The Fall Issue is done. Summer is coming to an end and we had great activities this season with the club. We missed sometimes “you” at one of the events, but lots of people showed up and had a great time. The newest event was the Belgian Beer and Breughel Fest in Blue Bell hosted by Yves Decadt and Kathleen Huyghebaert who had great sponsorship from Duvel and Belgian chocolate. There were many different Belgian Beers to sample. Even the experienced beer connoisseurs tried some new ones from Belgian. People brought lots of Belgian food so no one was drinking with an empty stomach. We hope that we can continue a Belgian theme event next year. Look inside for a photo reportage from this event by Marta van Zanten. Sicco Popma reported that the golf outing was a big success and more people showed up for this event than last year. Again this event will continue! At the end of the golf day every body rushed to the residence from Bert and Marjo de Jong where we saw European Cup Soccer. Marjo did a great job hosting all the people and supplied us with a BBQ and drinks. Rob Heerkens our new Program Chair and some other volunteers helped to set up the Pool party at Rebecca and Herman Nieuwenhuizen’s house. Rebecca and Herman have hosted the pool party now for several years and their hospitality and organization is greatly appreciated. The new Program Chair Rob liked the Nieuwenhuizen ambiance of the pool party and was impressed. Rob is on top of all the old and new events and is doing a great job juggling being a new DAD and helping the Dutch Club. I hope you have fun reading this Newsletter and I thank the people who provided me with stories and articles. Ron Kroes who is working at the National Liberty Museum supplied a really good informative article about the Museum. Thank you Ron! Please, if you have time go to the Menno Koor Holland who are touring in September in Pennsylvania. See details inside. I need for the Winter issue new articles and stories about and for members. Please don’t wait and think that some body else will write for you. If no news articles are coming to the editor than the Dutch Club has to skip a season. I know that nobody wants that, so don’t wait and start writing.

Menno Koor Holland is touring in Pennsylvania and Virginia in September. A 50-voice choir from the Mennonite Churches in Holland will sing at the Souderton Mennonite Church on Sunday evening, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. The evening worship time will also include choirs from the Salford and Souderton congregations. The Menno Holland Choir will also sing at the Salford Mennonite Church during the 9:00 a.m. morning worship service on September 19. THE NATIONAL LIBERTY MUSEUM: Building Bridges in Historic Philadelphia Bridges play a significant role in both the mission and the layout of the National Liberty Museum in Old City, Philadelphia. Opened in 2000, the museum seeks to bridge the divide between individuals of different races, religions and cultures with eight galleries of unique exhibits and art. Quite literally, the museum also includes a “Bridge of Forgiveness” for young visitors to cross, moving towards the goal of respect for diversity and peaceful cooperation. By Ron Kroes
While situated in the heart of historic Philadelphia, the National Liberty Museum highlights the role and realities of America today. Unlike other historic shrines in Old City, the museum honors more than 2,000 contemporary “Heroes of Liberty” from all nations, faiths and backgrounds. Along with the inspiring stories of these heroic men and women, its eight galleries shed light on immigrants to the United States (“Coming to America”), the role of religion in this nation (“Voyage to Liberty Through Faith”) and the challenges posed to America”s constitution today (“American Century”). The “From Conflict to Harmony” gallery helps young visitors face and overcome violence, leading them from a “Shredder of Mean Words” to life-sized Jellybean People sculptures and finally over the hard-toclimb “Bridge of Forgiveness.” A view of the National Liberty Museum at 321 Chestnut Street in Old City, Philadelphia.

Each gallery, in its own way, seeks to help visitors bridge social, racial and religious divides. “We have much more in common than we realize – more similarities than differences,” says Executive Director Gwen Borowsky. The National Liberty Museum also displays more than 100 pieces of contemporary glass art, to illustrate the fragile qualities of freedom. “We are the only Museum in the world to use glass as a metaphor for freedom,” says Borowsky, “What better way to visualize the fragility and beauty of freedom than to compare it to a piece of glass?” Along with a 20-foot “Flame of Liberty” sculpture by Seattle artist Dale Chihuly – which cuts through two floors of galleries – the Museum features a sixfoot glass and iron “Peace Portal,” a crystal “Golden Egg of Opportunity” and many more works by the world”s leading glass artists.

