hello
Jochem Otten, Head of Education
Man is able to adjust his environment to the needs and wishes of a certain time. This ability results in various outcomes, ranging from decadent to socially extremely relevant and from unfortunate to very tasteful. Our fate is not in the hands of destiny, we ourselves can affect possible scenarios for the future. And this is exactly what studying at Design Academy Eindhoven is all about. Design does not just involve tangible matters. It also tackles issues such as the organization of health care or the routing at Schiphol Airport. Design is not merely a matter of aesthetics. On the contrary. A designer searches for the right concept within a given context. This implies keeping a close eye on what happens around you. What does it teach you? What do your head, heart and intuition tell you? Can you use a different approach or an experiment to reach a revolutionary solution? Studying at Design Academy Eindhoven means getting some hard work done, developing your own methods, finding out where your strength lies. The academy will guide you through this process and challenge you to build on your talents and develop your personality until you are an authentic and professional designer. This magazine takes you along on a journey through our academy; from application to graduation and job perspectives. The world around us is always moving, always in flux. It is crucial for a designer to anticipate adequately, to respond, to protest, and sometimes to initiate change. This is why Design Academy Eindhoven is always progressing. In all probability, the school will have taken yet another step in its evolution when you start your studies here. This pioneering role and the quality of the education offered at the academy have not gone unnoticed. Over the last decades, Design Academy Eindhoven has brought forth leading designers such as Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius, Maarten Baas and Job Smeets. The academy is considered one of the most prominent design institutes in the world. At the opening of the Graduation Show 2008, the then Minister Plasterk announced that Design Academy Eindhoven was to receive an additional million Euros per year for the next four years. The funds are intended for the further elaboration of the international excellence of our academy. The academy is grateful for the recognition. But we can never stop emphasizing that we are a ‘normal’ educational institute, where students are entitled to a scholarship and where you can apply with a Dutch HAVO, VWO or MBO-4-diploma or a foreign equivalent. So do not let anything stop you, and take this chance to earn your spot in this special school, if you believe your future lies here. It is a truly great place, almost like an island, where students from currently 62 different countries come together to design small pieces of a new world.

Within Atelier our focus is on learning to think on your feet. Atelier asks students to give more thought to their process and development, and to develop an awareness of their intuition, uniqueness, and authenticity. By getting to know their personal qualities and developing their intuition, students can start using them as a force in their work process. This will set off a process of wonderment from the individual perspective of each student. A process which, starting out from observation, centres on creating, working with your hands and using your sensitivity in a search for new meanings of material, form, skills, and context. HEAD: BERNARDINE WALRECHT
Forum is the Compass direction which places design and the profession of designing in a cultural and social context. Which social and cultural developments have an impact on the things designers make and do? Forum enables designers to carry out their profession with an understanding of context and teaches them to base their approach on research and reflection. Forum considers it its most important task to understand and explain the times we live in; to determine the position of design and the role of the designer in our culture and society. Forum students mostly tend to work in process guidance, strategy development and scenario writing rather than actually designing products. They work in a very extensive field and can be of use wherever a creative mind is needed. HEAD: NICOLINE DORSMAN
In the Bachelor department, the Compass serves as every student’s basic program. It has been set up around the eight design departments and contains the four directions Atelier, Forum, Lab and Market. Each of these directions takes into consideration the designer and the meaning of design in society from its own perspective. Boasting different accents and orientations, they form a basic well of knowledge and skills, a breeding ground allowing the future designer to constantly develop his or her talent. Together, the range of different focuses and goals of the four Compass directions provide a complete professional framework.
The Compass is not centred on the design process itself, but rather on the knowledge, skills and insights needed in the process. Moreover, it is based on an approach, an attitude. During the first two years at the academy, students will attend a compulsory program. In the third year, students will specialize and choose one of the four directions.
lab
market
Lab is the academy’s laboratory. This is where students conduct their methodical research and where they can perform in-depth experiments. Lab teaches students abstract thinking and encourages an analytical approach. Students perform experiments using their personal research method, which can be scientific as well as intuitive, but which is always recorded to ensure it can be reapplied. They test new materials and techniques; technology is stripped of its mystique. Lab students enjoy pushing the limits and looking beyond the familiar. The focus in Lab is on the interaction between the maker, the product and the user. temporary HEAD: BERNARDINE WALRECHT
Market is the department for the entrepreneurial designer. The focus here is on the new demands in 21st century markets: transparency, health, connectivity, meaningfulness, sustainability, honesty, quality, and originality. Within Market we enable students to develop their personal talent into a professional content. In other words: what are you good at, and what will you have to offer when you finish here? Learning to make confident presentations, knowing what your design is worth, being able to explain why investing in your idea is worthwhile, exploring the globalising world and the significance this has for things such as production. All these aspects are tackled during Market classes. Students specialising in Market will have a more economic and entrepreneurial approach to the design profession. They will be outgoing and will have a keen eye for people’s needs and desires or the demands in the market in a more general sense. They are relatively quick at establishing relationships between commissioners and their own professional identity, which allows them to determine their own position in relation to the markets.

