BIOPHYSICS, BIOCHEMISTRY AND ECOPHYSIOLOGY OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS MAIN ACTIVITY The research focuses on the examination of impact of significant environmental factors (radiation and its spectral composition, temperature, CO₂ concentration, and other climate change manifestations) on the photosynthetic apparatus of higher plants, from adjustment mechanisms of the light utilization, to the photosynthetic activity response at the level of leaves, plants, and partly the whole plant canopy as well. Experimental research is especially based on the application of biophysical methods of optical spectroscopy to examine the structure and functional state of the assimilatory apparatus, and the development of biochemical methods to analyse components of the assimilatory apparatus including biologically active substances. Model experiments are conducted with plants grown under precisely defined microclimatic conditions in growth chambers at our worksite. Field research is predominantly carried out at the Experimental Ecological Research Site of the Global Change Research Centre of the AS CR at Bílý Kříž in the mountains of Moravskoslezské Beskydy (in model stands of Norway spruce and common beech cultivated under double and ambient CO₂ concentrations, in Norway spruce monoculture and experimental meadows). POLITICAL AND CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY MAIN ACTIVITY The Centre for Political and Cultural Geography (CPCG) is a multidisciplinary research centre drawing together researchers from political geography, political science, international relations and anthropology who share an interest in the role of space in the construction and reproduction of the social world, politics and everyday life. The research activities and the regional foci of the members of the Centre are diverse, nevertheless they share critical paradigmatic and methodological outlooks which could be summarized as new approaches in political and cultural geography, namely critical geopolitics, poststructuralism, neomarxism and discursive and narrative analysis. The principal research topics include geopolitical and geographic imaginations, environmental perception, landscape, theory of ethnicity and nationalism, geography of everyday life, democratization and new forms of statehood, globalization, humanitarian aid and development, and the visualization of geographical data. The regional interests include the post-Soviet space (the Caucasus in Particular), the Near East, Central Europe, and Latin America. HEAD: Prof. RNDr. Vladimír Baar, CSc. E-MAIL:

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL HISTORY MAIN ACTIVITY In relation to the main research activity of the Centre for Economic and Social History (CESH), which is the study of the historical process of modernisation, the CESH staff have formed six specialised research teams. Their task is to study the trends of modernisation within the relevant segment in order to create a well-structured and complex overview of the modernisation process with emphasis on its developmental nuances. The actual research core represents the economic and social history of the 18th and 19th century, however, with the necessary overlap with the preceding and subsequent periods. The achieved results are presented by the individual members of research teams at international as well as national conferences and CESH is their frequent co-organiser. Moreover, the individual team members are prolific in publication activities. Besides the journal “Historica. Review in History and Related Sciences” (http://katedry.osu.cz/khi/ historica/, the articles or studies appear in several other national and international periodicals (http:// www.hiu.cas.cz/cs/nakladatelstvi/periodika/hospodarske-dejiny.ep/). On a regular basis, the Centre for Economic and Social History publishes monographs devoted to specific issues which have been subject to research (http://ff.osu.cz/chd/index.php?kategorie=35107). • Participation in Cross-Border/Regional and Bilateral Cooperation The major national partner of the Centre for Economic and Social History within intra-university cooperation is the Institute of Economic and Social History of the Philosophical Faculty, Charles University in Prague. Even the cooperation with the Institute of Czech History and the Institute of Wold History of the same University as well as the Historical Institute of the Masaryk University in Brno can be considered abovestandard. Beyond the academic environment, cooperation has been growing successfully especially with the Historical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (AS CR) in Prague and Brno, the Committee for Historical and Social Demography of the Sociological Institute of AS CR in Prague, the Archive of the Ostrava City, the Provincial Archive in Opava, the Moravian Provincial Archive in Brno, the Silesian Provincial Museum in Opava and the Museum of the Těšín Region in Český Těšín. Regarding foreign academic and scientific organisations, the partnership with the History Department of the Faculty of Humanities, Matej Bel University in Bánska Bystrica, Slovakia, has the longest tradition. In addition, the cooperation with the Instytute Historii Wydziału Nauk Społecznych Uniwersytetu Sląskiego in Katowice, Poland, is increasing continually. As early as before the easing of political and social tensions in the late 1980s, partnership originated with the Institut für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte of the Universität Wien, and the Institut für Wirschafts- und Sozialgeschichte of the Universität Köln. In recent years, intensive cooperation has been established with other foreign institutions, namely with Instytut Historii Wydziału Humanistycznego Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego in the Polish Zielona Góra and the Instytut Historii Wydziału Filologiczno-Historycznego Akademii im. Jana Długosza in the Polish Częstochowa.