"Jellybean People, by Sandy Skoglund" - This sculpture of two lifesized children is made entirely of real jellybeans. It reminds young visitors that people are like jellybeans - different colors on the outside but made of 99.9% the same ingredients on the inside. De Brug

"Chess Set, by Gianni Toso" This glass chess set depicts the Pope and Queen Esther. The chess pieces are arranged in positions of communication and conversation, rather than conflict.
A group of schoolchildren visit to 20 foot "Flame of Liberty" sculpture, by artist Dale Chihuly. The sculpture cuts through two floors of exhibits and it the centerpiece of the National Liberty Museum.
The National Liberty Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week through the summer months. Located at 321 Chestnut Street in Old City, the facility is fully wheelchair accessible. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for students and free for children with a chaperone. Guided tours for adults and children are also available. EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP SOCCER Every two years the Dutch –voetbal- fans have an opportunity to enjoy the European Championship or the World Championship games here in the US. I listened to the first game on the internet radio at work. Although the game was not very impressive, a 1-1 score against Germany was not a bad start. The second game against the Czech Republic was on the same day as the NAADV golf tournament. Bert de Jong took the initiative and offered to record the game so all golfers could go after the tournament to watch the game on a big screen at his house. After we finished a great day of golf we all went to Bert and Marjo’s place. Marjo cooked up a great BBQ that we all enjoyed while waiting for everybody to arrive. Erwin van Zanten tried to give everybody hints about the game. Since he had not played the golf tournament he saw the game live via satellite before we arrived. When everybody was finally there we sat down in anticipation of the game. After some technical difficulties we had more technical difficulties. Bert’s CD DVD recorder was not totally “plug and play”. So all we saw was a lot of recorded “snow”. We knew that it was pretty warm in Portugal so we knew it was impossible that the game was played in the snow. After a few more attempts we came to the conclusion that all we recorded was snow and not the game. Fortunately, we had Erwin’s fine personal accounts on how it was one of the best game ever played............. Oh well, we quickly went back to the TV were could see “Studio Sport” wrapping up and show the goals! Nevertheless, we had a great day of Golf with a nice BBQ to top it off. By Sicco Popma
The third game was against Latvia, merely a formality since the Germans had to play Czech Republic that already qualified and probably would not play their best. Therefore the general assumption was that the Dutch team would not make it to the next round. Nevertheless, Guido Geaffke kindly invited a group De Brug

of “fanatics” to watch the game at his place. We made ourselves comfortable on the couch with a beer and some chips in anticipation of the Dutchies last game of the tournament. But something happened; we seemed to have inherited the German’s luck. And guess what, Holland won as expected but, surprisingly, the Germans lost! In other words, we found our lucky couch in front of Guido’s TV. According to a beer commercial, frequently played during Euro2004, such a couch can be crucial for the success of your team! Under the motto of “never change the winning spectator couch” Guido welcomed a slightly bigger crowd for the quarter final game against Sweden. I was even contacted by a desperate Dutchie via the NAADV website. He was invited and made many friends when he showed up with a kilo drop. The game ended up in penalties and as we all know this is usually not the Dutch team’s strongest skill. But we knew we definitely found our “lucky couch” when we ended the series as winners! Unfortunately, Guido was not available to organize the semifinals. The good thing was that I was able to get the game on pay per view and I decided to invite everybody at my place. We even contemplated to move the “lucky couch” from Guido”s house to my place but this seemed a little too superstitious. When the big day was there the group of fans had expanded even further. So much so that people classified as not as “not real fans” (my mother in law) had to leave the TV room to make space for the real fans. I know..... Dutch soccer fans have no mercy. When the game started we quickly realized that we had no chance of winning this game. Maybe it was Erwin’s hat, which I recall did not have the right colors! Or did we miss our lucky couch? All I know we lost 2-1 and this easily could have been worse. Nevertheless we had a great time during all the games we watched together. We should definitely organize something like this again in 2006 during the World Championships. We now know that we will be in good hands with our new head coach Marco van Basten. But “all little bits help” as we say in Holland so, I suggest that the NAADV buys the “Lucky Couch” from Guido in preparation of the 2006 World Championships! 8

