information about renting cars in Yogyakarta or around Central Java area you may  check

Boats Speed Boats  Speed boat transportation is usually provided by private company. The service normally is only  available  in  the  place  with  many  tourists,  such  as  Bali  or  Jakarta.  Usually,  they  also  have  website  that  provide information about the tariff, routes, and schedule. So finding more information about it would  not be a problem, just search on the internet.  For  example,  from  Bali  to  Lombok,  there  is  several  speed  boats  connected  the  islands.  Companies offer ferry transportation service Bali‐Lombok:  1. Blue Water Safaris  A  luxury  speedboat  service.  Blue  Water  Express  now  has  three  units  of  fast  boat.  The  BWE  I,  BWE II, and BWE III, a 13.5m, 24‐seat passenger vessel, custom designed to serve the route from Bali to  the Gili Islands and Lombok, as well as Teluk Kodek Lombok. Approx 2 hours from Benoa (Bali) to Gilis.  2. Gili Cat (Fast Catamaran)  Daily departures from Padang Bay (East Bali) to Gili Islands, takes about two and a half hours to  Gili Trawangan, as well as Teluk Kodek Lombok. It's a Fast Catamaran.   3. Mahi Mahi (Fast Catamaran)  Daily departures from Serangan (Sanur ‐ Bali) directly to Gili Islands.   4. Eka Jaya Fast Boat  Eka Jaya fast Boat is one of the fast boat operated between Bali to Gili Islands and Lombok, With  all international standard of safety, provide a reliable services from Bali to Gili Trawangan Lombok with  the shortest possible sea crossing approximately 60 minutes. Departs daily from Padang Bai Bali, arrive  in Gili Trawangan and Teluk Kodek.     

 

Wooden Boats  In the remote place or islands that far from modern facilities, the way to get there and around  the  area  is  by  wooden  boats.  It’s  available  in  local  small  port.  Usually  local  people  will  provide  the  service with their wooden boats. The fare will vary depends on the duration of the trip and the distance.  The best way to get little insight about the fare is by asking local people and pay accordingly. It surely  will bring memorable experience on your trip exploring this archipelago.