LEISURE COMMUNICATION MOBILITY IDENTITY WELL BEING PUBLIC SPACE ACTIVITY LIVING After your first year at Design Academy Eindhoven, you will choose one of the eight design departments. Each department is headed by a designer or artist of international repute. The design modules of the departments confront you, the student, with realistic design issues. This is the ultimate test: are you capable of making the connection between the knowledge, skills and insights you obtained from the Compass directions, and are you able to adequately put them into practice when creating a professional design? The teaching teams of the design departments will guide you through this process and will stimulate the development of your personal designing method. Eventually, you will graduate in one of the eight design departments. Classes are taught by professional designers from the Netherlands and abroad. They only teach one day a week, and spend the rest of their workweek in the everyday practice of the design industry. A balance which guarantees a continuous and up-to-date connection between design reality and your classes. The names of the eight design departments refer to the context from which these departments consider designing issues. People demand different qualities from products and services in different contexts. Think of a chair in a public space in people’s spare time, or a chair in a work situation. The thing the design departments share, however, is that the central focus is always mankind. In the following paragraphs, you will find a short explanation on each of the design departments.

How do we fill in and give meaning to our most personal time? Could we do it better, cleaner, more interestingly, more beautifully, more sensibly? Our ‘Man and Leisure’ department takes an unprejudiced and interested look into people’s leisure time. As a Leisure student, you are well aware of the changing world around you and your future role in it as a designer. You have a sense of product and service, as well as of complete systems. By analysing the things people take for granted, you are able to create new patterns. Every semester will deal with a new theme, which we will look into by trial-and-error. Because in order to find solutions, you must start by understanding the problems and the way they relate to each other. head: Irene Droogleever Fortuyn Alumni: Ingrid Brandth, Maarten Kolk, Simone Kroon, David Luxembourg
The Netherlands is fighting the muskrat with all its might. Eefje Sandmann has spotted opportunities for ‘eco-friendly’ fur: the animals are killed anyway, and using their fur could save thousands of mink lives. She has used the fur from four tanned muskrats to create a pair of warm mittens.
man and
Tim’s life hardly extends beyond his room. Its four walls form the boundaries within which he tries to create as much of a perspective as he can. In the 96-page graphic novel Binnenskamers Tim leaves all conventions in comic books or novels behind him to create a touching, surrealistic book about the life of a frightened boy in his own liberated imagery.”
The ‘Man and Communication’ program is designed to provide students with a broad and holistic literacy in visual communication. Participants are encouraged to employ visual communication as a mode of discourse and a means of developing a personal, social and/or cultural identity. The course reflects the multidisciplinary and ever-changing nature of contemporary communications by covering 2D + 3D design, graphic design, illustration, moving-image and new media. In addition, there are left-field excursions into cultural anthropology and even performance to stimulate new and innovative ways in which information can be effectively and imaginatively applied, organized, packaged and distributed. The pivotal concern in all projects is content and messaging: “What’s it saying?” is the most commonly used phrase in the department. Graduates from the ‘Man and Communication’ department are likely to work in the fields of graphic-design, advertising, web-design, illustration, animation, game-development or as autonomous creatives with a job-description that doesn’t yet exist. head: Garech and Declan Stone Alumni: Simon Heijdens, Gijs Huygen, David schocken, Nynke tynagel, jeroen wijering

In the future we will be more mobile than ever before and the appliances we use to make our lives more comfortable will have to be equally adaptable. Ultrasphere is a washing machine that is so compact in size that it can be taken anywhere. Place it an a watertight bag with your dirty linens. Ultrasphere then uses ultrasound to create millions of tiny air bubbles in the water that will dissolve any stains. ?