EUROPESE KAMPIOENSCHAPPEN IN PHILLY De eerste wedstrijd heb ik op internet gevolgd, radio 1 Nederland – Duitsland, gelijk spel. By Harry Brons De tweede wedstrijd was zaterdags tegen Tsjechie. Die dag speelde ik voor de tweede keer in m’n leven golf. De bedoeling was dat we na afloop van het golven de wedstrijd bij Bert de Jong konden bekijken. Helaas liep het golven wat uit maar gelukkig bleek Bert over opname apparatuur te beschikken. Eenmaal klaar met golf en met de auto op weg naar Brin Mwar werd ik op gebeld dat Nederland verloren had en ik een weddenschap gewonnen had. Bij huise de Jong aangekomen heerste er een bedrukte sfeer; a . omdat Nederland verloren had en b. Omdat de opname mislukt was. Gelukkig heb ik nog Cruijff’s analyse meegekregen alhoewel ik pas merkte hoe fataal de wissel van Advocaat was toen ik las dat zelfs Balkende zich met de voetbal pers was gaan bemoeide. De volgende week wist Nederland zich te kwalificeren voor de tweede ronde door te winnen van Litouwen. Maar daarmee was Nederland er nog niet. De wedstrijd Duitsland en Tsjechie was tegelijker tijd. De Duitser moesten verliezen van Tsjechie anders zou Duitsland zich kwalificeren. Die wedstrijd heb ik ook op radio 1 gevolgd, toen Nederland eenmaal voor stond op Litouwen werd er hoofdzakelijk verslag gedaan hoe goed Tsjechie het wel deed tegen Duitsland. Nederland kon door naar de tweede ronde. Guido bood zich aan om daar de wedstrijd tegen Zweden bij hem te kijken. In de eerste 90 minuten gebeurde er niets, in de verlenging kon zelfs van Hooijdonck er niks van bakken. Strafschoppen, Seedorf werd deze keer overgeslagen en Robben knalde Nederland naar de volgende ronde. Voor Nederland – Portugal stelde Sicco zijn huis open. 1 – 2, Nederland verloor en had in de laatste twee wedstrijden geen enkel goal gemaakt.

POOL PARTY Zaterdag 31 juli was het weer zover — De familie Nieuwenhuizen stelde hun huis, tuin, pool en zelfs biervoorraad (maar hierover later meer) open voor de leden en vrienden van de NAADV.

De terrein inspectie werd dit jaar uitgevoerd door niemand minder dan onze eigen President. Geflankeerd door een ietwat verlate en niet minder kersverse Program Chair werd de pool, het meubilair en elk grassprietje gecontroleerd. Vanzelfsprekend werd ook het bier aan een grondig onderzoek onderworpen. “Alleen het beste voor onze leden” mompelde de President toen hij voor de zekerheid steekproefgewijs een tweede flesje bier aan een kwaliteit onderzoek onderwierp. Maar zelfs het getrainde oog van ons senior management kon geen onvolmaaktheden ontdekken. Rebecca en Herman hadden hun landerijen en bijbehorende infrastructuur in uitstekende staat van onderhoud. Vlekkeloos. Een en ander werd beloond met een vrolijk zonnetje dat zich schoorvoetend door de wolken laag heenworstelde. Het feest kon beginnen!! Stipt op tijd gingen de hekken open maar in geen velden of wegen een badgast te bekennen. Paniek sloeg toe. Zou het kunnen zijn dat er iets met de mailing fout was gegaan of wellicht een ledenopstand tegen het huidige bestuur. De President nam het heft in handen en sommeerde de aanwezige bestuursleden en de gastheer deel te nemen aan een spoed overleg in Herman’s bubbelende Jacuzzi. Een biertje erbij en vergaderen maar. Wat een uitvinding zo’n verwarmd buiten bubbel bad. Uiteindelijk bleek dat de meeste gasten gewoon ietwat verlaat arriveerde. Een en ander had echter wel tot gevolg dat halverwege het feest het bier op was. Gelukkig was Herman niet te beroerd om zijn prive drank voorraad met de badgasten te delen. Het delen van huis, tuin en pool is een teken van uiterste gastvrijheid, maar om je prive drankvoorraad met een bende natte zwembroeken te delen neigt naar altruisme. De Brug

