Construction and actualisation of a database 'household dwellings'. Vrije Universiteit Brussel Abstract: Starting from the results of the 2001 Belgian socio-economic survey (census), a relevant, consistent and up-to-date database 'household dwellings' is designed, to be implemented at Statistics Belgium (N.I.S.), including practical assistance during the implementation phase. In the first stage alternative data-sources (administrative registers, surveys,...) containing relevant information are tracked down. Next, problems in using these alternative sources are investigated. Consequently a quality and feasability study is undertaken. Finally, in close cooperation with Statistics Belgium, the final database is conceptualised. Organisations: • Sociology • Social Research

Construction of a "Bell-20 index" for all stock quoted shares on the Brussel Stock Exchange during the period 1832-2005. Comparison with the returns on the Belgian Banking sector, the risk free rate and the all share index and other portfolios. University of Antwerp Abstract: The project has practical objectives and aims at calculating a "BEL-20 index" (capital gain as well as total return index) for the period 1832-2005 for the Brussels Stock Exchange. These indices will be compared with returns calculated for the risk free rate, for the banking sector, for the all share index and other portfolios of the Brussels Stock Exchange for the same period. By doing so a brand new benchmark will be available for a long historical period. Organisations: • Internationale economics, International Management and Diplomacy

Construction of Russian and European identities in glasnost and post-Soviet Russian feature films (1985-2005). University of Antwerp Abstract: Before 1992 Russia did not exist as a country. The search for a Russian identity, however, did already take place in `Soviet Russia'. Cinema in the Soviet Union was not pertinent for defining a Russian national identity because it was abused to further the socialist cause (the creation of a Soviet identity). Therefore, it was only since the increasing demystification of the Soviet ideal, of communism, during glasnost that the national quest became apparent in cinema. In the end, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and simultaneously the all-powerful ideology,
filmmakers could express their ideas of national self-awareness in openness. In this PhD I want to examine if and how Russian feature films are used to interrogate, to express or to construct national and regional identities and this throughout two decades (1985-2005) with the fall of the Soviet empire as turning point. Besides national identities, I want to pay in particular attention to regional, i.e. European identities, due to Russia's schizophrenic status as a European/non-European country. I will translate the abstract notion of identity into a set of concrete parameters, such as self-other relations, which are then observable in films. Additionally, I will look at the conditions of film productions, the filmmakers' self-representation in interviews and literature along with their and their films' reception in (Soviet) Russian society (spectators, critics) and international responses. Vrije Universiteit Brussel Abstract: This research proposal is a request for funding of a 4th PhD-student year for Yanna Van Wesemael. The latter is making her PhDdissertation within the framework of the IWT project 'Monitoring the quality of end-of-life care in Flanders' (IWT323). as Yanna was only employed on the project from the start of the second project year (replacement of Kathleen Van Hulle), only three years of her PhD trajectory can be financed within this IWT project. With this proposal we therefore ask for funding for the staff costs of one year as a PhD-student, inorder to complete the planned articles and the dissertation. An important part of the data collection of the study has already been conducted or is currently being conducted: 1) Mail Survey on the activities of all LEIFphysicians (N=132) (i.e. physicians offering consult to treating physicians on eg euthanasia). A part of the results of this survey was incorporated into an article submitted to an international journal; two other articles based on this data collection are in preparation. 2) March 2009 will be the start of a large-scale mail survey in 3000 Belgian physicians about their attitudes and experiences regarding euthanasia requests, end-of-life decisions, and the consultation of colleague physicians in authanasia. All preparations, including a positive advice of the ethical committee of the University Hospital, for this study have been made and the data are expected to be ready for analysis in autumn 2009. Since the data will already have been collected, only staff costs are requested for the 4th PhD-student year in order to complete the articles and the dissertation. Organisations: • Medical Sociology

Consumer protection during the currency of a credit agreement. KU Leuven Abstract: The research project analysed the different methods of consumer protection vis-à-vis consumer credit agreements. Nowadays the emphasis is on the information paradigm, according to which the well informed and circumspect consumer can make free and rational decisions if and to the extent he is given full, correct and understandable information. The first part of the project gives an overview of (i) the foundations of respectively EU and Belgian Contractand Consumer law and (ii) critically examines the information paradigm in the field of consumer credit regulation, as it is currently the EU's and most national legislators' preferred consumer protectionmethod.Part two and three look into the legal grounds, risks and advantages of a right to alter credit agreements unilaterally or by mutual agreement, the right of early repayment, etc. These risks andadvantages are weighed in normal situations as well as in a situation of financial distress of one of the contracting parties due to unforese Organisations: • Faculty of Law, Campus Kulak Kortrijk

Consumer reactions to different branding strategies in an interactive context University of Antwerp Abstract: This project researches effects of interactivity on marketing communication for different brand strategies to find out how interactivity influences consumer reactions to new products. In two studies, we oppose new brands versus extensions of familiar brands and small versus broad brands. It is expected that interactivity will engender different communication effects for different brand strategies, in function of cognitive capacity. Organisations: • Marketing

Containment or contamination? The influence of federalisation on the etno-political discourse of political parties and elites. The case of Belgium (19682007) University of Antwerp Abstract: This project aims to provide insight into the role that federalisation processes play in the moderation or radicalisation of the ethno-political discourse of political parties and elites in Belgium. This is achieved through diachronic analysis of this ethno-political discourse applying qualitative content analysis techniques to party political election manifestos and televised election debates between 1968 and 2007. Attention will be paid to (evolutions in) official positions as well as to explicit and implicit elements of (sub-)national identity construction. Contemplative monasteries in the 21st century. An ethnographic study of present-day contemplative community life KU Leuven Abstract: Contemplative monasteries in the 21st century. An ethnographic study ofpresent-day contemplative community life. The religious landscape of present-day Western-European society is characterized on the one hand by a high level of secularisation and on the other by an increased religious plurality (Berger, 2000). The values intrinsic to a religiously oriented life in community are often diametrically opposed to the dominant Western-European thinking patterns like individualism, utilitarianism and scientism. It is in this context not self-evident to consciously choose monastic life and it is moreover difficult to remain committed as a monk or a nun to a life characterised by a quasi-linear continuity and by exceptional obligations and limitations (Merkle, 1992:13). The aim of this ethnographic study is to describe the physical and social environment of a specific contemplative Trappist community, in this case the Abbey of Sint-Sixtus in Westvleteren (Belgium), and hence to contribute to t Organisations: • OG_vr_recht
