Saline Crops for overcoming soil salinity in Eastern Cuba: institutional strengthening and capacity building for research and development University of Antwerp Abstract: The project deals with the major problem of salinity in the Cauto VaIIey located in eastern Cuba, where it considerably diminishes food production. This area is of great importance for Cuban agriculture as it produces most of the country's sugar cane, nee, root crops and vegetables. Ice2sea:estimating the future contribution of continental ice to sea-level rise. Vrije Universiteit Brussel Abstract: The melting of continental ice (glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets) is a substantial source of current sealevel rise, and one that is accelerating more rapidly than was predicted even a few years ago. Indeed, the most recent report from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change highlighted that the uncertainty in projections of future sea-level rise is dominated by uncertainty concerning continental ice, and that understanding of the key processes that will lead to loss of continental ice must be improved before reliable projections of sea-level rise can be produced. The ice2sea programme will draw together European and international partners, to reduce these uncertainties. We will undertake targeted studies of key processes in mountain glacier systems and ice caps (e.g. Svalbard), and in ice sheets in both polar regions (Greenland and Antarctica) to improve understanding of how these systems will respond to future climate change. We will improve satellite determinations of continental ice mass, and provide much-needed datasets for testing glacierresponse models. Using newly developed ice-sheet/glacier models, we will generate detailed projections of the contribution of continental ice to sea-level rise over the next 200 years, and identify thresholds that commit the planet to long-term sea-level rise. We will deliver these results in forms accessible to scientists, policy-makers and the general public, which will include clear presentations of the sources of uncertainty. The ice2sea programme will directly inform the ongoing international debate on climate-change mitigation, and European debates surrounding coastal adaptation and sea-defence planning. It will leave a legacy of improved understanding of key cryospheric processes affecting development of the Earth System and the predictive tools for glacier-response modelling, and it will train a new generation of young European researchers who can use those tools for the future benefit of society. Estuarine morphological management for optimizing flood defence, port accessibility, and ecology University of Antwerp Abstract: This project investigates the possibilities of morphological management of the Schelde estuary (trough strategic dredging and dumping of sediment) in order to optimize the three main functions of the estuary: 1) The estuary should provide protection against flooding of the densely populated area bordering the estuary. The morphological modifications should lead to attenuation of the landward propagation of tidal waves, storm surges, and sea level rise, and hence should contribute to protection against flooding. 2) The estuary should provide access for sea ships to the port of Antwerp. The morphological modifications should result in concentration of tidal currents towards the shipping channels in order to maximize the self-eroding capacity of the channels. 3) The estuary hosts European protected ecosystems. The morphological modifications should guarantee the variation of estuarine habitats. This is studied by coupling of hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and ecological modelling. Views on end-of-life care. Study of attitudes, preferences, and expectations of the general public and media representations regarding end-of-life care Vrije Universiteit Brussel Abstract: Our society is experiencing a strong aging of the population and a change in predominant epidemiological patterns. Next to these demographical changes that increasingly confront us with death and dying as parts of our lives and of our society, a number of changing attitudes also contribute to a changing attitude towards death and dying. Because of these changes people realize more and more that death is an inevitable aspect of life, and hence a 'good death' also an aspect of the quality of life. The increasing attention for the