The ‘Man and Mobility’ department studies creative solutions for products and services related to the mobility of people, goods, and data. You will conduct research into the opportunities that can be realised thanks to our mobile society and the current and future state of technology. Mobility is your source of inspiration for creating innovative concepts for people. As a Man and Mobility student you will be faced with a range of stimulating assignments offering you endless possibilities to develop innovative mobility concepts. Recent assignments in this field have included: unplugging electrical appliances or creative ideas for vertical mobility. On the other hand, the department also closely collaborates with businesses such as Air France/KLM to set up new on-board services or concepts for the airport of the future, or with the Catharina hospital in Eindhoven in order to scrutinise its essential mobility structures. You understand the language of the industry, both on a technical and a commercial level, and are able to communicate as the industry does. You have a grasp of materials and production techniques and are always looking for the right balance between the emotional and the rational sides.

Functional, decorative panels for public spaces. Niek Pulles has drawn inspiration from the noisereducing function of classical tapestries and the shape of classical (door)frames in old mansions. His panels are made of pyramid foam, a material that will absorb sound. With Architectural Acoustics he has shaped them into industrial patterns that can combine to cover a wall.
As an Identity student you possess ‘antennae’ for signs of activity beneath the surface of everyday life. You are curious about the newness in the world around you, and you learn to spot those influences that will affect impact the tastes and styles of tomorrow. You can sense the way people will want to live in the future and you are able to visualise the shapes and materials needed to achieve it. You have a natural feel for what is in, what is unique and what is outrageous. Where will you, the ‘Man and Identity’ student, end up as a professional? You will for example become involved in projects at the outset, helping to develop brand strategies and to determine image, style and mood. As a trend forecaster, you will inspire and support other designers and manufacturers in the fields of fashion and interiors. Special areas of interest are colours, materials, patterns and accessories. In the final stages of the design process, ‘Man and Identity’ designers help craft the image of a product. Styling, photography, film and visual merchandising are the best known professional fields in this direction. head: Marty Lamers Alumni: Paul Linse, Claudia van Lieshout, Bart Hess, Anke Louwers

well being Hoe zijn we verbonden met onze omgeving? What connects us to our surroundings? What gives meaning to the things, spaces and services we use? ‘Man and Well Being’ creates a link between form and our experience of the world around us – in whichever shape. As a student in this department, you combine a cool head with a warm heart. Your mantra is ‘form follows feeling’. You want to reveal the best in human nature by refining design. This implies that you understand human experience varying from taste to tactility, from poetry to technology. Recent projects have touched on topics such as water awareness, flooring, the human sense of colour, and flowers. Product design in these and other areas relates to social awareness and human relations, and it will encourage us to reflect on sustainability and the value of natural resources. If this main subject appeals to you, you will be fascinated by the emotional value of a product, its applications and its impact on users (What do users feel? Is there an element of interaction? Is there an emotional aspect to using this product?). Equally crucial in this department is a keen sense of atmosphere and detail. head: ilse crawford Alumni: Jon Stam, Michou de Bruijn, Brecht Duijf, Nacho Carbonell
For stillborn foetuses after 24 or more weeks of pregnancy, there will be an official burial. But for younger embryos a burial is not available. In order to allow the parents of children stillborn before 24 weeks the opportunity of saying goodbye, Brigitte Coremans has created Miscarriage Coffins six little coffins in different sizes, referring to the development, of a foetus up until the 24th week.

