Sampai jumpa from Djakarta Indonesia th
My name is Mark Kenny Williams Pranadjaja and on Saturday, 16 March 2013, I arrived at Schiphol International airport all by myself. My host, Indah Hijmans, and her family were really welcoming me and instantly I knew I was going to have a superb week. Together, we spent the weekend exploring the beautiful city of Rotterdam and Belgium. On Monday morning, I went to C.S.G. Willem van Oranje to gain some learning experiences in Europe. And for the first time in my life, I used a bike to school with a camera hanging around my neck and without a uniform!
Special Edition Internship • for students from students
I joint both grade nine and eleven, and since I can’t speak Dutch at all (and most lessons taught in grade 11 are in Dutch), I spent my time mostly with the grade nine students. There was something new in the method of studying. In Indonesia, students are waiting in their classrooms while the teachers change classes while in Holland, it’s the other way around. I learnt many things from this experience. For example, when I entered the class, everyone were still talking to each other. When the teacher started talking, all of them became quiet at once. I was so amazed. I could experience that respect and discipline were the most important thing at this school. I could also see that most students in this school, or in other schools in Europe, are more mature than the students in Indonesia, taller as well! As I have observed, there were so many Indonesians migrated to Holland. I wish my dad and mom were one of them. Unfortunately, it was not so. How sad it is. But let we hope, that someday in the untold future, the whole family will migrate to Holland and my biggest hope is that me myself will be there to study and stay forever, oh... the green football fields! About the language, it would be okay, because it’s not new for me since my grandparents are speaking Dutch. They are Dutch educated; in that time it was the HBS (Hollandse Burgerlijke School). However, I went to see some other beautiful cities as well during my stay in Holland. I also went to Roermond for shopping. The food was delicious. The people were nice and so hospitality. The country was fantastic. Everything was well organized and so clean. Most of all, there were so many football fields and these attracted me very much. Moreover, I always wanted to touch snow since I was a little boy! And now, before I knew, “I touch it!”

Special News A new face at the Willem My name is Philippa Ridley and I’m a 31 year old Brit who has been living in the Netherlands for 6 years. After graduating in Philosophy from the University of Leeds, I began work in the care sector. Firstly, I looked after young children in a nursery, which I also did during a year abroad whilst living in Sydney, Australia for 6 months. Following that, back in the UK, I became a Support Worker for adults with mental health problems and learning disabilities, working in a supported housing environment. When my then partner was offered a job in the Netherlands, we made the decision to move here together and I completed my English teaching qualification. So, for the past 6 years I’ve been teaching English in a language institute in Den Haag, as well as fulfilling the role of Assistant Head of English there for the past 2.5 years. For the past year and a half I have also been an Examiner for the Cambridge oral exams .I’m very happy to have now become part of the teaching staff at De Willem, teaching English to the regular students. As a native speaker, I hope to be able to instill confidence in my pupils in their English language skills and to challenge them to push themselves to achieve more in their language usage. In my spare time I enjoy doing yoga, running, reading, writing creatively and attending arts festivals, as well as keeping in touch with friends and family in the UK via Skype. Philippa Ridley

To the land of opportunity Amazing America
Location: America, Natick Period: July 2013 America; the land of fast-food, Hollywood and a McDonalds on the corner of every street . This is where I went to do my internship last summer. I left on Saturday th the 6 of July and stayed there till Sunday st the 21 . During those two weeks I stayed with friends of my parents and their two children, who were all as amazing as to host me! When I arrived at Boston airport (after having been in a plane for eight hours) I was immediately given a warm welcome by my host family. Once we arrived at their home they showed me around town. They also introduced me to some of their friends, who were all very welcoming and friendly and I immediately made some new friends too! The next day we went to visit Boston and they gave me a tour through the city. Everything was even more impressive than I had thought; the buildings were absolutely huge and there were so many shops and people too. I spend my first week working at a summer camp. At first I was not exactly sure what to expect from the summer camp, since we do not have them here in Holland, so I more or less expected it to be as in the movies; a bunch of wooden houses around a lake and a campfire. Later I heard this wasn’t the case and that it was actually held in the high school. The children were aged between 3 and 5 and my tasks mainly consisted of occupying the children, helping them eat and drink, keeping an eye on them and assisting the teachers with several activities. I definitely loved working at the summer camp and working with the
children, at the end of the week I had really grown attached to them, Also the teachers were exceptionally kind, and very welcoming. So at the end of the week I didn’t exactly like saying goodbye to everyone. In the weekend we did a lot of fun stuff too; we went to an amusement park, I also went shopping with my friends several times. The shops there are huge so we spend about an entire day in the mall. In addition We also went to a drive-in (which is like an outdoor cinema where you drive in with your car). Again this was something typical American that I had only seen before in movies, but I am really glad to have experienced. Also we lit a camp fire a couple of times, making s’mores and roasting marshmallows. My second week I spend working in an asset management office. There they had some
small tasks prepared for me like faxing, copying and filing. I was even given my own cube with two computers where I could work on. Once again the people were exceptionally friendly and they would immediately help me if I screwed up the copying machine again. Not only did I gain more independence, I have also had the opportunity to meet some amazing people. Also my host family was extremely kind and they would do everything to make me feel at home; they showed me some of the most amazing places and really made me experience the American culture. I can’t thank them enough for this! Nadine Slingerland