quality of the end of life and for the 'good death' has given way to an increase in the amount of research about aspects of end-of-life care in Belgium and in other countries. However, virtually no attention has been paid in research to perspectives, attitudes, expectations, and aspirations of lay people in Belgium. Certain studies have examined attitudes of the Belgian general population towards euthanasia and other end-of-life decisions, but studies on the views of lay people with regard to different aspects of the end of life and end-of-life care, their knowledge regarding end-of-life care, their preferences regarding the care at their own end of life are completely lacking for Belgium, as opposed to in the Netherlands where limited attention has been paid to these issues. The central research aim of this research project is, therefore, to examine what views about end-of-life care circulate within the general population. Knowing the opinions of the general population is indisputably valuable and deserves further research attention. Abstract: Probleemstelling De Vlaamse confectieproducten worden over de ganse wereld sterk gewaardeerd en massaal verkocht. De globalisering heeft ertoe geleid dat deze bedrijven toch gebukt gaan onder een toenemende prijsdruk en een afbouw van de winstmarge. Daarnaast scherpen consumenten hun wensen aan en ontwikkelen ze nieuwe behoeften zoals gepersonaliseerde producten, modieuze kledij voor de actieve vergrijzende bevolking en de wens om online te kunnen shoppen. Naast een trendy design is het zich comfortabel voelen in een bepaald kledingstuk de belangrijkste trigger die de consument aanzet om over te gaan tot de aankoop. Een kledingstuk kan pas comfortabel en flatterend zijn voor de drager als de pasvorm goed zit. Door de diversiteit van de mens en de in veel gevallen gebrekkige kwaliteit van de gebruikte lichaamsmatentabellen kunnen de meeste merken verwachten om amper 30 à 40 % van hun doelgroep goed passende kledij te kunnen aanbieden. Wanneer zij nieuwe markten aansnijden valt dit snel terug tot soms slechts 10 %. De eerste jaren kunnen sommige merken overleven dankzij hun innovativiteit en/of design, doch in de daarop volgende jaren nemen passende maten en een goede pasvorm de bovenhand waardoor de loyaliteit van de consument aan het merk verzekerd wordt. Bedrijven maken vandaag gebruik van verouderde 1D meetdata. Deze data zijn misleidend zodat, zelfs met de beste wil, van bij de aanvang fouten opgenomen worden in de productspecificaties. Bovendien zijn 1D meetdata blind. Ze zeggen niets over de vorm van de gemeten personen. Wanneer basispatronen gegradeerd worden naar grotere en kleinere maten en men niet over 3D gegevens van de lichaamsvormen beschikt, is dit meestal een ‘educated guess’ en worden nog meer fouten ingebouwd. Een goede matenrange geassocieerd met een perfecte pasvorm wordt nochtans als een opportuniteit gezien om een competitief voordeel te creëren ten opzichte van goedkope importproducten. In geval van beschermkledij en sportkledij is dit zelfs een must om de veiligheid en het prestatievermogen van de dragers te garanderen. Doelstellingen De projectresultaten zullen de industrie toegang geven tot geactualiseerde antropometrische data van de Belgische bevolking. Deze informatie is noodzakelijk voor de confectiesector om adequate matentabellen te kunnen opstellen. Bovendien wordt sinds 1996 in Europa gewerkt aan een gestandaardiseerd labellingsysteem voor kledingmaten. Het systeem is gebaseerd op lichaamsmaten (in cm). Vandaag gebeurt maataanduiding echter meestal nog ad hoc: wat in Nederland maat 38 is, is in Frankrijk maat 42, in Italië maat 44 en in Groot-Brittannië maat 12. Door de maten te harmoniseren met dit Europees raamwerk en ze weer te geven in cm, moet hier een einde aan komen. De verouderde Belgische metingen zijn niet geschikt om te gebruiken binnen dit Europees raamwerk. De resultaten zullen de industrie voorbereiden op de invoering van deze norm. De verzamelde data zullen niet alleen bruikbaar zijn voor de kledingsector, maar ook voor het ontwerpen van ergonomisch verantwoorde industriële werkstations, automobieldesign, design van persoonlijke beschermingsmiddelen, veiligheidsbeoordelingen, cockpit design, ontwerpen van orthopedische hulpmiddelen, design van ergonomische slaapconcepten om maar enkele mogelijke toepassingen te noemen. De projectresultaten zullen bestaan uit: database met ruwe antropometrische