Werken in teamverband is daarom een belangrijk kenmerk binnen Man and Public Space.
Eveline Visser has designed Bird City, a city for a mixed bird community. 33 Nesting boxes, catering for the housing needs of 33 different species of birds, to form a breeding ground for the winged inhabitants of the city. The design requires quite a delicate touch: the blue tit wants an opening with a 28 millimetre diameter; the great tit wants 32 mm, and the tawny owl will not enter below 80.
Designing environments where we can feel at home; this is our goal at Man and Public Space. Within Design Academy Eindhoven, this is the department with the most extensive work field. After all, public space runs from here to Tokyo without interruption. From the arrivals hall at Schiphol to the pavement outside your door. On a quiet Monday morning, the outlook of the city will differ from a market day or the day of the marathon. Public space forms the backdrop to an ever-changing set of activities. It is no different in a rural landscape. Where today the Lowlands festival is pitching its tents, tomorrow you will find cows grazing. As a Public Space student you will learn to notice these surroundings and to analyse the habits and experiences of their users. Meanwhile you will be creating attractive designs for a range of different situations, both in public interiors and exteriors. From a room in a museum to a marathon track, and from a cemetery to a library. In reality, designs for public spaces will often come about through collaborations with architects, landscape architects and users, so working as a team is an important feature within Man and Public Space. The fact that public space belongs to everyone does not imply that it should be a grey and mediocre space. Sometimes a unique design will create a completely new identity for a space. Think for instance of the museums in Bilbao or Groningen. This is why we are looking for personal designers with unique personalities. head : Hilde blank alumni: Jurgen Beij, Ester van de Wiel, Jerry van Eyck

This department encourages you to look closely at the role of technology. What is it now, and how can it be improved and expanded in the future? You will consider how various technological developments might be accepted by the general public and how these developments might influence people’s environment. Thanks to your intensive research and analysis, you will be the first to come up with innovative and attractive products, services and experiences. Because you will also have studied the changes needs within society. The list of essential criteria for a good project includes terms such as beauty, efficiency, sustainability, social relevance, user friendliness and comfort – not to mention empathy and humour. Whether the topic is work, rest or play, in the ‘Man and Activity’ department, we are always looking for an opportunity to improve and build on the products and services that have brought us to where we are today. head: Oscar Peña Alumni: Bas van der Veer, Jeske Spee, Silvie Meuffels, Nathan Wierink
Implements are often needlessly complicated, according to Remi van Oers. Take for example the car jack. Not everyone knows how to handle it and it takes a lot of physical effort out of the user. Van Oers has designed Easy-Car-Jack a version that will self-inflate, cranking the car up in the process. The carjack is super-simple to use.

How do people personalize a space so that they will feel at home in it? How do people achieve a sense of connection to their surroundings? And what determines the quality of our living environment? The Living department focuses on those products and services that determine the living environment. The things people need to be able to live and that will make sense of living in a set of surroundings. Students in the Living department will be open to their own surroundings, to the world around them, and they will develop a discerning view on everyday things, both today and in the future. You will be interested in finding out how products can hold significance for people, how a space will perform, and how people move around within a space. Within the assignments we will encourage you to think big and to think small. This applies to architecture as well as to products, with mood, material and colour playing important roles. This means that our assignments will appeal both to your rational and your intuitive qualities. Besides the conceptual approach, we promote a mentality of creating as much as we can. By implementing many of your ideas, you will develop your own personal signature. head: Bas van Tol Alumni: Rocco Verdult, Philippe Malouin, Steie van Vugt, Lotte van Wulfften Palthe

Design Academy Eindhoven is hier gehuisvest. Vorig jaar trok de Graduation Show 25.000 bezoekers.
Right in the centre of Eindhoven you will find one of the most imposing buildings of the city: De Witte Dame, or in English: The White Lady. As a former Philips factory, the location breathes a rich industrial history. Today, it is home to Design Academy Eindhoven. Throughout the year, the building is used for classes and courses, encouraging young people to give their very best and to develop a personal approach and method. But for nine days a year, the academy plays host to the Graduation Show, an exhibition where all the graduation projects are displayed in a museum-type setting. The exhibition is an opportunity for graduates to present themselves to the world. The professional field takes a keen interest in the show, as do the Dutch and foreign media. But the event is also open to the public. And interest is growing every year. Last year, the Graduation Show welcomed 25,000 visitors. Students are offered their first assignments as independent entrepreneurs at the Galleries. Or they receive job offers or succeed in finding a way of producing their work. With the Graduation Show and the Graduation Catalogue, Design Academy Eindhoven clears the stage for a whole new generation of designers.