Manchester the best place for an internship Location: Great Britain, Manchester Period: July 2013 Could the impossible made possible? An internship at a (semi-)professional football organization in a foreign country? The answer is yes. So how did it all start? Spring 2012; my first thoughts about the international internship. Where was I planning to go? At what kind of company was I planning to complete my international internship? Questions like that popped into my head. After having answered the first question with “An English speaking country, preferably England or the United States of America” and the second question with “Big companies or football organizations” my search began. I emailed over fifty football clubs in England and a few in the USA, furthermore I emailed big companies and organizations like Windows, Apple, KLM, IATA and the BBC. In the end I was offered an internship, which lasted a year, at Windows, which was quite surprising because I stated, in my letter, that the internship was only for two or three weeks. Besides this, I was also offered an internship at York City FC and one at a semi-professional football club from Manchester, FC United of Manchester. So, I had to choose between York City, where they offered me a placement as a youth coach at a holiday football fun camp and where I had to take care of everything myself ór I could go to FC United, where I could work in the office and where I could stay with the office manager, John England. The choice was easy now, I was going to complete my international internship at FC United of Manchester.
Last summer holiday, I departed to Manchester. On August 9, I flew from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Manchester Airport, a one hour flight, for a period of eighteen days, where I was picked up by the office manager, John England. On the way to his house, he told me that another guy was staying with him for the coming weeks, a guy from Germany. When we arrived at his house I met him and John showed me my room. Just after I had dropped off my bags, I went to Old Trafford, Manchester United’s stadium, for a testimonial match. So there I was, sitting in one of the most beautiful stadiums in England, just after arriving in England. I felt excited about what was to come in the coming days. If this was the beginning, where would it end? The day afterwards, I was in a boardroom; talking to club officials and having lunch there in the break of a FC United friendly match. Unbelievable what I experienced in those first days. On Monday
the work in the office started. Every day was a different day. I was held busy with handling season tickets, memberships and printing entrance cards for press, workers and club officials for FC United matches. In the second week I designed a holiday draw advertisement to raise funds for the club. In the office I met a lot of friendly people, who worked with great dedication for FC United. Besides the work I did in the office, I visited the national football museum in the city
centre and I visited loads of football matches, not only the ones of FC United, but also matches of lower league teams and on the day before I flew back, I visited Wigan Athletic – Middlesbrough, a match on the second tier of English football. In the end I think it was the right decision to go to Manchester, because it almost felt like home, I think I couldn’t be better off somewhere else. I think that it was great that someone, who didn’t know me, was willing to host me for eighteen days!! Thank you John and thank you FC United for having me those eighteen days. As the main internship question I stated: ‘Would I like to work in a football organization?’ My answer to this question is both yes and no. Yes, because it was great to do what I did in
eighteen days FC United and no because,I thought that I would never say this, but football tired me. Football is my passion, but so much football, every day football, is tiring. However, if someone asked me: “Would you do it again?” or “Would you have done it in a different way?”, I would reply with no. I enjoyed it and had a great time. Michael van ‘t Hoff – V6