Uiteindelijk kwam het feest lekker op gang en we mochten zelfs nog enkele Nederlandse gasten uit Suriname en een nieuw lid, geintroduceerd door Rob Kuhne, verwelkomen. Het hele gezelschap kreeg wel de schrik van hun leven toen een van de zoontjes van Bert in het zwembad in de problemen kwam. Gelukkig kon Bert zijn zoon tijdig uit het water halen zodat het allemaal met een sisser afliep. Wel een gemiste kans voor de St Bernard van de familie Nieuwenhuizen. Wellicht dat het instinct om mensen te redden alleen in de Alpen werkt. Over de St Bernard gesproken: zou het geen gek idée zijn om bij een volgende poolparty de St Bernard een tonnetje sterke drank om te binden. Zodat de hond getraind wordt in het helpen van gasten in nood. Namens alle badgasten een welverdiende “thank you” aan de familie Nieuwenhuizen voor hun onovertroffen gastvrijheid.

NIEUWS UIT NEDERLAND SURVEY SHOWS DUTCH ARE TALLEST ON PLANET -- AND GETTING HEAVIER AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The Dutch, already the tallest people on the planet, are still growing in height while also packing on the pounds. The market research organization GfK said on Thursday that data collected over the last seven years showed increasing demand for larger clothing sizes in the Netherlands, where the average man is about 6 feet, 1 inch, tall. “The Dutch are growing,” said GfK spokesman Koen Snoeren. The Dutch are nearly four inches taller on average than the British and Americans, and almost six inches taller than they were four decades ago. GfK’s analysis supports recent studies, including one by Professor Robert Fogel for the Pan American Health Organization, that ranks the Dutch as the tallest people on the planet. Fogel and other researchers put it down to affluence, a diet rich in dairy products, and good hygiene and health care. Studies by the Health Council of the Netherlands suggest the Dutch could grow another four inches in the next few decades. But some data, including GfK’s, also suggest junk food is limiting the health advantages that wealth has brought. Nearly half of the population is overweight, and the council says that in a decade it could be two-thirds, around the level of the United States.

“LIEFDE” HET MOOISTE WOORD IN HET NEDERLANDS Een op de acht Nederlanders vindt “liefde” het mooiste woord dat de Nederlandse taal rijk is. Dat blijkt uit een vandaag gepubliceerd onderzoek van TNS NIPO dat onder 996 Nederlanders is uitgevoerd. Na “liefde” volgen “vakantie”, “geluk” en “vrijheid”. Twee procent van de ondervraagden noemde deze woorden. De onderzoeker van TNS NIPO concludeert dat mensen woorden vooral mooi vinden wegens de betekenis en niet zozeer wegens de klank. De ondervraagden moesten spontaan antwoord geven op de vraag welk woord zij het mooiste vonden. Veel woorden werden slechts eenmaal genoemd, maar van een aantal woorden was de frequentie hoger. “Vertrouwen”, “gezellig” en “vrede” waren goed voor een procent. Enkele ondervraagden kozen ervoor een woord te noemen dat zij om de klank het mooiste vonden. Volgens het onderzoeksbureau kwamen onder meer “hottentottententententoonstelling”, “amanuensis”, “draaideurcrimineel”, “rehabilitatie” en “flappentap” enkele keren naar voren. Ook onderzocht TNS NIPO welke woorden Nederlanders het lelijkst vinden. Vloeken, scheldwoorden en schuttingtaal domineren de lijst. Vijf mensen gaven aan “Balkenende” het lelijkste Nederlandse woord te vinden. Een ondervraagde noemde “Bush”. (Bron: Algemeen Dagblad)