De bacheloropleiding vindt bovendien prima aansluiting bij andere internationale masteropleidingen zoals Royal College in London of Parsons New School of Design in New York.
OR LOOK FOR A JOB? CONTINUE AT THE ACADEMY? After completing your Bachelor’s degree, you can go on to study for a Master’s degree. In addition, the Bachelor’s course is an excellent preparation for other international Master’s courses such as the Royal College in London or Parsons New School of Design in New York. Contextual Design research programme The things with which we surround ourselves each day, the context in which they are found and the relationships with people that they imply act as meaningful witnesses of an era. That is why the Contextual Design research programme is geared to knowledge development and critical analysis as well as to developing skills and a feeling for aesthetics.
How is the career perspective on completion of your education at Design Academy Eindhoven? No less than 87% of the graduates at the academy find a job within the first year after their graduation (70% even finds work within six months). This percentage is higher than the average for comparable studies in the Netherlands, which is about 80%. Where do our graduates work? About 40% work in industrial and product design, and around the same percentage in interior design. But you will find our graduates in almost every nook and cranny of the design world; sports design, television, designing for public spaces. A lot of our alumni work in the fields of conceptual and graphic design, advertising, or in directions related to fashion, identity, color, trend watching en accessories. Some more facts & figures: 50% work on a freelance basis, 30% is employed and 8% of our alumni have their own company and personnel. In short: the professional perspectives are very good.
Social Design research programme The Social Design research programme arose from the need for change in society. New relationships grow between people and things. The research programme will be developing new models, strategies and products for this new reality, looking at the interaction between people and design to improve the quality of everyday life. Information Design research programme The world has become more complex because information about it has increased in quantity and in the speed at which it circulates. The Information Design research programme is aimed at developing strategies, technologies, products and services for recording, understanding and intervening in an increasingly more complex world.

exchange
Design Academy Eindhoven has a specific selection procedure for exchange students. We have three reasons for this selection procedure: Compared to most design academies and universities, Design Academy Eindhoven is structured differently (Man and Activity, Man and Communication, etc.). DAE’s main focus is on conceptual design. And DAE usually receives more applications than there are places. The academy has a long tradition of accepting exchange students and it boasts many bilateral agreements with design academies and universities from all over the world. Experience has taught us the importance of finding the best match between student and academy / design department. To do so, our selection is based on the candidate’s portfolio. The portfolio has to be sent in for review, together with a motivation letter and an application form. (Please bear in mind that no digital portfolios are accepted!) There are two deadlines (1 November and 1 May). Procedures start immediately after these dates. We will let you know whether you have been selected for an exchange semester within three weeks. We will place you in the department that best matches your work and your preference. It is not possible to change departments, since the number of available places is limited. Exchange is possible for a maximum of one semester and only at Bachelor level. (Are you a Master student? Please feel free to apply, but you will be placed in the Bachelor’s course).
Please take into account you may need a visa during your stay in the Netherlands. Design Academy Eindhoven does not offer any kind of scholarship for exchange. EU students can contact the international department of their own academy to ask if Erasmus scholarships are available. If your exchange application is accepted and an Erasmus scholarship is needed, this is only possible on the basis of a bilateral agreement with your home university. The international officer of your home university will have to contact Design Academy Eindhoven if such an agreement has not yet been established. Looking for further information on exchange possibilities, such as more detailed general information, the application form or info on visa?

Design Academy Eindhoven is haar Vrienden dankbaar.
Design Academy Eindhoven is very interested in cooperating with the industry, the business community, authorities and social institutions. This ambition has led to the birth of a special cooperation programme, called ‘Friends of the Academy’. A Friendship allows an organization to engage in research projects with our students within a realistic context. Design Academy Eindhoven is very grateful to its Friends. We have noticed that such practical experience gives our students a better insight into their choice of profession and further development as a designer. The projects deepen their understanding of the social and economical aspects of their work, the value of cooperating with experienced experts and the need to exchange knowledge. The Friendships offer the academy community numerous essential opportunities and possibilities. Projects often lead to interesting results, which the Friends themselves find equally inspiring.