data, 3D modellen van de bevolking, nieuwe standaard lichaamsmatentabellen, allometrische gradatietechniek. In 2008 they developed their first joint project comparing 6 nations, that resulted in a joint book "a global sporting armsrace". Conference themes THEME 1: ELITE SPORT POLICIES AND STRATEGIES TOWARDS SUCCESS: AN INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON IN 15 NATIONS Competition in elite sport has increased and the price of success has risen considerably. The notion of the 'global sporting arms race' is based on a growing awareness by nations that elite sporting success can be produced by investing strategically in elite sport. An international group of researchers has joined forces to develop theories, methods and practice on the Sports Policy factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS). This symposium is concerned with the strategic thinking behind a large-scale international comparative SPLISS-study, by comparing the elite sport policies and strategies in place for the London 2012 and Rio De Janeiro 2016 Games, in distinct nations including Australia, the Netherlands, Japan, France, South Korea, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Northern Ireland (as part of the UK), Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Belgium (Flanders/Wallonia). THEME 2: WHY DO COUNTRIES INVEST IN ELITE SPORT? Why do countries want to win medals at the Olympic Games? Does elite sport success lead to: higher participation in sport because of an inspirational effect; an enhanced national 'feel-good' factor; national pride; a sports culture; and a positive boost to a nation's economy? These questions are posed by governments and National Olympic Committees worldwide as a legacy of the investment of public funding in major sports events. Analysis of personal exposure using sensor networks Universiteit Hasselt Abstract: Society is becoming increasingly sensitive to individual risks. For many general risks, such as road accidents and air pollution, individuals are now more risk averse than before. However, policy choices will (eg regarding the environment) often change the human exposure to pollution and change the individual health risk. These guidelines are usually only at the population level studied and assessed. Historically the exposure of the population (especially regarding air pollution) has always been calculated by simply multiplying the calculated concentrations of pollutants with the population density at the same place. Measuring the pollution for a long time in many places, is usually associated with high costs and is complicated by the complex and large measuring equipment. Recently, Hasselt University and VITO demonstrated that dynamic analysis better allows to predict the exposure of urban populations than the traditional static approach. As people throughout the day travel from one place to another, their exposure will be determined by the background concentrations in each of those locations, plus local sources (indoor, school, car, ...). We formulate the hypothesis that the movement between micro-environments is the main determinant of differences in exposure between people who live and work within the same geographical unit. Policies that could intervene in the daily routine activities may be an effective tool to change the exposure (reduce). To test this hypothesis, three complementary methods: 1. the use of a time-use model to predict the times and locations of exposure 2. newly developed low-cost sensors for air pollution are deployed in a network so data can be gathered concerning the exposure of specific groups in the population 3. Antibiotic resistance in the community in Kenya Ghent University Abstract: In this project, we will put the seeds for an increased knowledge on antimicrobial resistance in clinical and commensal bacteria in the Kenan community. It will lead also to a firm frame work for further research which we plan to initiate in the E! of the VLIR-UOS programme. This work will be divided into four work packages. 