Point of departure is the model for the explanation of EU politics which I have developed in my prizewinning dissertation. I have developed three mutually reinforcing research lines: 1. The making and implementation of EU policies in the field of gender equality, with special attention to the role of the European Court of Justice; 2. Comparative Regionalism: the development of regional integration (EU, Mercosur, SADC and ASEAN) and the legitimacy of regional governance; 3. The politics of inter-regionalism: the role of the EU as an external actor and relations between regional organizations in the Global South. The first line has resulted in a very well-received monograph (Van der Vleuten 2007), articles and book chapters, as well as collaboration with prof dr Theresa Wobbe (Universität Potsdam). A subproject concerns the political role of the European Court of Justice and LGBT rights (Council of European Studies network with Phillip Ayoub (Cornell) and David Paternotte (VUB)). This line is further developed in the IMR-hotspot EUROPAL. The second line has resulted in participation in the project Governance Export by Regional Organizations (coordinated by Tanja Börzel and Vera van Hüllen, Freie Universität Berlin), which will result in an edited volume and articles. The third line has resulted in book chapters and collaboration with researchers from the Universities of Brussels, Ghent, Erfurt and Quito. These three lines and bodies of knowledge converge in the GRANddEUR project on gender and interregionalism. The aim of the project is to explain gender norm dynamics
