Timber trade Coninbergh =envoethout, being 10 foot planks [± 280 cm] from Kaliningrad, formerly called Königsberg.
The longest planks available on the market were 12 feet [± 340 cm], as was the case with the :mber coming from the main export site in the Bal:c, Gdansk, and as used by Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-‐1640) for his Rise of the Cross in the Antwerp Cathedral.
Karel van Mander (1548-‐1606) was aware of this importa:on of oak coming on ships from the North Sea although he thought it came from Norway. The ships indeed came to the Netherlands from the north, ager having passed the Sound, the Strait which now divides Denmark from Sweden, on their way from the Bal:c. From the Sound-‐Dues records we know, that in 1565 around 85% of the ships carrying wainscots set out from Gdansk.

Guild regula6ons In Antwerp the earliest documents from the guild of St. Luke date back to the last quarter of the fourteenth century, with the first regula:ons da:ng from 1442.
The sculptors used the specialized bakmakers or boxmakers for making the boxes and panels for their retables, but also the joiners were allowed to make panels.
All the different crags dealing with art produc:on, such as the painters, sculptors, lace makers, and instrument makers were in Antwerp organized under the guild of St. Luke. The joiners, however, were not members of the guild of St. Luke, but the panel makers were. Both groups made panels for different purposes.
Also in Germany the quality control was introduced already in the late Gothic period. In Munich the regula:ons in 1424 men:oned that four represent-‐ a:ves from the guild of cabinet makers were to control all panels made by fellow cabinet and panel makers. Any irregulari:es were reported to the head men of the guild and the panel maker accordingly punished.
