Most visitors to Debrecen come for the Hortobdgy Puszta at the town's door, that special section of the Great Plain where there is no horizon and, if we are to believe the brochures, fellows with bushy moustaches and dressed in traditional garb ride across the landscape. They do, but for the mos't part for show rather than any traditional purpose. The other reason to come is the Flower Festival which takes place on 20 August. But Debrecen on its own has a few charms. Begin the day with an early-morning coffee at the Arany Bika, the oldest and certainly most beautiful hotel in town.] The current building is the creation of the architect HajBs, who incidentally won gold at the lOOm and 1200m swimming heats at the 1896 Olympics, the first of the Modern Games.
