Organisations: • Accountancy, Auditing and Business Financing

A taxonomic reconceptualisation of personality disorders: personality dimensions and level of dysfunction Vrije Universiteit Brussel Abstract: The current project makes a valuable contribution to the development of the authoritative diagnostic taxonomy, DSM, by elaborating and empirically validating a dimensional model of personality disorders. Specific attention goes out to the dimensions of personality and dysfunction. Prototypes based on the lower-order structure of the Five Factor Model (FFM) can appropriately describe the specific DSM-IV-TR Axis II categories in terms of adaptive and maladaptive personality traits. However, the existing prototypes do not capture the entire variation in personality disorders, which clearly indicates the need for a more encompassing FFM classification. Moreover, recent research has demonstrated the importance of a dimensional dysfunction model, but a solid theory that systematically describes dysfunction is not yet available. Therefore, a recently proposed approach to dysfunction, based on two dimensions (non-coping and non-cooperativeness), will be empirically validated. The City is my Church. Constraints and opportunities of urban and rural environments for social capital in contemporary society Ghent University Abstract: Traditionally, rural environments have been celibrated as fertile grounds for social solidarity, while urban places were accused of being obstacles for building close and helpful ties. These traditional views have been challenged by authors emphasizing the positive aspects of large settlements and others denying the relevance of the rural-urban divide. The central concern of this dissertation is to find out to what extent rural and urban environments represent constraints or opportunities for accumulating social capital in contemporary society. Our study makes use of data gathered from students at the universities of Ghent (Belgium) and Granada (Spain) and of the EU-SILC, a dataset containing information gathered through a nations-wide survey in Belgium. Through empirical analysis this study takes scientific knowledge on the matter one step further. Organisations: • Departement of Political science

Study on the analysis of the needs for cross-border services and assessment of the organisational, legal, technical and semantic barriers. University of Antwerp Abstract: On the basis of already existing cross-border eGovernment pilot services and other EU initiatives (WP1), this study will explore and substantiate the existing and future needs (including socioeconomic, environmental, legal and even sector specific needs) and demand for crossborder eGovernment services (WP2). It will carry out an in-depth quantitative and qualitative costbenefit analysis to demonstrate how cross-border eGovernment services can make mobility in the EU less burdensome, provide added value to citizens and businesses and why deployment of new cross-border public services is needed (WP3). The study will identify and assess the organisational, legal, technical and semantic barriers that hinder the deployment of cross-border eGovernment services in the EU and consider their solutions (WP4). As a conclusion, the study will identify and propose options for the development of cross-border public services with the highest potential impact (WP5). Organisations: • Marketing

Imagining Europe from the outside. On the role of democracy and human rights perceptions in constructing migration aspirations and decision towards Europe (EUMAGINE). University of Antwerp Abstract: By means of a non-Eurocentric, theoretically and empirically sound cross-country and cross-region research design, EUMAGINE studies the impact of perceptions of human rights and democracy on international migration aspirations and decisions. Special attention goes to human rights (including women's rights) and democracy perceptions on Europe, specific European countries, and the relative popularity of Europe in comparison and competition with the US, Russia, Canada and Australia. The core idea of the project is that macro and meso level discourses on human rights and democracy influence micro level perceptions on these themes in countries of origin and transit, which in turn influence migratory aspirations and decisions. E-maturity: Evaluation of a model for ICT-implementation in Ecuadorian primary schools Ghent University Abstract: The PhD-research project focuses on the following research problem: Evaluation of a model describing and explaining external and internal factors for educational ICT-implementation in Ecuadorian primary schools. The theoretical base builds on recent models referred to as ematurity models. The integrated use of ICT by teachers and pupils is the dependent variable in this research a variety of independent and mediating processes and variables at different levels are studied at (1) pupil level (computer, attitudes, gender, ICT-experience, ?) (2) teacher level (conceptions, beliefs, philosophies, self-image, ?) (3) school level (ICT-policies, school support, leadership, ?). The following central research questions are studied: (1) What are they variables and processes that are to be distinguished at the level of the pupil, teacher and school in a multilevel model. The project builds on an ongoing innovation project in the El Oro province leading to additional research questions such as "Has the El Oro project an impact on the e-maturity level attained in Ecuadorian primary schools?"

Performance evaluation as a catalyst for an innovative chinese teacher education program Ghent University Abstract: Chinese teacher education is under pressure and forced to adopt innovative professional development approaches. In this context also the evaluation approach is questioned. The research problem of the project is therefore: Validation on the theoretical, and empirical base for introducing "performance assessment" in teacher education. This reorientation in evaluation builds on theoretical concepts taken from (1) Teacher
Thinking Theory (2) innovative teacher education models that build on constructivist approaches (e.g., cognitive apprenticeship), and (3) theoretical assumptions about reliability analysis when multiple evaluators are involved. The following research questions are studied: (1) What is the nature of the evaluation beliefs of teacher educators and student teachers? (2) What is the validity of a comprehensive set of teacher competencies? (3) Under what conditions can performance assessment be adopted as a reliable evaluation appraoch? (4) What is the impact of adopting a performance evaluation approach on teacher beliefs about evaluation?