1) The surveillance network will be developed, the surveillance network will be developed. Fibrosis formation and the role of hepatic stellate cells in the angiogenesis setting will be studied. Optimalisatie en kostenbeheersing van nul-energie massief- en passiefbouw voor betaalbare en sociale woningbouw University College Ghent Abstract: De Europese Commissie heeft in haar Directive van 19/05/2010, (gepubliceerd op 19/05/2010 – 2010/31/EU) bepaald dat vanaf 2021 alle nieuwe gebouwen “bijna-energieneutrale (BEN) gebouwen” moeten zijn. Het eventuele energieverbruik van de vermelde systemen moet eveneens worden gecompenseerd door ter plaatse opgewekte hernieuwbare energie. Er is vanuit de aannemerswereld nood aan correcte, werkbare en dynamische tools rond het E-peil en kostprijs waar elke aannemer gebruik kan van maken. Wat is de precieze kostprijs van het nul-energie gebouw ten opzichte van een E80, E60, E30 of E15 woning? Ook is er vraag naar een juiste koppeling met bestaande premies ter verantwoording van meer investering. Er bestaan reeds diverse tools zoals E-calculatoren (VCB). Deze zijn evenwel onvoldoende en moeten aangevuld en geüpdated worden. Breed verspreide kennis bij de ontwerpers ontbreekt. De grote uitdaging is om een gebouw te ontwerpen met nul-energie dat betaalbaar is. Het gebrek aan voldoende kennis over nul-energie wooneenheden een belangrijke belemmering op het succes hiervan. De verspreiding van de kennis en ondersteuning bij ontwerpers en aannemers zal een belangrijk element van dit project uitmaken. Dit project wil kennis uitdragen naar de brede markt, mar wil ook focussen naar sociale woningbouw. De hoofddoelgroep is de brede markt van nieuwbouwprojecten, woningen en appartementen. In bijkomende orde wordt ook de markt van de renovatieprojecten als doelgroep aangeduid. Een bijzondere doelgroep zijn de besturen voor de bouw van sociale woningen. Daarnaast kan deze tool gebruikt worden voor alle nieuwbouwprojecten en renovaties. Dit beperkt zich niet enkel tot woningen, maar ook overheidsgebouwen, scholen, kantoren,… . Dit project wenst een simulatiemodel te ontwikkelen waarin al de wisselwerkingen tussen ontwerpkeuzes en installatieparameters worden opgenomen. Het model optimaliseert de keuze van de verschillende stappen in het ontwerp op basis van technische en financiële haalbaarheid van een concreet project. Gelet op het grote belang van de goede uitvoering is het aanbieden van procedures en meettechnieken voor controle op de werven van de goede uitvoering van zeer lage energie gebouwen een doelstelling. Ook concepten worden gecontroleerd op hun efficiëntie. Het oprichten van een kenniscentrum voor ondersteuning van ontwerp, uitvoering, controle, opvolging en betaalbaarheid ten behoeve van ontwerpers en aannemers is een doel. Dit zal in samenwerking en overleg met al bestaande ondersteunende centra gebeuren. Alle verzamelde kennis en modellen zullen ter beschikking zijn van het kenniscentrum dat ondersteunend zal werken bij concrete projecten. Het kenniscentrum zal in concrete gevallen sociale huisvestingsmaatschappijen ondersteunen wanneer zij de bouw van nul-energie gebouwen overwegen. In de beginfase zal het kenniscentrum bevolkt worden medewerkers van het onderzoek. In latere fase zullen specifiek onderzoekers aangetrokken worden voor de verdere dienstverlening te kunnen verzekeren. De onderzoekscel bouwfysica en binnenklimaat op de HoGent krijgt steeds meer vragen over bouwfysische problemen. In dit domein zullen dan ook in de nabije toekomst doctoraten vrijkomen. In dit project worden gevallenstudies opgenomen. Een bijzondere casestudy is de realisatie van een pilootproject sociale woningbouw. In dit project zal een groep van 6 sociale woningen volgens het nul-energie concept gerealiseerd worden. In dit project wordt van ontwerp tot uitvoering volledig ondersteund. De betaalbaarheid is hierbij cruciaal bij het maken van de keuzes in ontwerp en uitvoering; Het project wordt uitgewerkt volgens de ontwikkelde modellen. De realisatie van dit pilootproject moet een voortrekkersrol spelen voor alle sociale huisvestingsmaatschappijen in Vlaanderen en zal daarom als kijkproject, instructieproject en demoproject fungeren. Met Dit pilootproject wil dit project een trekkersrol spelen in de markt van sociaal woningbouw en tevens de nodige persaandacht trekken. Een webportaal zal gecreëerd worden. Ze zal gedetailleerde technische informatie, richtlijnen voor best-practice en in het algemeen, informatie voor de brede doelgroep bevatten. Intensieve workshops op maat en studiedagen worden georganiseerd in samenwerking met leden van de gebruikerscommissie. Dit project wenst in samenwerking met de belangenorganisaties een barnum-campagne “Bouw nu een betaalbare 0-energie woning” te realiseren, die een boost moet geven naar de toepassing van dit concept.