RESEARCH ON EDUCATION WITH THE SUPPORT OF ICT MAIN ACTIVITY / TEAMS I. ADAPTIVITY IN EDUCATION HEAD: Ing. Kateřina Kostolányová, Ph.D. TEAM MEMBERS: Doc. RNDr. Jana Kapounová, CSc., Doc. RNDr. Jana Šarmanová, CSc., Ing. Lukáš Zoubek, Ph.D. The basic motivation for applying adaptivity in education is to increase the effectivity and quality of information provided to students while respecting their differences (knowledge, personal qualities and characteristics). During the education process, different students have different needs, characteristics and previous knowledge, which requires different provisioning of information. The aim of adaptive education systems is to create an education environment in accordance with the requirements and preferences of the student. II. EVALUATION AND DIAGNOSTICS IN EDUCATION HEAD: RNDr. Martin Malčík, Ph.D. TEAM MEMBERS: Doc. PhDr. Josef Malach, CSc., RNDr. Radek Krpec, Ph.D., Ing. Michal Burda, Ph.D., PhDr. Zuzana Sikorová, Ph.D., Prof. RNDr. Erika Mechlová, CSc., Mgr. Alena Seberová, Ph.D., PhDr. Tereza Kimplová, Ph.D., PhDr. Radim Badošek, Ph.D., PaedDr. Tomáš Bouda SPECIALIZATION: Evaluation of all aspects of education reality plays a key role in the processes of improving school quality and responsibility. Effective diagnostics of pupils with the aid of ICT enables the fulfilling of a series of important diagnostic functions; this research focuses mainly on acquiring feedback as an education regulator important for managing the teaching and learning of students. Evaluation in a broader context is fed with data gathered from individual diagnostic tools, which have a theoretical basis in current educometry and educational assessment. III. FORMAL REPRESENTATION OF KNOWLEDGE IN EDUCATION HEAD: Prof. RNDr. Alena Lukasová, CSc. TEAM MEMBERS: RNDr. PaedDr. Hashim Habiballa, Ph.D, Ph.D., Ing. Zdeňka Telnarová, Ph.D., Mgr. Marek Vajgl, Ph.D., Mgr. Rostislav Miarka, RNDr. Martin Malčík, Ph.D. SPECIALIZATION: Formal representation of knowledge is a key aim of the semantic web that is based on processing the syntax as well as semantics of knowledge. Rapid development of new linguistic tools for modelling upon web sources is taking place on a conceptual level as well as on the level of creating applications based on their meanings and for individual interest domains. General and specialised ontologies are being created as generally shared lexicons of terms. Formal methods of automated deductions within knowledge bases of the RDF model are being developed. The ontologies are created manually, or by machine agents and the key research question is the hierarchy of these ontologies and automation of their creation and usability within the world of the semantic web.

IV. LEARNING OBJECTS AND COMPUTER AIDED EXPERIMENTS HEAD: Doc. PaedDr. Jana Škrabánková, Ph.D. TEAM MEMBERS: Prof. RNDr. Erika Mechlová, CSc., RNDr. Libor Koníček, Ph.D., PaedDr. Svatava Kubicová, CSc., Doc. PaedDr. Dana Kričfaluši, CSc., RNDr. Libuše Švecová, Ph.D. SPECIALIZATION: In the time when education is constantly being more impacted by information and communication technologies, it is important to look for and measure the effectivity of using learning objects (including computer games) in the education process. Computer aided real experiments are the counterbalance to the virtual environment, into which many contemporary pupils depart with diminishing links to reality, real life. The use and methodically suitable involvement of real experiments in education is necessary for developing the learning of pupils in natural-sciences and mathematics, but also for the development of the necessary personality skills.

HUMAN MOTION DIAGNOSTIC CENTR MAIN ACTIVITY The Human Motion Diagnostic Centre is concerned with the collection of information in order to manage the process of motion quality improvement, and physical performance and activities in kinanthropology. It studies the functional and structural relations between motion and health. Moreover, the research centre searches for causes of injury in physical exercise and pronounces subsequent recommendations to prevent their reoccurrence. It offers quality enhancement of human motion diagnostics for rehabilitation and orthopaedic purposes. In the first place, the Human Motion Diagnostics Centre serves the general public engaged in sport (recreational, performance and top performance) or individuals with musculoskeletal system disabilities. The research activities deal with biomechanics of basic human motions, biomechanics of sport and physical exercise. We create biomechanical models which assess the kinematics and kinetics of the individual body segments and, subsequently, also of human body structures. Nowadays, we solve, for example, such issues as the biomechanics of pathological running in people after Achilles tendon surgery, biomechanical risk factors for knee injury in volleyball, biomechanics of walking in people with a bionic knee after transfemoral amputation, the kinematics of vaults in gymnastics, load optimisation in strength exercise, and others. Physiological research investigates the quality and magnitude of body response and adaptation to exercise in humans. Performance, cardiorespiratory, autonomic and biochemical variables are especially considered in the body response and adaptation description. The impact of exercise training manipulation on sport performance is also the important area of our research activities. Recent work in our laboratory has focused on two main areas: (1) the differences between continuous and intermittent exercise from the points of view mentioned above, and (2) the use of heart rate variability in the field of sport training. The functional anthropological research studies the impact of somatic parameters on sports performance in selected sports events, and it also deals with method standardisation for body composition measurement. In the area of physical activities, the focus now lies on standardisation of motion measurement methods. HEAD: Mgr. Daniel Jandačka, Ph.D. E-MAIL:
