De tentoonstelling The Mystic Gardener is ontstaan in een dialoog tussen museumconservator Paula van den Bosch en privéverzamelaar Maurice van Valen. Het begon eigenlijk als een blind-date, getriggerd door het feit dat zowel Maurice van Valen als de directie van het Bonnefantenmuseum zich geregeld openlijk uitspreken over het belang van goede samenwerking tussen privéverzamelaars en musea en dat het Bonnefanten Hedge House de plek bij uitstek is om in dit verband de daad bij het woord te voegen. Nieuwsgierig naar Van Valens privécollectie en naar de mogelijke aansluiting daarvan op die van het Bonnefantenmuseum, zijn de verzamelaar en de conservator het gesprek aangegaan, resulterend in een conceptueel framework dat vertrekt vanuit de unieke wijze waarop in de Bonnefanten Hedge House Foundation in Wijlre natuur en cultuur harmonieus samengaan. Inhakend op de ‘Hedge House traditie’ van verstilde presentaties, met veel wit en ruimte tussen de werken, is er een selectie kunstenaars van divers pluimage en verschillende generaties uitgerold, waarbij de samen met Maurice van Valen gemaakte keuze uit zijn collectie tevens de keuze van overige werken heeft bepaald. Voor de uiteindelijke tentoonstelling hebben wij daarnaast dankbaar werken in bruikleen genomen van verschillende collecties, waaronder galerie Paul Andriesse, galerie Zack I Branicka, v/h de collectie Jo en Marlies Eyck, de collectie g+w, de collectie ‘Heden’, galerie Supportico Lopez, de collectie Van der Hoeven-van Vliet, de collectie erven Martin Visser. Wij zijn alle betrokkenen zeer erkentelijk voor hun bijdrage in de realisatie van deze bijzondere tentoonstelling.
The exhibition The Mystic Gardener originated from a dialogue between museum curator Paula van den Bosch and private collector Maurice van Valen. It actually started as a blind date, prompted by the fact that both Maurice van Valen and the Bonnefantenmuseum management regularly talk openly about the importance of good collaboration between private collectors and museums, and by the fact that the Bonnefanten Hedge House is the ideal place to put this into practice. Curious about Van Valen’s private collection and about how it could link up with that of the Bonnefantenmuseum, the collector and curator entered into discussion. This resulted in a conceptual framework based on the unique way that nature and culture come together harmoniously in the Bonnefanten Hedge House Foundation in Wijlre. In line with the ‘Hedge House tradition’ of tranquil presentations with a lot of white and space between the works, a selection was made of artists of all different styles and generations, whereby the pieces selected along with Maurice van Valen from his collection also determined which other works were chosen. For the final exhibition, we are also grateful for the loan of works from various collections, including the Paul Andriesse gallery, the Zack I Branicka gallery, the former collection of Jo and Marlies Eyck, the g+w collection, the ‘Heden’ collection, the Supportico Lopez gallery, the Van der Hoevenvan Vliet collection and the collection of the Martin Visser heirs. We are very grateful to all concerned for their contribution to creating this wonderful exhibition.
Waar in Nederland vind je een museale ruimte die tevens dienst doet als orchideeënkas, orangerie en kippenhok? In het Bonnefanten Hedge House maken natuur en cultuur een liefdevolle pas de deux en scharrelen de kippen tevreden rond. De tien kunstenaars in The Mystic Gardener zijn doordrongen van de wereld maar verkennen, schijnbaar stoïcijns, de ondoorgrondelijke aard van kunst en van hun eigen werk in dialoog met de natuur.
Where in the Netherlands do you find a museum space that also serves as an orchid greenhouse, an orangery and a henhouse? In the Bonnefanten Hedge House, nature and culture dance a loving pas de deux and hens scratch around contentedly.The ten artists in The Mystic Gardener are permeated by the world, while investigating the unfathomable nature of art and of their own work in dialogue with nature, with apparent stoicism.
In zijn beroemde Aktion uit 1965 met de jaloers makende titel: ‘Wie man dem Toten Hasen die Bilder erklärt’ (hoe beelden te verklaren aan een dode haas) droeg een met honing en bladgoud bedekte Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) urenlang het karkas van een dode haas in zijn armen, intussen onhoorbaar het beest toefluisterend. Na afloop werd hij geconfronteerd met een spervuur van vragen over de betekenis van deze performance. Beuys, getergd, mompelde toen: ‘zelfs een dood dier heeft meer intuïtieve vermogens dan de gemiddelde mens met zijn koppige ratio’.
In his famous Aktion from 1965, with the enviable title: ‘Wie man dem Toten Hasen die Bilder erklärt’ (how to explain pictures to a dead hare), Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) – covered in honey and gold leaf – carried the carcass of a dead hare around in his arms for hours, while whispering inaudibly to the animal. Afterwards, he was confronted by a barrage of questions about the meaning of this performance. To which the badgered Beuys mumbled, ‘Even a dead animal has more intuitive powers than the average person with his stubborn reason’.
Toegegeven, er is geen dode haas of bladgoud te bekennen in The Mystic Gardener maar je ziet bij de deelnemende kunstenaars een vergelijkbare intuïtieve werkwijze en een algemene hang naar motieven uit de natuur. Toch zoek je tevergeefs naar een arcadisch landschap. De illusie van ‘ongerepte natuur’ is niet wat deze kunstenaars bezighoudt; het is juist de ‘gerepte natuur’ die ze verkennen en ontginnen. Het onderscheid tussen cultuur en natuur lijkt in hun werk opgeschort. Evenals Beuys zien deze kunstenaars mens en natuur niet als gescheiden entiteiten.
Admittedly, there is no sign of a dead hare or gold leaf in The Mystic Gardener, but from the participating artists you do see a similar intuitive way of working and a general penchant for motifs from nature. Yet you will search in vain for an Arcadian landscape. The illusion of ‘unspoilt nature’ is not what interests these artists. It is rather the ‘spoilt nature’ that they explore and develop. The distinction between culture and nature appears to be suspended in their work. Like Beuys, these artists do not see mankind and nature as separate entities.
Kunst hoeft trouwens niet zwaar op de hand of megalomaan-mythisch te zijn om te overtuigen. Sommige werken zijn aangenaam ongerijmd (en geestig), zoals een palmboom die verlangt naar een sexy sneeuwvlok, al is het er maar één. Of een sneeuwpop die droomt van een tropisch paradijs. De Amerikaans-Japanse Yutaka Sone uit Los Angeles ontwierp ook de mobiele sleestudio voor hoog in de bergen zodat hij een sneeuwvlok in de natuur kon vastleggen.
Incidentally, art does not have to be ponderous or megalomaniac-mythical in order to be convincing. Some works are pleasantly absurd (and amusing), like a palm tree that longs for a sexy snowflake, even if it’s only a single one. Or a snowman that dreams of a tropical paradise. The AmericanJapanese artist Yutaka Sone, from Los Angeles, also designed the mobile sledge studio for high in the mountains, so that he could record a snowflake in nature.

Van de categorie ongenaakbaar is een loodzware betonnen plaat getiteld, No, die in een precair evenwicht tegen de wand leunt. Michael Dean bekraste het oppervlak langdurig met munten waardoor de huid op boomschors is gaan lijken. Verderop is zijn Architecture of a mothers arms. Hoor je hier de echo van niet gevoerde gesprekken aan de keukentafel, gegoten in beton? Er zijn werken die iets onweerlegbaars uitstralen, alsof ze er al waren voordat de mens zijn intrede deed. De reeks geplooide doekjes met bladmotief van Antonietta Peeters lijkt een sediment uit lang vervlogen tijden. Of de leisteen van Richard Long, een landgenoot van Michael Dean, die een handafdruk achterliet op een brokstuk, al bespat met vogelpoep. Bij William Leavitt, stadgenoot van Yutaka Sone transformeert alles dan weer in een decor met props. Landschappen, stadsgezichten en het interieur worden op voet van gelijkwaardigheid behandeld en zijn tegelijkertijd real en unreal. Dat geldt voor een eikenblad, straatlicht, systeem plafonds; voor een schilderij, kamerplant, een gordijn… Leavitts devies: ‘Pay attention to everything’. Peter Doig, die opgroeide met de weidse natuur van Canada, etste een modern geklede man die naar zijn voeten staart en kringen maakt op het water. Ongetwijfeld naar een eenvoudige snapshot uit zijn familiealbum. De symbolische werking doet echter niet onder voor de oudtestamentische hooibergen en bomen van Arie Visser (1885–1974), een streng gelovige civiel ingenieur en zondagsschilder: En klagend bogen ze de oude lijven om het uit hun armen weggevloden licht, luidt het bijschrift. Wetenschappelijke ingetogenheid kenmerkt het werk van Irene Kopelman en herman de vries. De Argentijnse Kopelman schetste de ondoordringbare jungle met de methode van de écriture automatique (tekenen alsof je slaapwandelt). De éminence grise, herman de vries verzamelt bladeren, daartoe geïnspireerd door de Chinese religieus-filosofische traditie van het Taoïsme
In the category of inaccessible, there is an extremely heavy concrete block entitled No, which leans precariously balanced against the wall. Michael Dean scratched the surface with coins over a long period, making it look like bark. Further on, there is his Architecture of a mother’s arms. Can you hear the echo here of conversations never held at the kitchen table, cast in concrete? There are works that radiate something incontrovertible, as if they were around before humans made their appearance. The series of pleated cloths with leaf patterns by Antonietta Peeters seem to be a sediment from an era of the distant past. As does the slate by Richard Long, a fellow countryman of Michael Dean, who left a handprint on a fragment that was already spattered with bird droppings. In the case of William Leavitt, a fellow townsman of Yutaka Sone, everything is transformed once more into scenery with props. Landscapes, cityscapes and the interior are all treated on an equal footing, and are real and unreal at the same time. This applies to an oak leaf, street lights and modular ceilings, and to a painting, a houseplant and a curtain. Leavitt’s motto is: ‘Pay attention to everything’. Peter Doig, who grew up with the vast nature of Canada, etched a man in modern clothing staring at his feet and making rings in the water. It is presumably based on a simple snapshot from his family album. The symbolic effect, however, is a match for the Old Testament haystacks and trees of Arie Visser (1885–1974), a strictly religious civil engineer and Sunday painter. The caption reads: En klagend bogen ze de oude lijven om het uit hun armen weggevloden licht (And plaintively they bent their old bodies around the light that had escaped from their arms). Scholarly modesty characterises the work of Irene Kopelman and herman de vries. The Argentinian artist Kopelman sketches

waarin alles als een eenheid wordt gezien. Je schrijft zijn naam daarom zonder hoofdletters, omdat die zouden duiden op hiërarchie. Tot slot maakte de Poolse Agnieszka Polska de gefingeerde documentaire The Garden (te zien in het koetshuis) over een levende legende uit Warschau. Deze Pawel Freisler kondigde een manifesto over ‘de kunst van het samenzweren’ aan. Hij stopte vervolgens met kunst maken, emigreerde naar Zweden om zich daar in grote afzondering aan zijn botanische tuin te wijden. Invloedrijker dan welk kunstobject ook is de onophoudelijke stroom van geruchten die sindsdien zijn persoon en werk omgeven. the impenetrable jungle using the method of écriture automatique (drawing as if you were sleepwalking). The éminence grise herman de vries collects leaves, inspired by the Chinese religious-philosophical tradition of Taoism, in which everything is seen as a unity. His name is written without capital letters, as they would signify hierarchy. And finally, the Polish artist Agnieszka Polska created the staged documentary The Garden (shown in the coach house) about a living legend from Warsaw, Pawel Freisler, who announced a manifesto about ‘the art of conspiracy’. He then stopped creating art and emigrated to Sweden, where he devoted himself to his botanical garden in great seclusion. The constant stream of rumours that have surrounded him and his work ever since have been more influential than any art object. Bonnefanten Hedge House is een duurzaam samenwerkingsverband tussen de Bonnefanten Hedge House Foundation (een non-profit stichting, die voor de exploitatie van het Gesamtkunstwerk kasteel Wijlre aangewezen is op sponsorgelden en fondsen) en het Bonnefantenmuseum, dat de artistieke verantwoordelijkheid draagt voor de programmering van de tentoonstellingen.
