Talent-ontwikkeling
Talent-ontwikkeling
We often cling to the idea that success is a simple function of individual merit and that the world in which we grow up doesn’t matter at all. The Gold Mines teach us the opposite lesson: that if we are to explain how elite performers are formed it is no good only looking inwards for individual character traits, special psychological profiles and motivation. We also have to examine the environments in which top performers have their origins.

The Five Gold Mine Concepts
(2011)
(1985) As the American psychologist Benjamin Bloom concluded in his studies of a wide range of top-performing people: “Virtually all of them benefited from supportive environments during their development. We looked for exceptional children, but what we found were exceptional environments.”

While other coaches also stressed some of those principles, I differed greatly from them in what I didn’t stress; namely, I never talked about winning or beating an opponent. (…) My job, and the team’s job, was to get us as close to being as good as we could get. The final score would be a byproduct of that effort.

Van negatief naar positief
As a 15year-old h e set a new American record at an out-oftown meet. On his return to Baltimore, his dedicated mother, Debbi e, prepares a grand party for him, with balloons, strea mers, and yard signs commemorating his remarkable fea t. Michael’s new record is to be celebrated in s tyle. But the party never really takes off. A few hours before Michael gets home his coach, Bob Bowman, comes by and when he sees what’s cooking, he takes down all the streamers, pops the balloons and pulls down theplacards. And he throws it all into the trash, while D ebbie gapes in amazement: ‘Why are you doing that? Don’t you realise that he must be celebrated when he wins?’ she exclaims. A while later, afte r she has calmed down, Bob Bowman explains to herwhy he played party killer: ‘This is a journey of a thousand steps. If we celebrate now, like this, that leave s us nowhere to go’. Bowman once called this episode a defining moment in Michael’s care er.