Levi takes Spain! A bilingual student’s review from an internship in southern Europe! Location: Spain, La Nuscia Period: July 2013
In year 5 of the bilingual VWO course I had to do an international internship. When I first heard of this, I got very excited. Going to a strange country to work there and be all by yourself! The thought of being that independent really appealed to me and I love making new international friends. Host Family I had no problem finding a host family, mainly because I already have quite a lot of international friends. So it was more of a “where” question than a “how” question. I eventually decided to stay with a friend of mine in Spain, Benissa in the province of Alicante. Job The only problem that was left, was finding work. Luckily my dad had a lot of free time so he scanned the internet for possible jobs for me. He brought me in contact with Mr. Gommans, the mayor of La Nuscia, a city near Benidorm. He told me that there was a sport complex in La Nuscia that could use some extra help translating the complex’s eighty-page booklet from English to Dutch for all the Dutch people in the area. But he realised that it wouldn’t take me a lot longer than a week to translate, so for the second week he thought it would be a good idea to let me help with the English football camp.
Things I’ve learned As a person who has never worked before, I learned how to be independent, what it is like to be in a work environment and how to adapt in case things go wrong at work. Having to travel four hours a day to get work and back again, I’ve also learned how to independently travel long distances and generally take care of myself in places I have never been before. Important things aside, I have also learned a bit of Spanish and that the people in the city are a lot less trustworthy than they present themselves to be (referring to the incident where I almost got pick pocketed by someone I spent about five hours with waiting for the same bus that was delayed due to unknown circumstances). (Also) Joking aside, I had an amazing time in Spain and am very grateful that my school offered me this chance to explore the outside world with only my English there to help me out. I can imagine that this is one of the best ways to improve on your English as there are no ways you can cheat. The questions you ask and the people you are with can’t help you if you forget something. You’re on your own! Levi Pieter 6VD

Do’s and Don’ts

The beautiful weather in Scotland.
Location: Fyvie Estate Scotland. Period : July 2013 Internship! Internship! Internship! All students in year five of the bilingual stream had to go on internship last year to a country where English is the spoken language. It all started during the evening organised by ‘’het Stagebureau’’ where they explained all the ins and outs of the internship. First of all I contacted family in Canada but we did not manage to make a good arrangement for my internship, thereafter an uncle of my dad came with the idea of going to a friend running an Estate named Fyvie Estate in Scotland. This wonderful idea made me decide to go to Scotland for my internship. After having visited the owner of the Estate in Holland, where he also lives several weeks a year, it was time for me to go to Scotland on the th 7 of July. When I arrived at Aberdeen airport I met Richard one of the people living and working at the Estate, I would stay with him and his wife Liz and their little son Mc Allan during my internship. Interesting to mention is that they have named their son after a Whisky branch because Richard also trades in Whisky, like most of them do I found out.
During my two week internship I have met a lot of Scottish people because daily I was helping at the Estate, which was very instructive for me because most of them
spoke in their dialect so I had to listen very carefully to understand what they were talking about. I had to help for several days at the Estate with the administrative work and the organising of a coming event in September. Besides the work I did in the office there was also a lot of work to be done at the Estate like feeding and watering the animals and especially the lots of different birds. During my stay the temperatures were almost every day above the 23 degrees and I have not seen a drop of rain which is very special while visiting Scotland they told me. Because of the hot temperatures the animals and birds needed a lot of water so instead of watering them every three days we had to fill the bins of water almost every day, which was a heavy job. One of the days I did not have to work at the office of the Estate I had to wake up early around 4:30 because one of the foresters took me out to show me the beautiful landscape of Scotland in the early morning, which was very special because we saw roe deer, a racoon and also foxes playing around. We also heard the screaming of buzzards so I will never forget this special sound.
My host family was very hospitable, they made me have a wonderful time in Scotland. The good weather made them even buy a barbecue to have a barbecue with me, family and other villagers. I was really surprised they had never had a barbecue for dinner because for me and I think most of the Dutch people it is normal to have a barbecue at home. Therefore it was no surprise that halfway the barbecue all the meat turned black and a lot of flames came out of the barbecue . I have had a wonderful time at Fyvie Estate in Scotland and therefore when they ask me to come back next year I won’t hesitate to come back. Sam van Marwijk Kooy, TTO 6.

News for parents TTO NEWS is een uitgave van het stagebureau van De Willem. Stagebureau De Willem Randweg 2 3263 RA Oud-Beijerland
[email protected] Redactie Marjan Rozemeijer
Bezoek onze website www.dewillem.nl
Reaction of internship company It was a pleasure to have Nicole Lageweg spend two weeks within the cancer community in North Simcoe Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada. Nicole observed psychotherapy sessions with cancer patients and their families and she was also given a tour and taught about the workings of radiation therapy technology and treatment. Nicole spent an afternoon with one of our medical oncologists, Dr. Sara Rask and her primary nurse, seeing cancer patients with different diagnoses and prognoses. Nicole also spent an afternoon with Dr. Murdoch in our family medicine teaching unit observing medical residents assessing patients and receiving feedback from seasoned medical doctors. Finally, Nicole spent over one week with the staff at Gilda's Club which is a support community centre for anyone affected by cancer volunteering her help with various tasks. Nicole is an enthusiastic and mature young woman who was eager to learn and she was very engaged during her time with us. Lesley Moody, HBSc., MBA Manager, Outpatient Oncology & Clinical Trials
